The Speaker stressed the need for the committees to get necessary briefs on the request and report to the House in one week.

“Having N150,000 billion for Ibadan Circular Road and other infrastructure is a good idea, but we have to consider the payback mechanism. I mean the payment procedure. We also want the two committees to get necessary details about the proposed loan.

“The Minister intervened on Monday, at the state secretariat during a working visit to the state Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde earlier today.

“This came as the former ALGON Chairman was on the entourage of the Minister who was on a working visit to the state.

“Earlier on, the governor jokingly threw banter immediately, he sighted Aleshinloye, who was seated in one corner of the Executive Chamber during the courtesy visit when he jokingly said I can see Aleshinloye in this office that he did not follow the Minister on the working visit but he only came here to remind me of their money. The banter sent everyone laughing.”

Governor Seyi Makinde never faulted or accused President Bola Tinubu of subsidy removal or its timing contrary to the claims of the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Chief Press Secretary to Oyo State Governor, Sulaimon Olanrewaju has said.

Olanrewaju explained that Makinde only made reference to the effects of the fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians, noting that it was clear that the APC in the state was on an attention-seeking voyage.

He however added that, the governor, while not faulting the policy or the timing, noted the undeniable fact that the policy has had a telling effect on the populace.

    • Pay us through our lawyer – Council chairs

Sacked Chairmen and Councillors in Oyo state under the aegis of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) have accused Governor Seyi Makinde of playing antics with the payment of their entitlements as ordered by the Supreme Court.

Speaking through its Chairman, Prince Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, the ex-council bosses who operate under the name Forum 68 said it was surprised that the state government could be pretending that it has no record of the judgment creditors, who got a favourable judgment from the Supreme Court on May 7th, 2021, after Governor Makinde illegally and arbitrarily sent them packing from offices.

The statement reads in part: “It has come to the knowledge of “Forum 68” (ex ALGON, Oyo state), that Oyo state government is pretending that it has no record again of the judgment creditors, i.e elected Chairmen and Councillors who got a favourable judgment from the Supreme Court on May 7th, 2021, after Governo Seyi Makinde illegally and arbitrarily sent us packing from office.

“It will be recalled that the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court ordered the governor to pay our salaries and allowances, and he got a fine for his action by consciously breaching the nation’s constitution.

“After much delay and deliberate disobedience of the Supreme Court judgment, Governor Seyi Makinde paid a tranche of the judgment debt of N1,5 billion out of N4,874,889,425.60.

“The state government made a promise to pay the balance of the judgment debt within six months as stated by the then honourable Attorney General of the state in his letter dated 13/12/2021.

“The state governor failed to pay and started playing hanky panky by rushing to a High Court to technically appeal against the Supreme Court judgment that he would not pay as expressly stated by the Supreme Court in a judgment written in simple, unambiguous english language.

“The antic of such absurd legal rigmarole at a huge cost to the state is to deny or delay payment of our money ordered to be paid by the Supreme Court.”

    • Governor vows to punish lawbreakers

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has said 2024 is a year of rule of law.

The governor, who noted that he would not speak negatively in the new year, said those who do no evil has nothing to be afraid of, but that he will only punish lawbreakers and reward accordingly those who strive to lift the state.

He spoke in a remark at the annual Inter-faith Service for civil servants.

The event, organised by the state government, was attended by members of the state executive council, top government functionaries, labour leaders, civil servants, religious leaders among others.

Makinde said three of the major projects embarked upon by the administration would come to fruition in 2024, harping on the need for the residents to have a positive attitude, maintain law and order so as to show to investors, the state’s readiness as an investment destination.

He said: “Year 2024 will be a year of great turnaround for Oyo State. Three of the projects we are doing will start coming into fruition.

“Let me also say, all we are doing are  ingredients for our state to be prosperous, but the real thing that will make our state prosperous is our attitude to ensure our environment is orderly.

“We have seen several people killed because someone was driving against traffic. So I solicit your support, 2024 is a year of rule of law in Oyo State. We dare to be different from others.”

“Some of us have lost our sense of good and bad. People driving against traffic, me as the governor I will stop them and tell them the implication as many of them seem not to know.

“Our road median are dumbsite and we want investors to come, we want people to come and invest in Oyo state. Land grabbers, those are the challenges. People believe Ibadan must be ruled by ironnfist, but Oyo state is not only about Ibadan, there are other regions who don’t share the same belief.

