  • 2019: MASSOB, APGA fight over Bianca Ojukwu

The proscribed Movement of the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Biafran Independent Movement (BIM), have passed a vote of no confidence on the leadership of All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA over the conduct of Anambra South Senatorial primaries.

MASSOB has been outlawed by the Federal Government over acts of terrorism.

The group also warned politicians to desist from using Ojukwu’s pictures for political campaigns, adding that seven days ultimatum had been issued to those having his pictures on their vehicles for politics to either remove them.

The no confidence vote was passed at a joint meeting of the two groups in Owerri on Monday, where the founder and leader of the proscribed group, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, presided over the meeting.

The meeting, which recorded large attendance of MASSOB and BIM members across the state, resolved that APGA erred in the conduct of the primaries.

The group claimed that Mrs Bianca Ojukwu, wife of late Biafran warlord, Odumegwu Ojukwu, was unjustly denied Anambra South Senatorial ticket.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bianca Ojukwu lost the contest to Nicolas Ukachukwu.

However, Uwazuruike, in the resolution, said Bianca Ojukwu merited party automatic ticket for the position, going by the antecedents and influence of late Ojukwu who was the leader of the party while alive.

“Why can’t the wife of our leader get automatic ticket when other aspirants from other two zones got automatic tickets.

“APGA does not want any member of Ojukwu’s family to be carried along but they want to win election with Ojukwu’s picture; even Ojukwu’s son contested earlier through the party’s platform but failed,” he said.

“We are talking about the founder and former leader of the party; Ojukwu is the symbol of the party and he should be respected for that even in death.

“APGA has derailed and we will not support the party for any position in Igbo land because our late leader has been humiliated and insulted and we will stand to protect his integrity,” he said.

He said that APGA had been hijacked by cabals who now used the party for money-making venture, adding that the party would not win election in 2019.

Reacting, National Director of Publicity of the party Ifeatu Okoye told NAN that the party was democratic in handling its affairs.

He said APGA was doing everything possible to ensure that popular aspirants emerged.

Okoye said the decision of MASSOB and BIM would not affect their chances of winning election.

He further said a committee had been set up to look into what played out in Binca Ojukwu’s election.

  • BIM/MASSOB demand unconditional release of members in police custody

The leadership of Biafra Independent Movement (BIM)/ Movement for the Actualization of Biafra (MASSOB) has called for the unconditional release of members of the group numbering over 100 being detained by the Abia State Police Command in their facilities across the state.

BIM/MASSOB leadership claimed that their members were arrested on the orders of the State Commissioner of Police, Anthony Ogbizi whom they accused of doing everything within his power to clamp down on the group.

It was learnt that BIM/MASSOB group were holding a peaceful protest to mark the 18thyear anniversary of the re-declaration of Biafra and hoisting of their flag at No.175 Faulks road in Aba the commercial nerve of the state.

Spokesman of the group, Frederick Onyenaucheya, leader of BIM/MASSOB Abia South flanked by Chief Obi Anyaogu (leader Abia Central) and Pastor Evans Okoronkwo (Abia North MASSOB/BIM leader) in a press conference claimed that they were holding peaceful rally to mark this year’s anniversary at Umuorieoma on the Osisioma axis of the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway when policemen in over 20 Hilux vans arrived the location.

Onyenaucheya who berated the police for the “uncivilized manner” at which they attacked “unarmed and harmless BIM/MASSOB members” alleged that some of their members are at the time of this report receiving medical treatments in various hospitals and clinics in Aba due to the injuries that they sustained as a result of police manhandling while spreading teargas canisters at them.

The leader of the group who also claimed that the police were shooting sporadically into the air also feared that some of the group’s members that they were yet to be seen could have sustained gunshot injuries.

Onyenaucheya who said that they cannot be cowed by the actions of the police called for the immediate and unconditional release of their members said to be in police custody.

The members of the group stated that they would continue to agitate peacefully for the restoration of Biafra regardless of the threats from police and other security agencies in the state.

Both the Commissioner of Police CP Anthony Ogbizi and spokesman of the Abia State Command could not be reached for comments, but a senior police officer of the command confirmed the arrest of the agitators.

According to the police personnel, who pleaded not to be mentioned in print said that the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and actions to be taken.

The source who went ahead to deny the arrest of 100 BIM/MASOOB members said that only 46members of the group until the time of filing this report were in their custody.

