  • Lions Club to sponsor two pupils

    Ota Silva Lions Club, under the District 404B1 International Lions Club, has pledged to sponsor a set of twins in Kings and Queens Group of Schools in Ijoko Area of Ogun State. The six-year-old twins, Master Temitope Kehinde Aborishade and Miss Temilope Taiwo Aborishade, also received various gifts from other guests present at the valedictory service of the school. It was a reward for their splendid performance at the programme.

    Master Aborishade read a 47-page novella off-by-heart without missing a word or spelling, while Miss Aborishade also composed different poems, led a drama, dancing and other assignments.

    It was a marvel to behold for their mother, Mrs Abosede Aborishade and other guests at the event.

    In the circumstances, the Club’s Charter Secretary, Oluwatosin Akanbi made a cash donation to support Lions Club’s gesture for the pupils.

    Speaking, the Charter President, Mr Nickson Aghanti Igwe said the gesture was in accordance with the maxim of “service to humanity” of Lions Club International. He said Lions Club is an international club that gather people of like minds to serve people and community through their time, talent and treasure.

    He said: “Members of the Club present at the event are so impressed with the talents displayed by the twins and decided to do that to encourage them, their parents and other school mates through the announcement of the one-year scholarship to enable them to continue to do better.

    “Lions Club is not a secret society; it is an association of great people of like minds that are ready to serve their community with all they have. Where there is need, there is Lion and where there is no Lion, there is no need”, he said.

    He appealed to the pupils to remain focused and steadfast in their education, even as he advised them to stay away from all forms of undisciplined act that can jeopardise their future.

    He also appealed to all parents to ensure they build strong and sound education for their children/wards from their elementary school, adding that education is the best tool to fight poverty and all impunities in the society.

    The Club also donated books and other writing materials to pupils of the school.

    The proprietor of the school, Mr Emmanuel Akintayo thanked the club for the gesture. He urged the parents to focus much on their children’s education.

    He said it was not right for parents to wait until their children are sent out of classes because of textbooks, adding that any child who goes to school without books is like a soldier who goes to the war front without weapons.

    He advised parents to ensure they provided study packs for their children immediately the school resumes even if the school fees are not ready. He added that textbooks and other study materials are necessary for learning.

     

  • Lions Club donates chairs to Primary Health Centre

    Ilupeju Lions club has donated three dozen white chairs to Ayantuga Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Odi-Olowo/ Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State.

    Club President Raji Babatunde said the gesture was to partner with the LCDA to bring humanitarian services to the community.

    He said: “We have donated three dozen chairs here today. Our aim is to come in areas where government cannot do it all. We are seeking to bridge the gap between the people and government.”

    Babatunde noted that the club had also donated other items, including drugs to the PHC, nothing that the health sector is one of the club’s primary concerns.

    He added: “We donated chairs today, because we went to the PHC to find out what they need and chairs were one of their most pressing needs. This is the starting point for us in this community, we will do more.

    “We are partnering with the Local Government to render more humanitarian services, including donating food items to the less privileged in the community, health awareness campaigns and empowerment.”

    He said the club had set out to bridge the gap between the less privileged and the rich through funds solicited from the rich.

    Medical Officer, Ayantuga Primary Health Centre, Kunle Adebanwo, described the gesture as beautiful and innovative, noting that it would make service delivery better in the centre.

    “When some of our patients come here, they have nowhere to sit; they usually sit on the staircase, lean on the walls, on the ambulance parked in the premises or loiter around.  The donation of these chairs has come at the right time and we really appreciate them for it.”

     

  • Oyo to partner Lions Club to fight diabetes, paediatric cancer, others

    Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Friday said his administration is ready to partner with an international service organisation, the Lions Club, in checking paediatric cancer, hunger, diabetes, vision impairment and protection of environment among others.

    He gave the assurance while playing host to members of the Lions Club District 404-B1 Nigeria, covering Lagos, Oyo and Ogun State who were on a courtesy call to his Agodi Government office, Ibadan.

    The delegates, led by the District Governor, Mr Lekan Babalola were on the visit to solicit the support of the government in actualizing its vision and also invite the governor to the induction as the new District Governor at an event slated for today (Saturday).

    Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Dr Gbade Ojo, Governor Ajimobi said, “all over the world, there is no society or any human collectivity, where government alone can provide everything that we want. So, I can assure you that the Oyo State Government will willingly partner with the Lions Club. One thing that marks out the developed society with the developing ones like ours is the fact that the rich amongst us are not sufficiently giving back to the society. It is either they are evading tax, or they don’t have the required milk of human kindness.

    “When you look at foundations in Europe and America like Ford Foundation and several others, they have gone far in taking care of people. Also, a number of former American presidents have global foundations, through which they either combat malaria, guinea worm or other health conditions. So, the rich among us need to do more people, either by joining the Lions Club, or whatever other ways. If they join such organizations, they will donate more in taking care of the society.

