  • IMT matriculates 5,000

    The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, has held its 32nd matriculation at the Jeremiah Useni Sports Complex.

    In her lecture titled: “Youth Employment through Education and Good Governance,” Chief of Staff to the Enugu State Government, Mrs Ifeoma Nwaobodom, who represented Governor Sullivan Chime, said education was the key to unlock potentials of youths. She said education was useful in ensuring political stability and fostering understanding among people of diverse cultures and belief.

    She urged the freshers to focus on their studies. According to her, education is the best way to empower themselves for the future.

    The Rector, Prof Mike Iloeje, noted that the institute had improved its academic standard and is prepared to attain global best practices. He urged the students to take their academics serious, saying it was their primary objective as students.

    The Public Relations Officer, Dr  Ifeanyi Ojobor, urged the freshers to study hard and make better grades.

    President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Kingsley Isiani, also encouraged the freshers to study hard and be good ambassadors of the institution.

    Students at the programme advised the freshers to abide by the rules and regulation guiding the institution.

    College matriculates 140

    The Topmost College of Education (TOPCOED), Ipaja/Agbado, Lagos has matriculated the fourth set of students admitted for the National Certificate in Education (NCE).

    Its Provost, Dr Oluwafunmilayo Odunayo, said the institution has approval of the National Council for Colleges of Education, its regulatory body, to run 14 full-time programmes.

    Addressing the fresh students, she urged them to be responsible, live by exemple, and avoid social vices as the management will not tolerate such.

    She said the institution was set up to produce well-grounded and ICT-compliant teachers and administrators, as well as provide vocational training, which would earn them additional certificate of entrepreneurship at the completion of their programmes.

    Chairman of the college, Mr Wale Odunayo, said the institution’s journey started in 1990 when it acquired five acres of land in the Ipaja/Agbado neinbourhood.

    He said the management’s next plan is the establishment of a university of education and urged the host community to cooperate with the management to ensure its sustenance.

    “The college belongs to everybody; it is not a personal property. Everyone is entitled to formal education. Many children are roaming the streets waiting to pass UTME and secure admission into university; but this is a great opportunity we are presenting to them. Within three years, they would have completed their NCE programme and proceeded to the university without having to sit for UTME every other year,” he said.

    He also urged school owners to take advantage of the institution by sending their teachers to obtain Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), which automatically qualifies them as professional teachers following a licence granted TOPCOED by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to offer the programme.

    “There is a new law by TRCN to school owners that any teacher found in the classroom without having NCE or PGDE should be prohibited while the school owners may also be prosecuted.

    MOCPED matriculates 470 NCE students

    Four hundred and seventy new students of the Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED) Noforija, Epe, Lagos took the oath of matriculation for the regular NCE programme at the school premises Wednesday last week.

    The ceremony, which held at the college main auditorium was to admit the new students into the institution for the 2013 /2014 academic session.

    The Provost, Prof. Olu Akeusola, warned the new students to steer off anti-social acts or face sanctions.

    Akeusola enjoined them to avail themselves the many opportunities offered by the college.

    Said Akeusola: ”With the support of the government, the Governing Council, management and academic board, the college has been able to attract foreign assistance in recent times, and this has boost teaching and research. I, therefore, advised you to take advantages of this golden opportunity. I strongly advised that you remain focus, diligent and disciplined in order to achieve your dreams and aspirations in this college and beyond to make your parents proud.”

    The provost said the increased investment in infrastructural and other facilities at the college has resulted in the full accreditation of all programmes run by the college, by the National Commission for College of Education (NCCE) during its accreditation last September.

    He also called on the members of the college communities to join hands together with the college governing council to ensure peaceful co-existence and transformation of the college.

    Akeusola said plans were underway to celebrate the college 20th anniversary in December.

  • School matriculates 519

    oyo State College of Agriculture, Igboora, Oyo State, has matriculated 519 students.According to a statement from the institution, 49 Higher National Diploma (HND) and 470 National Diploma (ND) students matriculated. It was the highest number of students to be matriculated since the inception of the institution.

    The acting provost of the college, Prof. Jacob Gbemiga Adewale, said the college was recently rated as the third best College of Agriculture in Nigeria.

    He added that the main objective of the school is the provision of sufficient food and self employment. Adewale, therefore, implored the new intakes to be serious with their academic in order to achieve the best.

    He warned the matriculating students to shun anti-social activities that could puncture their academic attainment. He assured the students that they would soon become employers of labour and food providers considering the practical training that the students would be exposed to in the college.