The sources told our reporter that the police in Aba recovered Biafra Identity Cards bearing Ralph Uwazuruike’s picture, Biafra Muffler, face caps and military Camouflages and other insignias.

The source who maintained that the police acted in the interest of the public denied any manhandling of the pro-Biafra agitators, claiming that there was no way a large number of the group could be on the expressway protesting without obstructing movement of people and vehicles on the road.

The source said that the members of the pro-Biafra group would be arraigned in court as soon as investigation into the matter was concluded.

  • Police disrupt MASSOB march, arrest members in Ebonyi

The Police in Ebonyi state, assisted by other security agencies on Tuesday arrested scores of members of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB in Abakaliki the Ebonyi state capital who were on a peaceful march round major streets of the city.

The group had earlier announced the event through the media and social media channels in the country. It said it is to commemorate the declaration of Biafran Republic by its leader, Ralph Uwazuruike.

But, security agencies in the state accosted them along Nkaliki road as they started the peaceful march, sprayed teargas on them and arrested some of them, it was gathered.

The Army, Department of State Security, DSS and the Police carried out the joint operation.

Commander of Nigerian Millitary Cantonment in Nkwegu, Col S. O. Sadiq confirmed the participation of the Army in the incident and arrests. He added that all the arrested persons were handed over to the police.

He explained that MASSOB did not notify security agencies in the state of the event in writing which necessitated the action to stop them by security agencies.

Police Spokesman in the state, Loveth Odah confirmed the incident to our reporter but could not give the actual number of persons arrested.

“I don’t have the details of the actual number of persons arrested right now, when I get the full details I will let you know” she said.

MASSOB: troops have raided our office in Ebonyi

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB)/Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) have condemned the alleged invasion and destruction of its office at Onueke in Ezza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State by troops of Operation Python Dance II.

The Ebonyi Central MASSOB/BIM Leader Gideon Iloke told reporters yesterday that scores of solders raided the organisation’s Onueke office at the weekend.

He said the invaders allegedly destroyed flags, emblems and other Biafra items and took away other valuables belonging to the group.

Iloke, who described the attack as wicked and callous, maintained that MASSOB was committed to the realisation of Biafra independence.

The MASSOB leader said no amount of intimidation from the Army or any other quarters would stop the organisation from pursuing its agenda.

He said: “Last weekend, the enemies of Biafra attacked our office at Onueke, chased away our members, destroyed our flags and carted away other valuables. Everybody knows that MASSOB/BIM under the leadership of Chief Raph Uwazuruke is non-violent in its approach to the agitation for the realisation of Biafra independence.

“Therefore, what was the reason for attacking our office? They should know that even though they attacked our office and scattered our men, I want them to know that MASSOB/BIM is everywhere in the world; no force is capable of killing all of us. Biafra has come to stay.”

Iloke urged leadership of Ohaeze Ndigbo, under the chairmanship of Chief Nnia Nwodo, to protect Ndigbo from what he called the calculated onslaught of the military against pro-Biafra agitators.

The MASSOB leader said this had been disguised as a fight against criminality in the zone.

He added that if Ndigbo leaders failed to protect pro-Biafra agitators against attacks from the security agencies, the group may be forced to take actions, “no matter how extreme, to protect ourselves”.

Iloke also urged the international community to beam its light on the activities of the military in the Southeast, especially in its Operation Python Dance II.

According to him, the activities of solders in the zone do not conform to the rules of engagement anywhere in the world.

Police spokesman Loveth Oda, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said she was not aware of the incident.

“I am not even aware that they have an office in Ebonyi,” she said.

The spokesman of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu, Col. Sagir Musa, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

  • MASSOB: Kanu remains ‘Biafra hero’ dead or alive

MASSOB: Kanu remains ‘Biafra hero’ dead or alive

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign state of Biafra (MASSOB) said yesterday the missing leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is a true hero of Biafra, even dead or alive.

MASSOB described Kanu as a determined man who was destined for the actualisation of Biafra.

In a statement posted by its leader, Uchenna Madu, MASSOBB said: “Kanu does not pose any danger to Nigeria’s existence; the problem that poses a dangerous extinction to Nigeria’s existence is Hausa/Fulani domination of Nigeria over the general interest of other ethnic nationalities.”

MASSOB said Kanu had proven to be a loved figure for championing the self-determination struggle for the actualisation and restoration of Biafra.

