Gombe politics: The travails of a god-father

    • By By Khalil Kashere

In a rare media appearance, former governor of Gombe State and senator representing Gombe central, Danjuma Goje was in the news last weekend. It thus appears the senator has for a while been consigned into obscurity in the politics of Gombe, a state he once bestrode and held sway like a colossus.

It was an opinion article titled “Senator Goje: The Mistake APC Must Avoid” written by one Louis Achi. The article bemoans the diminishing leadership status of senator Goje, the erstwhile strongman of Gombe politics casting him as a victim of political subterfuge and betrayal.

The article presented a pitiable scenario, yet, describing him as “a winning candidate (sic) Danjuma Goje, becoming a pariah in his own party simply because he commands the loyalty of the electorate.” A paradox of some sort that exemplifies the illusion of power and overrated influence of a yesterday man. How can a man that commands the loyalty of the electorate become a pariah in party politics. In the American fantasy drama television series, Game of Thrones, created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, power is aptly described as an illusion, a shadow on the wall. It resides where people believe it resides, not necessarily in the hands of the powerful. The game of power, like in other climes, is ever dynamic. This is the current reality of Gombe politics where power has since changed hands.

For the avoidance of doubt, it is apt to state the fact in order to correct the misinformation and disinformation in the said article. Curiously, the article concocted some half-truths, half-falsehood narratives in a futile attempt to dress Senator Danjuma Goje in a borrowed robe as the main factor in Gombe politics. Here is a state where there is a sitting second term APC governor, who has not only performed excellently well across indices to the admiration of all and sundry but has demonstrated leadership and unwavering loyalty to the party as being led by President Bola Tinubu.

In 2023, at a time when the wave of opposition was blowing across the north, especially the north east states, Senator Goje was aloof, only concerned about his own senatorial seat. He lifted no finger in support of the party.

Unashamedly, the revisionist article coroborrated the fact of Goje’s absence in APC victory in Gombe when it wrote: “While the APC suffered humiliating defeats in Gombe, losing all two other Senate seats and five out of six House of Representatives seats to the PDP, Goje alone stood tall. Without stepping out for a single campaign rally, his constituents overwhelmingly re-elected him.” Yet, with this obvious fact, the writer still naively ascribed to the same man, a messianic role which Providence has since taken away from him. He wrote: “Despite his loyalty and proven electoral value, the APC and the Presidency seem reluntant to tap into Goje’s political capital to strengthen the party in Gombe state.”

Even after the emergence of President Tinubu and in furtherance of his disdain for the president and the party, Goje chosed to work against the party’s position in the choice of the leadership of 10th senate by siding with the opponent. Where he could not visibly be absent, he arrogantly maintain aloofness. Only recently, APC stakeholders in the north east gathered on self assessment to review the party’s two years scorecard. Everyone that matter rose at that meeting to express satisfaction and voiced their position to pass a vote of confidence on President Tinubu-led federal government. Again, Senator Goje was conspicuously absent. How then can anyone in good conscience blame the people of Gombe for his declining political fortune.

Let it be known that in the present Gombe, there is no question at all as to where the lever of power resides. Putting it in its proper context, the 2023 elections, federal and state in Gombe, offered a clue as to when the rain started beating the ex-godfather. That was when the people spoke in unambiguous terms with the election of Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya for a second in office. Goje who choose to play double standard by remaining in the All Progressive Congress (APC) but working against the party’s interest was soon to realise that without him, the people could resoundingly vote governor Inuwa Yahaya based on his performance.

Without doubt, Goje’s previous records vis-à-vis his commitment to party loyalty bear eloquent testimony of his lack of interest in Tinubu presidency. It cannot be overstated that Senator Goje refused to work for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential elections. There is nothing suggesting that he is ready to work for his reelection in 2027. After all, he did not support the re-election of Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya as governor. Neither did he supported, Usman Bello Kumo, the only APC member of the House of Representatives from Gombe and now Chief Whip who despite the obstacles placed before him has continued to win elections courtesy the power of the people. It is on record that Goje spared no effort to undermine Hon. Kumo, his former political son, whose only sin lies in his bourging popularity among his people. But for providence and the determination of Gombe electorates, the state would have lost the chance of producing a ranking member with the attendant benefits for the state. Similarly, the three members of the Gombe State House of Assembly within the Gombe Central senatorial district emerged without any support from Goje who instead worked against the interest of the ruling APC where he now seeks relevance.

