EPL preview: Arsenal new boys face early derby baptism of fire

New Arsenal signings Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan will get an early taste of the north London derby atmosphere when they face Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Saturday.

The pair enjoyed comfortable home debuts in last weekend’s 5-1 rout of Everton.

But their local rivals are sure to provide tougher opposition as the two teams continue their bids for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Spurs are fifth in the table, four points ahead of sixth-placed Arsenal, one behind fourth-placed Chelsea and two adrift of third-placed Liverpool with 12 games left.

Arsenal outplayed Tottenham in a 2-0 victory in the reverse fixture.

But Spurs have reasons to be confident, having beaten second-placed Manchester United and drawn 2-2 at Liverpool in their last two games.

Liverpool travel to St Mary’s on Sunday to face a Southampton side who ended a 12-match winless run in the league.

The Saints climbed two points clear of the relegation zone with a 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion in their last match.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will welcome bottom club West Brom to Stamford Bridge on Monday on the back of losing 3-0 at home to Bournemouth and 4-1 away to Watford.

  • Sanchez gets court hammer over tax evasion

Sanchez gets court hammer over tax evasion

Manchester United’s new signing Alexis Sanchez has  accepted the punishment for defrauding the tax authorities of £900,000 during his time at Barcelona.

Sanchez, 29, will  not have to go to prison because it is his first offence and the sentence is less than two years.

But the Chile star, who is the highest paid player in the Premier League, on £350,000-a-week, must pay a fine of £525,000 in addition to the tax he owed on image rights earnings over his three years at the Nou Camp.

The court heard that Sanchez set up a company called Numidia Trading in Malta to avoid paying the tax between 2012 and 2013, having moved his earnings from a Chile-based company called Inversiones Alsan.

Sanchez is the latest big name to become embroiled in the tax investigation into leading figures in Spanish football.

United manager Jose Mourinho remains under investigation over £2.94m of unpaid contributions despite claiming at a court hearing in November that his financial affairs are in order.

Sanchez’s former Barca teammate Lionel Messi was given a 21-month prison sentence in 2016, but exchanged it for a £223,000 fine last year.

Javier Mascherano and Ricardo Carvalho both settled after being given suspended prison sentences, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s case over unpaid taxes of £13m is ongoing.

Sanchez admitted his guilt and agreed to pay the Spanish authorities the money defrauded, plus interest.

The Chile international is the latest high-profile player associated with LaLiga to have been punished for tax fraud over recent years.

In 2016, Lionel Messi was handed a 21-month prison sentence, although his similarly non-custodial term was later changed to a fine.

Happy Sanchez thrills family with Paris trip

Alexis Sanchez may have undertaken extra training in recent weeks – but the Manchester United forward is also enjoying some well-earned down time after his hectic start to the new year.

After months of speculation over a move away from Emirates, the Chile international put pen to paper on a £350,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford last month.

Sanchez netted his first goal for his new club in their 2-0 win over Huddersfield on Saturday and toasted the milestone with a trip to Paris.

The forward took his family to the French capital on a private jet and then posed in front of the city’s most famous landmarks.

Alongside family members — some of whom sported United shirts — Sanchez was pictured in front of the Eiffel Tower.

The Chile international also gave supporters an insight into his life of luxury by posting photographs taken from inside the private jet.

Sanchez will be back in action for United this weekend when they travel to struggling Newcastle on Sunday.

And on Monday the club’s record goalscorer, Wayne Rooney, gave a ringing endorsement of United’s newest hitman.

‘For me Sanchez is the perfect player for United. He’s got aggression, passion, desire and you can see he’s a winner,’ Rooney told Sky Sports.

‘That’s what they’ve lacked, players around Lukaku that are going to push Lukaku on and try and help him get a bit more freedom and score more goals.

‘Sanchez will do that, they’re the players you want because they lift other players and give them an extra five per cent.’

  • Sanchez opens goal account at Old Trafford

Sanchez opens goal account at Old Trafford

Alexis Sanchez opened his Manchester United goal scoring account on his home debut as they beat Huddersfield 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

After a first half lacking in chances, United went ahead 10 minutes after the break through Romelu Lukaku’s 97th Premier League goal, turning home Juan Mata’s fine cross

Sanchez then grabbed his first United goal in unconventional fashion, seeing a penalty he had originally won saved by Jonas Lossl, only to sweep the rebound into the net

The result means United claw back two points on leaders Manchester City following their earlier draw at Burnley, and are now 13 points behind in second. Huddersfield, without a win in eight, are down to 19th.

Paul Pogba was named on the bench after an under-par showing in the midweek defeat by Tottenham, and United struggled to break down a stubborn Huddersfield in the first half.

