  • Man, 35, in court for alleged wine theft

    A 35-year-old man, Joshua Effiong, yesterday appeared in the Tinubu Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing 25 cartons of Moet wine worth N2.9million.

    According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the accused was alleged to have stolen the wine from one Adu Elizabeth, a trader, who resides at Close 4, Victoria Garden City, Lagos.

    Effiong is standing trial with a 40-year-old trader, Mojisola Bamgbade of 28, Shipeolu Street, Somolu, who allegedly received the items from the first accused, having known they were stolen.

    Between the two of them, they are facing a four-count charge of conspiracy to commit felony, obtaining goods under false pretence, stealing and receiving stolen goods. The duo pleaded not guilty.

    However, the prosecutor, Inspector Ignatius Okeke, told the court that Effiong, with others at large, committed the offence on April 28, at about 9.am.

    He said that the complainant, Adu, had come to the police station to report on the said date that she had supplied 25 cartons wine valued at N2,925,000 to Effiong on credit.

    According to the prosecutor, the complainant said that the accused absconded immediately the items were supplied.

    He said that Effiong was later arrested and the stolen items were traced to Bamgbade.

    Okeke said the offences contravened Sections 312, 326 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The Magistrate, Mr L.A. Owolabi ordered Effiong to be remanded in prison, saying he had jumped bail in a different case before the court, hence he could not grant him same again.

    He, however, granted the co-accused bail in the sum of N400,000 and two sureties in like sum. The magistrate adjourned the case till June 30.

     

  • Man ‘stabbed’ to death by cobbler

    An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, yesterday remanded a 21-year-old, Olalekan Aweda, in prison for allegedly stabbing a man to death with a dagger.

    Mrs O.I. Adelaja, the Chief Magistrate, ordered that the accused should be remanded at Ikoyi Prisons for 30 days pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The accused, a cobbler, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    Earlier, Prosecutor, Insp. Richard Odigie, told the court that the offences were committed on May 8 at about 10.00 p.m. at Joseph Street on Lagos Island.

    He said the accused and the deceased 36-year-old Ganiu Bello had a misunderstanding and Aweda vowed to deal with Bello.

    “On that day, Aweda ambushed Bello and upon sighting him, stabbed him with a dagger on his neck killing him instantly.”

    The case has been adjourned to July 8.

     

  • Man docked for Coke ‘theft’

    A 22-year-old unemployed, Stanley Amoebi, has been charged before a Badagry Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos State for allegedly stealing a pack of coke valued at N1,000.

    The accused is facing a charge of stealing.

    Prosecuting  Inspector Innocent Uko told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 1 at about 6.00 p.m. at Ajara Shopping Complex in Badagry.

    Uko noted that the accused stole a pack of coke from the complainant, Mrs Senami Hungbo, at her shop.

    “He went to the woman’s shop to buy a pack of coke, but while the woman was looking for change for him, he disappeared with another pack. The woman pursued him and he was apprehended.’’

    Uko noted that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    Counsel to the accused, Mr Yemi Fowler, pleaded with the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.

    Magistrate Abiodun Etti, granted the accused N20,000 bail.

    He adjourned the case till  July 3.

  • Man ‘defiles’ teenage daughters, nieces

    A 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Awoniyi, has been arrested by the police in Oyo State for allegedly defiling his two daughters and nieces in Ibadan, the state capital.

    Awoniyi, an herbalist, reportedly committed the evil act on Friday night at Moniya, when his two nieces slept over in his house because their mother had travelled to Lagos.

    His teenage daughters alleged that their father slept with them anytime he was drunk.

    His nieces claimed that Awoniyi gave them a black soap to bath around 1am and had carnal knowledge of them throughout the night.

    Parading the suspect yesterday at the police command in Eleyele, Ibadan, the Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Katsina, said the man has committed an abomination.

    According to him, the doctor’s report showed that the victims had STDs.

    “This is a warning to others  to desist or they  will will face the wrath of the law.

    Criminals have three options in the state. One, they should abandon their  acts and embrace decency.

    “Two, they should relocate from Oyo or be ready to be arrested and prosecuted.

    “We will not relent with our painstaking effort to fish out more criminals in the state,” he said

    His first daughter said:” When our cousins spent the night in our house, my father promised to give them a black soap to bath in the midnight so that if they do anything wrong their mother will not beat them, but after using the soap, he slept with them.

    “He also slept with my sister  and I. This is the third time he will be doing such”

    But Awoniyi debunked the allegation, saying that it was a conspiracy to destroy his personality.

    “I am a good herbalist and a traditionalist. I did not sleep with any of my children.

    “When my nieces spent the night in my house, I only gave them a black soap to bath around 1am so that they will not get sick.

    “I prepare herbs for people to receive favour, sell very well and be successful.”

    His sister, Mrs Jelilat Olayiwola, said when she returned home from Lagos, she searched everywhere for her daughters but could not find them.

