Don’t blame us for PDP crisis, APC tells Makinde

The  All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned the opposition  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to desist from blaming it for its  crisis.

Rather, APC counseled the opposition to do a soul searching and address its inability to handle the party’s implosion and decay.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde at a  recent  event in Ibadan blamed the APC for the turmoil in PDP and other opposition parties.

But  the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, in a statement yesterday  in Abuja advised the governor to focus on his primary assignment of providing good governance to his people  and not to arrogantly pointed accusing fingers at APC for the rot in his party.

Likening Makinde’s outburst to the proverbial bad workman that blames his tools, Morka noted that the governor and his co-confused leaders of the PDP should  stop pointing fingers at the APC and take full responsibility for their  failure to handle the party’s implosion and decay.

Dismissing the governor’s unfounded allegations, the APC spokesman said Makinde “has become the leading but rather shoddy drummer for his 2027 political ambition. While our democracy affords Makinde the liberty to his political aspiration, however, engaging in reckless executive flippancy, at the expense of the job he was elected to do as Governor, is a disservice to the good people of Oyo State.

“Makinde’s unhinged 2027 ambition cannot be founded upon his unguarded and unjustified attacks against our great party or the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that has launched the boldest and most ambitious reform effort in history to transform our country’s economy and build a solid foundation for progress.”

Highlighting the achievements of the APC-led administration, Morka noted that, “our country now exporting more than we are importing with a trade surplus of nearly N7 billion at the end of Q2 of 2024, improved revenue-to-debt service ratio from 97 percent in 2023 to 68 percent in 2024, with foreign reserve upwards of $40billion, with the economy expanding by 3.19%, achieving impressive non-oil export diversification, with one of the world’s most profitable stock exchange markets, with a massive infrastructure revolution underway,  with remarkable innovation in welfare and social security evidenced by the Nigerian Credit Corps, National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND),  upward minimum wage review and massive cash transfers to over 25 million of Nigeria’s poorest, among other interventions, our country is on the cusp of prosperity and enduring greatness.”

Accusing Makinde of leadership deficiency, the APC noted that his lackluster performance as Governor speaks for itself, and undermines his credibility.

“Instead of prioritising the needs of Oyo people who elected him to tackle their local issues, he has chosen to divert his attention and squander the state’s resources in pursuit of unhinged 2027 ambition. Makinde must know that Nigeria’s scale and complexities demand more than his vain and self-indulgent ambition.

“Makinde cannot even speak for the people of Oyo State regarding their future electoral choices or decisions let alone speak for Nigerians. Makinde and his partisan cohorts are only worried stiff that the looming transformation and prosperity from  President Tinubu’s economic policies will consign their 2027 ambitions and calculations into the trash-bin of political irrelevance.”

The ruling party  urged Nigerians to continue to stand firm in support of President Tinubu as the administration’s reform policies begin to yield the desired benefits for all Nigerians.

2027: Nobody can set agenda for me – Makinde

Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde on Saturday said nobody apart from himself can set agenda for him on what to do next with his political career.

Apparently reacting to insinuations of him declaring for the presidential race in 2027, Makinde said he disagreed with those accusing the ruling party of interfering with other political parties in the country so as not to have opposition in the next election.

Rather, he charged leaders of the leading opposition party across board to look inwards and see how they can work together and salvage the country, adding that the next election will be between the ruling party and Nigerians.

Makind spoke in a remark while commissioning the newly built Olusoji Adagunodo Southwest Zonal Secretariat.

IT was all festivities at the weekend in Ibadan, Oyo State, as dignitaries attended the inauguration of several multi-million-naira infrastructure projects funded by the Old Boys Association of Government College Ibadan (GCI).

The projects were officially inaugurated by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to commemorate the school’s 95th anniversary of the institution which has undergone a significant transformation following completion of the projects.

The notable projects include the renovation of the Principal’s Lodge by the 1964 set, the construction of Grier House by Dr. Olawale Babalakin (1971), football pitch refurbished by 1973 Set and the refurbishment of the dining hall by Demola Odutola (1970).

Other completed projects include the renovation of the assembly hall, technical drawing building, buttery, and quadrangle buildings.

These efforts have significantly improved GCI’s infrastructure, benefiting students, teachers and the school’s overall academic environment.

During the inauguration ceremony, Makinde praised the old boys for their dedication to GCI’s revitalisation.

Emphasising their crucial role in addressing infrastructure gaps in education, the governor expressed his commitment to supporting their efforts in securing a brighter future for Nigerian children.

He said: “Only the gifted will be sent here.”

National President of GCIOBA, Dr. Olawale Babalakin, expressed gratitude for the state government’s support and highlighted Governor Makinde’s instrumental role in enabling their success.

He stressed the importance of repositioning education in the country and urged other alumni associations to collaborate with the government in improving schools.

Dr. Babalakin, who was re-elected GCIOBA President, promised that teachers employed by the association will receive their salaries on or before the 25th of every month, starting this month.

He expressed the association’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers.

