Premier League defending champions Manchester City will host Chelsea today  in the marquee match of Matchday 23 of the 2024/25 season.

Dubbed the ‘Battle of the Money Bags’, this encounter features former Manchester City assistant manager Enzo Maresca squaring off against his former mentor, Pep Guardiola, for the second time this season. The reverse fixture earlier in the campaign ended in a 2-0 victory for the Citizens.

Fresh off a dominant 6-0 win over Ipswich last weekend, Guardiola’s team, currently fifth in the league standings, will aim to leapfrog Chelsea with a win. Fans can stream the highly anticipated showdown live with a Showmax Premier League mobile plan at 6:30 PM on Saturday.

The Citizens are bolstered by the return of key players John Stones, Nathan Aké, Kevin De Bruyne, and Mateo Kovačić, as they look to close the gap at the top of the table. Meanwhile, Chelsea, who held City to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad last season, will be determined to maintain their position in the top four.

Also today, league leaders Liverpool will host Ipswich at Anfield in one of the 4:00 PM kickoffs. Arne Slot’s men remain six points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who will simultaneously face Wolverhampton Wanderers. Brighton takes on Everton at the Amex, while third-placed Nottingham Forest welcomes Bournemouth.

  • Man City overhaul begins in earnest – Guardiola

Man City overhaul begins in earnest – Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has admitted Manchester City’s injury woes and dismal form this season forced the club to start an overhaul of his squad sooner than expected.

After winning the Premier League six times in the past seven seasons, City’s bid for a fifth successive title has crumbled in shocking fashion.

Instead of chasing yet more glory in the title race, Guardiola’s side will host Chelsea today locked in a desperate battle just to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

City’s astonishing decline has prompted Guardiola and the club’s hierarchy to launch a comprehensive rebuild of his team in a bid to get back on track.

Normally cautious spenders in the January transfer window, City have signed Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens, teenaged Brazilian defender Vitor Reis from Palmeiras and Egypt forward Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt.

That trio cost around £123 million ($152 million) in combined transfer fees and opened the door for unsettled City right-back Kyle Walker’s imminent loan move to AC Milan.

“Last season, we didn’t do much (in the transfer market) with the exceptional qualities of this team,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday.

“Normally we would wait three of four months, but we decided to do it here with the amount of injuries and problems we have.”

  • ETIHAD QUAKES: Man City begin quest for top four against  resurgent Chelsea

ETIHAD QUAKES: Man City begin quest for top four against  resurgent Chelsea

Now prioritising a top-four finish in the Premier League after seeing their title aspirations quashed earlier in the campaign, Manchester City and Chelsea do battle at the Etihad Stadium this evening.

The two teams lock horns for the first time since the opening day of the season in August last year when the Citizens secured a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Just when it looked like Man City were beginning to turn a corner, scoring 23 goals and conceding only four during a six-game unbeaten run, Pep Guardiola’s side came crashing back down to earth with a disappointing 4-2 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Despite boasting a two-goal lead early in the second half, the Citizens capitulated – not for the first time this season – and conceded three goals in 22 minutes before Goncalo Ramos added a fourth for PSG in added time, leaving Man City deflated and now in serious danger of failing to qualify for the knockout rounds.

Sitting 25th  in the Champions League standings and needing a win from their final match with Club Brugge next week to secure a last-16 playoff spot, Man City have now failed to win nine games across all competitions in which they were ahead – the most of any Premier League club this season.

Guardiola and co must dust themselves down quickly as they prepare for a challenging run of Premier League fixtures against Chelsea, Arsenal, Newcastle United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest – a run that may define their season as they pursue a top-four finish.

Man City have lost each of their last three Premier League games played immediately after a European midweek match, but they are unbeaten in their last seven top-flight encounters with  today’s opponents Chelsea (W5 D2).

After enduring a blip in form either side of the New Year (D2 L2), Chelsea have since won two and drawn one of their last three fixtures in all competitions, picking up four points across their last two Premier League home games against Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The West Londoners salvaged a point at the death in a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, before beating Wolves 3-1 on Monday. Goals from Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke helped Chelsea end a five-match winless run in the Premier League and seal their 11th top-flight success of the campaign.

Although he felt that Chelsea “could have scored more” against Wolves, head coach Enzo Maresca is pleased to have seen his side climb back into the top four, two points ahead of Saturday’s opponents Man City in fifth whom they have struggled against in recent years.

Indeed, Chelsea have failed to win any of their last 10 meetings with the Citizens across all competitions (D2 L8) since beating Guardiola’s side 1-0 in the 2021 Champions League final, three weeks after they claimed their last Premier League win over Man City (2-1) at the Etihad.