Let it be clearly stated: Senator Danjuma Goje is not a victim of political persecution but the architect of his own misfortunes. He is reaping the consequences of a long pattern of double standards, self-serving politics and quiet sabotage against the very party that made him what he is today. You cannot claim to love the APC and at the same time undermine its leadership at every turn. While loyal party members were on the field defending the party’s mandate and selling the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Goje and his loyalists were openly fraternizing with the opposition. In fact, his actions and silence during that period emboldened the opposition and weakened party morale. No true party man behaves that way and still expects to be treated as a hero.

For someone who claims to be the leader of the North-East Senators’ Caucus, it is rather ironic that Senator Goje shunned a major APC stakeholders’ summit convened to strengthen the party and take key decisions, including the endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term. At a time when genuine party men were rallying around the President and consolidating unity ahead of 2027, Goje chose to stay away. That singular act exposed his double standards and confirmed that his commitment to the APC begins and ends where his personal interests are served, which is a sharp contrast from the image the vexed article is trying to portray.

Also, it is inconceivable that a man like Senator Goje who could be rightly be described as an elder statesman would seek to justify his verbal misadventure on the floor of the senate on the so-called lop-sidedness in funding for the north east, when in fact it was a case of an undisguised outpour of long concealed venom and bitterness.

As a ranking senator, Goje is not new to budgetting processes. What elders like him does in that circumstance is to use his influence to lobby his colleagues for more allocation rather than speaking to the gallery.

To rationalize his action as “Senator Goje was simply doing what a statesman should – speaking truth to power,” is to debase statesmanship.

Lastly, the article’s attempts to paint a picture of a Gombe APC that cannot survive without Goje is another fallacy and a joke taken too far. Here was a man that was suspended by APC at the Ward level and was later expelled for his anti-party activities; the expulsion was ratified by the party at local government level and approved by the party at the state level. It was on record that Goje, rather than defending himself and seek appeasement rushed to the High Court where to his amazement his expulsion was further affirmed. The matter is currently before the Court of Appeal. Needless to say, this speaks volume. The point is no party does that to a valuable stakeholder. It is a treatment reserves only for a spent force.

Let it be known that with or without Goje, the APC in Gombe will continue to be stronger, united, and more vibrant. The party is better positioned for future victory than it has ever been, precisely because it has moved beyond personality politics.

NEC appoints Mbah to lead committee on overhaul of security training institutions

The National Economic Council (NEC) has appointed Enugu Governor Peter Mbah as Chairman of a new committee tasked with overhauling training institutions of security agencies across Nigeria.

The decision followed NEC’s endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposal for a comprehensive reform of security training facilities nationwide.

The proposal was presented during the 152nd NEC meeting held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The committee, which has one month to submit a detailed blueprint for the renovation and modernisation of police and other security training institutions, is expected to develop practical strategies in line with President Tinubu’s vision for a transformed and professional security sector.

Other members of the committee include Governors Uba Sani (Kaduna); Dapo Abiodun (Ogun); Kefas Agbu (Taraba); Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom); Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) and Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa) while former Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, will serve as Secretary.

Addressing the Council, President Tinubu stressed the urgency of the assignment, saying: “We have to make the conditions of the training facilities more conducive for both the trainers and trainees.”

Governor Mbah’s appointment positions him at the heart of the federal government’s renewed effort to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security architecture through institutional reform, improved training conditions, and enhanced capacity development for security personnel.

His leadership, according to NEC sources, is expected to translate the President’s vision into actionable reforms that will restore professionalism, discipline, and modern standards across the country’s security training infrastructure.

Enugu stakeholders back Mbah’s move to APC

Leaders and stakeholders of Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area (LGA) of Enugu State have pledged full support for Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s decision to align the state with the Federal Government under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its Renewed Hope Agenda.

The declaration was made during a well-attended stakeholders’ meeting in the LGA, where key political figures emphasised unity and a shared commitment to sustainable development.

The event was marked by a unanimous endorsement of Governor Mbah’s leadership and strategic direction, which participants described as heralding a new chapter in Enugu’s political and developmental progress.

Addressing the gathering, the member representing Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency, Dennis Agbo, commended Mbah for his developmental strides, especially in Igbo-Eze North.

