  • FUOye matriculates 3,000

    The Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), at the weekend, matriculated 3,000 students with a warning against them joining unregistered and anti-social organisations.

    The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, said the number of students seeking admission into the institution had doubled.

    The FUOYE boss said he was delighted to preside over the sixth matriculation, which was his first since taking office.

    He described the number of matriculating students as the highest since the university’s establishment in 2012.

    Soremekun added that the management was making efforts to provide more hostels, lecture theatres, laboratories, medical, water and alternative power supply to make teaching, learning and research more conducive.

    The VC said the management had concluded arrangements to establish a revenue board to supervise business ventures, such as bakery, guest house, laundry services, postgraduate school, distance learning, among others.

  • ABUAD matriculates 1,491

    ABUAD matriculates 1,491

    Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) has matriculated 1,491 students for the 2016/2017 academic session.

    Vice Chancellor Prof Michael Ajisafe said the university has made giant strides since its opening on January 4, 2010.

    He said the National Universities Commission (NUC) described ABUAD as “the pride of education system in Nigeria”.

    The VC urged the freshmen to have vision, remain focused and take their studies “like a long distance runner who starts his race early”.

    The highlight of the ceremony was the administration of the matriculation oath by the Registrar, Lady Christie Oluborode.

    Former House of Representatives member Patrick Obahiagbon, popularly known as Igodomigodo, was among parents who attended the ceremony.

    The former lawmaker, who is renowned for his expression in English language, was resplendent in an outlandish Benin traditional dress complemented with a long bead.

    Many parents, students and other admirers took pictures with Obahiagbon, whose son, Oghogho Patrick, was admitted to study International Relations and Diplomacy.

    Obahiagbon said he was attracted to ABUAD by quality education on offer and that the university has raised the bar in tertiary education in Nigeria.

  • PTI matriculates 1,507

    A total of 1,507 took the matriculation oath of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun in Delta State for the 2015/2016 academic session.

    The Principal/Chief Executive of the institution, Mr. Avuakporeta Orukele, said they were the ones admitted out of the 6,413 who applied to pursue National Diploma ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) and certificate programmes.

    Orukele the new students to surpass the high academic standard set by their predecessors in the 40-year-old institution.

    He said: “It is my hope that as you are all gathered here this morning, you all will also assemble here for the convocation at the end of your career. However, this cannot be achieved by a mere wishful “Amen”.

    “According to Shalee Alexis, ‘Success does not come by wishing and hoping but hard work, smart work and enthusiasm’. You must work very hard to attain it ,” he said.

     

  • UNN matriculates sandwich students

    The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has matriculated over 800 students for its sandwich programme. The event held on Saturday on the main campus.

    The Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Benjamin Ozumba, represented by the Director of Sandwich Programme, Prof Julia Kogu, urged the students to aim for excellence, saying the event marked the beginning of their academic journey in the school.

    Prof Kogu urged the students to be resilient and take pragmatic approach to their studies, saying the management had put measures in place to ensure smooth running of the programme. She advised the sandwich students to compete with their counterpart running regular academic programme, noting that the school maintained the same syllabus for all students.

    A senior administrator in Students’ Affairs Unit, Mrs Uloma Anosike, said the sandwich programme would not be run concurrently with the regular programme, saying: “We have arranged the school programmes in a way that, the regular students will vacate the hostels before their counterparts in sandwich resume session.”

    A member of teaching staff of the Faculty of Education, Mr E. Eleke, advised the freshers to use the occasion of their matriculation to maximise their academic strength.

    Eleke said: “People must understand that sandwich is not for the elderly only but also for people who could not get admission to into regular programme.”

    A matriculating student in Guardian and Counselling Department, Sunday Emmanuel, said:” “I am happy being admitted into UNN. I will study hard to ensure that I finish the programme with good grade.”

    UNICAL matriculates 6,395

    The University of Calabar (UNICAL), last week, matriculated freshers into its full-time programmes. No fewer than 6,395 students took the oath at a ceremony held at the school pavilion.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof James Epoke, congratulated the students on scaling through the admission hurdles. He said more than 25,000 applicants chose the university as their first choice during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), but 12,340 scored above 180 to qualify in JAMB and were invited for the attitude test, through which 6,395 candidates were admitted,”

    Epoke reminded the freshers of task ahead of them, advising them to abide by the school rules and regulation.

    He said: “It is a great challenge to all of you, who have been given admission, to live up to expectation and defend your admission by working hard and passing your examinations very well. You are expected to keep to the rules and regulations of the school, bearing in mind that ignorance is no excuse for defaulters.”

