Enugu APC leaders endorse Tinubu, Mbah for re-election ahead of 2027

Prominent leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, including the party’s State Caretaker Committee Chairman, Dr Ben Nwoye; Senator Kelvin Chukwu of Enugu East Senatorial District; and the Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Emma Enukwu, have declared support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The APC stalwarts said President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at economic revitalisation, improved governance, and national stability, has begun to yield measurable and positive outcomes for Nigerians.

Speaking with journalists at his Amurri political ward in Nkanu West Local Government Area after revalidating his APC membership electronically, Senator Chukwu, who recently defected from the Labour Party, said he had no regrets joining the ruling party.

The lawmaker explained that his decision to align with the APC was influenced by President Tinubu’s people-oriented policies and programmes, as well as the performance of Governor Mbah, whom he described as one of the best-performing governors in Nigeria.

He added that the most meaningful way for the people of Enugu State and Nigerians at large to acknowledge the achievements of both leaders is by supporting their re-election in 2027.

“For this to happen, our people must fully embrace the ongoing APC e-registration exercise. They must obtain their party membership cards and also ensure they have their Permanent Voter Cards ahead of the general elections,” Chukwu said.

In his remarks, Dr. Nwoye, who also hails from the Amurri community, noted that the convergence of political heavyweights in the area under the APC umbrella had fundamentally altered the political landscape.

“With all the leading political figures in this community now in APC, it will be extremely difficult for anybody outside the party to contest and win any election here in 2027. It will be an uphill task,” he stated.

Nwoye added that Senator Chukwu’s revalidation had laid to rest lingering speculations about his defection from the Labour Party to the APC.

He urged existing party members to revalidate their membership, while calling on new entrants to seize the opportunity of the ongoing exercise to become bona fide members of the APC.

The APC chairman insisted that both President Tinubu and Governor Mbah deserve a second term to enable them consolidate on the achievements recorded during their first tenure in office.

Meanwhile, Chief Enukwu, during his membership revalidation at Obinagu Ward in Udi Local Government Area of the state, emphasised the need for the electorate to equip themselves with valid APC membership cards and Permanent Voter Cards.

He explained that the newly introduced electronic registration and revalidation process was designed to modernise the party and align it with global best practices.

“Obinagu, this is the time for our people to register and obtain their membership cards so we can vote for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah in 2027,” Enukwu said.

The Deputy National Chairman assured President Tinubu that Enugu State would deliver no fewer than two million votes for the APC in the 2027 elections, a sharp contrast to the about 4,000 votes recorded in the state during the 2023 presidential poll.

Our correspondent reports that the Chief of Staff to Governor Peter Mbah, Barrister Victor Udeh, was also formally admitted into the APC on Saturday at his Umuabi community in Udi Local Government Area amid fanfare.

President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda focuses on critical sectors including economic reforms, security, infrastructure development, agriculture, and healthcare and youth empowerment.

The programme, according to party leaders, has begun yielding promising results, with inflation reportedly dropping to 14.45 per cent in November from 24.23 per cent recorded in March, among other key economic indicators.

Mbah hails fallen heroes, seeks sustainable welfare for ex-servicemen

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has praised the sacrifices of Nigeria’s ex-servicemen and fallen heroes, describing them as critical to the nation’s security, democracy, and territorial integrity.

The governor spoke at the unveiling of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, where he was represented by his deputy, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai.

Mbah said the annual emblem launch should go beyond symbolism, calling for structured and sustainable engagement to improve the welfare of members of the Nigerian Legion.

“On behalf of the people of Enugu State, we are grateful for your selfless sacrifices. Beyond donations, we need an organised framework that will guarantee meaningful and lasting support for those who served,” he said.

He highlighted ongoing development projects in the state, including the construction of 260 Smart Schools, 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres, expanded road infrastructure, and agricultural programmes, noting that veterans could benefit from strategic partnerships with the government.

