Under-fire Ten Hag’ together’ with Man Utd hierarchy

Erik ten Hag is adamant he still has the backing of Manchester United’s hierarchy as the under-fire boss prepares for a crucial Premier League clash at Aston Villa.

Just three months after signing a contract extension, Ten Hag is fighting to save his job following a troubled start to the season.

Man Utd forward Greenwood set for Marseille medical

Mason Greenwood is due to have a medical before completing a permanent move from Manchester United to Marseille.

Sources have said forward Greenwood has agreed personal terms, with a fee, including add-ons, of more than 30m euros (£25.2m) in place around a contract that is set to run to 2029.

United have negotiated what they regard as a significant sell-on clause.

Marseille were criticised by the city mayor last week when their intentions became apparent.

However, it appears they are undeterred and Greenwood is now expected to become part of Roberto de Zerbi’s squad for the coming campaign.

Greenwood has not played for United since January 2022. Serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.

United sources said the 22-year-old briefly met senior club officials last week, when it was confirmed the club stance remained for the player to be sold.

The Old Trafford club have added Netherlands forward Joshua Zirkzee to their squad this month, with the fee for a homegrown player helping to ease slightly what is acknowledged to be a ‘tight’ financial position as United look to meet the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.

Greenwood is set to fill the void left by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who announced his departure from the Ligue 1 side on social media.

“Merci Marseille,” Aubameyang wrote on Instagram. “It’s time for me to start a new chapter.”

The 35-year-old former Arsenal and Chelsea striker is set to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadisiyah.

  • Man Utd edge Coventry to set up Man City FA Cup final

Man Utd edge Coventry to set up Man City FA Cup final

Manchester United recovered from an astonishing collapse to beat Coventry on penalties in an FA Cup classic, setting up a second straight final against Manchester City.

Erik ten Hag’s men won the shootout at Wembley 4-2, with Rasmus Hojlund scoring the decisive spot kick after the teams were level at 3-3 following extra time.

The game perfectly encapsulated a chaotic season for Ten Hag’s men, who are well off the pace in the Premier League.

There was no hint of what was to come when United coasted into a 3-0 lead against their second-tier opponents in the London sunshine, with goals from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes.

But they have made a habit of tossing away leads in recent weeks.

Second-half strikes from Ellis Simms and Callum O’Hare gave the 1987 FA Cup winners hope and Haji Wright levelled from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time, capping a scarcely credible comeback.

Coventry fans taunted Ten Hag with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” as belief infused the massed ranks of supporters clad in light blue.

A gripping period of extra time followed, with both teams hitting the woodwork, before United held their nerve to win the shootout.

“It was an incredible game, a strange game too,” Ten Hag told ITV. “We had total control for so long and then gave it away in the last part of the game. We did show resilience to win the penalty shootout.”

“We have to improve,” he added. “We talk a lot about this. First you have to put yourself in a winning position but then you have to take it over the line.”

Coventry manager Mark Robins famously played a key part in United’s FA Cup win in 1990, a triumph that launched two decades of success under Alex Ferguson.

But his team’s push to reach the Championship play-offs has faded in recent weeks and they travelled to Wembley as underdogs despite United’s stuttering season.

United, 12-time winners of the competition, settled early and took the lead in the 23rd minute after a fine move down the right finished off by McTominay.

Marcus Rashford forced a fine save from Bradley Collins late in the first half but United doubled their lead from the resulting corner, with Maguire heading home Fernandes’s cross.

Coventry, who scored twice in stoppage time to beat Premier League team Wolves in the quarter-finals, looked brighter in the early stages of the second period.

But the wind was taken out of their sails when Fernandes’s deflected shot found its way past Collins in the 58th  minute.

Coventry pulled a goal back when top-scorer Simms connected with a cross from substitute Fabio Tavares in the 71st  minute and O’Hare reduced the deficit further.

The club’s fans were now in full voice as their team mounted waves of attacks and they were level in the 95th  minute when Wright scored from the penalty spot after Aaron Wan-Bissaka was adjudged to have handled.

Fernandes rattled the crossbar early in the first period of extra time when set up by substitute Amad Diallo.

Simms then smashed a shot off the underside of the crossbar as time started to run out.

Coventry thought they had won it in the dying moments, sending their fans delirious when substitute Victor Torp poked the ball past Andre Onana but a VAR check ruled that Wright was offside by the narrowest of margins in the build-up.

Casemiro took the first penalty in the shootout, which was saved by Collins.

But O’Hare and captain Ben Sheaf failed to convert, leaving Hojlund with the job of sending United through and he made no mistake.

A disappointed Robins said defeat felt like “kick in the teeth”.