He cited infrastructure projects such as the establishment of smart schools and Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres, noting that no previous administration had delivered as much for the area.

“Wherever Governor Peter Mbah goes, we will follow,” Agbo declared, praising the governor’s visible commitment to grassroots development.

Enugu State Commissioner for Finance, Nath Urama, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the state’s engagement with the Federal Government has been smooth and productive under Mbah’s leadership.

“The ease with which we secure federal approvals shows the level of trust and respect Enugu State enjoys today. Resources are being managed transparently for the benefit of our people,” Urama said.

Council Chairman of Igbo-Eze North, Hon. Michael Uche Ogalla, stressed that political loyalty in Enugu State now revolves around the person and performance of the governor.

“In Enugu, our party is the personality of the performing governor. Wherever he goes, we go. Even if he moves every other day, we shall follow,” Ogalla stated.

The meeting concluded with a voice vote conducted by  Agbo, which received overwhelming approval from participants.  The vote symbolised the LGA’s commitment to align with the federal centre and support Governor Mbah’s political direction.

  • Mbah’s defection to APC a boost for Enugu’s development, says Nwafor

Mbah’s defection to APC a boost for Enugu’s development, says Nwafor

The coordinator of Concerned Professionals for Good Governance, Okechukwu Nwafor, has praised Governor Peter Mbah’s decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a bold step that will accelerate Enugu state’s development.

Nwafor commended the governor’s leadership and vision, noting that his defection reflected a commitment to progress and effective governance.

He said Mbah’s track record in infrastructure, education, and healthcare had already positioned Enugu as one of the fastest-growing states in the South-East.

Governor Mbah, who officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, said the move was the outcome of deep reflection and wide consultation with political stakeholders.

“This is no whimsical decision. It’s a collective move by the political family in Enugu State, comprising members of the National Assembly, members of the State House of Assembly, the State Executive Council, all the Local Government Chairmen and Councillors, all political appointees, and over 80% of Party Executives,” Mbah stated.

He explained that the defection was aimed at aligning Enugu State with the APC’s development vision and further advancing the state’s transformation agenda.

The governor highlighted key achievements under his administration, including the completion of smart green schools, primary healthcare centers, and roads, as well as a 600% increase in internally generated revenue.

Mbah assured residents that his switch to the APC would not disrupt ongoing projects but would instead enhance his administration’s capacity to deliver more effectively on its promises.

Mbah: joining APC not out of fear but for prosperity

    • Carnival-like reception for Enugu governor, elected, appointed officials into ruling party

The All Progressives Congress (APC) deepened its inroads into the Southeast yesterday with the defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah into its fold.

The party rolled out the red carpet to welcome Mbah, now the third APC governor in the five-state geopolitical zone.

From Vice President Kashim Shettima, who led the reception, to National Chairman Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) Chairman Hope Uzodimma, top party leaders and former governors turned out before a huge crowd to receive Mbah and his team.

Governor Mbah said his defection was not driven by fear but by a desire to lead Enugu and its people toward prosperity and align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda.

“We are not moving from a place of resentment or fear. We are confident of our future. We have no axe to grind, no personal point to make. But fairness, respect, and integrity must guide our choices for that future to be ours,” he said.

Describing President Tinubu as “a partner in purpose and a leader with the courage to make tough choices for lasting prosperity,” Mbah said his administration’s development philosophy aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Earlier in a town hall meeting, Mbah formally announced his defection before national and local APC officials, elected representatives, and political appointees.

APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, Deputy National Chairman (North) Alhaji Ali Dalori, and his southern counterpart Chief Emma Eneukwu were present.

The main event followed in the afternoon, where Shettima, Yilwatda, and other leaders formally received the governor.

Shettima described the day as “a great day for the nation and for Ndigbo,” quoting Kenyan scholar Ali Mazrui, who once likened the Igbo to “the Nigerian Jews — mobile, enterprising, and ambitious.”

“With the coming of Governor Peter Mbah, and with the continuous energy being exhibited by Governors Hope Uzodimma and Francis Nwifuru, I believe Ndigbo have come back to the mainstream of Nigerian politics,” Shettima said.

He praised Mbah as “a progressive through and through,” declaring him APC’s new leader in Enugu State.

