BIG GAMES: Emirates Stadium quakes as Arsenal host Liverpool

Game week nine of the 2024-25 Premier League season concludes with a tussle of titanic proportions at the Emirates Stadium tomorrow, when title rivals Arsenal and Liverpool butt heads.

Both English behemoths were unconvincing winners in their midweek Champions League affairs, as the Gunners edged out Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 before the Reds conquered RB Leipzig by the same scoreline.

Prior to last weekend’s trip to the South Coast, Arsenal fans had to go back to New Year’s Eve 2023 for the last time that their side were bested in a Premier League away fixture, but more alarming indiscipline from Mikel Arteta’s men cost them dear against Bournemouth.

William Saliba’s first-half sending-off did not mean that the tie was a foregone conclusion – Arsenal had held out for draws against Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester City with 10 – but a well-worked Ryan Christie goal from a corner and Justin Kluivert’s penalty ended the Gunners’ wonderful 12-game unbeaten road run in the Premier League.

Not only that, defeat at the Vitality Stadium was Arsenal’s first in half a year, a statistic that a bullish Arteta emphasised in his press conference as his side missed the opportunity to spend Saturday evening top of the rankings; they go into the weekend third and four points adrift of the leading visitors.

A Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka-less side lacked ingenuity once again when Shakhtar came to visit in the Champions League, where only an unfortunate own goal from Dmytro Riznyk got Arteta’s men over the line, but that one-goal triumph does mean that the hosts are on a five-game winning streak at the Emirates.

All in all, nine of Arsenal’s last 10 competitive matches at their North London home have ended in victory, but Gooners may travel in trepidation rather than optimism; Arsenal have won just 45% of their Premier League games without the banned Saliba compared to 74% with him in the team.

A Liverpool side with no such disciplinary concerns to worry about head to the Emirates with an Arne Slot spring in their step, as the Dutchman continues to send Merseyside records tumbling since stepping into the mammoth shoes of Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds passed one of the toughest challenges of their title credentials yet on October 20, when Chelsea rocked up to Anfield and gave Liverpool a terrific run for their money, but Mohamed Salah’s penalty and Curtis Jones’s toe-poke kept the Reds at the summit after Manchester City’s dramatic beating of Wolverhampton Wanderers just hours before.

While Liverpool are one point better off than the holders at the time of writing, they will drop to second by the time Sunday’s game kicks off if City get the better of lowly Southampton on Saturday, and their victory in Leipzig on Wednesday did not come without several scares.

However, Die Roten Bullen’s own wastefulness and offensive naivety also helped the Reds make it eight victories in a row across all competitions, and Slot has astonishingly won each of his first six away games in charge of Liverpool, seeing his team ship a paltry two goals in the process.

Success tomorrow  would move Liverpool onto 24 points from their first nine games of the new term – only once before have the Reds managed as many points at this stage of a Premier League campaign, taking 25 from nine in their triumphant 2019-20 year.

Liverpool’s powers in this fixture have waned over the past couple of terms, though – Arsenal have prevailed in their last two top-flight games at the Emirates and are unbeaten in four against the Reds in the Premier League, although they did come up short in January’s FA Cup third-round tie on home soil.

Liverpool edge Chelsea  to reclaim EPL top spot

Liverpool passed a major test of their Premier League title credentials to move back to the top of the table by beating Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah’s penalty and Curtis Jones’ winner made it 10 wins in 11 games for the Reds since Arne Slot took charge.

Nicolas Jackson briefly levelled for Chelsea in the second half, but they slipped to a first league defeat since losing to Manchester City on the opening weekend of the season.

Victory takes Liverpool one point ahead of City and four clear of Arsenal, who they face at the Emirates next weekend.

Chelsea are now seven points off the top down in sixth, but there was plenty cause for optimism for the Blues from a performance that stretched Liverpool to their limits.

Liverpool’s only defeat under Slot came to Nottingham Forest following September’s international break.

The Dutchman responded by this time leaving all of his South American internationals – Alexis Mac Allister, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez – on the bench after their exertions in recent days across the Atlantic.

The decision to hand Jones just his second league start of the season proved an inspired one as the England international won Liverpool’s penalty and scored the decisive goal.

