    Man in court for stabbing neighbour

    Olusegun Coker,36,-who allegedly assaulted his neigbour ,Moshood Ogun, by stabbing him with a broken bottle, was on Friday charged in a Surulere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Coker, who resides at Block 15, Rabiatu Thompson St., Surulere, Lagos, is facing a charge of assault.‎

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 8 at Block 15, Rabiatu Thompson St., Surulere, Lagos.

    Osayande said the accused stabbed Ogun several times on both hands and caused him harm based on a misunderstanding they had.

    “It took some neighbours to stop him and the matter was reported to the police,’’ she said.

    She said the offences contravened Section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 172 stipulates a three-year jail for offenders.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr Aro Lambo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    He said the surety should be a civil servant from grade level 12 and above who should show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

    Lambo adjourned the case until Oct. 17 for mention.

    Trader charged with break-in, stealing

    A 27-year-old trader, Matthew Alebiosu, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly breaking into an apartment to steal phones.

    Alebiosu, a resident of Egbeda area of Lagos, is charged with burglary and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, said that the accused committed the offences on June 19 at Alaja Road, Ayobo, Lagos.

    He said that the accused and one other person still at large conspired to burgle the apartment of one Mr Adeyinka Dada, stealing a Blackberry phone and one Ipad mini phone, both valued at N27,600.

    Ayorinde said that the accused jumped into the compound of the complainant and destroyed the window burglar proof to gain access into the flat.

    “He was, however, arrested when he wanted to sell one of the phones at the computer village; having sold one already,” the prosecutor said.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 287 and 307 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 307 prescribes seven years jail term for burglary.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mrs J. O. Awope, adjourned the case till July 10 for mention.

    Court remands man over alleged cell phone theft

    An Osun Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ile-Ife, on Thursday ordered the remand of one Eluwale Abayomi, 23, in prison for allegedly stealing a cell phone valued at N100,000.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 19, 2017 around 2 p.m. at Adedoyin Way, Mayfair, and Ile-Ife.

    Osanyintuyi said that the accused conspired with others now at large to commit the offence.

    He said that the accused stole one Techno C9 handset valued at N100, 000, property of one Olubunmi Martins.

    According to him, the offence was contrary to and punishable under Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol 11, Laws of Osun, 2002.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count-charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The Magistrate, Olalekan Ijiyode, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until June 30, for hearing.

    Apprentice bags two months imprisonment for stealing motor batteries

    A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday sentenced a 29-year-old apprentice, Sodiq Oloko, to two months imprisonment for stealing two motor batteries valued at N116, 000.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. A.A Paul, who pronounced the verdict, however, ordered that the two months’ imprisonment was without any option of fine.

    Oloko faced a two-count charge of stealing and malicious damage.

    The accused, whose address was not provided, pleaded guilty to the charge.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 30 at No. 14, Sologun St., Aguda, Surulere, Lagos, at about 03.00 a.m.

    He alleged that the accused went to the store room of the workshop where he was an apprentice and stole two motor batteries valued at N116,000, property of Ben Adeniyi

    The prosecutor said the accused maliciously damaged two padlocks to the store room, valued N1, 500‎ making it to seem as if someone broke into the store room. ‎

    He noted that the offence contravened Sections 285(1) and 348 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

     

     

  • Two docked for stealing N13, 500

    Two boys who allegedly stole N13, 500 cash from a woman were on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    James Peter, 20, and Seyi Idowu, 18, whose addresses were not provided, are facing a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

    They, however, entered a `not guilty’ plea.

    But the Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 25 at Karaole Estate, Ogba, in Lagos.

    According to him, the accused entered the same tricycle with the complainant, one Chioma Martins, who sat at the middle, but when she alighted, she discovered that her N13, 500 cash had disappeared from her pocket.

    “She shouted for help and the accused were apprehended immediately by passers-by.”

    Their offences contravene Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The section stipulates a three-year jail term for convicted offenders.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. G.O. Anifowoshe, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N10, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Anifowoshe adjourned the case until May 22, for mention.

     

  • Police arraign 53, arrested at gay wedding in Zaria

    The Police on Wednesday arraigned 53 persons before a Magistrates’ Court in Chediya-Zaria, Kaduna State who were allegedly arrested during a gay marriage.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Mannir Nasir said the accused were arrested on April 15 at Zaria Motel and were being charged for conspiracy, unlawful assembly and belonging to a gang of unlawful society.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 97, 100 and 197(a) of Criminal Procedure Code [CPC].

    “On April 15, 2017 at about 2100 hours a team of policemen led by DSP Muhammad Lawal-Mashi arrested and brought to police station 53 persons.

    “The arrested persons included; Jibril Abdullahi, Sagir Abubakar, Anas Mohammed, Mustapha Ababukar, Musa Ibrahim and Suleiman Usman among others, all of various addresses.

    “Information reached the police that these group of persons conspired to celebrate a gay marriage at Zaria Motel between one Faruk and Sanusi both at large,” the prosecutor said.

    The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, and their counsel, Yunusa Umar asked the court to release them on bail in line with sections 35 (4) and 36 (5) of the Constitution.

    Umar lamented that the accused persons were detained in police custody for more than 24 hours contrary to the provisions of section 341 of CPC.