    “No doubt, at all levels of government, we need more influence and appearances of non-state actors. While the society is hungry for infrastructural provisions, which the government alone cannot provide, non-state actors are supposed to fill that gap so that we can live in a better society.”

    Earlier in his remarks, the new District Governor, Babalola, said the club was on the visit to solicit government’s support for its project such as an outreach to at least 10,000 people living with diabetes, free cataract surgery and distribution of eyeglasses, cornea transplant, eradication of hunger and provision of food, protection of environment, reduction of paediatric cancer among others.

    He thanked the government for pass support in various areas of interventions embarked upon by the international organization, noting that, the club has been growing in leaps and bounds because it has continued to give back to those in need, especially the poor and less privileged in the society.

  • Lions Club members join road safety campaign

    Ota Diamond Lions Club, under the District 404B1, Association of Lions Club International, has extended its humanitarian services to traffic control and campaign in Ogun State.

    No fewer than 30 members, including its President, Mr Omotayo Opeyemi Akinnola, and other executive members converged last Sunday on Tollgate, along the Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway to control traffic and safety public enlightenment.

    Addressing reporters during the three-hour exercise, Mr Akinnola said the operation was imperative because it had been noticed that accidents nowadays killed faster than any ailment and “uncountable lives are lost while several millions worth of property is lost daily to road crashes”.

    He said the exercise would complement the efforts of traffic managers on road safety crusade aimed at ending crashes on our roads.

    He  said: “We decided to join safety campaign/traffic control with the relieving the hunger, improving vision, diabetic/cancer awareness campaign, youth empowerment and maintaining clean environment to complement the efforts of government and road traffic managers on safer road crusade to enable road users have  safety trips.

    Ota Division Commander of Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Adekunle Ariyo Ajibade, praised  Ota Diamond Lions Club for its passion in humanitarian services to the less-privileged.

  • Lions Club president canvasses useful projects

    To complement government’s  efforts in building a better society, the International Association of Lions Club has urged its members to be more committed to humanitarian services and be good ambassadors wherever they found themselves.

    The Governor, District 404B1 Nigeria, Lion Lekan Babalola made the appeal through the President, Ota Diamond Lions Club, Lion Opeyemi Akinola and Charter President of Ota Silva Lions Club Nickson Aghanti Igwe while reviewing the message of the just-concluded leadership training for members of Ota Silva Lions Club in Ota, Ogun State in Lagos.

    He said if members become more involved in humanitarian services, it will go a long way in curbing criminality and other social vices in the society.

    He said all members of the club both local and international are encouraged to always have the spirit of serving humanity with dignity and should become good ambassadors of the Club wherever they go.

    He added that stretching the hands of fellowship to the society can only be achieved through the prompt payment of the club’s dues, good leadership, transparency and accountability.

    He noted that one of the basic tenets of human dignity is the ability to provide for oneself and for one’s family, saying this is the best way of assisting millions of people who are experiencing hardship and whose future and hope are uncertain in the society.

    Lion Babalola said all members of the club are expected to work towards becoming global leaders in their respective communities through the humanitarian services they render, create and foster the spirit of understanding among peoples of the world and as well unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.

    The District Governor urged all members of the club under the District to contribute to the welfare of residents of the community through empowerments, environment cleaning; health check-up and embark on all other projects that would benefit the community.

    “In Lionism, we serve and in togetherness we shall continue to serve better,” he said.

  • Lions Club members urge to serve people

    THE District Governor 404B-1 of Lions Club International, Lion Oyewole Oyewunmi, an engineer, has urged all Lions Club members to serve in accordance with the club’s goals. He said all activities of the members should be in line with the slogan: “We serve”.

    He spoke at the official presentation of Lion Nickson Aghanti Igwe as the Charter President of Ota Silva Lions Club.

    He said all members should continue with their contributions towards the District’s projects such as diabetes screening and counselling of people, partnership with the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO) on skill acquisitions and empowerment of youths and interested members in the society, construction of vocational centres referred to as Lions’ Den. He urged every member to pay more attention to the Clubs Centennial Global Service campaigns on relieving hunger, protecting the environment, paediatric cancer, among others.

  • Lions Club to build N75m diabetes centre in Ekiti

    By next year, a world-class Diabetes Screening and Treatment Centre facility will be available at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

    The District Governor of Lions District 404B-2, Lion Dupe Dada, broke the news during a special fund raising dinner in Lagos.

    She said this was the club’s way of contributing to the society, as everything should not be put on the government.

    Dada said: “We discovered that many lives have been lost to diabetes. So, as soon as my team and I came on board, we decided that this would be our core project. The fight against diabetes has started and we urge all philanthropists to come and be part of it.