Chelsea were fortunate still to have 11 men on the field after just six minutes when Tosin Adarabioyo hauled down Diogo Jota.

The Portugal international was still a long way from goal but the incident was almost identical to the one that saw Arsenal defender William Saliba sent-off in a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth on Saturday.

Having survived that scare, Chelsea settled nicely into their rhythm and pushed the home side back by dominating possession.

However, Liverpool’s pace on the break was a constant threat and Chelsea were caught out when Salah fed Jones, who was chopped down by Levi Colwill.

Salah slammed home his 10th  goal against his former club from the resulting penalty.

Moments later, Cody Gakpo slotted in at the end of a lightning Liverpool counter-attack, but Salah had strayed offside before delivering the assist.

At the other end, Jackson smashed off the angle of post and bar in the first sign that Chelsea had some punch to their possession football.

Chelsea, though, had another escape just before half-time when referee John Brooks initially pointed to the spot once more when Jones went down under a challenge from Robert Sanchez.

VAR intervened, however, as the Spanish goalkeeper got a touch on the ball before making contact with Jones.

Within three minutes of the restart for the second half, the Blues were back level as VAR played another helping hand for the visitors.

Jackson latched onto Moises Caicedo’s through ball and coolly slotted past Caoimhin Kelleher for his fifth goal in eight Premier League games.

The Senegalese striker was ruled offside on the field, but was shown to be played on by Ibrahima Konate on replay.

Liverpool took just three minutes to restore their lead as Jones timed his run perfectly to control and flick in Salah’s cross.

Chelsea forced Slot’s men to defend their lead for the final 40 minutes but struggled to create clear-cut chances for the equaliser until seven minutes of stoppage time.

Renato Vega headed over Cole Palmer’s free-kick before Christopher Nkunku failed to get a telling touch to Pedro Neto’s teasing cross.

Nineteen-Time Premier League champions, Liverpool, will welcome Chelsea to Anfield on Sunday, in the most anticipated fixture of the matchday eight. The Reds go into the match top of the table with 18 points from their first seven matches, while Chelsea sit fourth in the table.

Arne Slot has enjoyed an impressive start to his managerial career at Liverpool, with his only blip being a 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest in September. The Blues have also been impressive under their new manager, Enzo Maresca, amassing 14 points from a possible 21.

Chelsea suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat in the corresponding fixture last season and also lost the Carabao Cup Final to Liverpool at Wembley. The Blues are also winless in their last nine matches against Liverpool.

Providing the team update at his press conference on Friday, Slot said: “Alisson Becker is not with us for the upcoming weeks that’s clear. But we now have quite some issues with players coming back from their national teams and we can only judge that perfectly from today as it’s the first day they are all in.

“So let’s see after the session where everybody is. Alexis Mac Allister missed one game and played the second. Kostas Tsimikas missed the first game with England, and Wataru Endo was sick. So I can name them all. We’ve got a few issues going on but let’s wait and see where we are after today.”

This will be the first time Liverpool face a team in the top half of the table this season, and it promises to be an explosive encounter, as both sides are committed to attacking football. Tune in to catch the match live on DStv ch 203 and GOtv ch 65, at 4:30 pm tomorrow.

Arsenal will aim to keep tabs with the table toppers, when they visit Bournemouth, live on DStv ch 203 and GOtv ch 65 at 5:30 pm today.

Meanwhile, Premier League defending champions, Manchester City, will travel to the Molineux Stadium, where they suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat last season.

Wolves are currently bottom of the table with one point from seven matches. An away match after the international break tends to be tricky for the big teams, and City will hope to avoid another shock that could see them lose more ground in their title defense. The match will be broadcast live on DStv 203 and GOtv 65, at 2 pm tomorrow.

Real Madrid and Barcelona will also be in La Liga action this weekend. Real Madrid will travel to Celta Vigo, live on DStv ch 204 and GOtv ch 62, at 8 pm today while Barcelona will host Kelechi Iheanacho’s Sevilla, live on the same channel tomorrow at 8 pm.

