He stated that the birthday of the governor is a moment to reflect on an enduring legacy anchored in compassion, selfless service, and a steadfast commitment to the welfare of the people.

OID highlighted the Governor’s rise from humble beginnings, noting that his life journey reflected resilience, integrity, and leadership driven by purpose.

Alaafin hails Makinde’s leadership, praises governor’s vision, courage

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has described Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, as a leader who exemplifies the rare blend of sound thinking and decisive action.

He said the governor has consistently demonstrated the qualities of a good leader, particularly the courage to take bold decisions and the readiness to bear the consequences of such actions.

The monarch made the remarks through his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, in a congratulatory message to Governor Makinde on his birthday.

According to Oba Owoade, Makinde came into office with a clear vision backed by courage and competence, noting that his belief in probity has continued to drive the steady progress being recorded in Oyo State.

“Governor Makinde is more interested in people who can sustain his institutional reforms and other legacies than in personal preferences,” the Alaafin said.

He added that the governor values brilliance, truthfulness and hard work, stressing that anyone who aligns with his vision would find him ready to work with them.

“He runs an inclusive government, but you can only benefit if you key into his vision of RTR—reformation, transformation and repositioning. Governor Makinde is a true believer who fears God and is in tune with the spirit of the word of God. He is neither arrogant nor uncouth or incoherent,” the monarch stated.

Oba Owoade further noted that the people of Oyo State would remain grateful to Governor Makinde for what he described as unprecedented achievements with far-reaching impact on the lives of residents.

He prayed God to grant the governor long life, good health and divine guidance as he continues to shoulder the demanding responsibilities of governance.

  • 2027: Tinubu will win Oyo convincingly, Ex-Oyo chief whip slams Makinde

2027: Tinubu will win Oyo convincingly, Ex-Oyo chief whip slams Makinde

A former Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Abiodun Adigun-Hammed, has predicted a landslide victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Oyo State in the 2027 elections.

Adigun-Hammed described as “unthinkable” the idea that President Tinubu would entrust the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State to Governor Seyi Makinde.

His comments came in reaction to statements attributed to Makinde during a media chat on Tuesday, in which the governor allegedly claimed that former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike offered to deliver Oyo State to Tinubu—a proposal Makinde purportedly declined.

In a statement, Adigun-Hammed dismissed Makinde’s claim as false, asserting that the governor could not be trusted with any political arrangement. He cited Makinde’s alleged betrayals of former governor and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, Senator Sarafadeen Alli, and other political stakeholders who supported him in 2019, warning that such behavior could extend to anyone.

The former lawmaker also raised questions about a contract Makinde said he was awarded in 1997, reportedly valued at $1 million, urging Nigerians to seek clarity on its execution.

Adigun-Hammed further claimed that the APC was gaining momentum in Oyo State, arguing that residents were beginning to see through what he called Makinde’s “pretence and political games.”

“Makinde has proved to be a serial liar and pretender. How can his ally ask President Tinubu to give Oyo State to ‘arrange’ for us, when we have three senators, nine House of Representatives members, three former deputy governors, ex-ministers, and experienced politicians? Such a claim is a lie from the pit of hell,” he said.

He also accused Makinde of failing to acknowledge the support he received from the President and other stakeholders during his re-election bid in 2023, instead repaying them with falsehoods.

Looking ahead to 2027, Adigun-Hammed expressed full confidence that President Tinubu would defeat Governor Makinde—and any candidate Makinde supports—predicting a decisive victory for the APC in Oyo State.

    • Oyo governor alleges Wike pledged to ‘hold down PDP’ for President

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde yesterday warned that the collapse of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a result of its protracted crisis could spell doom for democracy and pave the way for a one-party state.

He alleged a plot by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike to “hold down” the main opposition party for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is seeking re-election in 2027.

Makinde, who is an arrowhead of the PDP, said that he rejected the President’s offer to him to dump the party and reorganise the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The governor, who supported President Tinubu during the 2023 poll along with his colleagues in the “Group of Five Governors (G-5,” foreclosed similar support for his second term.

He lamented that his support for the president during the last election did not produce the outcome he had hoped for.

Makinde spoke on the PDP crisis, his rift with Wike, why he refused to defect to the APC, among other issues in a media chat from Ibadan which was aired on major television channels.

He fielded question from an array of top journalists.