Earlier, the Enugu State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Dr. Emeka Norman Igwesi, thanked Governor Mbah for his support to both living and fallen heroes but urged greater commitment to veterans’ welfare through policies and programmes.

Igwesi also lamented the failure of many individuals and organisations to redeem pledges made during remembrance events, while commending Mbah for keeping his promises and delivering good governance.

He called for better utilisation of the skills of retired military personnel and appealed for support in areas such as security vehicles, monthly subventions, scholarships for indigent children, and empowerment of widows of fallen servicemen.

  • Mbah seeks review of financing models for manufacturing sector

Mbah seeks review of financing models for manufacturing sector

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has called for an urgent review of Nigeria’s current financing frameworks for the manufacturing sector.

The governor warned that commercial interest rates hovering between 30 and 37 percent are “completely incompatible with industrial growth and competitiveness.”

Represented by Deputy Governor Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai at the 37th Annual General Meeting, Awards and Gala Night of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) Southeast in Enugu, Mbah said manufacturers could not thrive under a credit environment designed to “suffocate production rather than stimulate it.”

He noted that while single-digit intervention loans exist through development finance institutions, such as the Bank of Industry, access remains limited.

Mbah proposed the establishment of more regional offices for development banks to eliminate bottlenecks and bring affordable financing closer to manufacturers.

The governor also underscored the necessity of strengthening research institutions and linking them directly to industry, insisting that meaningful backward integration depends on robust R&D capabilities.

Special guest of honour and member representing Imo West Senatorial District, Senator Osita Izunaso, reinforced Mbah’s position, describing the financing and forex environment as major constraints to the sector.

Izunaso urged MAN to partner state governments to conduct seismic studies on the Anambra trough, saying unlocking the region’s vast gas reserves would provide manufacturers with reliable and cheaper industrial energy.

He further disclosed that the National Assembly has passed a landmark bill mandating the use of at least 30 percent local raw materials by manufacturers, a legislative tool he said would accelerate backward integration once it receives Presidential assent.

“This is the direction the world is moving, and Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind,” he added.

MAN Southeast Chairman, Lady Ada Chukwudozie, described the AGM as a decisive moment for repositioning the region’s industries amidst sweeping fiscal reforms.

She said MAN’s partnership with PwC on tax sensitization helped manufacturers navigate regulatory changes and reduce compliance risks in 2025.

Chukwudozie also emphasized the need to eliminate multiple taxation, expand sustainable energy adoption, and strengthen modern agriculture, such as hydroponics, greenhouse farming and agro-processing, as a foundation for raw-material security and rural industrialization.

Delivering the keynote, Prof. Nnanyelugo Ike-Muonso, Director General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council, said backward integration must now be the default strategy for Nigerian manufacturers.

“We cannot build a first-world manufacturing sector on a third-world import-dependence structure,” he warned, stressing that import substitution is central to stabilizing prices and protecting the naira.

The royal father of the day, His Eminence Eze Eberechukwu Oji, Eze-Aro of Arochukwu, urged MAN to lead a regional agenda for reviving over 1,000 dormant industries in the Southeast, insisting that every imported product represents an exported job.

The AGM, chaired by Chief Obinna Iyiegbu of Cubana Group, drew top industrialists, policymakers, traditional rulers and business leaders from across Nigeria.

Awards of Excellence were presented to distinguished manufacturers and institutions for their contributions to innovation, industrial growth and community development.

  • Mbah, Chime, others push for youth skills, cultural revival

Mbah, Chime, others push for youth skills, cultural revival

The 2025 Agbaja Summit continued in Enugu on Thursday with a strong call for a new model of education that equips youths with skills to take charge of their future and contribute meaningfully to society.

The two-day summit brought together prominent Agbaja leaders, including, former Governor Sullivan Chime, former Minister of Power Prof. Chinedu Nebo, Senator Osita Ngwu, Rep. Sunday Umeha, and Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu, Chief Lorita Aniagolu, Surveyor Ugochukwu Chime, among others.

