Monarch begs Makinde over withheld entitlements

The Aresaadu of Iresaadu in Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State, Oba Abraham Oyerinde, has sought the intervention of Governor Seyi Makinde over alleged injustice meted to him.

Oba Oyerinde lamented that despite the approval of his appointment and presentation of instrument of office on May 24, 2019, the ministry has refused to recognise him, and also denied him his entitlements.

His lawyer, Stephen Raji, urged Governor Makinde to constitute a committee to probe the matter before it gets out of hand.

According to him, there will be chaos and unrest in the community if the injustice is allowed to fester.

He added: “Recent events in Iresaadu have shown a disturbing issue that threatens the very fabric of justice and peace in the state. Despite the governor’s untiring efforts to uphold the rule of law and fairness in governance, matters of the traditional institution inclusive, it has become evident that certain individuals are working to subvert the noble efforts.

Hajj: be of good conduct, Makinde urges pilgrims

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has reiterated his vision to ensure that airlifting of pilgrims from Ibadan to Saudi Arabia for Hajj comes alive.

Makinde spoke yesterday during a farewell ceremony for the 2024 pilgrims. He admonished them to be good ambassadors and not be found wanting in anyway.

The governor said regulators have agreed to airlift pilgrims from Ibadan, but with the condition that there will be a stop-over in Lagos for necessary documentation and processes.

According to him, the arrangement does not align with his vision which also led to certain demands been placed on the state.

Part of the requirements, he explained, was the expansion of the runway, widening of the roads that lead to the airport and building of fuel depot for aircrafts to re-fuel. ‘The few things left would be completed in the next 18 months’, the governor promised.

He said: “The first time I came to Olodo, I told our pilgrims that before I leave government, they will airlift from Ibadan airport. Yes, we have been at it, we are trying. It’s been five years now. Part of the problem is that they agreed to airlift from Ibadan, but insisted they will have to stop over in Lagos for some documentation and processing, and I said that wasn’t my vision.”

Ex-Oyo Commissioner lauds Makinde’s road network initiative

A former Commissioner for Works and Transport in Oyo State, Prof. Abdulrahman Afonja (PARA), has commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his laudable initiative on road network in the State.

He stated that over 275km has been rehabilitated, reconstructed or constructed by the Governor.

Speaking during the three-day Harvest of IDEAS 24 summit organised by the Young Surveyors Network Oyo state branch, Afonja pointed out several roads have contributed to economic growth of the State, including the Iseyin-Ogbomoso road, the Ibadan-Iseyin road, the Moniya – Iseyin road, the Ido-Er”,wa road, the Oyo – Iseyin road, the Saki-Ogbooro-Igboho road and the circular road project.

He said these roads have contributed immensely to the economy of the State, describing it as a legacy someone like him would like to accomplish in future.

Speaking on the theme: “Beyond boundaries: Geospatial solutions for global challenges,” Afonja, who is the chairman of the occasion, noted the outstanding accomplishments of the current administration could not have been achieved without professional input of Oyo state surveyors.

He said: “Your profession is beyond surveying for roads and land projects. Your profession is vital and overlaps with many fields of study, from Engineering to Environmental to Buildings. An excellent example of your field’s contribution to humanity is using GIS. A Case study is the flooding issue in Oyo state.”

“It’s essential that Oyo state continuously identifies flood-prone areas using a GIS-based model to plan for disaster mitigation and preparedness using waterways.

“GIS is a tool to gather information, including hazard, vulnerability, financial losses, the risk of life, prevention, and control of dangerous floods.

“Frequency analysis of Gauge flow data at a given location or using an event-based rainfall run-off model using tools such as the rational or unit hydrograph method. The use of GIS tools for extrapolation is also a good example that speaks to the importance of your field.”

While encouraging young surveyors to keep contributing significantly to the State’s development, the Ogbomoso-born PDP chieftain stated that it is their responsibility as a professional group to speak out against any government projects that are wrong.

“As you are out there as professional, please make sure that you engage government and always give them feedback on whatever you feel is not right as well as providing the government necessary informations to further help the state.