As a member of G-5, led by Wike, he worked against the 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, alleging the neglect of zoning by the party.

Other members of the then G-5 governors are ex-Governor Ifeanyi Uguwanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Samuel Ortom (Benue).

Makinde said his decision to back Tinubu was based on the belief that he would act in the national interest if elected.

He said: “I am human. I supported the current president, even though in another party at that time, because I thought we’ll do what is right for the country.”

He added that he believed the president would “reset the country” and bring together competent individuals to address the nation’s challenges.

Makinde added: “But unfortunately, that is not what we’re seeing. I regret that action. Yes, I do.”

He said for democracy to survive, PDP should be kept alive.

Makinde explained that Wike unilaterally promised President Tinubu to hold down the PDP without the consent of other party stakeholders.

He stressed: “I was in a meeting with the President and Wike and a few others, and Wike said to the President that I will hold PDP for you against 2027. So, we got up, and I asked Wike, did we agree to this?”

The governor said while Wike is entitled to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid, other PDP members also have the right to protect the PDP and oppose any move that could weaken democratic pluralism.

‘Why I declined offer to reorganise APC’

Makinde explained that he turned down the president’s request to organise Oyo APC  because of his allegiance to the PDP.

He recounted his discussion with the president on the cabinet composition and the upgrading of the Ibadan Airport.

Makinde recalled that President Tinubu had requested him to nominate somebody with a professional background for ministerial appointment from Oyo State.

He said: “When the president said we should nominate a person who will be a minister, I said, ‘Sir, what do you have for us? He said he wanted a developmental economist who can be a minister of budget and economic planning.”

Makinde said although he complied with the request by recommending a qualified candidate from the state, the outcome differed from what was initially discussed.

He stressed: “I sent someone who is from Oyo State, and somebody else was chosen. He was not taken to the budget and economic planning. He was made minister of power.”

Makinde recalled that the ministerial nomination was discussed again when he visited the president to seek his approval for the upgrade of the Ibadan airport to international standards.

He said: “Later, when I went to seek approval for the upgrade of Ibadan airport, he said he heard I was angry that my ministerial nominee was not chosen.”

The governor said that he had no resentment over the cabinet decision, emphasising that the prerogative of appointing ministers rests solely with him

He however, said the conversation took a new turn when it shifted to party organisation in Oyo State.

Makinde said he told the president that the Minister of Power could not be relied upon to strengthen the APC structure in the state because he does not have the capacity.

He added that President Tinubu then made a direct request to him instead.

Makinde said: “He said no, it’s me that he wants to help him organise APC in Oyo State.”

However, the governor said he immediately declined the request, citing party loyalty and his political principles.

He added: “I told him no: ‘I cannot help you because I am of the PDP.”

My grudge against Wike, by Oyo governor

Makinde explained that he parted ways with his political ally, Wike, because he aligned himself with President Tinubu to weaken the PDP, particularly in Oyo State, ahead of the 2027 poll.

Makinde threw a jibe at Wike’s antecedents as a man known only for his time in politics.

Tendering a certificate of $1milion contract he won,  he said he started making money at the multi-national level long before the minister started practising as a lawyer.

He recalled that at the age of 29, he was already earning millions of dollars in oil companies when Wike had just completed law school.

Makinde said: “Within one year, I made $1 million in my pocket. I was 29 in 1997. Wike, perhaps, at that time, had just left the law school, and his next job was as a local government chairman.”

    ‘PDP’s destruction dangerous’

Makinde warned that the plan to destroy the PDP could ultimately undermine democracy and erode multi-party system.

He urged democrats to resist any plot to impose a one-party system on the country.

The governor said he is eminently qualified to serve as president in 2027, if the opportunity comes his way.

He said his qualifications for the highest office were not in doubt, pointing to his record as governor of Oyo State.

Alluding to how President Tinubu got to office, he explained experience at the state level has  always historically prepared leaders for the presidency,

Makinde also highlighted his professional background outside politics, noting that he successfully ran a private company from 29 yeas of age.

He stressed: “I have heard that also, people saying, ‘Oh, is Seyi trying to position himself for the 2027 presidency?’

“Let me make this very clear: to serve this country at the highest level, I am qualified. I am even overqualified. I have run Oyo State. Even the current president, what brought him to the table? He was governor of Lagos State. By the end of May 2027, by God’s grace, God sparing my life, I would have completed two terms as governor of Oyo State. Professionally, I ran a company from a very young age, at 29,” he said.