Agbaja comprises culturally linked communities in Udi, Ezeagu, and parts of Enugu North, Enugu South and Igboetiti LGAs.

With the theme “Empowerment for the Future,” the summit emphasised shared identity, cultural revival and youth-driven advancement across the region.

Declaring the summit open, Governor Peter Mbah, represented by the Commissioner for Environment, Prof. Sam Ugwu, highlighted the tourism potential of Agbaja communities and commended their sustained efforts to strengthen their collective heritage. He described the summit as “a movement in pursuit of excellence, identity and collective progress.”

Mbah reiterated his administration’s commitment to building a knowledge-driven state economy anchored on human capital, technology and innovation.

He said the government’s investments in 260 smart schools, curriculum reform and skill acceleration centres were designed to position Enugu as Nigeria’s “skills capital.”

“Knowledge has become the new currency of power. Skills have become the new economic passport,” he said, urging Agbaja youths to seize modern opportunities and build on the foundation laid by their elders.

Former Governor Sullivan Chime, who is the patron of the Agbaja Leaders of Thought, said the summit’s focus on education and empowerment aligns with the core values that have historically defined the Agbaja people.

He noted that investing in human capacity, not rivalry or sectionalism, remains the group’s contribution to the wider development of Enugu State.

“It is in our DNA to create, produce, reform and advance society,” Chime said, adding that renewed attention to education and skills development is essential for Agbaja’s long-term progress.

National Assembly members from the area, Senator Osita Ngwu (Enugu West) and Rep. Sunday Umeha (Udi/Ezeagu), both of whom addressed the gathering, praised Agbaja communities for reviving their culture and building stronger pathways for youth development.

Ngwu said the collective effort reflects the right direction for the people.

“This is what we are supposed to be doing. Reviving our culture means we are on the right path,” he said, pledging continuous support for the initiative.

He recalled that over 3,000 youths benefitted from his six-month free training programme last year and assured that his scholarship scheme for Agbaja students remains active.

Ngwu, who chairs the Senate Committee on Air Force, also urged the people to take advantage of what he described as a major milestone, the appointment of an Agbaja son as Chief of Air Staff, by encouraging more youths to enlist in the military.

Hon. Umeha lauded the summit organisers and reaffirmed his commitment to the developmental aspirations of the Agbaja bloc, which he represents in the National Assembly.

“What we are doing here today is completely within my jurisdiction as the voice of the Agbaja people,” he said.

He urged the people to harness their political and economic strengths to foster unity and progress. “If every youth in Udi and Ezeagu is given the opportunity through education and skills acquisition, he will excel,” he said, calling for an end to using academic attainment as a tool for division.

Chairman of the summit’s planning committee, Prof. Chike Anibeze, said the summit rekindled the vibrancy of the Coal City as Agbaja people celebrated their identity and reaffirmed their collective aspirations.

He recalled that the maiden summit in 2022, conceived by the Agbaja Leaders of Thought under Prof. Chinedu Nebo, delivered the 12-point Agbaja Development Blueprint covering education, healthcare, agriculture, youth empowerment and entrepreneurship.

Anibeze said the 2023 Agbaja Declaration, which ensured that no Agbaja child attends school without sandals and a bag, was among the initiatives inspired by the blueprint.

These efforts, he noted, reflect growing communal responsibility and a renewed culture of giving back.

The colloquium concluded with donations toward the proposed Agbaja Centre of Excellence, a skills acquisition hub aimed at accelerating youth talent development across the region.

Awards were also presented to distinguished sons and daughters who have contributed to Agbaja’s growth.

  • Mbah inaugurates committee to review taxes, levies in Enugu

Mbah inaugurates committee to review taxes, levies in Enugu

Enugu Governor Peter Mbah has inaugurated a committee to carry out a comprehensive review of tax policies, rates, levies, and fees under the control of the state.

