Man Utd get boost inhunt for Botafogo keeper

Manchester United have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Botafogo keeper John Victor after Andre Onana suffered an injury ahead of pre-season.

Botafogo are preparing for the possible departure of John Victor, who has received an offer from Manchester United in light of Onana’s injury, who suffered a hamstring injury and will miss the pre-season. Botafogo have made enquiries about the situation of Matheus Mendes, who belongs to Atletico Mineiro and is on loan to America-MG, as GOAL Brazil has learned.

Onana reported for pre-season training at Carrington earlier this week, but unfortunately suffered a hamstring injury during one of the training sessions. Subsequently, he is set to miss at least six to eight weeks on the sidelines, which means head coach Ruben Amorim will not have the Cameroonian for the Red Devils’ opening game of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

Botafogo, as such, have been searching for a goalkeeper since learning of the possible departure of Victor, who is being targeted by United to compensate for Onana’s absence. United would be willing to pay the player’s release clause to take him from General Severiano in the transfer market — the contract stipulates a payment of £6 million ($8m) for the sale of the 29-year-old goalkeeper.

Man Utd want to sign ‘world-class’ £85m Star

Manchester United are showing interest in a summer move for West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus, The Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg has revealed.

The Red Devils have reportedly earmarked the Ghanaian international as a potential winger target alongside their primary option, Bryan Mbeumo, who is now in talks to join from Brentford.

Interest in Kudus is thought to be high this summer, with at least four Premier League clubs believed to be keeping close tabs on him, including Chelsea and Newcastle.

West Ham are reportedly looking to sell Kudus to raise funds for Graham Potter’s summer rebuild but have yet to attract any concrete offers.

According to Steinberg, Chelsea held initial talks with West Ham over Kudus’ arrival but failed in their approach and have moved on to pursuing Borussia Dortmund starlet Jamie Gittens instead.

West Ham were also reportedly uninterested when Man United proposed a swap deal, as they are looking for a straight sale, potentially worth around his £85m release clause.

Kudus is believed to be keen on a departure this summer after struggling to impress last season, with five goals and three assists in 32 Premier League appearances.

The ‘world-class’ forward, who joined West Ham from Ajax in the summer of 2023, has three years left on his contract, running until June 2028.

Man Utd confirm deal for Wolves’ Cunha

Manchester United have agreed a deal with Wolves for the signing of Brazil forward Matheus Cunha.

The 26-year-old is set to become United’s first signing of the summer after the club activated a £62.5m release clause in Cunha’s Wolves contract.

The former Atletico Madrid player will sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford, with the option of a further 12 months.

Cunha was in Manchester over the weekend to complete a medical with the club.

The deal, which is subject to visa approval and registration procedures, is expected to be completed once Cunha returns from international duty with Brazil later this month.

Cunha left the Lowry Hotel in Salford on Sunday morning to join up with the national side.

Brazil face Ecuador on Thursday (Friday 00:00 BST) in a World Cup qualifier, which will be Carlo Ancelotti’s first game in charge.

The forward scored 31 goals in 76 appearances for Wolves after completing a permanent move in 2023.

He joined the club in a £35m deal from Atletico Madrid, following a successful six-month loan spell the previous season.

Ruben Amorim is keen to strengthen United’s attack this summer after the club’s worst-ever Premier League campaign – they finished in 15th.

  • Man Utd comeback denies Everton in dramatic draw

Man Utd comeback denies Everton in dramatic draw

Manchester United staged a late comeback before being saved by VAR as they avoided plunging deeper into crisis with a dramatic draw at Everton.

Everton’s resurgence under returning manager David Moyes – once of United – was poised to continue as the hosts exerted total domination in the first 45 minutes to establish a deserved two-goal lead at Goodison Park.

They exposed every United flaw in that opening half, Beto turning in his fifth goal under Moyes in the 19th minute after a goalmouth scramble before Abdoulaye Doucoure headed them two ahead.

The second Everton goal was a desperate moment for United defender Harry Maguire, who failed to react with any urgency after Andre Onana saved Jack Harrison’s shot, allowing Doucoure to rise above him to head home.

Everton remained in control until Bruno Fernandes steered home a free-kick with 18 minutes left, and Manuel Ugarte then drove in powerfully eight minutes later to draw United level.

United then survived a late scare when referee Andrew Madley awarded a penalty as Ashley Young went down under Maguire’s challenge, with Matthijs de Ligt also tugging the Everton veteran, but the decision was reversed after a video assistant referee check.

Man Utd scrapped LGBTQ+ jacket plans

Manchester United abandoned plans to wear a jacket supporting the LGBTQ+ community before Sunday’s win over Everton because a player refused to wear it.

The Athletic, external said defender Noussair Mazraoui declined to take part in the initiative, citing his Muslim faith.

United declined to confirm the identity of the player when approached by BBC Sport. Mazraoui’s agent also declined to comment.

LGBTQ+ supporters’ club Rainbow Devils said it was a “great disappointment” but United said players are “entitled to hold their own individual opinions”.

Rainbow armbands are being worn as Premier League clubs show support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport by taking part in charity Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign.

United captain Bruno Fernandes wore a rainbow armband during the 4-0 win over the Toffees at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Athletic reported that Mazraoui – a £15m summer signing from Bayern Munich – told team-mates he was not prepared to wear the jacket. The team then decided that no player would wear it so he would not be seen as the only one publicly refusing, according to the Athletic.

