Liverpool, Ronaldo lead tributes to Jota

Liverpool says they are “devastated” by the “unimaginable loss” of forward Diogo Jota, who has died in a car crash aged 28.

The Portugal international and his brother Andre Silva, 25, were killed after their car left the road because of a tyre blowout in the Spanish province of Zamora.

Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children, just last month.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who played alongside Jota, wrote on social media: “It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the national team, you had just got married.”

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo sent his condolences to Jota’s family, wife and children, and added: “I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo e Andre. We will miss you.”

Liverpool said in their statement they were “devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota”.

The club added: “Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, team-mates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”

Jurgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager who signed Jota for the Reds, said he was “heartbroken”.

“This is a moment where I struggle. There must be a bigger purpose. But I can’t see it,” the German coach posted on Instagram.

“Diogo was a not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father. We will miss you so much.”

Jota, who joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves, won the Premier League last season and was also part of the team that won the FA Cup and League Cup in 2021-22.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said he was “much more than an amazing player”.

“Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all team-mates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself,” the FPF said.

“We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and Andre represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything to honour their legacy daily.”

Aleksander Ceferin, president of European football’s governing body, said: “Just three weeks ago, I had the honour of presenting Jota with a medal after the Nations League final – a moment of joy, pride, and celebration that will now forever be burned in memory with sorrow.”

In a post on world football’s governing body Fifa’s X account, president Gianni Infantino said Jota and Andre Silva will both be “so sorely missed by all those who knew them and by the worldwide football community.”

“Aged just 28, Diogo had enjoyed a fantastic career to date and had many great years ahead of him, while his brother Andre was thriving at Penafiel.”

Leverkusen sign Quansah from Liverpool for £35m

Bayer Leverkusen have signed defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a £35m deal.

The 22-year-old centre-back has joined the German Bundesliga club on a five-year contract.

Quansah was part of the England side that won the European Under-21 Championship by beating Germany in the final on Saturday.

His move is the third deal between the clubs this summer after Liverpool signed midfielder Florian Wirtz and defender Jeremie Frimpong.

Newcastle wanted to sign Quansah last summer, as part of a deal to send winger Anthony Gordon to Liverpool, but the Reds turned down the proposal.

Quansah came through the Liverpool academy and made 58 appearances for the club, scoring three goals.

He helped the Reds win the League Cup in 2024 and made 13 league appearances last season as Arne Slot’s side won the Premier League.

“With Jarell, our defence gains significant dynamism, pace and toughness in tackling, and he’s another very important building block for the future.”

Liverpool are interested in Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, amid uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate’s future.

The France centre-back has 12 months left on his contract at Anfield and is yet to agree an extension, while Joe Gomez’s future is also unclear.

  • Liverpool  ready  to make stunning swap for Lookman

Liverpool  ready  to make stunning swap for Lookman

Liverpool are reportedly  considering a sensational swap deal that would see  Nigeria International Ademola Lookman and  his Italian counterpart Federico Chiesa change clubs.

Italian media outlet, Quotidiano Sportivo, claimed  that  Chiesa is likely to leave Liverpool and return to Serie A after a miserable first season at Anfield. Despite picking up a Premier League winners’ medial,  Chiesa barely featured at all – making just five league appearances totalling 41 minutes, all of them from the substitutes bench.

Incidentally, Liverpool are among the clubs who are big fans of Atalanta’s star Lookman, and the report further claimed  that the Reds could consider a swap deal that sees the Nigerian move to Anfield in exchange for cash plus Chiesa.

The African Footballer of the Year is expected  to  leave Atalanta  at the end of the season if the Italian club receives a suitable offer believed to be around €60 million.

Lookman has been heavily linked with virtually every top team in Europe over the past months.

A return to the Premier League is believed to be the likeliest destination for the 27-year-old, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool and Newcastle all interested. Barcelona and PSG are also big fans.

Earlier this year, Lookman was crowned African Footballer of the Year and finished 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or race after a stunning 2024.

He scored a legendary hat trick for Atalanta in the 3-0 Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen last May. He hit 27 goal contributions for the season before taking that brilliant form into the 2024/2025 season.

In the first half of the season he was arguably the best player in Serie A, as Atalanta looked a good bet for the Scudetto.

However, together with Atalanta as a whole, Lookman’s form has dropped off in 2025 and he has not managed a single assist this year, although he has still added eight goals.

During his time at Anfield, he won two Premier League titles — including this season’s, and played a key role in the club’s 2019 triumphs in the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. His honours also include two Carabao Cups, one FA Cup, and the Community Shield.

  • Top-five hopeful Chelsea welcome champions Liverpool

Top-five hopeful Chelsea welcome champions Liverpool

Premier League champions Liverpool are in line to receive a guard of honour at Stamford Bridge on Sunday but any pre-match pleasantries will quickly be put to one side with hosts Chelsea desperate to boost their top-five hopes.

Liverpool wrapped up the title with four games to spare last weekend with a 5-1 hammering of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield while Chelsea eked out a 1-0 win over Everton that kept them in the thick of the battle for Champions League qualification.

The Premier League having an extra spot in next season’s Champions League might ordinarily have given the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea a little more leeway, but the reality is five clubs are chasing three places.

By the time Chelsea kick off against Liverpool, depending on other results, Enzo Maresca’s side could be in sixth place and under pressure to rain on Liverpool’s parade.

With second-placed Arsenal, who have 67 points from 34 games, looking safe for a top-five finish, the scrap for third, fourth and fifth has become the only story in town for the remaining weeks of the top-flight season.

Newcastle United (62 points from 34 games) are in a strong position ahead of their Sunday trip to Brighton & Hove Albion while outgoing champions Manchester City (61 from 34) can ill-afford any slip on Friday at home to a Wolverhampton Wanderers side who have won six successive league games.

Seventh-placed Aston Villa’s season is in danger of petering out after falling at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League and in last week’s FA Cup semi-finals, and they know anything other than a win against Fulham in  tomorrow’s early kick-off could end their top-five hopes.

Read Also: Barcelona, Liverpool, five others  line up for Lookman’s signature

In the early months of the season, Chelsea gave every impression that they could challenge for the title, even if Maresca continually downplayed their chances.

While a title shot would have been a surprise, despite the club’s 1.1 billion pounds outlay in the transfer market since a group led by American Todd Boehly bought the club in 2022, a top-five finish would have been the bare minimum requirement.

Chelsea’s spending dwarfs that of Liverpool, and pretty much every other club, over the same period, yet on Sunday they will start 22 points behind Slot’s side who have suffered only two league defeats all season.

With the exception of Federico Chiesa, who has barely featured, Liverpool’s squad is virtually the same as the one that finished third last season, nine points behind champions Manchester City.

Maresca may have been talking about the UEFA Conference League semi-final against Swedish club Djurgarden when he said this week “you don’t win games and titles with money” but it neatly sums up the reality of his first season in charge.

Chelsea might hope that Liverpool, with a record-equalling 20th  English title in the bag, may take their foot off the gas at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. But they won’t count on it.

While the Conference League could yet allow Maresca to deliver silverware in his first season in charge, defeat by Liverpool, especially with tough remaining fixtures including a trip to Newcastle, could see them miss a seat at Europe’s top table for the second successive season.