According to the government, the committee, which has two weeks to carry out its assignment, would benchmark Enugu State’s revenue practices against Lagos, Abuja, and other South East states as they relate to Land Use Charge, Certificate of Occupancy (C-of-O) fees, market levies and stall rents, business premises registration, signage and advertisement fees, among others, and recommend reforms to improve compliance, fairness, transparency, and revenue efficiency.

The nine-man committee, which has the Solicitor-General of Enugu, Ikechukwu Ezenwukwa, as Chairman, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Revenue Mobilisation, Adenike Okebu, has members drawn from interest groups, government, organised labour, and the civil society.

They are the Chairman, Trade Union Congress, Enugu chapter, Comrade Ben Asogwa; Chairman of State Market Association, Chief Chinwuba Igwesi; Head of Legal, Enugu State Inland Revenue Service, Ngozi Ezema; Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Markets, Chief Chinedu Mbah; 1st Deputy President, Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, ECCIMA, Engr. Nnanyelugo Onyemelukwe; Deputy Council Chairman and representative of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, Enugu State, Hon. Paul Okwo; and representative of the civil society, Barr. Crownwell Chibuzo.

Inaugurating the committee at Government House, Enugu, on Friday, Governor Mbah, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said that the committee was initiated in response to various public complaints relating to taxes and state-controlled revenue heads.

He added the committee’s terms of reference include to: “review existing harmonisation/consolidation laws and other revenue-related laws in Enugu State; review the implementation of such laws and their impact; identify and evaluate all revenue heads under the control of Enugu State (excluding federally administered taxes like VAT and Stamp Duties); identify all areas of duplication and multiple taxation across the state, including the local government; examine the impact of the expansion of the tax bracket and issues of a culture of non-tax payment; and assess the fairness, transparency, and efficiency of current tax rates and collection processes in Enugu.”

He directed the committee to ensure proper stakeholder engagement by conducting surveys and interviews with property owners, market traders, local government revenue officers, local government chairmen, civil society organisations, and business owners, among others.

Providing more insights into the state’s revenue mobilisation reforms, the governor said his administration, upon assumption of office, took determined steps to move revenue collection from “a fragmented silos model to a unified, data-driven, and performance-oriented revenue ecosystem.”

“One of the most decisive reforms we undertook was the complete stoppage of cash collection across all MDAs. This was not merely a procedural change. It was a philosophical shift toward transparency and traceability.

“Today in Enugu State, all payments are now routed through digital platforms, ensuring real-time monitoring and eliminating leakages. This move has drastically reduced opportunities for fraud and enhanced public confidence in our systems.

“To drive accountability, we introduced a Performance Appraisal Framework for all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as each Ministry, Department and Agency, MDA, is now assigned clear revenue targets linked to their operational mandates,” he stated.

Mbah also explained that the government had built the faith of the people by ensuring that every revenue collected was deployed to their service.

“Revenue is not just a fiscal tool. It is a moral obligation. Every naira we collect must translate into better schools, safer roads, cleaner water, and a brighter future because our vision for Enugu State is bold and transformative, rooted in the unwavering principles of transparency, traceability, and accountability,” he concluded.

Ezenwukwa said that the setting up of the committee further underscored the governor’s place as a listening leader, who cared about the concerns of the people.

He thanked Mbah for finding them worthy of undertaking the onerous task, assuring that members would justify the confidence reposed in them.

Mbah hails APC’s renewed commitmentto internal democracy, inclusiveness

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, on Friday applauded the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its renewed commitment to internal democracy, inclusiveness and transparency as the party commenced its Southeast Zonal Public Hearing on the amendment of its constitution.

The event, hosted by the Enugu State Government at The Dome, International Conference Centre, Enugu, drew stakeholders from across the five states of the Southeast and was moderated by members of the APC Constitution Review Committee led by Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni.