  • Biafra: The fire this time

Aldous Huxley, a famous English writer and philosopher once said: “That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history has to teach.” In the last few days, it has become increasingly clear that the group known as the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and Nnamdi Kanu, their “supreme leader”, are on a mission to justify these words by all means. The federal government is also not absolved in this regard – a history of over-reaction and high handedness on its part also looks set to repeat itself and tip the scales in favour of the carnage that IPOB group seeks.

For a couple of years now, Kanu has been a thorn in the side of the Nigerian government. His hate speech and threat against the Nigerian state including ordinary Nigerians had compelled the government to order his arrest and prosecution for various offences, including treason. His arrest led to a protracted period of detention. When he was finally released on bail, it was on clear and stringent conditions that he apparently left behind in the courtroom.

Now, having incited his supporters to one mindless act after another, the culmination of their incendiary actions and remarks and the high-handed response of agents of the government, have become a threat to the frail stability of multiple inter-ethnic locations across the country. One almost feels sorry for the government that has to check excessive reactions of its agents in the face of unbridled provocation by the IPOB cohort as it happened in Abia State last week.

Though the skirmish in Abia State was regrettable, the crass disregard for civil decency that has been exhibited by Kanu and his followers from the onset has been astounding. All along, his message has veered so much off-course of the traditional Igbo marginalisation theory, to the extent that even Ralph Uwazuruike, the man who claimed to have recruited him into the original Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has repeatedly condemned and washed his hands off Kanu. It is also of great concern that the broadcasts that were personally made by Kanu on the platform of his foreign domiciled Radio Biafra, were, indeed, not seeking to promote Igbo interests but rather, pandered to ethnic division and hatred of the other tribes in Nigeria.

While this balderdash was going on, surprisingly, seemingly moderate Igbos, including Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, had thought that they could ignore Kanu’s treasonable excesses by dismissing his actions as immature and eccentric. In the same vein, these moderate Igbos had been riding on the coat tails of IPOB’s message of hate, to reiterate the Igbo marginalisation mantra.

For a people whose enterprising nature and economic dexterity is readily recognised anywhere in the land, and demonstrated through repeated appointments into sensitive areas of government including positions at the head of the military, in the recent past, the argument of marginalisation just cannot hold sway. That no Igbo president has emerged since the civil war, is directly traceable to the efforts to secure the position through strong-arm tactics and the same threats as we see today, instead of the politics of charm and alliances that everyone else is busy consummating.

In an interview with Al Jazeera after his release on bail, Kanu was quoted as saying: “We have one thing in common, all of us that believe in Biafra, one thing we have in common, a pathological hatred for Nigeria. I cannot begin to put into words how much I hate Nigeria”. The question is: If Kanu detests the country so much, why has he not renounced his citizenship?

Albert Einstein, arguably one of the most regarded scientists in history, a German-born Jew renounced his German citizenship at a time when German ideals were incompatible with his beliefs. That, surely, is the civilised thing to do instead of rousing vulnerable youths in the name of hatred to destabilise the peace of other Nigerians, including well-meaning Igbos who will be caught up in any fighting that might result from the irresponsibility of a few bigots.

It is apparent that Kanu has constituted a law unto himself. Images of shabbily clad, desperate young men dubbed “Biafran Security Forces” being ‘inspected’ by Kanu are routine online. His supporters have attacked military checkpoints with crude tools, burnt a police station and hunted for northerners who were marked for death by them. Kanu is also seen in a separate video urging his supporters to “burn down” Nigeria if he gets re-arrested, and this, after brazenly breaching the terms of his bail. Right now, he does not seem like one who will report to court on the next date for hearing of his case.

It should be noted too that the Army itself has been caught on camera mistreating members of the group in an inexcusable act of ruthlessness. Although the military high command has launched investigation into this detestable act, it goes to show the excesses of some public officials in their behavioural pattern against the same public they are paid to protect. And as they say, two wrongs can never make a right.

Now, the questions some need to ask themselves is: Is there any justification for supporting, in public or private, such a divisive figure as Kanu? And for those who will not openly condemn him for what he has become, what are they waiting for?

Surely, there is no middle ground between hate and legitimate efforts to protect people’s interests within a civilised society. Right now, with his utterances, Kanu is not towing the path of Mandela or even Odumegwu Ojukwu, as he would want people to believe. Definitely, he is moving towards a warped Igbo supremacy quest modelled after Adolf Hitler, without the brains, wit or might, to execute it. The outrageous claims of possessing ‘nuclear weapons’ can only be an indication of a mentally challenged individual, which could spell greater doom for all those who follow his path.

