Troubled Virgin Atlantic jet lands safely in London

Virgin Atlantic passenger plane has landed safely at London’s Gatwick Airport after discovering a problem with part of its main landing gear.

Virgin flight VS43 with 447 passengers and 15crew was travelling from Gatwick to Las Vegas when it had to return.

The Boeing 747 circled over southern England for several hours dumping fuel before making a bumpy but safe landing just before 16:00 GMT.

Gatwick’s runway was shut to all air traffic causing severe delays.

Aircraft due to land at Gatwick were being diverted to other London airports, while departing flights were being delayed. Passengers are being advised to check the airport’s website or contact their airline.

Flashing lights of emergency vehicles could be seen close to the plane, which landed without its full set of landing gear.

Ambulances and fire-and-rescue crews had been on standby as the plane circled the airport in the hours after it took off for the US late yesterday morning.

Before the successful conclusion to the incident, Virgin announced the plane would be carrying out a “non-standard landing procedure” at Gatwick airport.

Pictures of the 747 circling over East Sussex – to burn off fuel – were shared on social media

The problem affected part of the 747’s right main landing gear

The issue meant the aircraft had to land on three of its four main landing gear

Eyewitnesses reported the jet was flying at relatively low altitude and the pilot appeared to be trying to “shake” the landing gear down.

Nick Hughes, who was on board, said the crew made several attempts to try to free the landing gear.

“They put the thrust on quite heavily and then dipped down, I think, to try and loosen the gears but obviously nothing kind of worked.

“They gave it every opportunity before they tried the emergency landing. All credit due to the crew and the staff and of course the pilots because the landing was probably one of the softest landings I’ve ever had.”

Another passenger, Hardeek Desai, said: “The staff were trying to keep everyone calm but a few passengers were a bit panicky. One of the crew came out to the seating area to reassure everyone everything was going to be OK.

“The staff were giving out things like drinks and water to everyone to make sure everyone’s OK. Generally, the mood was pretty good at this point until we hit the brace position.”

Describing the mood on the plane as it was circling, passenger Dan Crane, 24, from Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, said it was “anxious, a lot were worried, some crying. The mood was quiet, just waiting for the captain’s next announcement.”

Mr Crane, who is with family and friends, said the crew kept everyone informed, adding: “They said it was an emergency landing and we had to brace on impact.”

Another passenger, Mike Kaufman, said: “This was one of the greatest emergency landings in history. It was very smooth.”

He praised the pilots and the cabin crew, saying the landing had been “textbook”.

Virgin Atlantic chief executive Craig Kreeger said: “I am very pleased to confirm that all customers and crew have now disembarked the VS43 flight to Las Vegas, which returned to Gatwick airport this afternoon following a problem with one of the landing gear.”

Virgin Atlantic president Sir Richard Branson tweeted: “Well done @VirginAtlantic pilots & team for safe & skilful landing of #VS43. Thoughts with passengers & crew, thanks for support & patience.”

A spokesman for British pilots’ organisation Balpa said: “Pilots train hard for exactly this kind of situation. It goes to show that well-trained pilots are vital.”

Also yesterday, it was declared that the missing AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501 is likely to be at the bottom of the sea, the head of Indonesia’s search-and-rescue agency said yesterday.

Bambang Soelistyo said the hypothesis was based on the co-ordinates of the plane when contact with it was lost.

The search for the Airbus A320-200, which disappeared with 162 people on board on Sunday on a flight to Singapore, has ended for a second day.

The search area will be widened on today.

Indonesia has asked for US help in searching for the plane, the US state department said, adding that it was considering the request.

The pilots had requested a course change because of bad weather but did not send any distress call before the plane disappeared from radar screens between Borneo and Sumatra.

“Based on the co-ordinates given to us and evaluation that the estimated crash position is in the sea, the hypothesis is the plane is at the bottom of the sea,” Mr Soelistyo told a news conference in Jakarta.

I boarded a military aircraft at 06:00 at a base in Jakarta and was on board for 10 hours, seven of which were spent searching over the Java Sea near Belitung island.

It took us about two hours to reach the area where the authorities believe the plane was when it lost contact with air traffic control in Jakarta.

Our plane was flying very low – about 300-450m (1,000-1,500ft) above sea level. The weather was very clear and the waters relatively calm.

From the aircraft I could just see the water, a small island and a few fishing boats. The search team was trying to find wreckage or some signal from the missing plane. They were looking at the sea through small windows.

I did the same thing, checking the windows every 15 minutes. But I saw nothing.

At around 14:00 the search team found a slick of oil, but the authorities weren’t sure where it had come from.

Announcing the end of the day’s searching, Mr Soelistyo said that today the search area would be widened to cover West Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo, and the southern parts of the waters off the coast of Belitung island.

Weather conditions yesterday were very good, he said, but helicopters involved in the search lacked the visual equipment for searching at night.