    He said students must have 75 per cent lecture attendance to be allowed to write examination, stressing that his administration has zero tolerance for examination malpractice and vices that could tarnish the image of the school.

    Mr Moses Abang, Registrar, enjoined the freshmen to utilise make good use of the school library to equip themselves academically. He said the management had provided conducive environment for the students to excel in their studies.

    Highpoint was presentation of the freshers by deans of faculties for the oath.

    Janeth Ifejirika, who was admitted into Department of Economics, could not conceal her joy, pledging to abide by the oath of matriculation.

    The attraction at event was musical performance by the school music band, which entertained the freshers and their family members.

     

  • Tansian varsity matriculates 201

    It was a joyous atmosphere at the Tansian University in Umunya in Anambra State when the institution’s held its matriculation. Over 200 freshers took the oath at the ceremony held at the university permanent site.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Chima Iwuchukwu, said the institution has zero tolerance for indolence and criminal vices, urging the freshers to face their studies.

    Prof Iwuchukwu, whose speech was titled: The new down, advised the students to pursue academic excellence and imbibe moral values, noting that the university would only issue its certificates to students found worthy in character.

    His words: “We are striving to give you the best education to make you compete globally and create wealth. For this reason, we have introduced entrepreneurship course, religious subjects and social studies to develop your creativity and groom you to be morally-upright individuals, who can compete successfully in any circumstances you may find yourselves.”

    The VC stressed that the school frowned at vices, such as hooliganism, cultism, indecent dressing and examination malpractice, advising them to approach the Dean of Students’ Affairs if they needed advice on their studies.

    The chancellor, Prof John Bosco Akam, said he was satisfied on the ongoing developmental project in the school, stressing that they were in line with the objectives of the institution’s founders.

    In similar vein, the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) in Uli held its 15th matriculation for students admitted into regular and post-graduate programmes.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Fidelis Okafor, advised the students to be of good character and shun act that could make them lose the admission. The VC also urged the students to study hard for excellence, saying they must not allow themselves to be distracted by the social activities on the campus.

    Prof Okafor said: “Bear in mind that the university’s regulation does not allow students to stay beyond three years after their expected year of graduation. This is why you must face your studies for you to graduate on time. You must exercise self-control and self-discipline.”

    Cultism, he said, ruins lives, advising the students not to render their parents’ efforts useless by joining outlawed groups. He said any student caught for cultism would be expelled immediately.

    NTA college matriculates 236

    The Nigeria Television College, Jos, has conducted the oath of matriculation to its 236 new students for a degree programme for the 2014/2015 academic session.

    The new students cut across various fields of journalism including: Television Journalism, Television Production and Television Engineering. Thirty eight of the students are in 100 level, while other 198 are 200-level direct entry students respectively.

    The institution popularly known as TV College is a professional training institution run by the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) for the training of broadcast journalists. At the inception, the college The which is affiliated to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, used to be known as ‘NTA Training Centre’ where workers in the organisation were trained. It was however expanded to admit fresh secondary school leavers for a full degree program; even though the college still serves its mandate of training and retraining NTA staff.

    The college Ag.Rector Halima Bewell said the 31 year-old college offers both theory and practical knowledge to make students have an edge.

    “What the college offers is not just academic theories, but also relevant practical and professional knowhow that will make you industry-ready for the broadcast world. We will therefore try our best within available financial ambience to provide the necessary equipment and conducive environment for you to be creatively engaged.

    Let me note that the broadcast industry is a very demanding one and the competitiveness is growing by the day. But I am proud to announce to you that our students have been doing us proud by winning laurels at local and international competitions,” Bewell added.

    She admonished them to abide by the oath they took. She thanked ABU Vice-Chancellor

    Bewell expressed appreciation to ABU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Kayode Omojuwa,  and head of department Mass Communications, Mallam  Rabiu Ismaila and others top principals of the university.

    One of the new students Pam Musa, a journalist in Jos said: “This is a rear privilege, I will maximize the opportunity because it is my desire to acquire a degree in Journalism and here I am. So I shall place much value on this opportunity”

    Another student, Miss Jamila Michael, also had this to say:  “To me this is a dream come true. I had tried twice in the past but was not lucky to get admission. I decided to try it again and I am here already, so I will not play with this opportunity for granted.”

  • OAU matriculates pioneer ODL students

    The pioneer set of the Obafemi Awolowo University’s Centre for Distance Learning (OAUCDL) took the matriculation oath of the university with assurances that they would receive top quality education online.