“You must always remember that Oyo state is owned by all of us. And as such, it’s your duty to always support the Governor and make sure he succeed.

“I hope to have the opportunity to assist in the state’s development in the near future as well. Additionally, ensure that nothing is lagging behind but rather step up to continue on the Governor’s good path towards the development of the state,” Afonja added.

Highlights of the event include donation of N1m from Afonja to support the young surveyors and their conference.

Hajj: Makinde reiterates commitment to airlifting pilgrims from Ibadan

Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his vision to ensure that before his current administration ends, Muslim Pilgrims are airlifted from Ibadan to Saudi Arabia.

This is as he charged intending pilgrims from the state to be good ambassadors and not be found wanting in any way.

Makinde spoke on Wednesday, May 15, during a farewell ceremony for the 2024 intending Pilgrims to Saudi Arabia at an event held at the Exhibition Ground, BCOS, Orita Bashorun, Ibadan.

Speaking, Governor Makinde said that regulators have agreed to airlift Pilgrims from the state of Ibadan with the condition that the passengers will still have a stopover in Lagos for necessary documentation and processes.

He said the arrangement does not align with his vision which also led to certain demands being placed on the state.

He said part of the requirement was the expansion of the runway, widening of the roads that lead to the airport, and building of a fuel depot for aircraft to re-fuel, saying the few things left would be completed in the next 18 months.

Makinde said: “The first time I came to Olodo, I told our Pilgrims that before I leave government, they will airlift from Ibadan airport. Yes, we have been at it, we are trying. It’s been five years now, but part of the problem was that they agreed to airlift from Ibadan but insisted that they would have to stop by Lagos for some documentation and processing and I said that wasn’t my vision.

“My vision is that you will do all processes here in Ibadan, and as soon as you board here, you are heading straight to Saudi Arabia directly.

“All the things we are supposed to do, some of them, we are doing already. They asked us to widen the road that leads to the airport, we have done it. They asked us to create a point where planes can refuel, we have done it. The only thing left is that we should extend our runway by another 600 metres, we should install ILS and we should build another terminal where they can process passengers and we are on it. The target is within the next 18 months that also will be done.”

While charging the officials leading the trip to prioritise the welfare of the pilgrims, he charged the state pilgrims also to be good ambassadors and focus on the purpose of the religious activity.

He also said he remained undeterred by those criticizing him and claiming he’s not doing enough for Muslims in the state, noting that such people are only seeking attention and he won’t give them.

He said he is focused on ensuring that everyone gets their dues accordingly in the state irrespective of religion or any other bias.

“So, please, my people going on Hajj, I have one or two advice for you but before I give you, let me talk to the officials.

“The welfare of our people cannot be compromised, so you must look after every pilgrim from Oyo state.

“To the intending Pilgrims, I have three pieces of advice for you. You have to represent Oyo state well. You must be good ambassadors of Oyo State. Don’t collect any package from just anyone to be delivered to another person in Saudi Arabia, please don’t take such a package because there are many people out there. The person you don’t know, don’t let them send you any errands.

“Secondly, don’t get there and immediately start spending spree shopping. Finish up the main purpose which is religious and prayers, there will be days when you can go shopping.

“You must look after yourselves. Don’t say someone is from Oke Ogun and you don’t care about someone from Ibadan when you get to the Holy Land. Please, the prayer you are going there to offer, please pray for us, our government, yourselves, and your families and I know God will answer our prayers”, he added.

The governor also seized the opportunity to assure the residents that the government will soon complete work on the ongoing Olodo bridge, which he said was because the Hajj Camp, Olodo could not be used for the farewell ceremony.

“Some people are wondering why I am dressed in the same outfit as those going on Hajj, wondering if I am also going. Well, you know that for us in the Southwest, when people are celebrating, we always join and share in their celebration.

“I am so happy today and I heard all that the chairman of the Muslim Wing, Sheikh Atere said earlier. The only reason that we are here is that we were supposed to be at the Hajj Camp, Olodo but because we have demolished the Olodo bridge and ongoing work on the road.