    He urged well meaning individuals, philanthropists and community leaders for their contributions to the development of the college in terms of special projects execution for the college.

    Prof. Adewale appreciated Governor Abiola Ajimobi for his support and commitment to the college.

    Freshers admitted by the Ekiti State College of Health and Technology, Ijero Ekiti, have been matriculated. The ceremony was held last week on the campus. The programme, which started at 10:30am, had families and friends of matriculating students in attendance.

    The Provost, Pastor Bayo Ojo, in his speech, urged them to promote good conduct within and outside the school. He said: “You are not only here to be built academically but morally and mentally. It would be best if you behave yourself as worthy ambassadors of your respective families and this institution.”

    The Acting Registrar, Mr R.S. Aluko, who administered the matriculation oath on the students, said the freshers should count themselves lucky because “you being here is an opportunity which I advise you to handle with care”.

    “There are a lot of people out there, who are seeking admission into the college. Over 2,000 applicants applied to study various courses but we found only 778 of you worthy,” Auko stated.

    The Ajero of Ijero-Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Adewole, welcomed the students to the Ijero community. He urged them to shun all vices that would disrupt peace in the community, stating that members of the community were always helpful to students.

    Chinedu Best, an indigene of Anambra State, who was admitted into Medical Laboratory Technology department, said: “I am happy to be here. I chose the college because of its standard and the dedication of Ekiti people to academics. I urge the state government to put more effort in the area of infrastructure on the campus.”

    The ceremony ended with parade by returning students of the college.

    : Principal tasks students on excellence

    The Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effunrun, has held matriculation for the freshers admitted into part-time programmes last week. The event, which was held in the expansive conference centre of the institute, saw 517 students taking the oath to begin the 2012/2013 session. The figure was low compared to 810 students admitted in the last session.

    In her address, the Acting Principal and Chief Executive Officer of the institute, Mrs Clara Dennar, said 1,077 students applied for admission but only 517 met requirements of the institution. She said the institute introduced strict selection procedure to ensure that only the best candidates were admitted.

    “May I, at this juncture, congratulate you on your successful admission into the institute. I also wish to advise you to be focused and work hard to justify the confidence reposed in you,” she stated.

    She said: “Since inception, the institute has developed competent technical manpower that is turning the valves in the oil and gas sector. I am proud to say that PTI is now a household name in the oil industry, as there is no oil company that does not have a PTI graduate in its staff list. You are, therefore, expected to maintain the high academic standard set by your predecessors.

    “I am aware that most of you are grappling with so many challenges. Besides being employed, some people among you are fathers and mothers. You have to balance your time to achieve academic excellence, bearing in mind that there is no freedom without sacrifice.”

    A 50-year-old man, Mr E. Ironbar, who was part of the matriculating students, attended the programme with his daughters. He was admitted for Higher National Diploma (HND) into the department of Petroleum Marketing and Business Studies. He told CAMPUSLIFE: “I came back to school for further knowledge on a particular aspect of my profession.”

    Another fresher, Patience Akporode, HND 1 Petroleum and Natural Gas Department, said: “I feel very happy today that my plans for my future are yielding results. I hope to be an entrepreneur at the end of my study.”

    Esther Onomuoja, ND 1 Mineral Resources, said: “I am finally a student. The institute is a good place to be. I hope to come out with a good grade at the end of my study.”

    UNIBEN matriculates 5,915, warns against cultism

    The University of Benin, Edo State, yesterday admitted five thousand, nine hundred and fifteen students to full membership of the institution after subscribing to relevant matriculation oath for the 2012/2013 academic session.

    Professor Osayuki Oshodin, Vice-Chancellor of the university charged the matriculating students to be loyal and true to the matriculation oath of obedience and respect to the authorities of the university that offered them the admission.

    He admonished them to protect and guard their new status jealously, and avoid any unwholesome behavior that may pose a threat to the peace and progress of the university.

    While administering the matriculation oath, Prof. Oshodin said the university administration frowns on the indecent dressing by many of the female students in the name of fashion.

    He said the attitude is disgusting as it has been identified to be one of the major factors responsible for cases of sexual harassment experienced by students.

    The Vice-Chancellor, therefore, enjoined the female students to always appear responsible at all gatherings.

    Advising the students against examination malpractice, a serious misconduct in the institution, Prof. Oshodin said the university authorities had a zero tolerance for such nefarious act, noting that it was ready at all times to apply appropriate sanctions against offenders.