Chelsea have actually collected more points away from home (21) than at Stamford Bridge (19) so far this season, but they head to the Etihad this weekend without a win in their last three games on the road (D2 L1), while they have kept just one clean sheet in their last 16 PL away matches against Man City and have failed to score on seven occasions during this run.

EPL: Haaland scores twice as Man City thrash West Ham

Erling Haaland scored twice in the Premier League for the first time in over three months as Manchester City hammered West Ham to equal their biggest win of the season.

Haaland followed up his header late in the first half by calmly chipping over advancing West Ham keeper Alphonse Areola after running on to a through ball from Savinho.

Savinho was arguably City’s best player. It was the Brazilian who forced their 10th-minute opener with a left-wing cross that deflected off Vladimir Coufal and left Areola stranded.

Phil Foden added a fourth, tapping home only his second league goal of the season after Kevin de Bruyne unselfishly set him up rather than attempting to mark his 400th City appearance in style.

West Ham did pull one back when Niclas Fullkrug turned home skipper Tomas Soucek’s cross 19 minutes from time but Crysencio Summerville wasted their best chance after that when he was off target with the goal at his mercy.

It was the first time City have won successive games since October and will at least allow manager Pep Guardiola to feel a corner is starting to be turned after the horror run that has led to the club’s Treble-winning boss questioning himself in a way scarcely imaginable for most of his nine-year reign.

In contrast, West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui remains under intense pressure. This defeat was not on the same scale as the five-goal home loss to Liverpool in the Hammers’ last game.

But David Moyes’ presence in the stands was a reminder the east London outfit have not made the progress anticipated when the Scot left at the end of last season – and Lopetegui could yet pay the price for that.

  • EPL: Man City come back twice to draw at Crystal Palace

EPL: Man City come back twice to draw at Crystal Palace

Manchester City twice came from behind to draw with Crystal Palace as the champions’ underwhelming run of form continued.

City’s win over Nottingham Forest in midweek failed to herald the start of them rediscovering their form – and Palace may consider themselves unlucky not to have won this.

Oliver Glasner’s side led after just four minutes when Will Hughes picked out wing-back Daniel Munoz in tonnes of space to drive in the opening goal.

They had chances to extend their lead before Erling Haaland leaped well to head in Matheus Nunes’ cross to level.

But another defender put Palace ahead with Hughes’ corner being headed in by Maxence Lacroix.

However, City salvaged a Selhurst Park point when Bernardo Silva found Rico Lewis, who fired a fine effort into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Lewis was later sent off for two bookings, the second for a foul on Trevoh Chalobah.

City are eight points behind leaders Liverpool, having played a game more than Arne Slot’s side, while Palace are four points above the relegation zone.

BATTLE OF GIANTS: Struggling Man City face red-hot Liverpool at Anfield

The stumbling champions meet the scintillating challengers in Sunday’s Premier League headline act, as Liverpool and Manchester City engage in a battle of the behemoths at Anfield.

Victory for Arne Slot’s side would see them increase their already unassailable lead over the Citizens in the top-flight table to 11 points, potentially extinguishing the visitors’ hopes of a fabulous five-peat with just a third of the season gone.

Warming up for the visit of the English champions by conquering the European champions, Liverpool ended their Real Madrid hoodoo in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, where the collector’s item of a missed Mohamed Salah penalty proved inconsequential.

Alexis Mac Allister’s slick finish, Cody Gakpo’s well-placed header and Caoimhin Kelleher’s sensational stop from Kylian Mbappe’s own unsuccessful spot kick prolonged Liverpool’s 100% start to the 2024-25 competition, meaning that Slot’s crop remains on top of the country and the continent.

A routine beating of the 15-time European champions succeeded a gargantuan effort in last weekend’s top-vs.-bottom battle at Southampton, who threatened to hand Slot his first away defeat as Liverpool boss before South Coast saviour Salah arrived with a pivotal second-half brace.

Safe in the knowledge that they will retain an insurmountable lead at the summit no matter what transpires on Sunday, Liverpool host the champions on a six-game winning run across all competitions, scoring multiple goals in all of those successes and keeping clean sheets in their last three Anfield affairs versus Real Madrid, Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen.

Already joining Carlo Ancelotti and Guus Hiddink in the exclusive club of Premier League managers to win 10 of their first 12 games, Slot now endeavours to continue a positive Liverpool trend; none of the Reds’ last six bosses has lost their first Premier League match against the reigning champions of England.

As Slot masterminded a triumph over the Champions League holders with his current club, the Dutchman’ former employers Feyenoord were ostensibly resigned to a heavy beating at the hands of a rejuvenated Man City, who had three goals to their name by the 53rd minute.