  • EPL: VAR misread West Ham penalty against Man Utd – Webb

EPL: VAR misread West Ham penalty against Man Utd – Webb

Referees’ chief Howard Webb says West Ham should not have been awarded a penalty during Erik ten Hag’s final game in charge of Manchester United on 27 October.

The Hammers were given the decision on the recommendation of video assistant referee Michael Oliver following Matthijs de Ligt’s challenge on Danny Ings.

David Coote, the on-field referee, had waved play on following the incident but awarded a penalty after reviewing the incident on the pitch-side monitor.

Jarrod Bowen scored the penalty, sealing a 2-1 win for West Ham. Ten Hag was sacked less than 24 hours later.

“I thought it was a misread by the VAR,” Webb told Sky Sports’ Mic’d Up programme.

“A VAR that’s normally really talented and reliable, but gets uber-focused in this situation on De Ligt’s leg. His leg coming through on to Danny Ings, not making any contact with the ball. The ball’s already past De Ligt as he as he makes contact with Danny Ings.

“And the VAR sees that as a clear foul. I think he was too focused on that aspect. I don’t think he should have got involved.

“I think this is a situation where we’d leave the on-field decision as it is, probably whichever way it’s called. On balance, I don’t think it’s a penalty kick.”

On-field referees are not required to follow the recommendations of the VAR official.

“They are told that they are absolutely within their rights to keep their decision when they go to the screen,” said Webb.

Webb, who is chief of refereeing body PGMOL, was speaking publicly for the first time since Coote was suspended with immediate effect after he appeared to make derogatory comments about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp in a video that circulated online.

“We became aware of a video that was being circulated on social media that we are taking very seriously,” said Webb.

“We’ve instigated a full investigation. One of our referees, David Coote, has been suspended with immediate effect pending the outcome of that investigation.

“There’s not much more I can say at this stage until we’ve worked through that investigation.”

Man Utd set to appoint Lisbon’s Amorim as new manager

Sporting Lisbon have confirmed that Manchester United is interested in hiring their Portuguese coach, Ruben Amorim, following the sack of Erik Ten Hag.

United ended Ten Hag’s two-year tenure on Monday after a disappointing 2-1 loss to West Ham, leaving the club in 14th place in the Premier League.

Amorim, 39, has quickly become the frontrunner to take over after United’s poor start to the season.

A statement from Sporting Lisbon indicated that United is prepared to activate his release clause of 10 million euros (£8.3 million, $10.8 million).

“Manchester United have expressed their interest in recruiting coach Ruben Amorim and have said they are ready to pay the 10 million euro release clause,” Sporting said.

Sport journalist, Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the news on his X page saying  “ Manchester United are set to pay €10m exit clause for Rúben Amorim to become new manager, here we go!

Sporting confirmed formal communication received from #MUFC for Amorim to be appointed.

Amorim has already said yes to Man Utd proposal and project.”

Since joining Sporting in March 2020, Amorim has secured two Portuguese league titles.

Despite significant summer spending in the transfer market, Manchester United has managed to win just one of their last eight matches across all competitions.

Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as interim manager, but the club seems focused on Ruben Amorim, who is regarded as one of Europe’s top young coaches.

The former Ajax coach, who joined United in May 2022, had fiercely defended his record and won two trophies in his two full seasons for the club before being relieved of his duties on Monday.

Late Bowen penalty gives West Ham win against Man Utd

Jarrod Bowen scored an injury-time penalty to condemn Manchester United to a 2-1 defeat in the Premier League and ease pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui.

Casemiro thought he grabbed a point for the visitors when he headed home with less than 10 minutes left to cancel out Crysencio Summerville’s 74th-minute opener.

But United were furious as referee David Coote was sent to the pitchside monitor by the Video Assistant Referee with three minutes remaining to review Matthijs de Ligt’s challenge on Danny Ings in the box.

Despite protests from United’s players over a handball by Ings, Coote pointed to the spot and Bowen calmly converted, slotting past Andre Onana.

United dominated possession and chances in the first half at London Stadium, but the visitors lacked a clinical edge and were left to rue their missed chances.

After a lacklustre first half, West Ham were an improved side after the interval and peppered United’s box with attacks, and they were eventually rewarded when Summerville slid in to direct Ings’ scuffed effort into the back of the net.

The result leaves United 14th in the Premier League with just three wins in their opening nine matches, piling further pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

It is a statement win for West Ham, however, as they move one place above United after an underwhelming start to the season.

  • Man Utd tipped to appoint Carrick amid Tuchel rumours

Man Utd tipped to appoint Carrick amid Tuchel rumours

A former Premier League chairman claims that Man Utd are likely to go for Michael Carrick over Thomas Tuchel if they replace Erik ten Hag.

Man Utd have scraped together just eight points in their first seven fixtures with Ten Hag’s men currently 14th in the Premier League table.

That has seen Ten Hag come under huge pressure from supporters, the media, and, more recently, INEOS and the Man Utd hierarchy to turn their fortunes around.

It doesn’t seem that Man Utd are going to sack Ten Hag immediately, as the international break would’ve have provided the perfect opportunity, with some claiming they want to give him a chance until nearer the new year.

Former Chelsea boss Tuchel had seemed favourite to take over with reports indicating that Man Utd had him top of their list if they decided to sack the Dutchman – but reports on Friday indicated the German was in ‘advanced talks’ over the England job.