The search would continue to focus on oil slicks seen yesterday, Mr Soelistyo added, though it is not clear whether they were caused by the plane. Some ships were still searching for the plane, he added.

  • Restriction in UK airspace, passengers stranded

A computer failure at the United Kingdom’s (UK) air traffic control centre has left UK bound passengers facing widespread flight.

The BBC Nats confirmed a “technical problem” at its Swanwick control centre in Hampshire and said airspace remained opened but restricted.

It said “every possible action” was being taken to resolve the issue.

Heathrow reported delays and Gatwick said all its departing flights had been grounded. Other UK airports reported knock-on effects.

    They said:

    • at Heathrow Airport flights are “currently experiencing delays” and planes could be turned away
    • Incoming flights to Gatwick are continuing to land and all departing flights grounded
    • Stansted say it is currently working with Nats to find out how it will affect the airport

Manchester Airport said it was unaffected by the incident and was ready to accept diverted flights.

Thus, many UK bound passengers have remained stranded at various airports around the world as EasyJet confirms being affected by the restriction.

Passengers are therefore advised to contact their airliners for specific details as regards their journey.

  • London Stock Exchange, GTI to collaborate on capital market development

The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) and GTI Capital Group would work together to further integrate the Nigerian capital market and the global financial markets with a view to deepening the capital formation needed for unlocking Nigeria’s vast investment opportunities.

This understanding was part of the visit of a team from LSEG to GTI Capital Group in Lagos, during which the team visited GTI Securities’ multi-purpose private trading floor, the first of such private trading floor in Sub-Sahara Africa.

Chief of staff and head of international development, London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), Mr. Nikhil Rathi, commended GTI’s vision of seamless facilitation of capital flow and investments between Nigerian and global financial markets.

According to him, GTI’s vision of bringing Africa to the world and bringing the world to Africa is a commendable and noble vision that would lead to development of the Nigerian capital market and the economy.

He noted that with the quality of management and information and communication technologies at GTI, the company is poised to play major role in the integration of Nigerian and global financial markets.

Located on Tinubu Street, in the Marina axis of Lagos’s main Central Business District, the GTI Securities’ private trading floor is a multi-purpose trading floor designed to interface with the most modern trading engines around the world, providing stockbrokers on both sides direct trading opportunity. Already linked and trading online, real time, on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and NASD OTC Plc, the private trading floor is concluding arrangements that will open up similar trading opportunities on the LSEG, New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and other major exchanges.

As a broker-dealer member of the NSE, GTI is also part of the West African Capital Market Integration (WACMI) programme, which is designed to integrate the region’s stock exchanges. The WACMI programme, at full implementation, will enable stockbrokers from any West African country to trade on any of the region’s exchanges and also allow companies to raise capital across the borders. GTI Securities’ private trading engine is designed to trade on all instruments including equities, bonds and derivatives.

Also speaking during the visit, Co-Head of Emerging Markets and Head of Primary Markets, London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), Mr. Ibukun Adebayo, noted that Nigeria, as the largest economy in Africa, has huge opportunities and enormous potential for the development of its capital market and the economy.

He pointed out that Nigerian capital market is still a fraction of the country’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP) whereas it should have been in multiples of the GDP.

He said the LSEG team, which had visited and signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NSE, was in Nigeria to facilitate dual listing and greater connectivity between Nigeria and London.

Group Managing Director, GTI Capital Group, Mr. Abubakar Lawal said he was optimistic that the visit would engender enduring relationship between Nigerian capital market and London stock market.

He said GTI Securities’ private trading floor has created window of opportunities for investors in the United Kingdom, United States of America and other major global financial centres to trade directly on the Nigerian capital market.

According to him, there are huge opportunities in Nigeria’s vast natural resources which a relationship between GTI and other global market operators like LSEG can help to unlock.

“We need to harness the opportunities of immense capital in Europe and Americas to develop opportunities here in Nigeria,” Lawal said.

He pointed out that GTI’s main objective is to put Nigeria back to work by fostering the capital formation needed to resuscitate ailing companies and create new businesses that will provide jobs for Nigerians and enhance national living standards.

In his presentation, the private trading floor manager, Mr Nnamdi Obi, outlined that the trading floor uses a state-of-the-art trading infrastructure-FIX, which allows a broker to trade on any global exchange from the GTI’s floor.

He said the trading floor is already embedded with adequate risk management frameworks to mitigate risks that could come with global trading.

It should be recalled that key stakeholders had earlier visited and commended the private trading floor including the director general of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the chief executive officer and management team of Nigerian Stock Exchange, the president and council members of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS), the chairman and executive members of the Association of Stockbroking Houses of Nigeria (ASHON) and the managing director and directors of NASD OTC Plc among others.