“From our constitution, the governor is the leader of the party in his state. You are now the leader of the APC family in Enugu. We are one big family tied in a common destiny,” he said.

Shettima said defections by opposition party members do not only reflect deep cracks in their camps but underscore the strength of the APC.

He said: “Much has been said about the ongoing wave of defections to our great party.

“What the opposition has failed to do is look into the mirror to ask why the APC remains the preferred destination of Nigeria’s most visionary political actors.

“Their departures are not accidents; they reveal the cracks in the walls they built and the strength of the bridges we have constructed.

‘’The APC has become a political home where ideas find expression, where ambitions find direction, and where patriotism finds partnership.”

    Akpabio, Abbas, Yilwatda, others speak

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, APC Chairman Yilwatda, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, and Governors Uzodimma and Nwifuru said Mbah’s defection marked a new political chapter in the Southeast.

Presenting the party flag and symbolic broom to Mbah, Yilwatda said:

“Your Excellency, take this broom and sweep out the remaining PDP members into the APC. Governor Mbah has taken his people from Egypt to the promised land — from depression to progress.”

    Akpabio hailed Mbah’s performance, saying:

“What I’m seeing here, Enugu is even more beautiful than Abuja. The only place that compares is Akwa Ibom when I was governor,” he joked, drawing laughter.

Speaker Abbas described the event as “a celebration of unity and expansion,” saying APC was now positioned to take over the Southeast by 2027.

Uzodimma said the defection “further integrates the Southeast into national politics,” while Ebonyi Governor Francis Nwifuru urged Mbah to “forgive those who wronged you and carry everyone along.”

Former governors Rochas Okorocha, Orji Uzor Kalu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Sullivan Chime, as well as former Senate President Ken Nnamani and PDP state chairman Martin Chukwunweike, attended the ceremony.

    A scene to remember

The event began shortly after Shettima arrived at 4:13 p.m., accompanied by a powerful delegation of APC governors, National Assembly leaders, ministers, and other political figures, and virtually shut down parts of the state capital.

The number of vehicles conveying party faithful and guests caused gridlock along Presidential Road, Government House Avenue, Toscana Junction, and the High Court area of Independence Layout.

Thousands of residents, especially supporters, trooped out to witness what was described as a turning point in the political history of the Southeast, especially Enugu State.

Security was tight with combined teams of police, Department of State Security(DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The Ministry of Transport officials were on hand to manage the crowd on the major roads and the arena of the event.

Cultural troupes, frenzied drummers made the ceremony look like a carnival.

  • Why we left PDP for APC — Mbah

Why we left PDP for APC — Mbah

Enugu Governor Peter Mbah has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing the decision was not motivated by fear, resentment or personal ambition but by a desire to secure a stronger political alignment for the state and the Southeast region.

Speaking on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at a well-attended ceremony in Enugu titled: “Charting a New Course: Transition from PDP to APC,” Mbah said the move was “a conscious step toward a more compelling future” and an act of faith in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of national renewal.

“We are not moving from a place of resentment or fear. We are confident of our future. We have no axe to grind, no personal point to make. But fairness, respect and integrity must guide our choices for that future to be ours,” Mbah declared.

The Governor, who was one of the leading PDP figures in the Southeast, said leadership sometimes demands “difficult and even painful decisions in the service of higher principles and goals.”

According to him, the decision to move to the APC was not taken lightly, but after long reflection and consultation with his political team.

The Governor, who filled his APC membership card and was presented broom, revealed that the defection was a collective action involving members of the National Assembly, the State House of Assembly, the State Executive Council, all 17 local government chairmen, councillors, and over 80 per cent of political appointees and party executives in the state.

“For decades, the Southeast, especially Enugu, has stood firmly behind the PDP, showing loyalty that shaped the party’s success. Yet despite this history, our voices were too often disregarded when it mattered most. It has therefore become necessary to seek affiliation where our interests as a region are represented in the form of fair partnership,” Mbah said.

Mbah praised President Tinubu as “a partner in purpose and a leader with the courage to make tough choices for lasting prosperity,” aligning his administration’s development philosophy with the federal government’s Renewed Hope agenda.

“This move is bigger than politics,” he said. “It is about connecting Enugu’s destiny with the central hub of broader reforms shaping our nation. I have found in President Tinubu not just a leader of our nation but a partner in purpose.”