However, the unpredicted plight of Guardiola’s men arguably hit its lowest ebb yet, as they became the first team ever in the Champions League to blow a three-goal lead in the final 15 minutes, where Slovakian defender David Hancko completed a monstrous comeback for the Rotterdam giants.

Entering the press conference room with a cut on nose and visible scratches on his head, Guardiola – who quickly had to clarify comments he made about wishing to harm himself – oversaw a sixth straight game without victory for the crumbling champions, who have not triumphed in any tournament since late October.

Last weekend’s embarrassing 4-0 home loss to Tottenham Hotspur means that the Citizens are at risk of being expelled from the top four entirely this weekend – Arsenal, Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion are all just one point worse off at the time of writing – and each of City’s last four matches on the road has ended in defeat.

If there is any shred of comfort for the Sky Blues faithful, it is their side’s outstanding attacking record on rival turf; Guardiola’s men have scored in 26 consecutive matches away from home, last being shut out on the road by Aston Villa nearly exactly 12 months ago.

Man City have also strung together a four-match unbeaten sequence versus Liverpool since last going down at Anfield in October 2022, with both meetings in Jurgen Klopp’s farewell campaign ending 1-1. However, Guardiola’s 27% win rate (6/22) against the Reds is his worst percentage versus any team he has taken on at least five times as a manager – yet another bad omen for a crestfallen Citizens contingent.

  • ‘I will be here’ – Guardiola’s relegation promise to Man City

‘I will be here’ – Guardiola’s relegation promise to Man City

Pep Guardiola says he will stand by Manchester City even if they are relegated over alleged breaches of financial rules – and claimed “75%” of rival clubs want to see them go down.

Guardiola has signed a two-year contract extension that would keep him at City until 2027.

The 53-year-old has committed his future to the club even though no decision is expected around the 115 Premier League charges City are facing until early next year.

City deny any wrongdoing but sanctions in the event of a guilty verdict could range from a huge fine to points deductions or even relegation.

Guardiola said 12 months ago he would manage them in League One if he had to.

He repeated the sentiment on Friday before the Premier League encounter with Tottenham.

“I said that six months ago. You have my interviews,” he said.

“I said when all the clubs accused us of doing something wrong and people say ‘what happens if we are relegated?’ I will be here.

“I don’t know the position they are going to bring us, the Conference? [But] next year we will come up and come up and come back to the Premier League.

“I knew it then, I feel it now.”

However, Guardiola said the issue was not in his thoughts when he decided to extend his stay, and repairing the damage of four straight defeats for the first time in his managerial career was more pressing.

“I read something about the situation and how you need to be relegated immediately,” he added.

“Seventy-five per cent of the clubs want it, because I know what they do behind the scenes and this sort of stuff. But I don’t live with it, I live with the four defeats, what I have to do. There are lawyers on both sides. I don’t think about it.”

  • EPL: Faltering Man City, Arsenal face tough weekend

EPL: Faltering Man City, Arsenal face tough weekend

Manchester City and Arsenal have led the way in the last two Premier League title races but both teams have hit a slump heading into the weekend when their squad depth will be put to the test as they aim to reel in leaders Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have looked flat in recent outings and two straight 1-0 losses away at Newcastle United and Inter Milan have left the club fifth in the Premier League and 12th  in the Champions League respectively.

Although they will be glad to see their influential skipper Martin Odegaard finally back in the fray after being injured in August, questions remain about whether he can start or even play 90 minutes in Sunday’s London derby at Chelsea.

Without Odegaard, Arsenal have struggled to create chances through the middle while the Norwegian’s eye for goal has also been sorely missed by an attack that has looked sterile in recent matches.

With Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus misfiring, the burden to provide the magic touch has fallen on 23-year-old Bukayo Saka but he cannot do it all alone.

Arsenal have lost three of their last six games in all competitions – as many defeats as in their previous 32 matches.

Injuries to Declan Rice and Kai Havertz are also concerns while Arteta did not rotate his squad, playing near-identical line-ups in both games which see tired legs at Stamford Bridge where Raheem Sterling cannot play against his parent club.

Arteta has attempted to energise his players in the wake of Wednesday’s controversial loss at the San Siro.

“The performance, the attitude, the dominance that we showed against one of the best teams in Europe in this stadium – I haven’t seen it in all the other games that I’ve watched,” he said.

“If we play the way we played, we’ll have a big chance to win against Chelsea.”

Champions Manchester City, who face a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, have been counting the cost of injuries and, after some heavy rotation, Pep Guardiola’s side have lost their last three games in three different competitions.

Tuesday’s 4-1 mauling at Sporting in the Champions League will sting, all the more so because the Portuguese side’s manager Ruben Amorim is moving to City’s rivals Manchester United later this month.