Makinde also spoke about the legacy he would leave behind in Oyo State, saying that he hoped to be remembered for the institutions his government is building rather than for physical projects.

He said he his focusing on creating systems that will ensure good governance, sustainable development, and growth long after his tenure.

Makinde pointed out that infrastructure alone  does not guarantee a lasting legacy, unless projects are completed and embedded within strong institutions.

Citing the example of a major ring road, he noted that once such projects are completed, people often forget who initiated them, while unfinished projects tend to be remembered more vividly.

He added that his administration prioritises creating opportunities and a conducive environment for citizens to improve their lives, rather than relying on handouts.

On the Ibadan Circular Road project, Makinde defended his administration against allegations of land grabbing linked to the 500-metre corridor.

He explained that the land corridor was officially gazetted on November 19, 2018, months before he assumed office in May 2019.

He said the 110-kilometre circular road is designed to ease traffic flow around Ibadan and  prevent congestion.

The governor described the corridor as part of a modern motorway standard and a commercial corridor aimed at helping Oyo State to transit  from a consumptive to a productive economy.

On compensation, the governor said his administration is adopting a humane approach by offering payments to residents without formal land documentation, provided they can show proof of residence, to enable them to resettle elsewhere.

  • My grudge against Wike, by Makinde

My grudge against Wike, by Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday openly expressed concerns over his former political ally and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accusing him of actions capable of undermining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Makinde, who spoke during a live media chat held at the Presidential Lodge, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, said his political rift with Wike stemmed from the latter’s alleged promise to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 by “holding” the PDP for him—an arrangement he said he strongly opposed.

According to the governor, the issue became apparent during a meeting in Abuja involving President Tinubu, Wike, and other political actors, where he claimed to have confronted the FCT minister over the declaration.

“I was in a meeting with President Tinubu, Nyesom Wike, and others when Wike volunteered to hold the PDP for Tinubu ahead of 2027, and I was in shock. Wike can support the president in 2027, but I will not,” Makinde said.

The Nation reports that Makinde and Wike were both members of the defunct G5 group of aggrieved PDP governors, which emerged after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, despite calls for the presidency to be zoned to the South.

Makinde alleged that Wike’s alignment with President Tinubu was a calculated move aimed at weakening the PDP, particularly in Oyo State, ahead of the next general elections.

Speaking further, the Oyo governor took a swipe at Wike’s political background, contrasting it with his own professional career before venturing into politics.

Displaying a certificate linked to a $1 million contract, Makinde said he had achieved financial success at the multinational level long before Wike began his legal career.

“At the age of 29, in 1997, I had already made $1 million working with oil companies. At that time, Wike may have just finished law school, and his next job was as a local government chairman,” Makinde said.

He maintained that his stance was driven by principle, insisting that he would not be part of any arrangement that compromised the PDP’s independence ahead of the 2027 elections.

  • Let your voices be heard, Makinde charges Nigerians to rise for true federalism

Let your voices be heard, Makinde charges Nigerians to rise for true federalism

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state, has called on Nigerians to speak up in defence of true federalism, noting that the founding fathers, who negotiated Nigeria to be a federal system had foresight and that Nigerians should not allow the system to be derailed.

He stated this on Friday, at Re-Meritona Hotel, Abakaliki, venue of a birthday party and the public presentation of a book entitled ‘The Seyi Makinde Story: A Testament to Vision, Courage and Leadership’ authored by Ali Odefa.

Governor Makinde said he would consider it his biggest 58th birthday gift if Nigerians, especially the South-East, could speak up for true federalism and make sure their voices are heard.

According to the governor, the South-East must emulate Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, whose singular act of relinquishing the All People’s Party (APP) presidential ticket in 1999 changed the political landscape by ensuring that they contribute towards making the political environment competitive ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Governor Makinde, who noted that he chose to join politics years back to ensure that his voice is heard, said Nigerians can no longer afford to be bystanders, adding that they must make up their minds to participate in politics and ensure their voices are heard with regards to true federalism.

He said, “Well, let me start by saying compliments of the season to all of us, and to wish us a Merry Christmas and a happy, joyous, and rewarding year 2026 ahead of us.

“I want to say thank you for arranging this. When they brought the kolanut, they said I should accept it. And Ali whispered to me that this kolanut understands only one language, and that is Igbo language. And I tried to think in my head, you know, what language would I speak to this kola? But eventually, I spoke in Igbo.