Highlighting his administration’s achievements, Mbah said Enugu’s transformation was visible in the construction of over 1,000 kilometres of roads, establishment of smart schools and health centres across all 260 wards, improved water supply, and a 600 per cent increase in internally generated revenue.

He also listed successes in security and infrastructure, including an AI-driven Command and Control Centre, 150 distress-response vehicles, and the revival of key assets such as Hotel Presidential and Nigergas.

Mbah reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to complete all ongoing projects, assuring citizens that his government’s priorities would remain people-centred.

“Our Igbo DNA does not change; our destiny does not change. What changes is that our vision now finds stronger reinforcement at the federal level. The progress you see today will not slow, and the projects we have begun will be completed as promised,” he stated.

The governor thanked the PDP for the platform it provided, acknowledging its historical role in the state’s development, but said the time had come for Enugu to align with the national mainstream for greater opportunities.

“We must stand for principles and institutions that honour transparency, trust and service to the people,” he said. “True leadership is about service to the people, not service to self. Principles, not personalities, must guide us.”

Mbah concluded by expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for his encouragement, saying the defection marks “the beginning of a new era of growth and progress” for Enugu State.

“Tomorrow is here,” the Governor said. “Let us gather with renewed hope to build the Enugu – and the Nigeria – that our children deserve.”

The event attracted former Senate President, Dr. Ken Nnamani; former Governore Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Barr. Sullivan Chime; APC National Deputy Chairman (North), Alhaji Alli Dalori and his Southern counterpart, Chief Emma Eneukwu; state chairman of PDP, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike and his executive members, members of the National Assembly from Enugu State led by Senator Osita Ngwu, among others.

    • Shettima, Yilwatda, Akpabio, Abbas  to receive governor
    • PDP won’t despair, says Makinde

Today’s expected defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is the beginning of another gale of movement into the ruling party by governors.

Mbah, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is moving to the ruling party with House of Assembly members, councillors, chairmen of councils and others.

His exit from the PDP will be followed by that of Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri, whose defection, it was learnt, had been finalised.

“He will move into the APC in a matter of days,” an official of his government said last night.

Another PDP governor of the Northeast has hinted at his movement to the APC.

“He is waiting for the final sorting out of details”, one of the governor’s aides told The Nation last night.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Obvwevori and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno moved to the ruling party with all their officials and appointees earlier in the year.

But Deputy Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, dismissed the PDP Governors’ defection.

He believes the party will not be distracted ahead of its next month’s convention in Ibadan.

Enugu will be aglow today with the presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima, leading a strong delegation including APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Abbas Tajudeen to the Coal City to present the APC flag to their new member.

Political leaders, traditional rulers and Enugu chieftains of the pan-Igbo group, Ohanaeze, yesterday rose in support of Mbah’s defection, hinging the move on the inability of the PDP to manage its achievements in the Southeast.

Ohanaeze Vice President Prof. Fred Eze and National Treasurer, Dr. Peter Eke, said in a statement that the defection would not affect the governor’s second-term ambition.

They applauded Mbah “for taking the bold step of joining the ruling APC,” adding that “this decision is both thoughtful and timely, considering the compelling need to attract more federal government projects to Enugu.”

They also reiterated the group’s commitment to governorship zoning in the spirit of fairness and justice.

They stressed: “We remain committed to upholding the long-standing zoning tradition for the office of the governor, in the spirit of equity, fairness, and justice in Enugu State.”

The Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Samuel Asadu, said the governor had earned national respect through his “trailblazing performance and grassroots-oriented governance” in the past 26 months.

“The traditional rulers and people of Enugu State have absolute trust in his judgment,” he said.

“Our support for the governor’s decision is blind to party lines.”

The ALGON Chairman in Enugu State, Okechukwu Edeh, said residents were ready to follow the governor’s political direction.

“Governor Peter Mbah is the political party Enugu knows today,” he said.

“We believe this is a wise decision, given that our voices no longer count in the other party.”

Former Enugu PDP Chairman Augustine Nnamani said he was not surprised by the mass exit, accusing the PDP of “mistreating and betraying the Southeast” by refusing to recognise Udeh-Okoye as the party’s National Secretary.

He said: “The PDP chose a few people in Abuja over the Southeast.

“Mbah’s exit is in line with our region’s earlier resolution to leave the party if our choice was not respected.”

