    Housekeeper bolts with N4.6m jewellery

    For allegedly stealing her employer’s jewellery valued at N4.6 million, a 23-year-old housekeeper, Idowu Adeyeye, was on Monday brought before an Abule-Egba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused, who lives with her employer at Ijaiye Medium Housing Estate, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and causing a breach of peace.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Rachael Williams told the court that the offences were committed on May 28 at his employer’s residence.

    According to her, the accused with others still at large stole jewellery valued at N4.6 million, property of the complainant, Mrs Titilayo Ogundipe.

    “The complainant got home from work to discover that the door to her room was opened and all her gold jewellery were missing.

    “The housekeeper disappeared after the incident, but was later arrested following a tip-off,’’ Williams said.

    The offence, she noted, contravened Sections 166 (d), 278 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offences.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Adenike Shonubi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N2.5 million with two sureties in like sum.

    She adjourned the case to June 15 for trial

  • Two arraigned for beating policeman

    Two men, Sulaiman Tella, 23, and Jelili Shoyoye, 20, were on Thursday arraigned at an Abeokuta Magistrate’s Court for beating a policeman.

    Police prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Eigbejiale, told the court that the act was carried out on Nov. 1 at about 2 p.m. at Saraki area of Abeokuta.

    Eigbejiale said that the accused brutally assaulted Insp. Alabi Oke, stationed in Lagos but was in Abeokuta to visit his family.

    According to him, the accused, who were on a motorcycle, rode at a high speed and Oke tried to caution them but they alighted from the motorcycle and started beating him.

    He said that the policeman was seriously injured, with one of his fingers bitten off, and was hospitalised.

    The prosecutor said that the offences of conspiracy and assault contravened the Criminal Code of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges and the Magistrate, Mr Martins Akinyemi, granted them bail for N80,000 with two sureties, each in like sum.

    Akinyemi adjourned the case to Jan. 30, 2014, for hearing. (NAN)

  • Man, 25, arraigned for alleged possession of £3,720 and assault

    For allegedly being in possession of £3,720 and assaulting one Solomon Edache, a 25 year old man was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, Lagos.

    The defendant, Gabriel Ochuga, who faced a two Count charge of assault and illegal possession before Magistrate Dan Oni, allegedly committed the offence on March 31, about 11:30pm, at Ajah.

    Prosecuting Inspector Edet Okoi, alleged that Ochuga assaulted Edache, who happens to be his friend because the complainant demanded his share of the money.

    He said: “It appears the duo dragged over the money. Edache wanted to have his share of the Pound Sterling the defendant claimed to have picked but the defendant refused and assaulted him.

    “Angered by the development, Edache took the matter to the police station, where he disclosed that the defendant had £3,720 in his possession.

    “The defendant could not account for the said sum which was suspected to have been stolen.”

    He added that the defendant told the police during investigation that he picked the said sum.

    Okoi said the offence was contrary to and punishable under Sections 168 and 327 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2011.

    Ochagu pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in N500, 000 with two sureties each in like sum. The matter has been adjourned to May 13, for trial.

    In another development, three fake estate agents, including a woman were arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding one Frederick Akinsulire of N4 million.

    The defendants, Joy Thelma, 34; Gbolahan Shodipo, 40 and Taiwo Ogundare, 36, are standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Stephen Molo, told the court that the trio, all resident in Ikotun, committed the offences on January 10, at block A, Plot 7, Diamond Estate.

    “They conspired to defraud Akinsulire of N4 million.

    “The defendants obtained the sum from Akinsulire, with the pretence of selling a house, which is situated at block A plot 7, Diamond Estate along Isheri Road, to him.

    “When the complainant suspected that they were fraudsters, he reported the case at the police station. The offence contravened Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2011,” Molo said.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges and were granted bail in N500, 000 with two sureties each in like sum by Magistrate F.O. Aigbokhaevo. She adjourned the case till April 24, for mention.

    Woman docked for ‘bathing another with pepper’

    A 27-year-old woman, Patience Edet, has been charged before an Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court with allegedly bathing her friend, Rose Agali, 26, with pepper.
    The accused is facing a two count-charge of assault and breach of peace, punishable under Section 171 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2011.
    Prosecuting Corporal Oladejo Balogun told the court that the offence was committed at 11, Olowu Street, Egan, a Lagos suburb.
    Trouble started after Patience allegedly asked Rose to leave her lover, Emmey, without success.
    The accused, who blamed the complainant for her failed relationship, told the court that she warned Rose to  allow Emmey come back to her. Rose, Patience added, refused, insisting that she also loves him.
    Patience alleged that Rose told her that Emmey  who approached her and as such she could not let him go.
    Angry at her friend’s response, the accused allegedly blended pepper, mixed it with water and poured the substance on Rose’ face and body.
    After bathing her with the substance, Patience allegedly beat her up. The complainant was injured and rushed to a hospital.
    Rose who told the court that she went out that fateful day, said she did not know Patience had ground pepper and was waiting for her return.
    She said she was shocked when the substance was poured on her by the accused who also beat her up, knocking off one of her teeth.
    The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted N50,000 bail, with one surety in the like sum by Magistrate M.B. Folami, who adjourned the matter till November 14.