    He told the court that most of the accused persons were students in their tender age.

    The Chief Magistrate, Auwal Musa-Aliyu, granted bail to the accused persons in the sum of N500,000 each, with one surety each in the like sum, who must be a blood relation to the accused.

    He ordered that each surety must present two passport size photographs, valid identity card, bank account number, letter of credence from a traditional ruler, a 2015 utility bill and a valid GSM number.

    The Chief Magistrate adjoined the case till May 8, for further hearing.

     

  • Court remands five men for disturbing, obstructing journalists

     

    A  Senior Magistrates’ Court sitting in Kano on Tuesday remanded five men in prison for allegedly disturbing and obstructing NTA journalists from discharging their professional duties.

    The accused persons are Abba Abdullahi, 32, Mansir Sale, 28, Bashir Saminu, 27, Yusuf Tijjani, 30 and Shazali Tasiu, 38.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Judge, Aminu Fagge, ordered their remand and adjourned the case until April 20 for ruling on their bail applications.

    All the accused persons are facing a five-count charge of criminal conspiracy, criminal force, inciting disturbance, mischief and obstructing public servants in discharging her duty.

    The five accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Yusuf Sale, had told the court that one Hajiya Binta Adamu of NTA Kano and Abdulrashid Nasir of Kofar Wambai Market, Kano, jointly reported the case at Kofar Wambai Police Division.

    “The accused persons, on April 10 at about 3:55 p.m., criminally conspired to obstruct Binta from performing her lawful and official duty at Kofar Wambai Market as assigned by the NTA Kano.

    “The accused persons, with others at large, beat them up and tore Nasir’s clothes,” he said.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened Sections 97, 265, 114, 327 and 149 of the Penal Code.

     

  • Businessman, charged with raping 11-year-old twin sisters

    A Kano Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded in prison a 30-year-old businessman, Lawan Zubairu, over alleged rape of 11-year-old set of twins.

    Zubairu, who lives at Hotoron Fulani Quarters, Kano, is facing a charge of rape to which he pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Muhammad Jibril, who gave the order, said the accused should remain behind the bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Rufa’I Inusa told the court that the complainant, Ibrahim Musa, of Hotoron Fulani Quarters reported the case on March 18.

    Inusa alleged that the accused lured the complainant’s daughters into his room and defiled them.

    The offence contravened Section 283 of the Penal Code, Laws of the Federation.

    The case was adjourned until April 27 for mention.

  • Man docked for N2.4m fraud

    A 44-year-old businessman, Joseph Ebiloma, who allegedly defrauded two people of N2.4 million to purchase vehicles for them, on Thursday, appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

     

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of theft and fraud and was granted N1 million bail with two sureties in like sum.

     

    The Magistrate, Mr Ade Adefulire, said one of the sureties should be a car owner while the other surety must have up to N500, 000 in his bank account.

     

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Ben Ekundayo, the accused had on June 16, 2015 at Thomas Estate, Ajah, obtained N2.4 million from two people on the pretext of helping them to purchase a Rav4 SUV and a bus.

     

    He said Ebiloma collected N1 million from Mrs Justina Akpan and another N1.4 million from Mr Segun Akerele.

     

    The accused failed to deliver the vehicles as promised and did not refund the money, he told the court.

     

    The offences contravened Sections 285 and 321 (1), (a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (as amended).

     

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that section 285 prescribes three years for stealing, while Section 312 stipulates 15 years imprisonment for offenders.

     

    The case was adjourned until March 30 for hearing.

  • Six farmers in court for burning old men

    A Makurdi Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded six farmers who allegedly burnt an old man to death and injured four others.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Franca Yuwa, remanded the accused at the Makurdi Prisons custody, and adjourned the case until May 10 for mention.

    The court could not take the plea of the accused as Yuwa said that she needed the advice of the state’s director of public prosecutions.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused are Celestine Abwa, Apuu Orkaa, Aondohemba Terkula, Terhemen Tseua, Asue Iorker and Teryima Ukete.

    They were charged with conspiracy, mischief and homicide.

    The farmers, who hail from Agelaga Kohov Shangev-ya in Adikpo Local Government Area of Benue, allegedly burnt Mr Michael Atse to death and caused various degrees of injuries on four other elders.

    The four others are Messrs Alkali Gbodi, Ashim Labe, Ape Labe and Feerenga Apine.

    The accused allegedly burnt the old people, who they claimed bewitched their friend, Mr Msughter Azua, to death.

    The prosecutor, Magistrates’ Court, told the court that the case was reported to the Adikpo Police Division by Msughter Azua’s brother, William, on March 6.

    According to the prosecutor, William, said that his younger brother, Msughter, got ill and died a natural death but the accused, who were his friends, went and picked the elders in the family.
    According to him, the accused claimed that the five elders bewitched their friend – Msughter- to death.

    Owochio submitted that the accused tortured the elders and set fire on them.

    He said that the accused burned Atser to death and caused the other four to sustain various degrees of injuries.

    The prosecutor submitted that that the accused also damaged the windscreen Feeranga Apine’s Toyota Carina E marked YGJ 306 AA.

    He said that investigations into the case were still ongoing, and asked the court for another date for mention.