“Kolanuts are actually grown in the western part of the country. But the people that eat kolanuts the most are in the northern part of the country. And that brings me to my only message for today.

“Nigeria was negotiated as a federation. The people that negotiated that federation called it Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is because of something like this. If you go to the North, you go to the West, you go to the East, different cultures, in fact, different nations. And they thought, okay, so how do you have unity in that diversity? And they negotiated federalism. And that is the most important issue that we are faced with as a country today.

“I’ll be 58 in about six days’ time. It would be a great birthday gift for me if quietly we make up our minds to participate and let our voices be heard in calling for true federalism for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I am in Igboland. You have shown love to me in this state and throughout Igboland, every time I go out, I am always dumbfounded with the kind of reception that I receive in the South-East.

“You have demonstrated that we can actually have that handshake across the Niger. My brother, former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, sent a representative. It is an indication of friendship and it is also an indication that the handshake is in the process of germinating and growing to an iroko status.”

Governor Makinde, who used the occasion to commend the Igbo people for the roles they have played in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy, pointed out how Chief Ogbonnaya Onu’s decision to let go of his presidential ticket in APP changed the political narrative in 1999, saying that the South-East must also ensure that the political environment becomes competitive ahead of the 2027 general election.

“At every turning point in Nigeria’s history, we have had the imprints of Igbo people. Cast your mind back at every point. I can only just go back to the recent turning points, because the democracy we are enjoying today started in 1999.

“In 1999, we were going to have a one-sided election because all the generals were on one side. The elite were all on one side. A single individual had drafted the constitution of all the three political parties. That was the environment we were in at that point. And there came a proud Igbo man, by the name of Ogbonnaya Onu, former governor of Abia State.

“He did something that made the political environment at that time become competitive. He gave up his presidential ticket. He was the presidential candidate of APP. He gave up that ticket so that there could be an alliance between APP and AD. They came together and they created a competitive political environment. Once he did that, nobody could predict the outcome of that 1999 election. The election actually went down to the wire.

“So, I am calling on my brothers and sisters, on this occasion of my 58th birthday, that you play the same role. Make our political environment competitive. I am not talking about A, B, C, D or E. No, I am talking about the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It is God that gives power.

“As humans, we may have ambitions, we may aspire, but God’s will always override individual’s will. So, my message is Igboland and Igbo people have a role to play to nudge Nigeria towards the path of true federalism. So, that is what I am going to leave you with.

“People have been talking about 2027, but we have one calendar year, 2026, ahead of us. Let us do our part, play our role.

“For me, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for the reception that I have received here.”

In her speech, the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Princess Patricia Onyemaechi Obila, said her boss asked her and other top government officials to attend to celebrate Governor Makinde on the occasion of his birthday and the book authored by an Ebonyi man.

She noted that the book on Governor Makinde contained a lot of experiences, adding that Makinde has a lot of admirers because he has been doing well in governance, especially in the areas of infrastructure development, education and other areas.

“You have many admirers out there because of the good jobs you are doing in Oyo State. In terms of infrastructure development, you are doing well. In terms of education and health, you are doing well.

“You are part of the governors we pray for everyday. If 80 per cent of governors are like you, Nigeria will be a better place. I always associate you with my boss, His Excellency, Rt Hon Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, who remains the best governor in this country.

“Today, we congratulate you and thank God for your life, because you have weathered a lot of storms, got a lot of experiences but you came, you saw, you touched and you conquered.

“So, on behalf of my boss, we say big congratulations to you.”

Earlier, the author of the book, Odefa said the book is, indeed a testament to the vision and courage of Governor Makinde, a man who has redefined leadership in the country.

He added that he authored the book as a mark of his appreciation to the Oyo State Governor and to immortalise him, just as he hailed his wife, Engr Mrs Tamunominini Makinde, for all she has done for him and his household.

The event had in attendance Wife of the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Mrs Makinde; Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Princess Patricia Onyemaechi Obila; Enugu State Deputy Governor, Barr Ifeanyi Ossai; Wife of a former Governor of Ebonyi State, Mrs Eunice Ukamaka Egwu; wife of the author, Chief (Mrs) Onyinyechi Ali Odefa; and Member representing Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency, Hon. Abass Adigun (Agboworin), among others.