With Mbah’s defection, the APC now controls three of the five Southeast states, while the remaining two are held by the Labour Party (LP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). The PDP, once dominant in the region, now controls none.

PDP won’t be intimidated, says Makinde

Governor Makinde said despite the defections, the PDP remains strong and will not be intimidated.

Speaking after the inaugural meeting of the PDP National Convention’s Transportation Subcommittee, Makinde said voters — not politicians — would determine the outcome of the 2027 elections.

He stressed that the PDP had weathered crises before and would survive this one:

“Challenges will come and go, but our goal is for Nigerians to have democracy and a party they can relate to.

“Defections don’t mean the house is falling apart. Democracy is about conflict, resolution, and resilience.”

Makinde assured members that the PDP remained a nationwide party:

“They can say what they like, but PDP is in every ward of this country.

“It may look difficult now, but when something enduring is being built, it often gets worse before it gets better.”

He said Nigerians did not want a one-party state: “PDP has always been a constant — either as ruling party or main opposition. We’re not going anywhere. This is the time to stand firm.”

On his alleged 2027 presidential ambition, Makinde said:

“I’m old enough to set an agenda for myself. Right now, our focus is to rebuild the party and deliver the best national convention ever in Ibadan.”

    Eradiri sets agenda for Diri

Former President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Udengs Eradiri, urged Governor Diri to use his expected entry into the APC to reconcile factions within the Bayelsa chapter.

He advised Diri to unite the camps of former Governor Timipre Sylva and Minister of State for Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri.

Eradiri said: “Your coming to the APC should help stabilise the party.

“You managed the PDP well; now bring that same peace and inclusiveness to the APC as its new leader in Bayelsa.”

All is set for the collapse of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State.

In a manner reminiscent of the defections that occurred in Delta and Cross River states earlier in the year, Governor Peter Mbah and all elected and appointive officers of the state are set to formally defect from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday next week.

The newly inaugurated Enugu State APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, confirmed the development to newsmen at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja after taking the oath of office yesterday.

The bug of defection might also have bitten Benue State with strong rumour that former governor of the state Senator Gabriel Suswam and erstwhile boss of the National Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Dr. Paul Orhii were set to defect from PDP to APC.

Nwoye said Governor Mbah, all his appointees and the entire state’s political structure would officially be received into the party on October 14.

He made the disclosure during a press briefing by the newly inaugurated Enugu State Caretaker Committee.

Describing Mbah’s defection as the dawn of a new political era for Enugu and the Southeast region, Nwoye said the governor’s coming into APC would be “a merger between transformation and renewed hope.”

“For the past 10 years, Enugu State has remained in opposition. But all that ends on Tuesday when Governor Peter Mbah declares for the APC. And he is not coming alone,” Nwoye said.

According to him, the defection will signal a “historic alignment” as Mbah will be joined by 260 councillors, 24 state lawmakers, National Assembly members, and the entire state executive council—an unprecedented political realignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Where Enugu goes, the Southeast goes. This marks the beginning of the Southeast’s political reawakening and full integration into national politics,” Nwoye said with a tone of confidence.

Commending the Governor Mbah’s performance in his last two years in office, Nwoye, who was the founding state chairman of the party, noted that his economic and infrastructural reforms had elevated the state to one of Nigeria’s top-performing states in internally generated revenue.

He added that the synergy between Mbah’s Transformation Agenda and President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Vision would accelerate development and economic growth across the Southeast.

APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, who inaugurated the seven-man caretaker committee for the party in the state, had earlier hinted of moves by the APC to strengthen its foothold in the Southeast.

The APC chairman charged the new Enugu leadership to consolidate the shock defection into a “lasting political conquest”

“APC is home for all. The person who came yesterday, today or tomorrow has equal rights.

“Our goal is simple: to expand, to win, and to deliver overwhelming victory in 2027,” Yilwatda said.

APC’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Emma Eneukwu, who is from the state, said the political development in the state marked the return of the Southeast region to national relevance.

“We will no longer play second fiddle. With Enugu in APC, the Southeast has found its voice again,” he declared.

There were strong rumours yesterday that Suswam, Orhii who currently serves as a member of the House of Representatives representing Agatu/Apa Federal constituency, Hon. Ojema Ojotu and former Benue North East Senator, Prof. David Iornem were set to join the APC in Benue State.