Samuel Chukwueze is expected to be in Serie A action when AC Milan takes on Udinese at 5 pm today, live on DStv ch 208 and GOtv ch 64. Ballon d’Or and African Footballer of the Year nominee, Ademola Lookman will also be in Serie A action for Atalanta against Venezia tomorrow at 2 pm, live on DStv ch 208 and GOtv ch 64.

Liverpool‘s Slot faces  first  big test at Chelsea as EPL  returns

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has enjoyed a record-breaking start to his tenure at Anfield but has been measured in his response as he says they have yet to face a top side, although that is all about to change with the visit of in-form Chelsea.

Dutchman Slot, the first Liverpool manager to win nine of his first 10 games in charge, must now steer the leaders through a tough schedule, with a gruelling run of 10 games in three competitions that could go a long way to shaping their season.

Liverpool have 18 points after seven games, having scored 13 goals and conceded two, to stand a point ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal, while Chelsea are fourth on 14.

“I looked at the league table and ‘OK, which teams did we face until now and which position are they? Are they in the top half or the bottom?’” Slot said of the schedule so far.

“There are a lot of difficult teams we still have to face … let’s see where we are then when it comes to conceding goals because maybe the fixture schedule has been ‘nice’ to us when you see the league table.”

Chelsea have won all three of their league games on the road this season by a combined score of 10-2.

Liverpool’s gruelling stretch of matches, which includes a trip to Arsenal on Oct. 27 and the visit of Manchester City on Dec. 1, is lousy timing considering first-choice goalkeeper Alisson is expected to miss most of it.

The Brazilian is set to be sidelined with a hamstring injury until the league game at Southampton on Nov. 24.

They have been known on a global basis as the city that can make things happen, brings great events, reflects the best of America.

Slot, however, is confident his number two, Ireland international Caoimhin Kelleher, can fill in seamlessly.

“Alisson is our clear number one,” the 46-year-old Dutchman said. “(He is) the best goalkeeper in the world so it’s always a blow when he gets injured. But in almost every position we have a second option that is also really good.

“Caoimhin Kelleher has already shown that.”

EPL: Liverpool beat Crystal Palace, remain top

Liverpool continued their impressive start to the season by securing a sixth successive victory in all competitions with victory at Crystal Palace – but it came at a cost as goalkeeper Alisson went off with an injury.

The early Premier League pacesetters took the three points thanks to Diogo Jota’s first-half strike as the Portugal forward capitalised on some poor defending to turn in Cody Gakpo’s cross.

But as they closed in on the three points Alisson appeared to suffer a hamstring injury when making a clearance and was replaced by Vitezslav Jaros for the final 10 minutes, with the Czech goalkeeper making his debut.

Liverpool have lost just once in the Premier League so far but Crystal Palace are winless, with this their fourth defeat in seven games.

They had an early Eddie Nketiah strike disallowed for offside, while Ismaila Sarr forced a good save out of Alisson just before the break.

Liverpool’s inability to find a second meant that Palace – having been a distant second best for large periods – were always in with a chance of taking something.

Alisson was twice called upon in the second half to make saves, first keeping out Nketiah’s shot after the visitors had been caught in possession, and then denying Eberechi Eze.

While the late change in goal was a blow for Liverpool, Palace were unable to truly test Jaros before the final whistle, with Eze firing straight at the goalkeeper after a good break.

The win meant Liverpool moved four points clear at the top of the table before the 15:00 BST games got under way. Palace, meanwhile, remain in the bottom three with three points from seven games. BBC

Slot rallies Liverpool for Nunez over goal drought

Arne Slot said it is up to Liverpool to help misfiring forward Darwin Nunez increase his goal tally as well as the player himself.

The Uruguayan international has scored just once this season, against Bournemouth, which was his first goal for the club since April.

Slot, whose Premier League leaders travel to Crystal Palace on Saturday, defended Nunez after his latest spluttering display in Wednesday’s 2-0 Champions League win against Bologna.

The Liverpool boss pointed to Nunez’s lack of playing time – he has started just three games this season – as a possible reason for his malaise.

EPL: Liverpool thrash Bournemouth 3-0 at home

Luis Diaz scored twice in two first-half minutes as Liverpool returned to winning ways in the Premier League with an emphatic victory over Bournemouth at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s team, beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest last weekend, thought they had fallen behind after only five minutes when Antoine Semenyo turned in Justin Kluivert’s cross, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside by the video assistant referee.