    “The burning issue of cultism is of great concern to the university. I know some of you may have been initiated into one cult group or the other before you gained admission into this institution. Let it be known to you that the our security network will fish you out.”

    College matriculates freshers

    No fewer than 392 freshers offered admission to study various courses in the Bayelsa State College of Health Technology (BYCOHTECH) were inducted last week in the matriculation ceremony in the college’s pavillion.

    The ceremony started at noon with a procession of the new principal officers of college into the hall. The freshers, who were seated neatly in their flowing academic gowns, beamed with smile as the body of principal officers walked into the hall.

    In his address, the Provost, Dr Teddy Adias, congratulated the students for being among the selected few that scaled through the college’s entry examination. He charged the freshers to be focused and dedicated to their studies, noting that the college was not a play ground.

    Adias advised the freshmen against taking part in criminal activities, adding that the college has zero tolerance for vices such as cultism, examination malpractice, extortion, sexual harassment among others.

    Calling on the government to come to the aid of the school in finance, accreditation, and manpower development, the Provost said the college had recorded remarkable achievements in recent times.

    The Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Seriake Dickson, represented by his Commissioner for Health, Dr Anapurere Awoli, said the government believed in the capability of the college to produce manpower needed for development in the health sector.

    The governor urged students to take their studies seriously, saying they were the human resources needed to drive the primary health care sector in the state. “The state policy on health is based on primary health care delivery, which is why we attach much importance to your training here as students,” the governor said.

    The Acting Registrar, Mr Yousuo Iruo, administered oath on the students. He stressed that the oath confirmed the freshers as bona fide students of the institution, adding that they would be held responsible for their actions on campus.

    Richard Owiyal, a fresher, praised God for his admission. He promised to be work hard to achieve excellence.

    Over 132 students were admitted into the department of Environmental Health Science; 118 in Community Health Science department; 39 in Medical Laboratory Science; 57 in Health Information Management department; 25 in Dental Health Science department; 15 in Pharmacy Technician Study and five in Public Health Nursing department.

    Present at the ceremony were Special Adviser on Tertiary Education to the governor, Dr Godwin Ziriki; Senior Special Assistant, Research and Social Media, John Idumange, and Chairman, Kolokuma Opukuma Local Government Area, Mr Ineye Igbaifegha.

  • Igbinedion varsity matriculates 900

    Nine hundred students have subscribed to the matriculation oath of the Igbinedion University, Okada in Edo State.

    The students, christened ‘Paragons set,’ took the oath at the 14th matriculation held at the institution’s auditorium.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Eghosa Osaghae, who administered the oath, urged the students to avoid religious or ethnic intolerance and other social vices that can disturb the peaceful co-existence of students on campus.

    Osaghae challenged the students to make their marks as successful entrepreneurs in the foorsteps of the founder of the university, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion.

    He warned the students that acts which breached the matriculation oaths would lead to expulsion, suspension or rustication.

    The VC admonished them to take their studies seriously and see the opportunity to be in the institution as a life-changing transition.

    Said he: “To be leaders, self-conscious models and accomplishers, do not show religious or ethnic intolerance of any kind.

    “I congratulate you, our matriculating students on this life –transforming transition and admonish every one of you to make use of the opportunity on offer through this matriculation,” he said.

    Chairman of the institutions’ Parents Consultative Forum (PCF), Dr. Johnbull Aibangbe, said parents have launched an assurance policy for the students.

    He said the policy allows PCF to pay three session tuition fees for any student whose sponsor dies in the course of study.

    Dr. Aibangbe disclosed that the PCF has also built a recreational centre as well as a medical centre for the students.

     

  • IBBUL matriculates 1,400 students

    About 1,400 students have sworn the matriculation oath of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL) for the 2012/2013 academic session.

    The new students represent about 9.3 per cent of the 15,000 candidates who applied for placement in the university.

    Addressing the students, Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Ibrahim Adamu Kolo, urged them to face their studies with all seriousness to justify the opportunity of the admission and investment of their parents.

    “Out of over 15,000 applications received for admission, only a fraction were able to scale the herculean hurdle of been qualified to be offered the admission, hence the need for you to be committed and disciplined about every academic activity,” he said.

    He also advised them to desist from any act that could jeopardise their future and the image of the university as the institution does not compromise on issues of academic standard.

    Kolo, while commending the cordial working relationship his administration is enjoying with members of staff, also appealed to the parents and well meaning individuals in Niger State to support the university by establishing legacy projects to accelerate its development.
