    Maikaba: Wikki have got their groove back

    Owerri Wikki Tourists FC head coach, Abdu Maikaba has told SportingLife that he is enthusiastic about the form of his boys whom have been finding it difficult to score  before the league embarked on a recess after they fired lots of goals in the Bauchi FA Cup competition.

    The Bauchi side beat Zabgai 5-0 to lift the FA Cup title again and this come after they had beaten their foes 3-0 in the semi-final before the date with Zabgai in the final.

    He said he was happy that his boys scored plenty of goals in the FA Cup competition without conceding any goals and that he would like his team to carry that form to their Match Day Four clash with Abia Warriors in Umuahia this weekend.

    “We are gradually getting our groove back and I am happy about this. We found scoring difficult in our last home game but I am glad that we are getting over our challenges and before you know it we will be very hard to beat in the league by the time my players have blended together,” Maikaba told SportingLife in a brief interview yesterday night.

    Wikki are seventh on the log with four points from three games.

    Maikaba wants gradual reduction of players

    Wikki Tourists head coach, Abdu Maikaba has revealed to SportingLife that he doesn’t oppose the plan downsize of the players of the club but that it must be progressively done so that it doesn’t hamper the club’s chances in the league this season.

    The Chairman of the Bauchi based club, suleiman Chindo recently told sports writers that the team would be culled down to 25 as against the present 35 but Maikaba argued that the decision may be premature if not done with the future interest of the team in mind.

    He said it made be possible to observe the chop by mid season when some matches would have been decided noting that if such is done now it would derail the club’s chances of getting a continental ticket at the end of the season.

    Nonetheless he also added that the players and technical officials of the team who have proceeded on a break because of the 2015 March 28 general elections are expected back in Bauchi on Wednesday in readiness for the Match Day Four where they will be away to Abia Warriors.

    Wikki appoints Maikaba as new technical adviser

    The management of Wikki Tourists Football Club of Bauchi has appointed Abdu Maikaba as the new technical adviser.

    Maikaba replaced the former handler, Tunde Abdulrahman, who also applied for the job.

    The former Enyimba FC chief coach got the job ahead of the likes of Evans Ogenyi, Zachary Baraje among others.

    The chairman of the club Sule Abdullahi Chindo confirmed to SportingLife through the media officer of the club Usman Abbas Shehu.

    “Some coaches were invited for interviews this month and out of those that were invited, the management decided to engage coach Abdu Maikaba based on his merit that fulfilled our conditions,” Chindo said.

    The former Gombe United player, however, expressed gratitude to all coaches that showed interest in the club, describing them as well experienced and qualified coaches. “The appointment of Maikaba as the technical adviser amongst them is the will of God and prayed for their success.”

    On the issue of chief coach, Chindo said the management has yet to discuss on that, saying: “Before the season commences the name of the chief coach will be made public through the media officer.”

    Meanwhile, the club’s image maker, Shehu revealed that all the retained players and some of the invited new players including the uninvited were on the training ground with the new coach which attracted thousands of supporters and fans watching the training, shouting and clapping hands to express their satisfaction on the way and manner the training was going on.

  • Maikaba happy to be alive

    The chief coach of Kano Pillars, Abdullahi Maikaba, is happy to be alive after his close shave with death during an accident on Thursday.

    The crash occurred when the vehicle carrying six members of the Pillars technical crew had an accident on the Kano-Zaria Road on their way from Ilorin.

    Maikaba sustained a back injury and a slight hurt to his right hand but confirmed he had been discharged, although he is to return to the hospital for routine checks.

    The former Enyimba coach said he was relieved to be alive.

    “I was discharged Thursday night. I have an injury in my right hand and my back still hurts. I will still go back for further medical examination.”

    Maikaba also debunked the impression that the vehicle was on high speed before the accident happened. He said: “We were not running too much at all. The driver was just driving at the speed limit of 100km per hour. We always caution our drivers against over-speeding.”