Jesse Lingard and Sanchez stung the hands of Lossl in the Huddersfield goal, but United felt they should have had a penalty when Terence Kongolo’s hefty aerial challenge on Scott McTominay went unpunished.

Jose Mourinho made four changes from Wednesday night’s defeat at Spurs; Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Scott McTominay and Juan Mata came in, replacing Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial. Huddersfield made three changes; Tommy Smith came in for Chris Lowe, Rajiv van la Parra replaced Aaron Mooy and Collin Quaner was in for Steve Mounie.

Sanchez was at the centre of much of United’s play in the second half, seeing an effort denied by a last-ditch Tommy Smith block inside the box, before United got the opener their second-half intensity deserved.

After being played in behind Smith on the left flank, Mata’s first-time cross was swept past Lossl by Lukaku from 10 yards with his left foot.

Huddersfield are the 20th consecutive team to lose their first Premier League visit to Old Trafford, since Derby County won there 3-2 in 1996/97.

This was the 15th clean sheet Manchester United have kept in the Premier League this season, more than any other side.

The Terriers failed to score for the 10th time in Premier League away games this season, more than any other side in the competition.

Alexis Sanchez has had a hand in nine goals in his last ten Premier League games against newly-promoted sides (8 goals, 1 assist).

The Spaniard pulled the strings in midfield for United, providing four key passes, two more than the entire Huddersfield side.

His cross for Lukaku’s opener was superb, after a first half where United failed to gain any width in the final third Nemanja Matic was a close second in the man-of-the-match running, but Mata’s class told at Old Trafford.

United now go to Newcastle on Super Sunday at 2.15pm in the Premier League, while Huddersfield are at Birmingham for their FA Cup fourth-round replay on Tuesday evening before hosting Bournemouth on Sunday.

Tottenham win over Manchester United in front of record crowd

Tottenham Hotspur solidified their top- four credentials with a dominant 2-0 win over Manchester United in front of an English Premier League record crowd at Wembley on Wednesday.

Christian Eriksen gave the hosts the lead after 11 seconds, the second fastest goal in Premier League history.

Manchester United’s woeful defending was exposed again for Tottenham’s second, with Phil Jones turning the ball into his own net after 27 minutes.

The win lifted Tottenham two points behind third-placed Liverpool and Chelsea in fourth as second-placed Manchester United dropped 15 points behind leaders Manchester City.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking after the match, praised his players for putting up a fantastic performance.

He added that the result had put his team in a good position for a top four finish.

“It’s a fantastic dressing room after a fantastic performance. The performance was great and I congratulate the players because they deserve all the credit.

“The first goal was a fantastic goal. Christian Eriksen believed that it would arrive in this situation. We tell the young players to always anticipate.

“I am so pleased we are in the race for the top four.

“There’s a lot of games to play and that is why we need to stay focused.

“The early goal for us was good so that we can go on and dominate the game. That goal gave us more confidence and belief.

“Dele Alli was very good today, but all the team was great. The quality of performance was fantastic.

“It’ll be tough against Liverpool now because they are one of the best teams — but it’s about taking it one game at a time.”

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, on his part, said the goals scored against his side were ridiculous.

“It’s a performance that starts with a ridiculous goal. That goal after a few seconds has a big influence in the game because Tottenham can play the way they like to play.

“In the end, we played against a very good team. Both goals were ridiculous goals.

“The first goal is an accumulation of mistakes in spite of the fact that everything happened so fast. My players have watched the Tottenham kick-off many, many times.

“It was a really, really bad goal. After the first goal the team had a good reaction — we were there and tried to create.

“The second goal mentally kills the team. A team to win matches needs to score goals and also defend well — on this occasion we were very bad.’’

  • Mourinho Writes 94-year-old Man U fan

Mourinho Writes 94-year-old Man U fan

Jose Mourinho put aside his technical and tactical notes for a while to engage in something else at least for a few minutes, letter writing.

The Manchester United manager  took time out of his preparations to face Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Wednesday as he wrote a letter to an ill 94-year-old supporter.

Lifelong supporter Fredrick Schofield is recovering after suffering a stroke and the Portuguese boss felt compelled to get in touch after learning of his struggles.

‘We have recently been advised about all your wonderful dedication to Manchester United,’ Mourinho said in the letter.

‘I just wanted to write to you to thank you for your loyal support and devotion to the club. The enthusiasm of the fans continues to astound me.’

Mourinho signed off his letter by informing Schofield that ‘myself, the players and the staff are all thinking of you’ as his family surprised him with the personal note after reaching out to the Red Devils.

The 55-year-old United manager is often criticised for his icy persona on the touchline but this latest gesture is evidence of his commitment to engaging with the supporters.

Schofield’s grandson Kevin was the one to reach out to the club, which is even more surprising when it was revealed the youngster is a big Manchester City fan.