It is a big relief that the government has been able to douse the flames of reprisal attacks against Igbos in Jos for the hunting of northerners in the east by Kanu and his cohorts. However, this fragile peace is subject to puncture by even the slightest whim of these unstable young men who are unable to grasp the full consequences of their actions.

It is worth a reminder that the horrors of the Nigerian Civil War or Biafra War, which are still etched in the sub-conscious of many of the leaders of the South-east, are real and should never be revisited. As for the government, the time has come for careful diplomacy in handling Kanu by gently coaxing him to talks with the Igbo leadership. This is so because his acts are fast crossing the threshold of decency and common sense.

Already, the military has declared IPOB a militant terrorist organisation, while at the same time, the committee of South-east governors and the leadership of the Ohanaeze, the pan-Igbo socio-cultural group proscribed the group – all with good reasons. Illegal formation of parallel security forces not recognised by the state, attacking state security forces, and hunting down innocent people definitely justify these actions. It is sad, but the Igbo leaders’ action came a little too late because the leaders had all along been too reluctant to decide on what to do. Hopefully the greater interests of the Igbo people should now prevail.

It is, however, unfortunate that there are claims of deaths from the hands of the military in Kanu’s camp. If it is true, it is should be properly investigated. While fighting hate and indecency, we should not descend into the same ugly depth as the defaulters. It is hoped that the right thing is done in all quarters, to avoid a repeat of past horrors. Nigeria needs peace, but surely, not the peace of the graveyard.

  • National security: Army warns IPOB, MASSOB, others

The army yesterday told agitators in the Southeast to keep the peace.

It vowed to deal with any act capable of breaching the peace of the region.

It mentioned no one or group by name, but the Nnamdi Kanu-led Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) have been holding rallies to demand a Republic of Biafra.

The IPOB has also threatened to stop the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State from taking place.

But the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, speaking yesterday on the forthcoming second phase of Exercise Egwu Eke II (Python Dance II) in the geo-political zone, said on no account would kidnapping, cultism, violent agitations, theft of weapons, armed banditry and other security challenges which have become a daily phenomenon in the area be condoned henceforth.

The military operation is scheduled to commence on September 15, according to Buratai who spoke through the Chief of Training and Operations, Nigerian Army Headquarters, Major General David Ahmadu.

It will run for a month and involve raids, cordon and search, anti-kidnapping drills, road blocks, check points and show of force, as well as humanitarian activities such as medical outreach.

Buratai said Exercise EGWU EKE II has become expedient in view of  ”the mindless assassinations (even in religious places), attack on security personnel, theft of weapons, armed banditry, kidnapping, cultism and  violent agitations, as well as other security challenges that have recently become prevalent in the South Eastern part of the country.”

He added: “The need for troops to be exercised, refreshed and imbibe the requisite skills to cope with these emerging security challenges within the 82 Division Area of Responsibility in aid of civil authority calls for this exercise.

“Also, in actualizing the COAS vision, which is “To have a Professionally Responsive NA in the Discharge of its Constitutional Roles”, accentuates the call for the conduct of this exercise in conjunction with other security agencies.

“This operation will be conducted with the involvement of other security agencies such as Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.  “It will also afford the troops an opportunity to effectively checkmate the despicable activities of the marauding criminals perpetrating criminal acts in the region and its environs.

“Additionally, OPERATION EGWU EKE II is also conceptualized to transit into real time operations thereby fulfilling both training and operations objectives of sharpening operational skills of personnel as well as providing an avenue to conduct operations against violent criminals and agitators when called upon. As precursor to a peaceful ember period and yuletide, provision has already been made for the smooth conduct of the operation.

“Operation EGWU EKE II will be unique with the establishment of Brigade Headquarters in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States. Emphasis will be placed on raids, cordon and search operations, anti-kidnapping drills, road blocks, check points and show of force, as well as humanitarian activities such as medical outreach.

“It is pertinent to mention that Operation EGWU EKE II is set to be another epoch making exercise that would make the nation proud of the Nigerian Army’s determination at sustaining its constitutional role of defending the territorial integrity of the nation as well as its commitment to aid the civil authority to bring about peace and security in the south eastern part of our dear country.