“We’ve just said to them they’ve put themselves right up there in the history of the football club,” he said. “People will talk about this game for a long time.”

Manchester City, who beat United in the 2023 final, edged Chelsea 1-0 in the other semi-final on Saturday.

It is only the second time in the competition’s history that the same two teams have reached successive finals, the first sides to do so since 1885.

UCL: Man Utd, Galatasaray settle for draw

Manchester United’s Champions League hopes suffered another setback as a horror show from goalkeeper Andre Onana allowed Galatasaray to earn a draw in a classic match in Istanbul.

Erik ten Hag’s side did so much right and twice held a two-goal lead but errors from Onana threw Galatasaray lifelines to leave United bottom of Group A with their hopes of reaching the knockout phase in the balance before their final game at home to Bayern Munich.

If Copenhagen beat Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena later on Wednesday, Manchester United will be knocked out of the competition with a game to spare, although they could still qualify for the Europa League.

United, as they did in their last Champions League game in Copenhagen, were in a commanding position early on after superb strikes from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes inside the first 18 minutes.

Onana’s poor attempt to stop Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick got Galatasaray back in the game before half-time but United looked to have gained control again in what was a hostile atmosphere when Scott McTominay turned in Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross 10 minutes after the break to make it 3-1.

However Ziyech was gifted a second goal from another free-kick after an even more stark blunder from Onana, who made a hapless attempt to keep the ball out, before Galatasaray substitute Kerem Akturkoglu’s explosive finish brought them level with 19 minutes left.

In a dramatic end-to-end finale, Wilfried Zaha missed a glorious chance for Galatasaray and Fernandes struck the upright as United’s Champions League destiny was taken out of their own hands.

Man Utd chief executive Arnold to leave club

Manchester United chief executive Richard Arnold is to leave the club after 16 years as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s deal for a 25% stake in the Old Trafford side nears completion.

Arnold replaced Ed Woodward in February 2022 and will provide “transitional support” until the end of December.

His departure comes as Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group prepares to finalise its £1.25bn minority purchase of United.

No announcement on Ratcliffe’s deal is expected on Wednesday.

EPL: Man Utd beat Brenford with late McTominay double

Scott McTominay scored twice in stoppage time as Manchester United came from behind to record a sensational Premier League victory against Brentford at Old Trafford.

United were staring at a third successive home league loss for the first time since 1977 thanks to Mathias Jensen’s first-half effort.

McTominay was only brought on with three minutes remaining as manager Erik ten Hag desperately searched for salvation – and the Scot duly provided it.

The home fans celebrated long after the final whistle as their team headed round on a lap of honour, which was probably a bit extreme but, given the circumstances, totally understandable.

EPL: Crystal Palace claim impressive win at Man Utd

Manchester United suffered a second successive defeat at home in the Premier League as Joachim Andersen’s superb strike gave Crystal Palace an impressive victory at Old Trafford.

The two teams were meeting for the second time in five days, with Erik ten Hag’s side comfortably winning 3-0 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

But Palace rested a number of first-team players for that game and were a different proposition on Saturday as they produced the perfect away performance.

After Tyrick Mitchell cleared Rasmus Hojlund’s effort off the line, Palace took the lead when Andersen superbly drove a first-time effort into the top corner after a free-kick.

Manchester United piled on the pressure after that, but struggled to find a way through the Palace defence. When they did they found goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in superb form.

Johnstone made two crucial saves in the second half to preserve Palace’s lead, first pushing over Bruno Fernandes’ dipping effort before keeping out Hojlund’s bullet header.

The Palace goal continued to live a charmed life but Manchester United could not find a way through as the visitors secured a win that moved them above their opponents to ninth, with the hosts dropping to 10th.

No good culture at Man Utd when i arrived – Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag says there was “no good culture” when he arrived at Manchester United and insists strict leadership is what the club’s owners want.

It comes after the announcement that winger Jadon Sancho will train away from the first team until issues with the manager are resolved.

Ten Hag opted not to talk about Sancho on Friday and did not say how long he would remain away from the first team.

“It is my job to control the standards,” Ten Hag said.

“Strict lines is what the club asked me because there was no good culture before I entered last season.

“Of course, it is never someone only makes one mistake, it is a whole process before you come to a certain outcome about strict lines.

“If staff or players or whoever, there is a structure to cross lines so you have to be strong.”

Manager Ten Hag took charge at United ahead of last season.

He left Sancho out of his squad for the loss at Arsenal earlier this month, saying the England international’s training performances had been below standard.

The 23-year-old Sancho rejected the Dutchman’s reasoning and claimed he had been “a scapegoat for a long time”.

The announcement comes nine months after he was suspended by his country’s federation midway through the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