Speaking on how it came about on twitter, he said: ‘United exceeded my expectations here. Football passion in our city is amazing, divides us but can unify us when needed.’

United have won every game so far in 2018 and the Portuguese will be looking to continue the fine run when he takes his side to Wembley on Wednesday to take on Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham team.

Spurs were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by League Two Newport County in the FA Cup on Saturday while United put their League Two opponent, Yeovil Town, firmly to the sword in a resounding 4-0 win.

Alexis Sanchez is expected to make his Premier League debut for the Reds after joining the club from Arsenal last week.

The Chile forward impressed at Huish Park as he was chosen as the official ‘Man of the Match’, having played a part in United’s first two goals.

  • Sanchez checks his pets into £816/night luxury suite

Sanchez checks his pets into £816/night luxury suite

Manchester United’s new star signing Alexis Sanchez has dodged a dog ban while staying at a £816-a-night luxury hotel.

The £600,000-a-week winger was allowed to bring his two pet Labradors with him while he finds somewhere to live with his girlfriend – Chilean actress Mayte Rodriguez – having recently switched from North London rivals Arsenal.

And despite the zero tolerance policy on dogs, Sanchez shared a picture of the two pooches Atom and Humber, donning the famous red strip from inside the Lowry Hotel.

But one regular hotel guest was left unamused at the special treatment afforded to The Special One – Jose Mourinho’s – latest big money buy.

‘If he was an average Joe they wouldn’t allow it. They can’t change the rules just because a celeb is staying,’ the guest told The Sun.

The Chilean checked in to one of the five-star hotel’s luxury Riverside Suites, similar to the room Mourinho has been living in since his appointment at Old Trafford 18 months ago.

Sanchez is expected to earn £600,000 a week after image rights and bonuses taking home £27m annually before tax.

The Lowry has recently refurbished their half-a-dozen Riverside suites, which typically cost guests an average of £816 a night.

The hotel’s website states only guide dogs are allowed and staff at reception say no exceptions can be made.

Sanchez offered his Instagram followers a glimpse inside his room on Tuesday night and had dressed up his beloved dogs

Atom and Humber in United shirts with ‘Alexis 7’ on the back.

Given that the suites are 90 square metres – the largest in the city, according to the hotel – Sanchez’s pooches will have plenty of room.

The spacious suites feature a large bedroom, lounge and dining area, bathroom, kitchenette and walk-in wardrobe, plus can be connected to an adjoining room for more space

There is a Riverside Suite on each floor of the hotel, all overlooking the adjacent River Irwell, and each is described as having ‘the feeling of a stylish private apartment.’

Five of the six rooms can be connected to a deluxe room next door, meaning others can stay. Sanchez’s mother is also staying at the hotel as he settles into life at United.

The suites also boast a separate lounge and dining area for four people, bathroom, walk-in wardrobe and a kitchenette for preparing meals.

The recent upgrades have been inspired by the artworks of the painter Alan Rankle, who was born in nearby Oldham.

The bed headboards are a replica of one of Rankle’s works and the rest of the decor is styled accordingly to blend in with it.

Tea and coffee making facilities are included, along with a fridge and coffee machine.

All six of the rooms are packed with technology, including two Smart TVs, high-speed broadband and two direct-dial telephones with voice messaging. There is also an ethernet dataport and a connection for a fax machine, with guests given the machine itself on request.

Within the hotel itself guests have access to a gym and spa area, 24-hour room service and a concierge, while all Riverside Suite guests are offered in-suite check in, a bag packing service, valet and a full English breakfast.

If guests so choose, they can enhance their stay with six chocolate-dipped strawberries for £12 or a bottle of champagne for £100.

Much was made of Mourinho’s decision to continue staying in the Lowry, located just under three miles from Old Trafford and 12 miles from the Carrington training ground, rather than look for a house.

But the manager’s family are still living in London and Mourinho makes regular trips south to visit them.

Sanchez, having completed his move from Arsenal this week, is expected to look for more permanent accommodation but is well-situated for the time being, seeing as United meet up at the Lowry before every match.

  • Confirmed: Sanchez for Man U and Henrikh for Arsenal

Confirmed: Sanchez for Man U and Henrikh for Arsenal

Arsenal and Manchester United have finalised their swap deal for Alexis Sanchez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The two Premier League clubs announced on Monday evening that both players had completed medicals and put pen-to-paper on contracts.

Sanchez has signed a three-year contract with Man United while Mkhitaryan has penned a four-year deal with Arsenal.

No money has changed hands between the two Premeir League rivals, with the deal a straight swap.