  • Mendy entitled to majority of unpaid Man City wages

Mendy entitled to majority of unpaid Man City wages

Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy is entitled to “the majority of his unpaid salary” from the Premier League club, a judge has ruled.

The France international, who was charged with rape and sexual assault in August 2021, took City to an employment tribunal to claim about £11m before tax in unpaid wages after he was suspended without pay from September 2021 until he left the club in June 2023.

Last year Mendy was cleared of a series of rape and attempted rape charges.

Judge Joanne Dunlop ruled that City were entitled to withhold Mendy’s salary for the periods he was in custody, which amounted to about five of the 22 months he was not paid.

In a statement on social media, Mendy said: “I am delighted with the decision and sincerely hope that the club will now do the honourable thing and pay the outstanding amounts, as well as the other amounts promised to me under the contract, without further delay, so I can finally put this difficult part of my life behind me.”

A Football Association suspension meant Mendy, who was on a basic salary of £6m a year, was unable to fulfil his contractual obligations when not in custody.

Judge Dunlop said: “I found that Mr Mendy was ‘ready and willing’ to work during the non-custody periods, and was prevented from doing so by impediments (the FA suspension and bail conditions) which were unavoidable or involuntary on his part.”

She said the amount Mendy will receive will be calculated between the two parties or at a future hearing if they cannot agree.

    City have declined to comment.

Mendy was remanded in custody for five months before being released on bail in January 2022. The case went to trial for the first time in August 2022.

In January 2023 Mendy was cleared of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

He was then cleared of raping a woman and attempting to rape another in July 2023 at a retrial.

Mendy, who left City when his contract expired, now plays for French side Lorient.

In the submissions detailed in the judgement, Mendy’s lawyer argued that City had “a binary choice – to follow the dismissal procedure (which would, if a dismissal resulted, have freed Mr Mendy to contract with another club) or to keep him under contract and continue paying him”.

The hearing was told how on 15 occasions Mendy held or attended parties in breach of Covid-19 regulations or bail conditions, or both.

City’s lawyers argued that the suspension, being in custody and his bail terms “clearly amounted to a full impediment to Mr Mendy being able to perform his contract” and that the impediments were a result of his “culpable behaviour”.

The judgement read: “Mr Mendy’s position is that he is an innocent man whose career has been ruined, and life blighted, by false sexual allegations and that the football club which brought him to this country effectively abandoned him in his hour of need.

“Manchester City’s position is that Mr Mendy largely brought his troubles upon himself and ignored sensible advice and warning after warning in his self-destructive pursuit of his chosen lifestyle.

“Both these narratives have validity, and there is no one cause of the chain of events which unfolded in this case.

“The question of whether Mr Mendy deserves to be paid, however, is one for the commentators and comments sections. The only question for me is whether Manchester City was legally entitled to withhold that pay.”

Mendy’s legal team said City’s then chief football operations officer Omar Berrada had said he would be paid his salary if found not guilty.

Berrada denied the claim and Judge Dunlop said any “assurances about backpay” were “irrelevant”.

Mendy, who joined City from Monaco in a £52m deal in 2017, won the Premier League in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

His final appearance for City was on 15 August 2021.

  • Guardiola won’t stop defending Man City amid financial probe

Guardiola won’t stop defending Man City amid financial probe

Pep Guardiola insists he will always defend Manchester City from accusations of financial misconduct because of his trust in the club’s owners and his love affair with their fans.

City are fighting 115 charges relating to alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules in an ongoing hearing that has been labelled sport’s “trial of the century”.

The English champions deny any wrongdoing, claiming they have a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” to clear their name as they battle to avoid a potential points deduction or even expulsion from the Premier League.

A verdict from the independent commission is not expected until 2025, but Guardiola is repeatedly asked awkward questions about the case.

It is a challenge the 53-year-old is happy to handle because of his belief in City’s Abu Dhabi-based owners and an unbreakable bond with the club he joined in 2016.

“I’m part of this club, deep inside of my bones. I am the manager, the person at the club who talks more through all the media, to send messages to fans,” Guardiola told reporters. “And, of course I am going to defend my club, I trust them, the owner, the chairman, the CEO, and all the people working here, for many, many years.

“I know them quite well, much more than any of you. Of course there are situations in the eight and nine years, some of them expected, some of them more tough to deal with. No complaints. You do what you have to do.”

Guardiola’s rapport with City fans has become mutual during a golden era featuring six Premier League titles, the club’s maiden Champions League crown and numerous other trophies.

As well as the silverware, Guardiola’s steadfast defence of the club’s reputation has struck a chord with supporters.

One group of City fans have paid for a banner, with a message in Catalan asking Guardiola to extend his stay at the club, that will be unveiled during Saturday’s home game against Fulham.