“We should also state that in October 2024, salaries will be paid on or before the 25th of every month. Donors should please ensure that their commitments are paid long before then to enable the Treasury to implement a very good plan,” he said.

He also revealed that the association’s Teachers’ Support Fund can currently support twenty teachers, with plans to increase that number to forty-five.

“We aim to employ forty-five exceptional teachers to raise the standard of education at GCI,” Babalakin noted.

He acknowledged the contributions of the North America branch, which currently funds eight teachers and two technical staff, as well as other Old Boys who have supported the employment of 10 teachers.

Vice President of GCIOBA, Tola Obembe, described the old boys’ efforts as a way of giving back to the institution that shaped them. He thanked the Oyo State government for allowing the association to manage and upgrade the school.

GCIOBA General Secretary Lanre Olubi outlined the association’s ambitious 25-year plan to elevate GCI to one of the top 10 schools in Nigeria. He emphasized the need for continued support from Old Boys to achieve these targets, particularly in attracting and retaining quality teachers.

During the school’s week-long celebration, former acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Adebisi Shonubi, delivered a lecture titled “How, What We Do?” He highlighted the importance of teacher quality in improving student outcomes and stressed the need for teachers to employ effective pedagogical strategies to enhance student learning.

“Teacher quality refers to the way teachers employ their knowledge, skill, and ability to develop meaningful pedagogic experience for students. It alludes to students- teachers’ interaction in the classroom and teachers’ behaviour that enhances positive educational outcomes in students,” he said.

This, the former CBN Governor said would help build a robust economy, as you can only give what you have.

Shonubi emphasised the crucial role of teacher quality in improving student outcomes. While highlighting that effective teachers possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to create meaningful learning experiences for students, the speaker stated that the result of the teachers efforts are felt much later in the future and is reflected when such a student takes up leadership role thereby giving back meaningfully to the economy at large.

Oyo partners Finland to refurbish technical colleges, says Makinde

Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde, has said his government will refurbish technical colleges and re-launch vocational education in the state.

The governor who noted that the initiative is aimed at addressing youth unemployment, said the state government, with the support of the Finnish government, will undertake the refurbishing of technical colleges in the state.

He said the move is imperative in view of growing concerns over the dearth of vocational skills among the youth populace and the relegation of technical education.

Governor Makinde stated this at the weekend while speaking at the Ajegunle Baptist Church, Saki, at the funeral service for a former Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Chief Michael Koleoso (OFR), who passed away few weeks ago.

The governor, who eulogised the late elder statesman for being selfless and always seeking the development of his community and the state, said the quality of advice he received from Pa Koleoso helped him personally and also in the administration and development of the state.

He named the 9.7km Saki Township Road after the late politician, adding that the State Executive Council had also concluded plans to rename the Oke Ogun Polytechnic, Saki after Koleoso.

According to the governor, Pa Koleoso never played politics of religion or divisive tendencies, saying he always advised him (governor) on several matters of concern to the state, including the ongoing rehabilitation of roads in Ibadan, the state capital.

He said: “We thank God for today because we are here to celebrate a life well-lived. There is no doubt we lost one of our finest minds, be it in business, management, governance and even politics.

“It is a personal loss to me, because Baba told everybody till he breathed his last that though he had quit politics, he wouldn’t stop supporting Seyi Makinde’s government. So, I had the opportunity to spend quality time with Baba. And I can tell you that Baba never requested for anything for himself or his children.

“Before he died, he told me that there was no Permanent Secretary from Oke-Ogun serving in this government but I told him there used to be but they retired. So, he requested that they should be replaced and it was done.

“In another instance, he told me we needed to fix Ibadan apart from linking all the zones and I said we would do that. If you go to the state capital today, you can see the works we have done and they are still ongoing. That is the quality of advice I received from Baba. Not only am I am better for it but the state has also benefitted from his wise counsel.

“Also, a few days before his passing, I was in Finland and he called me while we were engaging the education officials there. They said they place more emphasis on technical education and not paper qualification. Then, I told Baba that one of the requests he gave me would be worked upon, which was that the Saki Technical College must be refurbished and re-launched.

“It will be done with the assistance of the government of Finland, I have signed it already. The Technical College in Ibadan and the one in Saki will be the first to be refurbished and it will happen starting from the 2025 budget.”

Governor Makinde equally said his government would complete the Saki-Ogbooro-Igboho Road in honour of Pa Koleoso, who prevailed on him to see to the project to the end.

He added that his government is aware of the fact that the economies of Saki East, Oorelope, Olorunsogo and Irepo Local Governments are intricately tied to Saki, so it would also extend the road from Igboho to Igbeti and Kisi.

This was as the governor declared that the State Executive Council had also approved that the spur of the road that connects Agbonle in Saki East Local Government should also be fixed.

Earlier in his message, the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, eulogised the uncommon virtues of the late Chief Koleoso, promising to work with the Oyo State Government to immortalise the late political icon, who according to him, contributed immensely to national growth and politics.

The president was represented by the Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr Zacchaeus Adedeji.