    The OAU is one of the universities accredited by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) to operate the Open Distance Learning (ODL) mode of education.

    The students, numbering over 200, were admitted to study Nursing and Accounting.

    The Vice Chancellor, Prof Bamitale Omole, congratulated the students for being the first set to enrol for the university’s ODL mode of education, which has been designed to fully function on the e-learning platform.

    The students will receive all their lectures on customised tablets (Vigitab) that have been pre-loaded with various learning resources for them.

    Assuring the students of the worth of the programme at the matriculation which held at the Oduduwa Hall, OAU, Omole, said: “You have the singular honour of being the first set of students in our eLearning programme, the first of its type in Nigeria. I congratulate you on being pioneers of the eLearning revolution in the country. I want to assure you that your distance learning mode of admission does not in any way imply inferiority in status, compared to our conventional students, either in terms of lecture delivery or the certificates you receive at the end of your programmes.

    “Our university guards jealously the integrity of its degrees and diplomas whether obtained in the conventional or distance learning mode. Hence your various curricula have gone through the usual high standards of excellence of the University Senate for which Obafemi Awolowo University is well known.”

    The Director, Centre for Distance Learning, Prof Bode Asubiojo, said the students would find their tablets function as their classrooms irrespective of their locations.

    “This development is the first of its kind in Nigeria and we are pleased with it. We have replicated the classroom experience on a tablet device for students. For the first time, students can receive lectures, submit assignments, participate in forums, take quizzes, and even rewind their lectures, all from the comfort of their homes, offices or wherever they may be in Nigeria or abroad,” he said.

    The eLearning solution is powered by a Learning Management System (VigiLearn) that allows students to receive lectures, submit assignments, discuss with their classmates, participate in group discussions and get graded without being physically within the four walls of a lecture room. The Vigitab is specifically built for Nigeria and allow for users to continue to study and receive lectures with limited internet connection. Asubiojo said with the online platform, many more Nigerians would be able to access university education.

    “Our primary charge at the Centre for Distance Learning of ObafemiAwolowo University is to provide quality education to the teeming number of Nigerian youths who possess the prerequisite qualifications for entry to Nigerian Universities but are denied admission owing to inadequate facilities on campus and the working class who are desirous of pursuing undergraduate and post graduate programmes whilst still retaining their jobs,” he said.

  • Crawford varsity matriculates 2nd PG set

    Crawford University, Igbesa Ogun State has sworn in its second set of Post-Graduate students.

    Speaking at the matriculation held at the university’s multi-purpose hall, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Samson Ayanlaja, congratulated the 68 students and urged them to live up to the university’s high academic standard.

    “Examination malpractice would not be condoned.  You must attend classes up to 70 per cent of the total number of classes; all assignments must be expertly completed; and we expect a high level of morality, honesty, loyalty in the university,” he said.

    Challenging them to develop novel economic principles and management theories, he explained that the MBA programme has options and is affiliated with the Galilee International Management Institute in Israel where students offering International Business would take some modules of their study before the end of their programme.

    All together, he said that there are 19 students for the MBA programme, eight for MSc Economics, 22 for MSc Business Administration, five for PGD in Business Administration, eight for MSc Accounting and six for PGD Accounting.

     

  • Salem varsity matriculates 373 students

    It was a huge crowd that witnessed the seventh matriculation of Salem University last Saturday.

    In his address, the Vice- Chancellor of the university, Prof Joseph Adeola Fuwape, congratulated the 373 students admitted into the three colleges of the university.

    He disclosed that though they passed the stringent admission process prescribed by the university, they have been admitted as work in progress.  However, at the end of their programme, they would be released as positive change agents.

    The Vice-Chancellor said for them to become global leaders and change agents that God has designed them to be, they must be focused and strive for distinction in their programmes of study.

    He urged them to shun distractions, not be complacent and have a strong desire to attain excellence, be determined and diligent to be what God has destined them to be.

    He noted that the university would continue to set out the modalities to groom them to become global leaders and will inculcate in them the core values of godliness, confidence, mental empowerment, integrity, accountability, diligence and resourcefulness, sense of priority and synergy.

    He said that all the university’s programme had been fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

    He also said Salem University had been recognized as the Best Web Technology Management institution in Kogi State in 2012 and the best Information Communication Technology (ICT)-driven university with the best webometric ranking in Kogi state in 2013.

    He expressed his appreciation to the Chancellor, Archbishop Dr. Sam Amaga, for his support to the university, and the members of the Governing Council, Board of Trustees, and others who have supported the vision of the university.

    He charged the students to always remember they are on a mission and cannot afford to fail.