    “ I was afraid that they may have been kidnapped.

    “ In the morning, my brother came to my house to ask why I sent my daughters away.

    “I said I did not and urged him to ask them to return home. When they returned home, they started behaving strangely  and I questioned them and they told me that he slept with them,” she said.

  • Man charged with unlawful sexual affair

    A 26-year-old man, Imonite John, yesterday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for alleged rape of a 19-year-old girl.

    The accused is facing a charge of forceful sexual intercourse with the girl, Yetunde Olaniran.

    The prosecutor, Etim Nkankuk, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 11 at Vantage Restaurant, Lekki, a Lagos suburb.

    Nkankuk said the mother of the accused had sent him to go and check for the exchange rate of the dollar to naira.

    The accused, instead of carrying out his mother’s assignment, allegedly used his mother’s car to perpetrate the act of forcefully having sexual intercourse with a girl, he said.

    The prosecutor said the accused invited Yetunde on a date and asked her for sex which the teenager had bluntly refused.

    Nkankuk said the accused allegedly squeezed his victim’s neck to overpower her before forcefully having carnal knowledge of her inside his mother’s Honda Civic Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked JJJ 603 AV.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Olatunbosun Abolarinwa granted him N250, 000 bail  with two sureties in the like sum. He adjourned the case till June 18.

    Man, 19, faces N1.3m ‘theft’

    A 19-year-old man, Ibrahim Wasiu, yesterday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, for allegedly robbing a motorist of N1.3million in traffic.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Eranus Nnamonu told the court that the offence was committed on March 4 at 9p.m., on the Ojo Expressway, Lagos.

    He said the accused attacked Mr Stanley Meziem, who was driving.

    “The defendant at knife point, forced out Meziem through his car window, assaulted him and obtained his digital camera, Ipad and N1.3m cash”, Nnamonu said.

     

  • Man, 45, ‘defiles’ girl, 12

    A 45-year-old man, Friday Sunday, who allegedly defiled a 12-year-old girl, yesterday appeared before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court in Lagos.

    Sunday, who resides in Ajegunle, Lagos, is being tried for alleged indecent act.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Soji Ojaokomo, said the accused committed the offence on May 9 at his residence.

    Ojaokomo said that the accused, who was living in the same house with the parents of the minor, lured the girl into his room and started inserting his fingers into her private parts.

    Ojaokomo said the offence contravened Section 134(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    Sunday pleaded not guilty.

    Senior Magistrate Patrick Adekomaiya ordered that the case file be duplicated and a copy forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

    Adekomaiya granted the accused N50,000 bail with one surety in the like sum and adjourned the case to June 11.

     

  • Court remands man for ‘murder’

    An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos yesterday ordered Rotimi Abolarin to be remanded in Ikoyi Prisons for alleged murder. He was accused of killing an unidentified person.

    Chief Magistrate Olatunbosun Abolarinwa ordered that Abolarin be kept in Ikoyi Prisons for 30 days, pending the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The court declined to take the plea of the accused because it lacks jurisdiction to try the case.

    Abolarinwa adjourned the case to June 18.

    Earlier, prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Etim Nkankuk told the court that Abolarin committed the offence with others at large.

    He said the accused committed the offence on January 23 at the Nigeria Railway Corporation Line, opposite Mainland Hotel, Oyingbo in Ebute Meta, Lagos.

    The prosecutor said the death of the yet-to-be-identified person was caused by blows to a delicate part of his body by the accused and his fellow conspirators.

    He said as at the time of the arraignment of the accused, the deceased’s identity was yet to be ascertained.

    “The murder suspect had allegedly killed another person by beating him to death,’’ he said.

     

  • Man charged with murder

    An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos yesterday remanded one Lucky Nnaeto, 33, in Ikoyi Prison for allegedly causing the death of 39-year-old Tunde Odutola.

    Magistrate Adefioye said the accused should be kept in prison pending receipt of legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).

    Adefioye adjourned the case to June 17.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Corporal Iyobosa Onaiwu, told the court that Nnaeto and others at large, beat Odutola to death.

    Onaiwu said the accused committed the offence on April 19 at Awe Crescent by Shipeolu Link in Onipanu, Lagos.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 221 and 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    Nnaeto pleaded not guilty.

     

  • Man, 38 ‘defiles’ girl, 9

    A 38-year-old man, Cyprian Edundu, who allegedly defiled the nine-year-old daughter of his co-tenant, was yesterday charged before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court in Lagos.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Soji Ojaokomo told the court that the accused committed the offence on October 10 at his residence.

    Ojaokomo said the accused, who lives in the same house with the mother of the minor, lured her into his room and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

    “The complainant said the accused threatened to kill the minor if she dared to tell her mother about it. The girl, however, told her mother how Edundu had lured her into his room in the past and how he attempted to have unlawful carnal knowledge of her again,” Ojaokomo said.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.