Alexis Sanchez is the man of the moment so to say and everyone is waiting to see him seal the transfer to Manchester United. While the waiting continues and possibility of sealing the deal draws closer, here are 10 things you need to know about Sanchez who as a young boy was nicknamed Dilla’

    1. Alexis Sanchez was born in Tocopilla in northern Chile, a city with 25,000 inhabitants. The main industries are fishing and mining, while it is known as the ‘city of energy’ because it generates electricity for the region. His brother Humberto said four years ago: ‘If Alexis wasn’t a footballer he would be working in the mines like most men around here.’
    2. His nickname as a boy was ‘Dilla’, which is short for the Spanish ‘ardilla’ meaning squirrel. Sanchez earned the name because it only took him seconds to climb trees or scale buildings to retrieve lost footballs during street games. He now has a street in Tocopilla named after him.
    3. Sanchez had humble beginnings. His father left shortly before he was born and his mother Martina sold fish to scrape a living. When Sanchez was playing for Cobreloa aged 16, Martina was fined $1,000 for selling fish without a licence. She could not afford it so Sanchez was put in touch with agent Fernando Felicevich, who bought his registration and settled the debt.
    4. He is quite literally a road runner. While at Udinese in Italy, he once drove into town for a shopping trip only to lose his keys. Instead of asking for a lift, he ran the four miles back home to get a spare set before running back to his car. No wonder his pace terrifies defenders!
    5. Despite signing for Manchester United and not their rivals City, Sanchez holds his former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola in high esteem. He once said of the City manager: ‘Guardiola made me feel like a Ferrari.’

Guardiola returned the compliment, once saying after Barcelona beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu: ‘Alexis has stolen my heart — our hearts. He has arrived here with the excitement of a kid and hasn’t let that go. His courage is remarkable.’

    1. He did not get his first pair of football boots until he was 15. The local mayor, who supported Sanchez’s team Arauco, gave him a pair of Reeboks. Before then, Sanchez’s mother borrowed boots for the games he played.

Sanchez said: ‘I was so excited that I wore them on the pavement, even though they had studs and were made for grass.’ Playing barefoot in the street is the secret to his explosive style, with Sanchez saying: ‘Playing barefoot gave me my style, running with little jumps, because I was dodging rocks.’

    1. Sanchez is Tocopilla’s very own Father Christmas. He has been known to give out presents while standing on the back of a truck with his friends at the local yuletide fair and has sent gifts and clothes to his old school.
    2. Aged just 17 when he made his international debut against New Zealand in 2006, Sanchez is the youngest player to be capped by Chile. He has since become the country’s all-time record scorer with 39 goals.
    3. Also moving to Manchester will be his dogs Atom and Humber. Sanchez has created an Instagram account for his pooches and has taken them to training. Whether Atom and Humber, are given their own banner at Old Trafford, as they were at the Emirates remains to be seen.
    4. Sanchez is no stranger to the big stage . . . so it is appropriate that he wants to be an actor when he retires. He said: ‘It’s why I try to make an effort in the ads I shoot. It’d be a dream to appear in the movies, either as a detective — you know, a smart chap, well-dressed, pistol, cool attitude — or as one of those lads who works at NASA and knows about everything.’
  • Giggs in race for Wales’ £300,000-a-year job

Giggs in race for Wales’ £300,000-a-year job

Ryan Giggs was formally interviewed for the vacant Wales job on Friday morning as the Manchester United legend looks to take his first steps in management.

Chris Coleman left the role in November after Wales failed to qualify for this summer’s World Cup and FAW officials are keen to make a swift appointment – before the draw for the Nations League on January 24.

Giggs has strong support from with the squad due to his esteemed playing career and also at board level at the Welsh FA due to his high profile and application to coaching badges.

The new Wales manager will be offered an annual salary of around £300,000, significantly reduced terms from predecessor Chris Coleman due to the country’s failure to qualify for the World Cup in Russia. Coleman took home £500,000 a year after renegotiating his deal following Euro 2016.

Craig Bellamy has also been in contention for the post but it is unclear whether the former Manchester City and Liverpool striker would be willing to work with Osian Roberts, Coleman’s assistant, and that may count against him.

Giggs has made no secret of his desire to land a No 1 job and was previously interviewed by Swansea City.

The 44-year-old worked under David Moyes at United before taking charge of four games on an interim basis after the Scot’s sacking.

He was assistant to Louis van Gaal for two years before parting ways with United following Jose Mourinho’s arrival in 2016.

Giggs is thought to have backing by some former players in his quest for the Wales job and spoke about his interest last month.

‘Of course I’m interested,’ he said. ‘I’ve played for Wales and I’ve said that I want to go back into coaching. Obviously that is one of the top jobs.’

Former Wales international Carl Robinson, currently Vancouver Whitecaps head coach, has also been under consideration having been urged to apply for the job by Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale. Robinson was something of a mentor to both of Wales’s two major players when they emerged onto the international scene.