The Reds responded in ruthless fashion, going close through Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez before Diaz rounded Kepa Arrizabalaga and slid the ball into an empty net to open the scoring.

The Colombian struck again moments later to double the hosts’ lead, collecting Trent Alexander-Arnold’s pass and firing through Kepa’s legs from close range.

Nunez, making his first Premier League start since April, made it 3-0 with a tremendous, curling drive – his first top-flight goal since a 3-1 home win over Sheffield United over five months ago.

Summer signing Federico Chiesa enjoyed a lively cameo on his Premier League debut, sending a long-range effort straight into Kepa’s arms before striking the woodwork late on – albeit from an offside position.

Bournemouth were also denied by the crossbar in the latter stages as Andoni Iraola’s team slipped to a second successive league defeat.

The win lifts Liverpool top of the Premier League before Sunday’s game between last season’s top two Manchester City and Arsenal.

Salah hints at Liverpool exit after Man United drubbing

Mohamed Salah hinted this will be his final season at Liverpool after scoring his 15th  goal against Manchester United in a resounding 3-0 win for the visitors at Old Trafford.

Salah has less than a year left to run on his contract at Anfield and said no discussions have taken place with the club on extending his deal.

The Egyptian has written himself into the record books of the English giants, scoring 214 goals since joining in 2017.

“I had a good summer and had a long time to myself to try to stay positive because as you know it’s my last year at the club,” Salah told Sky Sports. “I just want to enjoy it and I don’t want to think about it. I feel like I’m free to play football and then we’ll see what happens next year.”

Salah set up two goals for Luis Diaz before extending his record as the top goalscorer in meetings between United and Liverpool by scoring for the seventh consecutive game at Old Trafford.

“To be fair I was coming to the game, it could be the last time (playing at Old Trafford),” he said. “Nobody in the club has talked to me about contracts. It is not up to me, it is up to the club.”

Salah signed a three-year deal in 2022 that reportedly made him the highest paid player in the club’s history, worth more than £18 million ($24 million) a year.

But he has been consistently linked with a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League.

A year ago Liverpool reportedly rejected a bid of £150 million from Al-Ittihad.

The 32-year-old is just one of three major Liverpool players out of contract at the end of the season, along with captain Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

However, on the field all is well for the Reds as new manager Arne Slot has made a serene start to the daunting task of replacing Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool have won their first three Premier League games without conceding to sit behind Manchester City at the top of the table on goals scored.

“It’s a great result. Everyone knows it’s very important for the city and for the fans – and for the manager with his first game in here,” added Salah. “We’re so happy for the result. If you want to fight for the league this is the sort of game you need to win. I’m glad we managed to win it.

“The manager likes us to press high. We scored from all those situations.

“There’s not a big difference from Jurgen at the start and in time we’ve changed the system a little with the way we play. We’re adapting.”

    Liverpool striker gets five-match ban

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has earned a five-match ban.

He was at the centre of a mass brawl between Uruguay players and Colombian supporters.

Nunez was caught on several videos in the early hours of Thursday July 11 brawling with Colombia supporters after Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat to Luis Diaz’s side in the semi-final of the tournament in the United States.

At the end of the match a fight appeared to break out in the stands between a number of people, with a shirtless Nunez eventually becoming heavily involved in the scuffle.

The Liverpool striker could be seen appearing to strike at a number of Colombia’s followers before he was forcibly restrained in what were shocking post-match images in North Carolina.

It was suggested at the time that the Reds’ No.9 was stepping in to defend his family as the mass brawl began between both sets of fans.

Liverpool refused to comment on the ugly scenes at the time but reached out to Nunez to get his version of events before also holding dialogue with Uruguay Football Federation in their efforts to get a full picture of facts.

A statement from the Copa America’s official channels on Wednesday confirmed Nunez will now miss five matches for Uruguay with as many 12 people sanctioned by CONMEBOL, South American football’s governing body.

The suspension does not apply to club football, however, meaning the Reds striker is free to continue being involved for Arne Slot’s team.