“What I see here today is an example of what Nigeria can achieve with vision. I could not have imagined what I’m seeing here today, it’s absolutely impressive. You have shown that Nigerians are associated with excellence. What I’m seeing, it could be in the city of London, it could be in New York, it could be in Tokyo or it could be in Lagos and it’s in Lagos. A hearty congratulation to GTI, I’m overwhelmed with what I’m seeing,” director general of SEC, Ms Arunma Oteh had said.

Nigeria flaunts containment of Ebola in London

    •Groups launch unite4westafrica

Top government tourism officials from three West African countries – Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal rose in unison to reiterate the region’s strong resolve to fight against Ebola. They also used the forum to tell the world why Ebola should not scare tourists from the region.

Director-General of Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, Mrs Sally Mbanefo reassured the global community that the recent outbreak of Ebola disease in West Africa would not stall the growth of tourism in the region. She stated that in the heat of the battle against Ebola in August, Nigeria held some of its major festivals such as Osun Osogbo, Ojude Oba, New Yam and Sango festival. Theses festivals recorded thousands of foreign tourists as well as locals.

She noted that the success of Nigeria in containing Ebola disease was because it had a committed and focused government where everybody is his brother’s keeper. She also identified the vibrant private sector support, volunteer groups, effective and committed medical officials, effective media campaign and artistes’ community awareness drive as some of the contributing factors. Speaking on how big is the problem of Ebola in Africa for tourism, Mbanefo, said Nigeria was proactive enough in confronting the challenges posed by Ebola diseases saying, Ebola has been consigned to history.

Ghana Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creativity, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare said though Ghana did not experience any Ebola case, it is not unmindful of any preparing for any outbreak. She said Ghana has been able to equip its hospitals while deploying health officials to respective borders to prevent entry of suspected Ebola victim. “Ghana is safe to visit and it is an ideal destination for tourists to Africa because what you need in other African countries are in Ghana. Ebola will not afflict Ghanaians now and in future,” she said.

Ogun State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mrs Yewande Amusan said part of the measures taken by Ogun State government to tackle Ebola were to procure health equipment, establishing of isolation centres, border monitoring, aggressive awareness drive/volunteer works and creation of hotlines for information gathering. She said though Ogun State shares many borders with Lagos and Benin Republic, it never recorded any Ebola case.

Director, Marketing and Communication, Senegal Tourism Promotion Agency,  Houma Mbaye Dia lamented the stigmatisation of West Africans in where there are no cases of Ebola, saying Africa is not a country, but a continent bigger than Europe and America put together. She recalled that the only Ebola case reported in Senegal was on August 29 of a student from Guinea.

In response to the Ebola outbreak and its consequences on West Africa, four travel and tours organisations have launched a campaign forum, unite4westafrica, to raise fund and pledge commitment to continue sharing the stories of West Africa’s beautiful land, culture and people with emphasis on the most affected countries-Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. The launch was held at the World Travel Market in London, last Wednesday during a session on How big is the problem of Ebola in Africa on tourism. The four organisations are West Africa Discovery, Overlanding West Africa, Another World Adventures and Barefoot Liberia.

The campaign will raise funds in part, for Medicins Sans Frontiers (Doctors Without Borders) who are leading the way in saving lives. U4WA will also raise funds for a group of selected grass roots non-profit organisations that have been identified as leaders in community awareness, education and health services in the most affected countries.

According to Founder, Another World Adventure, Larissa Clark, the fundraising would be done through social media, concerts, and events geared at sharing the beauty of West Africa to fight against Ebola and encourage a more positive story of West Africa-one of hope, fascinating cultures, and breathtaking landscapes.

“We want to remind the world that West African countries are known for being friendly, beautiful, exciting and colourful places where hospitality and the arts rule, and where adventure and cultural experiences lay around every corner.

Part of our mission is to encourage travel and exploration of West Africa, as well as the entire continent, to areas that have been deemed safe. Africa is a continent, not a country. Only Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia have been significantly affected by Ebola outbreak.

“There is currently no reason why other countries in West Africa such as Ghana, Gambia, Senegal, Benin and Burkina Faso should not be visited, let alone countries on the other side of the continent like Uganda, Tanzania, and South Africa. And of course to resume travel to the affected countries as soon as it is safe to do so. The campaign is meant to ask friends in the industry and all those searching for a means to help this unfathomable crisis to support our efforts by assisting in our fundraising goals and helping us o share a positive story of West Africa,” she said.

She disclosed that groups such as Africa Travel Association, Intreprid Travel, G Adventures, Explore and Dragoman Overland have joined the campaign.

Continuing, she said: “Ebola has demonstrated to the world that there is a massive need for some counties on the African continent to develop their industry and economy faster. Without it, many African countries remain prone to disease and war. By helping support these economies through tourism, the arts and other industries and by encouraging a global understanding of Africa by looking past the headlines to the true heart of its people, we believe that U4wa can make a difference.”