This was in spite of a statement issued by the media aide to Suswam dispelling the rumour that his boss had defected from PDP to the ruling party.

Banners and signposts announcing their official defection and pre-decamping dinner adorned major roads and streets in Makurdi, the state capital, yesterday.

It is the first time Suswam would defect to another party since joining politics in 1999.

The black cat, as the former governor is widely known first won an election to represent Katsina Ala, Logo and Ukum Federal Constituency in the House Representatives on the platform of the PDP.

After eight years in the House of Representatives, he was elected the governor of Benue State for another eight years also on the platform of PDP.

His first bid to go to the Senate, however, ended in a fiasco as he lost the election. He, however, made a second bid and won election into the Senate.

He had remained in PDP even after losing his re-election bid until yesterday when the news of his defection broke.

There was jubilation from Suswam’s massive camp of supporters yesterday on hearing that the former governor had defected to APC.

In Anyiin his country home and Ayilamo settlement, there was dancing and singing throughout the day, with shouts Dom Agya as Suswam is known in his ancestry home.

At press time yesterday, he was locked in a meeting with his supporters.

The Nation learnt that the meeting was meant to deliberate on the date for the defection ceremony.

But the media aide to Senator Suwswam, Bede Bartholomew, yesterday denied the claims that his boss had defected to APC.

Bartholomew however admitted that Governor Hyacinth Alia two days ago extended an invitation to Suwswam and other leaders for a banquet with him at Government House Makurdi.

A press statement he signed and made available to our correspondent yesterday reads: “Moments ago, I received telephone calls from well-meaning Benuelites and leaders alerting me to trending news on Benue’s social media space purporting that the former governor of Benue State, His Excellency Senator Gabriel Torwua Suswam,  is set to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) today and would be received by the Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Governor Hyacinth Alia, this evening at the Banquet Hall of the Benue State Government House.

“I debunk this unholy rumour with all vehemence as it doesn’t represent the current interests of Senator Gabriel Suswam or that of his supporters across the state and should be treated as a mere rumour and that’s all.

“What I know is that two days ago, the Governor of Benue State HE. Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia respectfully extended an invitation to Sen. Suswam, among other stakeholders, expressing his desire to attend a State Banquet slated for 10th October, 2025.

“It should be noted that as a former Governor of the State, Suswam is a stakeholder in the Benue project, thus his reason for accepting the invitation.

“There was no indication in the invitation letter that it was a political event or a decamping ceremony whatsoever.

“The former governor advises his supporters and well-wishers to disregard this rumour as it is baseless, aimless, and a lie from the deepest pit of hell.

“Suswam appreciates everyone who called in for further enquiries and concerns and wishes everyone a happy weekend ahead.

Defections: Blame no one for your woes, says APC as PDP kicks

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday took a swipe at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing the opposition party of being responsible for its woes as more of its members are dumping it for the governing party.

This came on the heels of plans by the PDP governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, and the entire elective and appointive officers of the state to defect to APC on Tuesday.

The PDP had on Thursday blamed the wave of defections from the party on APC, accusing the ruling party of engaging in intimidation and coercion of its elected members.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Debo Ologunagba, while reacting to reports of the planned defection of some governors elected on the platform of the party to the APC, accused the ruling party for its misfortune.

“The APC is orchestrating all of this through intimidation, through coercion, through blackmail,” he said.

But APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, waved off the PDP allegation, insisting that the opposition party was only crying over a self-inflicted problem.

Dismissing the PDP allegation, Morka said: “The PDP continues to ridicule itself by the boring, repetitive and baseless claim that APC is, somehow, intimidating or cajoling its governors and other senior members to dump their wreck of a party.

“The PDP is the sole maker of its own political predicament. The party is only harvesting well-deserved adversity from decades of political recklessness, mindless corruption, ruthless desecration of democracy, disgraceful failure of leadership, and destructive impunity that characterised its existence.”

Justifying the defection to APC, Morka argued that “the governors and members that are dumping the party in their numbers are doing so in exercise of their free democratic will, and wisely so, to mitigate against the devastating fate that Nigerians will deal the party in the upcoming 2027 elections.”

