  • ‘Man, insects share the same world’

The Chuwkuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University in Uli, Anambra State, has held its first inaugural lecture, focusing on insects and their, relationship with man. The event was attended by staff and students, civil servants, traditional rulers and  neighbouring institutions of higher learning.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof Fidelis Okafor, said the lecture was a giant step in taking the institution to greater heights.

Delivering his paper titled: ‘’Insects and man: species, diversity and interactions, Prof Chukwunenye Anene said as men and insects share the same world, there was a constant interaction between the two, adding that the intensity of this interaction was contingent upon the size of the human population and upon the number of insects both in terms of the individuals and species.

The professor of entomology said only a small percentage of insect was antagonistic to man, and an equal number was beneficial and great majority were essentially neutral.

  • My wife is evil, wasteful, says man

•‘I don’t know why he hates me’

A 62-year-old property agent, Deji Odutola, aka Hadji White, has prayed the Customary Court in Alagbado, Lagos to dissolve his eight-year-old marriage to Sherifat. Oduntayo is accusing his wife of cruelty, covetousness and dishonesty.

The marriage, which was sealed under Native and Customary Law in 2006, is blessed with a male child.

“My wife is evil. Even before I married her, I had allocated all my property to my children here in Nigeria and abroad. I, however, added a caveat: that I could take everything back, if not properly managed.

So, I gave my wife the house that my first daughter couldn’t maintain and we agreed she would be giving me some amounts of money annually. When she was due to make the first payment, she defaulted. Instead, she spent the money on her six children from her previous marriages.

“This is the third year and my wife hasn’t given me a kobo from the house I built with my sweat. When I celebrated my birthday, my wife couldn’t make any financial contribution. She only bought a standing fan for me, which I returned because it was the least I expected from her.

“I have been wearing white dresses for 37 years, so I don’t want my reputation tarnished in anyway; otherwise, I would have engaged some hoodlums to throw her out of my house. She keeps giving flimsy excuses, saying she doesn’t know how to pack her things. She even claims that the house is her son’s share of the property I allocated. But it is a blatant lie.

“I think our marriage had crumbled before we got here because it’s over three years since I slept with her or even saw her. All I want is the money she collected for four years. I want her out of the house and out of my life, he said.”

In her defence, 45-year-old Sherifat said:” I really can’t figure out when the problem started. This is because among his 10 wives, I have always been treated as a slave. I have always endured the insults and abuses because I am tired of sleeping under different roofs.

“When I was expecting our child, he complained of sleeping beside an expectant mother, adding that it made him broke.  Surprisingly, 41 days after I was delivered of the child, my husband asked me if the child was his or someone else’s.

“My husband has moved me to three different houses for no genuine reasons. I change houses like clothes. Contrary to his claim, he didn’t allocate any house to my son.

“I used the money I got from the tenants to renovate the house because it was untidy. I wonder why he is asking for money now.  Since we moved into the house, he has not sent money for our son’s upkeep. When I tried to see him, he ordered his workers to throw me out. He doesn’t respect me at all let alone his child. Our son was barely two years old when my husband complained that he didn’t greet him. So, he said he won’t sign any document in my son’s name.

“I don’t know why he said he is just seeing me after three years. I remember we saw each other at a hotel recently and we even made love that day.

“Recently, my husband’s friends rough-handled me, seized my items and took me to another house, as ordered by my ‘rich’ husband. I refused to stay there because it was deserted and it had ‘For sale’ boldly written on it. If he can allocate the house to my son, I will gladly live there; otherwise, I will go back to the house I renovated.

“I don’t know why my husband hates me because he has allotted some property to some women he married after me and the children he had after my son. I don’t want a divorce.”

The court President, Mr. Olubode Sekoni, invited the parties to a chamber discussion and ordered them to bring four relations each.

The case was adjourned till September 29.

  • I’m married to trouble, man tells court

A traditional medical practitioner, Olatunde Salia, is seeking to divorce his  wife, Ganiyat, because of alleged attempted murder, rudeness and constant fighting.