  • Human trafficking: Nigerians premiere film in London

Human trafficking: Nigerians premiere film in London

A movie re-enactment of the endemic human trafficking vice, among Africans, has opened at the popular Odeon Cinema, London.

The flick, St. Mary, provides another insight into capital flight, forced labour and commercial sexual exploitation. The film could have been positioned as a subtle campaign for Nigerians and other Africans in the Diaspora.

Produced by Obi Osotule and directed by Matthias Obahiagbon, the 110-minute movie follows the story of Tejiri, who uncovers a massive web of conspiracy on human trafficking and crime on board    St.           Mary, an oil vessel on voyage bound for Amsterdam. The movie also narrates the story of Nonye who gets lured by a Facebook confidant and friend into a seeming breakthrough in her singing career. Her excitement banishes caution and her world is thrown into a spiralling string of turmoil and disaster. She lands in a cabal’s dragnet stripping her away from the safety of family and imposing a terrifying adventure amidst her pleas for survival.

The movie also exposes the exploits of Don Daddy, an epitome of success whose massive business empire is built on extraction and sales of human organs. His tentacles spread out to the frontiers of establishment and he lives his fairy tale life in all the perks of comfort with a consortium of agents luring young girls with a promise of better life in Europe until he attracts the petit framed daughter of Prof. Ojukwu whose search pulls Don Daddy’s empire down.

Featuring some of Nollywood’s top-rated actors such as Zack Orji, Ekpeyong Bassey-Inyang, Frank Dallas, Benjamin Joseph, Scott Roberts, Benita Nzeribe, Paul Obazele and Ibinabo Fiberesima, the Executive Producer of the movie Darlington Agha disclosed that the movie will premiered in the United States and Australia after the London premiere. He also disclosed plans to have the movie premiered in Kenya and Uganda before a grand premiere in Nigeria.

‘Human trafficking is a worldwide phenomenon, so it is not out of place to embark on a world tour with the movie so that people can learn from the narrative. So we will take it round and then hold a grand premiere in Nigeria where the movie was shot’’ Agha said.

  • Nigeria’s telecoms service quality better than London’s, Dubai’s, says NCC

Nigeria’s telecoms service quality better than London’s, Dubai’s, says NCC

The Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Communications Commission  (NCC), Dr Eugene Juwah yesterday took a swipe at the barrage of telecoms customers’ complaints in the country over service quality, saying the quality of service (QoS) in the country is one of the best in the world.

Speaking at the 75th Telecoms Consumer Parliament in L:agos, Juwah said he just came back from Central London and Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) insisting that the QoS in those two cities were not better than that offered by telcos in the country.

According to him, the QoS provided by players in both the aviation and banking sectors of the economy were worse than the one offered in the telecoms sector yet not much noise is heard about that.

He said: “I have heard about these complaints about quality of service in Nigeria. The quality of service in Nigeria is not the worst. The quality of service in this country is better than that of  Central London, better than Dubai. Wireless telephony technology is rather complex. You cannot absolutely do without drop calls.”

Juwah who was reacting to the explanation of Corporate Service Executive at MTN, Akinwale Goodluck that QoS get degraded during wet season because of whirlwind, said while he will neither agree nor controvert that position, the technology of global service for mobile (GSM) communication is complex.

He explained that it is not within the mandate of the regulator to compel operators to give financial compensation to customers for poor QoS, adding that its mandate is to ensure that customers get fair deal by ensuring that they get value for their money.

He said the NCC will continue to sanction operators that fail to meet the specified key performance indicators (KPIs) while money paid from the fines will be paid to the coffers of the Federal Government for appropriation since the regulator does not have the power to “appropriate”.

He said customers that feel so aggrieved about the QoS issue should either go to the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) or the court to seek redress.

Goodluck said the operators were doing their best at ensuring improved QoS. He said all the operators have currently engaged all the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to do network optimisation.

He lamented the inability of the operators to tame the excesses of groups and other government agencies that invade base transmission stations (BTS) to decommission them, adding that developments such as that will continue to impact negatively on service quality.

According to him, three of the operators are currently having issues with the government of Enugu State where their facilities have remained shut-down.

He lamented the impunity with which people go and shut down BTS, insisting that nobody goes to Kainji Dam and shut down its operations yet telecoms infrastructure are as critical to national development as power infrastructure.

Speaking on the occasion, its Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, Mrs. Maryam Bayi, decried the low response time to customers’ complaints by the network operators.

She identified common complaints to include unauthorised text messages/telemarketing, ‘credit’ disappearance, drop calls, customers care centre monitoring, inaccessibility of customer care help lines, unlawful deduction of credit for value added services not subscribed to, poor network service unavailability of service and running of adverts for promos without obtaining the mandatory regulatory approvals.