The funeral service had in attendance dignitaries including National Assembly members as well as serving and former federal officials.

On the entourage of the governor were the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barr. Bayo Lawal and his wife, Ajibola; PDP Deputy National Chairman (South) and former deputy governor of Oyo State, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja; former Deputy Governor, Alhaji Hassim Gbolarunmi; Chief Judge of Oyo State, Honourable Justice Iyabo Yerima represented by Justice M.O Ishola; and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu.

Others were co-chairman of the Oyo State Elders’ Council, Dr Saka Balogun; commissioners and other top government functionaries.

Ondo 2024: ‘Makinde wrong calling for REC’s removal’

The All Progressives Congress in Ondo State has faulted Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for the removal of Mrs. Babalola Oluwatoyin as the State Resident Electoral Commissioner ahead of next month’s polls.

It said neither Ondo State nor the electoral body was an appendage of Oyo State “where he rules as an administrator.”

The Ondo APC said Mrs. Babalola has demonstrated integrity, competence and capacity to handle any election.

Spokesman for the Ondo APC, Alex Kalejaiye, in a statement, said it was ludicrous for Governor Makinde to give such a directive when he neither influenced the REC’s transfer to Ondo state nor is he a player on the political space of the State.

The statement said, it was insulting for Makinde to have advised Ondo electorates not to sell their conscience, saying that Ondo people were politically sophisticated entity that acted out of conviction and not cheap.

It said the Ondo APC has unbeatable structures across the state capable of defeating any party in any election.

According to the statement, “Besides, the recent defection of notable political giants from his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has further fortified the chances of APC in November.

“It is therefore clear that our party won’t need to indulge in those undemocratic gymnastics employed by the PDP to win Oyo for Makinde in 2019. Fear not, Mr. Governor.

Similarly, a statement by Oyo APC Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, urged INEC, security agencies and relevant stakeholders to watch out for some desperate elements who might want to employ cheap blackmail and intimidation in their desperate bid to mess up the proper conduct of the November poll in the Sunshine state.

“We found the public conduct of Governor Makinde in Ondo state as highly embarrassing as he did not represent the good people of Oyo state who have a chequered record of peace keeping and brotherliness with the rest of the country particularly in the whole of Yorubaland.

“It is rather unfortunate that a supposed leader from the Pacesetter state would go to a sister state to intimidate the indigenous population in the guise of giving an address during a political campaign.

“Also, we make bold to say that Gov. Makinde lacks the moral rights to accuse anyone of plans to compromise the conduct of an election since his emergence as the winner of the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections in Oyo state were made possible on account of abracadabra and unprecedented sharp practices.

It said Mrs. Babalola has demonstrated integrity, competence and capacity to handle any election.

In a statement, the spokesperson for Ondo APC, Alex Kalejaiye, criticized Governor Makinde’s directive, calling it absurd. He pointed out that Makinde had no role in the transfer of Mrs. Omobolanle to Ondo State and holds no political influence within the state.

The statement described Makinde’s advice to Ondo voters not to sell their conscience as insulting, noting that the people of Ondo are politically sophisticated and act on conviction, not easily swayed.

It added that the Ondo APC has strong, unbeatable structures across the state, capable of defeating any party in any election.

“Our counsel to the governor is to focus on  the myriad of problems currently facing Oyo State. It is sad that Oyo State is being run as a conquered territory, where the degree of capital flight is second to no other in the country.

The leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southwest and Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has said the party would continue to protest until the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Babalola Oluwatoyin, is removed.

The governor spoke in Akure at the flag-off of the PDP campaign ahead of next month’s governorship election.

The rally was held along the busy Oba Adesida-Oyemekun road as the party was denied use of the Democracy Park.

Makinde said the party was not afraid of a fair contest, but needed a REC that is not from Ondo State.

He said: “I have a message for INEC national Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu. You must remove Ondo REC. She is from Ondo State. Her family lives here. We will continue to protest until she is removed.”

He urged PDP members to go out and woo voters for the party.

A former Governor of Ebonyi State, Sam Egwu, said last month’s governorship election in Edo State was a fraud.

Egwu, who represented the PDP Board of Trustee Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, said the party would not allow a repeat of what happened in Edo State.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure a free and fair election in Ondo State.

The Chairman of PDP Governor’s Forum, Bala Mohammed, said the party would not allow the country to become a one-party state as well as condone injustice.

Muhammed urged party supporters not to allow anybody to deceive them to create problems in the party. He urged them not to sleep until Agboola emerged as governor.

He added: “The party is one. There is no faction, no division. Nobody should deceive you to create a problem. We want change in this country.”

National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagun, said the Ondo governorship poll was a time to pay the APC back in its coin.

Ambassador Damagun told Ondo people that next month’s poll was an opportunity to change the narrative and change hunger.

The acting national chairman who expressed optimism about victory at the polls said the party’s candidate, Agboola Ajayi, would deliver dividends of democracy.

Ajayi, who declared that ‘I have a wife’, said the state does not need any crisis.