    “What we are trying to do is a one-stop arrangement centre where everything connected to diabetes is taken care of within the building. The facility we are putting on ground is going to be one of the best in Nigeria. One of the reasons we chose the location is to make this service accessible to those who do not have so much money to travel abroad to access this kind of facility.”

    The chairman of the occasion and a Professor of Medicine and Consultant Rheumatologist at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja, the Lagos State capital, Prof Olufemi Adelowo, said many people with diabetes were not aware.

  • Lions Club renovates school

    Lekki Admiralty Lions Club, District 404A1 Nigeria has renovated Aiyeyemi School in Lekki area of Lagos state.

    The club renovated four classrooms and built additional one classroom in the school. It also floored some portion of the school compound.

    The club’s District Governor, Olatunbosun Okpeseyi, said the gesture was in line with the vision and mission of the club, adding that it was part of the club’s legacy project.

    “We are a service organisation and that is why we are here to deliver this project. The essence of life is to come together to solve problems. There are lots of things that still need to be done in this school and we cannot do it alone. A lot of people have resources; they must show love and give back to the society from which they get a whole lot.”

    He appealed to media houses, traditional rulers, government agencies and the private sector to help the society.

    “There is no need doing what will tear us apart as a nation; our co-existence is interrelated; we need to identify the societal issues, come together to solve it and things will work well. We must serve our society; service is the tool we need for change in this country for social transformation.”

    The Club’s President, Sade Akintomide, said the gesture is the club’s way of impacting, serving the community, and to put smiles on the face of others.

    According to her, the project seeks to improve the standard of the school.

    “The state of this school before our coming was bad; the first time I came here, I wept; the compound is always flooded whenever it rains; the state of the classrooms was nothing to write home about,” she said.

    The School Proprietor, Stephen Aiyeyemi said the pupils are excited.

    “I am excited on what Lions club has done here today. The school was in a worse situation, but now it is beautiful. This would attract more parents to bring their children to our school, there would be more patronage and we would be able to do more.”

     

  • Lions Club measles campaign ends today

    Lions Club International District 404 (LCI) will today conclude its three week ‘Measles eradication campaign’ programme.

    Its First Vice District Governor, Dupe Dada, and national measles campaign coordinator, Abolagada Adebisi, described the exercise as seamless and a ‘weapon to stamping out measles’.

    At the flag off of the exercise at the Lion’s secretariat, Yaba, Lagos, Dada said the exercise avoided some crisis prone areas such as the Northeast.

    A member of the club, Dr Funke Adebajo, said:  ‘We are partnering with the government; the only thing we look forward to seeing from the government is appreciation for what we are doing because we already have the fund. We are spending our own fund as sponsored by Lion’s Club International but it is very important that we collaborate smoothly; that’s why we are not doing it in isolation of the government’s exercise.”

    Lions Club Governor, Lion International (District 404B), Chief Ayobola Samuel, hailed the projects, which include the donation of waste bin to Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Health Centre at Coker Road Ilupeju; donation of public hand washing facility by the Ikeja Unique Lions Club to African Grammar School Ifako Agege; renovation of toilet systems of the Youth&Sports Centres by the Ikeja Platinum Lions Club; as well as donations of exercise books and solar devices to students of Marist Nursery and Primary School Ikorodu, by Lagos Apex Lions Club.

    Others include: donation of white classroom boards markers and writing materials to Immaculate Hearts Comprehensive Junior High School, Maryland by the Ikeja Metro Lions Club; and tree planting at Government College Secondary School Orile Agege courtesy of Ikeja Dynamic Lions Club.

    The chairpersons of Region 5 and Region 6, Gertrude Akhimien and Oladipupo Olanipekun, praised the District Governor for his visit and commitment towards ensuring the club lives up to its humanitarian mandate.

    Lions Club to fight against cancer, diabetics

    The International Association of Lions Club has promised to tackle cancer and diabetics in its 2017-2018 service year.

    It described the two diseases as the major ailments killing masses in the society.

    Its District 404B-1 Nigeria Governor, Oyewole Oyewunmi, an engineer, made this known at the District cabinet meeting in Ogun State. He said his regime would campaign against the two deadly diseases during his tenure.

    He said: ‘’Feeding the hungry, youth empowerment, tackling environmental challenges and eye screening exercises” we would embark on public enlightenment, prevention and treatment of cancer and diabetics until it finally become things of the past in the country’’.

    According to him, the club would be educating the masses on diabetics and cancer, symptoms/detection, risk/effects and treatment options.

    Oyewunmi took over the mantle as the District 404B-1 Governor to serve for the year 2017-2018 from Waheed Kadiri who served for 2016-2017.

    Oyewunmi noted that his regime would also focus on building vocational centres to be called “LionsDen” in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital and provide grants for youth empowerment training programme in partnership with Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO).

    He appealed to members to support the projects through payment of their dues. He noted that it would only achieve the proposed projects through the prompt payment of dues and voluntary donations.