Salia, who said he remarried to kill loneliness, told the Customary Court in Alagbado, a Lagos suburb: “I thought I had passed the stage of child nursing. I never knew I was wrong. I wanted peace but I found trouble.”

Salia, who said the 12-year-old union was contracted under Native and Customary Law, added: “My wife knows the nature of my job, but she complains bitterly whenever I attend to female clients. She is very temperamental. The last time I tried to avoid her trouble, she ate rat killer. Out of fear, I hurriedly took her to a nearby hospital at night.

“My wife and I wash separately to the extent of fighting over clothesline. She lacks respect and embarrasses me publicly. We have children but from different spouses. We married to support each other in times of distress. What else do I want from a woman who doesn’t listen to me? I can’t bear the pain anymore; I don’t mind dissolution.”

Ganiyat, however, told the court: “How can another woman buy foodstuffs into our home when I am still alive? He told me to leave his house if I was tired of him. I slightly pushed him because of the provocative statement. My husband swathed his leg and told his friends that I intentionally wanted to destroy his leg. He is quick to anger. He punched my eyes because I accused him of selling on credit; I have been in pains for over two weeks now.”

“ I lied to have taken a rat poison because my presence in the house wasn’t noticed. I don’t regret my actions. My stubborn attitude has brought me this long in the marriage. I am sorry for the trouble I have caused him. At this level, death should be the only thing separating us.”

The Court President, Mr Olubode Sekoni, advised them to cease fighting and maintain peace since they still live together. The case was adjourned till Thursday for judgment.

  • ‘Bode George is a drowning man’

The Ekiti State government has condemned Chief Olabode George’s statement that Governor Kayode Fayemi “lost” the June 21 governorship election because he did not pay workers’ salaries.

The statement was credited to George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and published by a national newspaper on July 30.

In a statement, the government said: “While it may be needless to join issues with the ex-naval chief, who is fast becoming a drowning man and a failed politician, there is need to set the records straight and tell the world that the Ekiti State government, under Fayemi, has in the last three-and-a-half years been responsive to the yearnings of civil servants and Ekiti residents.

“It is on record that the Ekiti State government pays workers’ salaries and allowances before the end of the month and has statutorily done this without failing since its inception in October, 2010.

“Besides this, the government has increased workers’ salaries and allowances twice without pressure. Teachers enjoy a relatively higher pay than their counterparts in any part of Nigeria because of the 20 per cent Rural Allowance and 20 per cent Core Subjects Allowance introduced by the Fayemi administration, as well as the 27.5 Teachers Pecuniary Allowance.

“To achieve a consistent and hitch-free payment system, the government introduced the bio-metric data capturing scheme that enables workers to get paid on the same day, thus enabling them to receive salaries and allowances much earlier than their colleagues in most states.

“Many analysts and political commentators have adduced reasons for the controversial outcome of the June 21 election and not one of these analysts, except the myopic George, has attributed the result of the election to the purported failure of the labour-friendly government to pay workers salaries when due.

“One  would have thought that the once highly respected chief ought to have matured with age, stature and status and analyse topical issues as a statesman, rather than seeing things from a parochially-partisan posture and platform, in view of the fact that he served the country in various capacities at both the state and national levels.

“George is advised to reflect on his pepper soup and champagne days as the military governor of the old Ondo State, where he stood on the commonwealth of the state for years without initiating any meaningful project in Ekiti Division, which was an integral part of the then Ondo State, other than his famous statement that ‘the people would always remember that a Lagos boy once passed through the state’.

“Notwithstanding the misinformation contained in the statement of the ex-naval chief on the Ekiti election, we are compelled to sympathise with him, as he is presently currying the favour of his paymasters in Abuja in order to be rehabilitated and reintegrated into the main stream of the purported largest party, having crashed from the mountain top to the valley of power, during which he lost touch with the realities of time.”