Declaring the session open on behalf of the governor, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, said the exercise marked a defining moment for the party and for democratic development in the region.

He noted that the ongoing constitutional amendment, being conducted for the first time through zonal public hearings across Nigeria, signaled the APC’s readiness to deepen internal reforms and strengthen its organisational structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mbah commended the Buni-led committee for its “visionary leadership” and described the hearing as an expression of the party’s resolve to embrace accountability, broaden participation and modernise its governance principles.

“A strengthened constitution will ensure more efficient party administration, reduce pre-election disputes, enhance conflict-resolution mechanisms, and create an enabling environment for the party to field credible candidates and manage electoral victories responsibly,” he said.

He added that the inclusion of civil society, youth and women groups, professional bodies and support organisations in the process demonstrated the APC’s willingness to align with global best practices in party administration.

According to the governor, Enugu, “the historic capital of the former Eastern Region”, was delighted to host the milestone event, which reinforces the state’s growing status as a hub for governance dialogue and political engagement.

To the stakeholders from Enugu, Abia, Imo, Anambra and Ebonyi, who submitted their memoranda on party administration, conflict-resolution processes, zoning, women and youth representation, and clarity of party structures, Governor Mbah urged them to make objective, forward-looking contributions capable of strengthening the party’s internal cohesion and institutional resilience.

“This is not a forum for personal grievances or factional battles,” he said. “Let us make recommendations that will endure and leave a legacy for future generations.”

Chairman of the Southeast Zonal Public Hearing and member representing Okigwe/Onuimo/Isiala Mbano Federal Constituency, Hon. Miriam Onuoha, said the amendment process was initiated under the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to “fill existing lacunae, expand party organs and ensure a more inclusive and functional framework.”

“As you can see, many people are coming into our party and we need to amend the constitution to accommodate them. Political inclusion is what President Tinubu and the APC are driving across all regions,” she said.

  • Mbah redefines governance, sets new Devt benchmark in Enugu — Nwaokobia Jnr

Mbah redefines governance, sets new Devt benchmark in Enugu — Nwaokobia Jnr

Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State is redefining governance and setting new benchmarks in public administration less than three years into his tenure, according to the Convener of the COUNTRYFIRST Movement, Prof. Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr.

In a statement, Nwaokobia commended the governor for deploying innovation, technology, fiscal discipline, and bold reforms to transform Enugu from a largely civil service economy into a productive, technology-driven hub of inclusive growth.

At the heart of Mbah’s development vision is an ambitious plan to grow the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from $4.4 billion to $30 billion within eight years, anchored on a detailed blueprint focused on infrastructure, innovation, and human capital development.

Analysts have described his leadership style as data-driven and result-oriented, applauding his introduction of “disruptive innovation” in governance. The Enugu Geographic Information Service (ENGIS), for instance, has digitised over 80 percent of land titles, reducing approval time from months to days and eliminating bottlenecks long associated with corruption.

Mbah’s administration has also resolved a two-decade water crisis that left residents reliant on tankers and boreholes. The rehabilitation of the 9th Mile and Oji River water schemes has boosted production from about two million litres per day to over 120 million litres.

Fiscal reforms have yielded remarkable results. Enugu’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) grew from ₦37 billion in 2022 to ₦144.7 billion by late 2024—a nearly 300 percent increase—without introducing new taxes. Instead, the government expanded the tax net, automated revenue collection, and formalised small and medium enterprises.

In education and healthcare, the state is constructing 260 Smart Green Schools—one per ward—equipped with digital whiteboards, robotics labs, and high-speed internet. Similarly, 260 modern Primary Health Centres are being built or upgraded to enhance access to quality medical care, particularly in rural communities.

Urban development has gained traction with the 10,000-hectare New Enugu City Project—a planned smart, eco-friendly metropolis designed to accommodate over 300,000 residents with integrated residential, commercial, and green zones.