“In this regard, members of the public especially the residents of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States are enjoined not to panic as their safety and well-being is guaranteed at all times. The general public is requested to remain vigilant and be security conscious, as suspected criminals may be fleeing from military operations in these areas and finding safe haven amidst our communities.”

Army warns IPOB, MASSOB, others against violent agitation

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Tukur Buratai on friday warned members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and other groups and individuals in the Southeast against any action capable of breaching the peace of the region.

Addressing a press conference at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, the Army Chief said the warning has become necessary as the military commenced the second phase of Exercise Egwu Eke II (Python Dance II) by September 15.

General Buratai whose address was presented by the Chief of Training and Operations, Nigerian Army Headquarters, Major General David Ahmadu, said no stone would be left unturned to tackle the problems of kidnapping, cultism, violent agitations, theft of weapons, armed banditry and other security challenges which had become a daily phenomenon in the southeast of the country.

He warned would-be trouble-makers that there would be no hiding place for them in the southeastern states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo as the operations would be carried out by the military, the Department of State Security, DSS, the Nigerian Police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The Army Chief said the operations which he tagged a show of force would last between September 15 and October 14, 2017 and enjoined the people of the southeast not to panic as a result of the exercise.

General Buratai said: “As you are all aware, the Nigerian Army is constantly carrying out training activities for its personnel in line with its constitutional role in aid of civil authority. More so, Exercise EGWU EKE II has become more expedient due to the mindless assassinations (even in religious places), attack on security personnel, theft of weapons, armed banditry, kidnapping, cultism and violent agitations, as well as other security challenges that have recently become prevalent in the South Eastern part of the country.

“The need for troops to be exercised, refreshed and imbibe the requisite skills to cope with these emerging security challenges within the 82 Division Area of Responsibility in aid of civil authority calls for this exercise. “The public is also reminded to report any suspicious activity or movement to the nearest military formation or other security agencies for prompt action. In order to ensure cordial civil-military relations, we shall make contact phone numbers of all Brigade Commanders public in addition to the Nigerian Army short code Information and Call Centre 193.”

While General Buratai urged the people to go about their normal businesses without fear, he enjoined the media as partners in progress to educate and enlighten the people about the operation.

  • MASSOB leader accused of spreading falsehood

MASSOB leader accused of spreading falsehood

The Buhari Media Support Group (BMSG) on Tuesday accused the leader of the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike of deliberately spreading a falsehood that the Buhari administration was marginalizing the South-Eastern part of the country.

The group in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja said no government in Nigeria has shown more determination to develop the South-East like the determination so far shown by the Buhari government.

The statement signed by the Chairman of the group, Austin Braimoh and Secretary, Chief Cassidy Madueke, the group said that Uwazuruike’s comments have proven that “he has been a master of deceit all the years that he has operated as the leader of MASSOB”.

“We have observed the churlish, but apparently unsuccessful attempts by some individuals to confuse unsuspecting Nigerians with deliberately spawned narratives casting Buhari’s administration as one with scant regards for the development of the South-East geo-political zone and the equitable consideration of the people of that region in political appointments and other political opportunities.

“The best way to treat characters like Uwazuruike is to totally disregard his voice of falsehood and propaganda since it has become evident that the Buhari administration means well for the South East”.

The group described Uwazuruike’s comments as delusional and unfounded as the Buhari administration has made the South East region a priority in its appointment and development agenda.

It said three prominent Ministries which include Foreign Affairs, Trade and Investment as well as Labour are being manned by Ministers from the South Eastern part of the country.

The group noted that in the past, very few governments made infrastructural development across the country a priority but that the present administration has not just shown the political will to correct that deficit, but has put its money where its mouth is by beginning unprecedented infrastructural development projects across the nation.

BMSG further observed that the Buhari administration has commenced the construction, maintenance and reconstruction of major roads networks in the South-East which were abandoned over the years.

Apart from the road projects, the group said that the construction of the second Niger Bridge which was abandoned by previous administrations has commenced.

“Besides, we are all witnesses to the affirmative action taken by the President in diffusing the growing tension over the matter of ill-advised quit notice by a group of Arewa youths to the Igbos.

“The President was characteristically assertive in the management of the growing imbroglio which threatened the very existence of the country at that time,” BMSG said.

The group advised Nigerians to be cautious of divisive personalities who are in the business of fueling hatred and division along ethnic and religious divides, noting that President Buhari is committed to a united Nigeria.