Mbah inaugurates 29-member committee to drive Enugu’s climate action plan

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has inaugurated a 29-member committee to implement the Enugu State Climate Policy and Action Plan (ESCPAP), marking another major stride in his administration’s climate leadership agenda.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony on Friday at the Government House, Governor Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the initiative underscores his administration’s unwavering commitment to addressing the global climate crisis through local solutions and sustainable development strategies.

He explained that the ESCPAP, launched on March 17, 2025, provides a comprehensive framework to promote low-carbon economic growth, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and build resilience against climate impacts.

“This plan positions Enugu as a leading subnational player in climate governance and sustainability across Africa,” Mbah said.

According to the governor, the newly inaugurated committee will provide strategic oversight, coordination, and technical guidance for the effective implementation of the state’s climate policy.

“The committee will ensure the successful delivery of climate mitigation, adaptation, finance mobilisation, and monitoring in line with state, national, and global climate commitments,” he stated.

Outlining its core responsibilities, Mbah said the team would drive sectoral coordination across ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs); strengthen climate governance; mobilise climate finance through green bonds, carbon markets, and development partnerships; and monitor progress through a results-based framework.

Under the mitigation component, the committee will promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, low-carbon transport systems such as electric and CNG vehicles, sustainable waste management, afforestation, and climate-smart agriculture.

For adaptation and resilience, it will conduct vulnerability assessments, develop local adaptation plans, and implement nature-based solutions for erosion and flood control. The committee will also promote clean cooking technologies, climate-smart infrastructure, and resilient livelihoods in vulnerable communities.

On governance and inclusion, Mbah said the committee would mainstream climate actions across all state policies while integrating gender, youth, and disability considerations. It will also intensify climate education, capacity building, and public awareness programmes.

The governor further directed the committee to develop a comprehensive Climate Finance Plan, attract domestic and international funding, and publish annual progress reports to ensure transparency and accountability.

He noted that the committee would brief the State Executive Council quarterly and submit an annual report to his office, urging members to demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and inclusivity.

“This committee is a key mechanism for translating Enugu’s climate vision into tangible action,” he added.

Responding on behalf of the committee, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Sam Ugwu, thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in them and pledged that the team would work diligently to deliver measurable outcomes for the state.

The 29-member committee is chaired by the SSG, Prof. Onyia, with Prof. Ugwu and the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Nathaniel Urama, serving as first and second vice chairmen. The Senior Policy Adviser to the Governor on Climate Policy and Sustainable Development, Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, serves as secretary.

Other members include representatives of key MDAs—such as Environment, Energy, Agriculture, Transport, Finance, and Health—alongside academics, civil society groups, youth and women representatives, traditional leaders, and climate finance experts.

Enugu youths urge Mbah to focus on governance

Some youths in Nkanu Nation, Enugu State, under the aegis of the Nkanu Youths Organization (NYO), have cautioned political leaders and groups against early endorsement of political office holders ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The youths maintained that while the zone is blessed with many capable leaders, premature endorsements breed division and distract from governance.

Speaking at a press conference in Enugu on Friday, the President of NYO, Comrade Dika David, urged stakeholders to focus on transparency, accountability, and good governance rather than early politicking.

He stressed that political endorsements must reflect genuine concern for the welfare of the people, not mere opportunism.

“Enugu State cannot attain the vision of a $30 billion GDP by stifling SMEs and reducing the purchasing power of the people through multiple taxation. Ndi Enugu are suffering silently, and the government must show empathy,” he said.

While acknowledging the right of individuals and groups to support leaders of their choice, the NYO President insisted that “endorsements at this stage are premature. What the people need right now is good governance, inclusive policies, and the actual delivery of democracy dividends.”

The group also highlighted prominent figures from the zone such as Chief Everest Nnaji, Chief Uche Nnaji, and Chief Samson Chukwu Nnamani, describing them as competent leaders who could equally steer the affairs of the state when the time comes.

Beyond politics, NYO stressed the importance of youth empowerment and human capital development, urging the government to prioritize capacity-building programmes alongside infrastructure.

“As the next generation of leaders, we are determined to play a decisive role in shaping the Enugu of tomorrow. Anything done for us without us is completely against us. Youths are not only the leaders of tomorrow; we are also stakeholders of today,” the group declared.

NYO further called on young people across Enugu State to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise, noting that the power to shape the future lies in their active participation in governance.