Enugu is also among the first states to domesticate Nigeria’s power decentralisation policy through the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023, granting it authority to regulate its electricity market. In addition, an AI-powered Command and Control Centre with drones and CCTV surveillance has strengthened security across the state.

Under Mbah’s fiscal discipline framework, capital expenditure now accounts for 79 percent of the 2024 budget of ₦521.5 billion—up from ₦166 billion in 2023.

Agriculture and industrialisation are witnessing a revival through mechanised farm estates, agro-industrial rehabilitation—such as United Palm Products Ltd. and Sunrise Flour Mills—and plans for industrial parks and a tractor-assembly plant.

The government has also launched Enugu Air to boost transportation, developed modern terminals, and deployed compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered buses to improve urban mobility.

Digital transformation remains central to Mbah’s agenda, with over 380 kilometres of fibre-optic cables laid across the state and the introduction of e-governance platforms for land titling, business registration, and taxation—all aimed at improving service delivery and transparency.

As he enters his third year in office, Mbah plans to consolidate ongoing reforms, expand job creation through industrial estates and logistics hubs, and attract more private and foreign investments.

Observers say his pragmatic, performance-driven leadership has earned him a reputation as a “Talk-and-Do” governor, positioning Enugu as one of Nigeria’s most efficiently governed and investor-friendly states—a model for effective, results-oriented governance in the country.

  • Mbah and the imperative of revamping security training institutions

Mbah and the imperative of revamping security training institutions

    By Uche Anichukwu

It is no longer news that the National Economic Council, NEC, has appointed the governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, to chair a new committee tasked with overhauling all institutions for the training of security agencies across Nigeria. That appointment followed NEC’s endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposal for a comprehensive reform of security training facilities nationwide. The proposal was presented during the 152nd NEC meeting held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Other members of the committee include Governors Uba Sani (Kaduna); Dapo Abiodun (Ogun); Kefas Agbu (Taraba); Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom); Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) and Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), while former Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, will serve as Secretary.

Tinubu, while addressing the NEC Council, stressed the urgency of the assignment, saying: “We have to make the conditions of the training facilities more conducive for both the trainers and trainees.” According to Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, who briefed the press, the Mbah-led committee has just one month to submit a detailed blueprint for the renovation and modernisation of police and other security training institutions.

Only a few days ago, the president, in a further demonstration of a renewed effort to reinvigorate the security of lives and property, relieved the service chiefs of their assignments and appointed new ones. So, Mbah’s new assignment, which came just about a day or two ahead of this major development, no doubt places him at the centre of Tinubu’s renewed effort to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security architecture through institutional reform, improved training conditions, and enhanced capacity development for security personnel.

This is no doubt a demonstration of Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and NEC’s confidence in the governor’s leadership qualities. But even more importantly, it is an affirmation of his giant strides in the security of lives and property less than 29 months in the saddle. Yet this did not come as a surprise, at least to those who have keenly followed developments in Enugu since Mbah took charge at the Lion Building, as the office of the Enugu State Governor is known.

For instance, on October 4, 2024, Vice President Shettima was in Enugu to commission the Enugu State Garment and Fashion Hub as well as unveil the 5th Expanded National Micro, Small, and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSME) Clinics. Both are collaborative efforts of the Federal Government and Enugu to boost MSMEs in the state. He also used the opportunity to tour some of the infrastructural projects by the Mbah administration, including the Command and Control security infrastructure built by the governor from scratch in just a little over one year in office. Mbah had crossed over to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. But it did not matter to the VP. According to him, the time for politics was over and the federal government was ready to work with visionary leaders like Mbah anywhere they were found, party divides notwithstanding, in order to move the country forward.

On the Command and Control Centre and Mbah’s investment in the security sector in general, Shettima said, “If I say I was impressed by what I saw in Enugu, it is an understatement. I was overwhelmed by the giant strides recorded by Governor Mbah and his team. He has embraced modernity. He has embraced digital technology. Most of the things I saw are avant-garde technologies, state-of-the-art security infrastructure. He is doing excellently well and he is worthy to be emulated by other governors across the length and breadth of this nation. He is one of the few CEOs who are versatile in the potentiality of the Information Technology industry.”