“But, by the end of this week, one side of the road will be open for vehicular movement and before next year Hajj, the two sides will have been opened and the road from Iwo Road to Hajj camp, Olodo will be clear and we won’t be worried if any kind of holdup to get to the camp. So, this is a makeshift arrangement and that of next year would be better than this.”

Speaking earlier, the chairman of the Pilgrims Welfare Board, Muslim Wing, Sheikh Hashim Atere lauded the governor for supporting the vision to make the 2024 Hajj seamless.

He said: “This Board had secured a befitting accommodation very close to Haram for the pilgrims. I am delighted to inform Your Excellencies that local meals have been included in the menu list for our pilgrims. It is also worth mentioning that all arrangements have been made to make accommodation check-in easy for our pilgrims in Makkah.

“We have indicated their hotel and room number in each pilgrim’s identity card to be worn right from lbadan. This is an unprecedented treat in the history of this Board. All our pilgrims have been granted Haij Visas with no exception. It is to be noted that Oyo State is the first State in the Southwest and the second State in the country, to have all pilgrims in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia within the first week of the commencement airlifting for Hajj.”

In their various goodwill messages, the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abdulganiy Agbotomokekere, Professor K. K. Olosho, Chief Adebayo Oyero, and other Muslim leaders from other parts of the state including the League of Imams and Alfas in attendance lauded Makinde for his unprecedented commitments towards the welfare and well-being of Muslim community in the state.

Orisunmibare community begs Makinde on dilapidated schools, deplorable roads

Residents of Orisunmibare Community in Oluyole Local Government (ward 10) of Ibadan, Oyo State have appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to address decay in school and road infrastructure in the community.

Orisunmibare Development Forum (ODF) implored immediate action on deplorable roads and dilapidated schools infrastructure in the area

Orisunmibare, home to the oldest primary school in the community, Ebenezer Primary School, has seen its educational infrastructure crumbled, with two classroom blocks completely destroyed and the remaining one in dire condition, leaving over 120 pupils in a precarious learning environment.

The group pointed out another school in the community, Orisunmibare Community Grammar School, located at Pako village, faces challenges, with only one block of six classrooms and no library or laboratory facilities, and low number of teachers raising concerns about the quality of education for its students.

The forum’s Coordinator, Ayo Akinyemi, pointed out that poor condition of the roads in the community further exacerbates the problem, making it difficult for both students and teachers to access the schools.

In a urgent call to action addressed to Governor Makinde, the group appealed for the prioritisation of Orisunmibare’s critical needs, emphasising the importance of allocating funds to repair and maintain the community’s deteriorating roads and educational facilities.

The OCDF emphasised that these issues not only affect the students’ ability to learn but also posed safety risks to residents.

The Coordinator  said: “I am writing to express my profound concern regarding the dire state of two public schools in the Orisunmibare community; Ebenezer Primary School and Orisunmibare

    Community High School.

“This historic school, Ebenezer Primary School, established as the first in the community, currently faces critical disrepair. With only one building remaining functional, the educational environment falls short of the standards necessary for proper student development.

“This condition poses a significant threat to the well-being and learning potential of future generations entrusted to this institution.”

“Similarly, Orisunmibare Community High School, located at Pako village within the community, despite being established over 25 years ago, remains severely limited in its capacity. The entire student body currently shares a single building.”

“This lack of adequate space hinders the school’s ability to provide a comprehensive and effective education. The aforementioned conditions

are unacceptable and demand immediate attention. We, the Orisunmibare community, strongly urge your administration to allocate the necessary resources to address these critical issues,” he pleaded.

Akinyemi noted that Orisunmibare community has consistently demonstrated unwavering support for the government by hosting the Senator Rashidi Ladoja GRA project, adding: “We firmly believe that quality education serves as the cornerstone of our community’s development and the state as a whole.

“We implore you to prioritise the education of our children by taking decisive action to address the dire situation of these schools,” he said.

Akinyemi further noted the dilapidated roads of Orisunbare has been a plight well-known to the community’s residents, which he said, have long been in desperate need of repair and maintenance.