“But, we must work together, there must be order, sanity within our environment and that is the only time we will standout as serious investment destination.

“In the scale, Lagos is about 120km away and the monthly IGR is over N60billion, our own IGR is between N3.5bn to N3.7bn monthly. What do they have in Lagos that God has not given us in Oyo state, so, please we have to work together to ensure that we create a serious state.

“So, on that note, be positive about our state. I will not say anything negative in this 2024, I’ll be positive but I will punish the lawbreakers. If you don’t break the law, you don’t have anything to worry about. And I will do good to everybody that is striving to lift this state up.”

The governor further charged the people of the state to hold him accountable on the management of the state commonwealth in the new year.

He said all the achievements he has been able to make in the almost five years of his administration has been a product of support and encouragement of the workers, labour leaders and some key individuals

“I like to say that, if we say this administration achieve anything, it is due to the support and contribution of all of you. Seyi Makinde cannot single handedly do anything without the support amd back up of many of you. I want to thank all of you including the labour leaders.

“No one is perfect, the fact that we disagree, it is normal in any human endeavours because there is no way we will work together without disagreement, but all we disagree to agree on is what is paramount. We put the interest of the state ahead of all other interest, even ahead of your own personal interest. We sat down and we spoke and you said there was pressure on you and there was pressure on me too.

“But, we both agreed that government will come and go, but our state will always be there. My mother was a telephone operator in this Secretariat, so I was a child of a civil servant. So, if you are saying Seyi Makinde paid wage award, he paid 13th month, it is not Seyi Makinde’s personal money, it is our commonwealth.

“Please in this new year, hold us accountable. If it is the money that my biological father left in a bank, I can spend it anyhow. But, because it is our commonwealth and because, just like I said earlier, government is a continuum, we that we are here today, we can’t get it a hundred percent right.

“There use to be some government, those good things they did that we saw were good, we will build on it, and we are building on it. So, if you see that we approve something, that, you think something is wrong somewhere, please call our attention to it”, he added.

Makinde also at the event solicited for the support of the workers, labour leaders among other stakeholders noting that there lies ahead a big challenge that will require the collective support of everyone.

He assured that his administration will be willing to go back to the negotiation table with labour leaders on the minimum wage saying the current N30, 000 payable is nothing in the fave of current economic reality.

  • Oyo says Accountant-General didn’t contradict Makinde on payment to ex-LG chairmen

Oyo says Accountant-General didn’t contradict Makinde on payment to ex-LG chairmen

Oyo government has said that the Accountant-General of the state, Mrs Kikelomo Adegoke, did not contradict the position of Governor Seyi Makinde on the payment of judgment debt to former local government chairmen and councilors.

Reports in a section of the media had twisted the contents of a letter sent to some banks by the Accountant-General, claiming that she contradicted the governor’s stance that the state had no money to defray the judgment debt.

However, the state government clarified that the letter, which was sent to the banks in respect of the garnishee order placed on the state’s account in 10 commercial banks by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in December 2023, was consistent with Governor Makinde’s position.

The state government said: “In the letter, the Accountant-General informed the affected banks that the Oyo State Joint Local Government Allocation Account domiciled with First Bank of Nigeria, had already been put on lien to the tune of N3,425,300,000, being the total amount of the judgment debt.

“Having adequately provisioned for the debt, it is therefore both unconscionable and inequitable for nine other banks to do the same in the circumstances.

“This is in fact, consistent with Governor Makinde’s position.

“While speaking on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) on 23 December 2023, Makinde said although the state had already made provision for the judgment debt, the money would not be paid until the Supreme Court responded on the clarification, which the Oyo State Government had sought from the apex court.

“It is unfortunate that some misguided individuals intent on creating an imaginary division within the Oyo state government have coloured the contents of the letter to make it seem like Makinde lied.”

It added that the governor has neither said the state will not pay the debt nor that the state had no money to pay, but that the process of the law would be followed to a logical conclusion to avoid paying Oyo state’s money to the wrong people.

“For the avoidance of doubts, Governor Makinde has not said that the state will not pay the judgment debt nor did he say the state does not have the funds to pay.

“Rather, the position of the governor is that the whole process of the law must be pursued to a logical conclusion before the money is paid to avoid the state’s fund getting into the wrong hands.”