A few months later, the President himself was in Enugu on January 4, 2025, to inaugurate some of the breathtaking projects accomplished by Mbah in one year and six months, including the Command and Control Centre and over 150 security vehicles. For context and in brief, the Enugu Command and Control Centre, adjudged by many security experts as the biggest and most modern one in the country at the moment, is the endpoint of many fibre optic cables laid across the state and connected to AI-embedded cameras for effective surveillance of Enugu State. The cameras are capable of face and number plate recognition, among others.

The security vehicles are manned by the Distress Response Squared, DRS, a special police unit. The vehicles are equally fitted with AI-enabled cameras. In addition, the DRS operatives wear bodycams while on duty to ensure proper monitoring.

On the occasion, Tinubu said, “He (Mbah) is doing a fantastic job. I am glad that Enugu got a very good tomorrow, today. I salute Peter Mbah for his commitment to development. You have encouraged me on the technological advancement of the state. The commitment you have from the private sector is commendable. The election is over and we have to move the nation forward. I don’t care which party you come from. You are my friend.”

Besides the President and Vice President, Mbah’s strides in security had even much earlier been acknowledged by no less a person than the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu himself. That was during the commissioning of the reconstructed Economic and Financial Crimes Commission South East zonal office in Enugu on December 19, 2023 – barely six months after Mbah was inaugurated as governor.

Narrating what difference Mbah had made in so short a time, Ribadu declared, “Before the coming of this administration, police stations were being attacked, law enforcement personnel were being attacked. People were giving selfish orders. Those who are not even in Nigeria would sit somewhere in the comfort of the countries where they live and selfishly give instructions that people should not go to work; that people should not go out to look for their own livelihood, and people used to take such orders. But no more; it is no longer happening.”

Back to President Tinubu’s push for the revamp of all institutions for the training of security agencies. It is noteworthy that it was never a whimsical venture, but flows from a well-thought-out plan to improve security sector infrastructure and manpower, especially the security training institutions that have been so neglected over the decades that they have become thoroughly decrepit and an embarrassing assault on human dignity.

In 2013, Channels TV aired a damning report on the inhuman state of the Police Training College in Ikeja, Lagos. A Punch newspaper report of April 23, 2016, entitled “Decay, filth rule police training colleges as new recruits warm up for resumption” recalled the eyesore as captured by Channels TV.

“The documentary showed the sad state of the dormitories, the toilets and other vital facilities needed to address the daily needs of occupants. Some students were seen urinating at the back of the building where the drainage system had broken down completely, while the toilets and bathrooms in many of the hostels were seen to be in terrible conditions. Electricity supply within the college was also a big issue. The Police College, Ikeja, which was initially built to accommodate only 700 students, housed over 2,554 occupants as at January 2013,” Punch recollected.

However, under the Tinubu administration things are changing. Only earlier this October, the President assented to the Nigeria Police Training Institutions Establishment Bill, 2024, which is a comprehensive legislation that provides statutory backing for 48 police training institutions across the country. These include Police Colleges, Police Training Schools, Police Tactical Schools, Police Technical Training Schools, and other specialised institutions scattered across the six geopolitical zones.

But the police training institutions are just emblematic of the rot affecting those of other security agencies. The good news is that this will soon become a thing of the past, for not only is it good thinking, the assignment has been handed to a well-selected team headed by Governor Mbah, a man that has exhibited not only the political will to wage war against insecurity with demonstrable success, but who has also invested heavily in modern security infrastructure and human capital development in that sector. With this, Nigerians expect nothing but positive results that will change the narrative not just in the quality of training our security agencies receive, but also in the quality of the facilities where they are trained.