He stated that years of neglect have transformed what was once a functional network of transportation into a hazardous patchwork of potholes, erosion and crumbling infrastructure.

The forum’s Coordinator maintained that as a result, the community’s ability to thrive has been severely hampered, with the sorry state of the roads impacting access to vital services, such as healthcare and education.

  • We will leave behind legacy of strong institutions, not strong politicians – Makinde

We will leave behind legacy of strong institutions, not strong politicians – Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has said he is working towards leaving behind the creation of institutions that will ensure that the state continues well into the future.

Noting that his administration has successfully created strong institutions that will stand the test of time and make the state thrive across different sectors, the governor said states do not need strong governors or administrators but strong institutions that can make them do well and add value in all ramifications.

He spoke on Thursday, when he signed the Oyo State Project Monitoring Agency Bill (2024) into Law, at the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

He stated that though his administration met a Bureau of Public Procurement and Governor’s Monitoring Team on the ground when it came on board in 2019; there was no value for money paid on projects.

Makinde said: “People ask me what will be my legacy? Our legacy will be the institutions that we are able to create to ensure that Oyo State will continue well into the future to enjoy good governance.

“We do not want strong men or strong governors but strong institutions that will stand the test of time. So, this is one of the institutions that are being created.

“We must extract value for the people of the state. So, this is one institution that will ensure that values are extracted for our projects in terms of schedule and quality.”

The governor lauded the House of Assembly for demonstrating togetherness and working hand in hand with the executive to ensure that the people of the state have value for their money.

“Let me use this opportunity to say thank you to the House. It is a demonstration of the togetherness between the legislature and executive arms of government. This is Oyo State and this is how we will continue to operate,” he added.

Speaking earlier, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Adebo Ogundoyin, said the House was excited about the Bill, stating that the Assembly is confident that the agency will work in partnership with the Assembly, as project monitoring is part of the lawmakers’ oversight functions.

He commended Governor Makinde on the new agency, which he described as an extra layer of protection to ensure that projects are delivered to time and with utmost quality.

The Speaker said: “We, as a House, are excited about this. The only thing we are concerned about is whether this agency will be usurping the function of the House but knowing the kind of government we run and the partnership we have, we believe that we will work hand in hand, especially with the Chairman of the Committee, as long as the directive of His Excellency is clear.

“We look forward to working together in a way that will not usurp the duty of each other. I am sure that this is an extra layer of protection for the contracts awarded and we are working on the same page to ensure that quality projects are delivered in good time.

Oyo lawmaker to Makinde: construct speed-breakers on renovated Asunle, Arapaja, Odo-Ona Kekere road

Following the reconstruction of Asunle, Arapaja, Odo-Ona Kekere road in Ibadan, a member representing Oluyole state constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Waheed Akintayo (Ilumoka) has appealed to the state government to construct speed breakers at some of the flashpoints on the said road.

Akintayo appealed on Tuesday, May 8, while presenting a motion on the floor of the house on the need to appreciate Governor Seyi Makinde for fulfilling his promise to renovate the road.

He said Governor Makinde had again demonstrated that he is a listening leader who will always address the demands and problems of the people.

He said: “I want to appreciate our people-loving governor for approving the reconstruction of Asunle, Arapaja, Odo-Ona Kekere road. This has put an end to the suffering experienced by commuters and residents on the road.

Akintayo Ilumoka said: “They had been neglected by successive governments in Oyo state. However, since the completion of reconstruction work on the road, it has been observed that some recalcitrant drivers, motorcyclists and tricyclists especially the commercial ones now drive recklessly on the road, hence there’s an urgent need for the state government through the Ministry of Local Governments and Chieftaincy Matters to take necessary action to construct speed breakers at flashpoints like LGA Health Centre close to Arapaja, Arapaja village electric transformer, Abamba/Aboke junction, Community Health Centre Odo Okun, Odo Okun Eid Praying ground, Laanisa junction, and Ilu Tuntun junction. This is to prevent the occurrence of road carnage.”
