•APC youths to Fayose: pay workers

Some concerned members of Redeemed Christian Church of God, Priesthood Parish, Onigari GRA, Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, have donated food items to needy civil servants in the state to save them from hunger.

The gesture, which was spearheaded by workers of Federal agencies and Ekiti State University (EKSU), was carried out at yesterday’s service.

It was designed to give the recipients some relief over their unpaid  six months salaries.

Food items distributed include rice, Semovita and vegetable oil, which the church’s Assistant Pastor, Anthony Olowonihi, said was carried out to identify with Ekiti civil servants “at this critical period”.

The President of the Men’s Fellowship, Oluwatoba Rotimi, appreciated the gesture, calling on other churches to emulate it.

The pastor in charge, Mrs. Bolaji Aribisala, said members should be their brothers’ keepers and should allow the brotherly love to continue.

The Ekiti All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Frontier yesterday described the hardship being faced by workers as “heart-rending”.

It called on Governor Ayo Fayose to find means to pay their salaries.

In a statement by its Coordinator, Dapo Ipoola, the APC Youth Frontier described the failure of the state government to pay the workers as “outrageously callous because the governor is taking his own entitlements such as N250 million security vote  as a well as N250 million running grant – totalling half a billion naira monthly.

The youth said the governor’s claim that the debt left behind by the immediate past administration can no longer be believed as that government also experienced paucity of funds, but managed the available resources well.

Ipoola criticised Fayose’s inconsistencies with debt figures being quoted but expressed satisfaction that the Debt Management Office has clarified the actual debt profile of Ekiti far less than figures reeled out by the governor.

He said: “If not sheer wickedness, the governor left the salaries of workers unattended to and concerns himself with building a flyover bridge; of what socio-economic importance is that project compared to the cascade of administrative tepidity and torpidity on ground?

“Why is the governor not coming out clean on the IGR of Ekiti? What has happened to the exorbitant tax fees mindlessly imposed? If the governor said he had discovered 500 ghost workers and the labour force is not being reinforced, what has happened to their salaries?

“We implore the governor to do the needful or sleep away with the unpredictable attendant consequences of this which shall be civil and he should learn how to make lemonade out of lemon.”

  • NCPC boss receives board members

Newly appointed Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Rev. Tor Uja, recently received Federal Commissioners on the board of the commission. Uja thanked the commissioners for the visit and informed them that he had made a resolution not to leave the commission better than he met it.

He said the former boss of the commission, Mr. John Kennedy Opara, did very well and as such must be appreciated publicly.

According to him:” He really worked hard. God will bless him”. He promised to organize a befitting sent- forth for him sometimes in July and would invite the board and stakeholders to grace the event.

He explained that he took over the leadership of the  NCPC at a very challenging moment when the country is facing serious economic recession.

However, he stated that Nigeria had done fairly well, but should look further than oil.

According to him: “Going Forward Nigeria has greater chances in future.”

Rev. Uja assured the members of board that the pilgrimage process would continue with their support.

He hinted that the commission was working towards airlifting about 20,000 pilgrims to the holy land this year.

The NCPC boss maintained that it is possible for Nigerians to be exposed to pilgrimage at least once in a life time.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Rev. Dr. Zion Ibenye, Federal Commissioner representing South East said they visited the new Executive Secretary to formally welcome him since his appointment and assumption of duty.

NURTW members get code of conduct

The Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has rolled out a code of conduct to guide the activities of its members.

Its chairman Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, announced this during the monthly meeting at the weekend.

According to him, the measures became necessary to curb alleged involvement of union members in illegal activities with the attendant negative effect on the image of the council.

The Lagos NURTW boss warned members to stay away from vices like cultism, robbery, hooliganism and anti-union activities

“I want to use this opportunity to tell our members to desist from any illegal act or shady deals that can dent the image of the union. Henceforth, branch/unit executives are to ensure that members comply with the code of conduct. If you noticed that a member of your branch or unit is of questionable characters or involved in shady deals, please report him to state council before he damage to the image of our union,” Agbede told the members.

He said the state council will deal with the leadership of any branch which fails to comply, as the executives of such branch will be dissolved and a caretaker committee appointed to oversee the branch

“Enough of this negative publicity; we shall not fold our arms and allow  a few disgruntle elements destroy our image,” he added and urged the media to cross check with the union before publishing information on anybody purported to be a union official found committing untoward acts.

APC members: probe boycott of Bayelsa rerun

Aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, yesterday, asked its national leadership to probe circumstances leading to the party’s boycott of the Southern Ijaw Constituency 4 rerun.

The members said allegations that some APC state officials were induced financially by some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officials to abandon the election is disturbing.

They were reacting to the easy victory of ex-Speaker of the House of Assembly Kombowei Benson in the rerun after a suit by the APC candidate,  Ebifaghe Oruminighe, annulled his last April 11 poll.

Acting under the auspices of Concerned Progressives for Development and Empowerment (CPDE), the officials said reasons given by the leadership for the boycott  were unattainable.

CPDE said there were strong allegations that some party executives collected about N80 million to abandon the poll.

It said the national leadership should investigate activities of the APC State Working Committee (APC).

The group led by Mr. Francis Diepreye, said the state leadership lacked the commitment to develop the party.

Diepreye said the manner the party lost the governorship election exposed the selfishness and incompetence of executive.

He said: “Our preliminary investigation showed that the APC sought the court order annulling the election of the ex-Speaker, Kombowei Benson and a rerun fixed for March 5, by INEC.

“The decision to withdraw at the last minute reinforced an allegation that a deal was sealed by the help of two ex-militant leaders, with the PDP. It is shameful and should be probed and sanctioned.

“It was discovered that after N80 million deal was sealed, it was hidden under a  feeble protest to INEC, alleging wrong timing and withdrawal from the race.

“We are also aware that the deal, which was done without the knowledge of ward and unit heads, led to disenchantment against the party.

“Some of our leaders claimed to have hated the alleged gross misconduct but refused to act.”

  • Apc to Fayose: we’ll defend our members

Apc to Fayose: we’ll defend our members

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has warned Governor Fayose that it would defend its members, against any planned attack.

The party warned the governor that there will be “a stiff resistance on the streets to defend APC members with all strength that our members can muster”.

In a petition by the State Secretary, Paul Omotoso, to the Commissioner of Police, Etop James and Department of State Services (DSS) State Director, Andrew Iorkya, entitled: “Complaint On Governor Ayodele Fayose’s Planned Mass Violence in Ekiti State”, the party said it was aware of clandestine plots by the governor to cause massive violent protest against DSS and APC members.

“Our complaint is not without foundation against the backdrop of the governor’s penchant for using state radio and television stations through inciting press releases to instigate public anger.

“On Monday, a member of the House of Assembly, Gboyega Aribisogan, was on Progress FM, inciting people and threatening to invade DSS office,” Omotoso said.

He added that “Fayose began his onslaught on the APC on Monday when his agents destroyed our gate and began intimidating members”.

“We have information that the governor has started mobilising Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) local chapters  on plans to storm the DSS office to protest the arrest of some lawmakers.

“We also have it on good authority that the governor plans to use militants who will work with local thugs to attack APC members in their homes and going by the recent wave of killings in Rivers State, we cannot sit and gloss over this evil plan.

“Knowing and understanding the violent nature of Governor Fayose, the APC members will have no choice than to employ self-defence to ensure security and safety of our members,” he concluded.

  • PDP, APC lose ‘members’ to SDP in Ondo

The camps of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) in Irele Local Government area of Ondo State at the weekend depleted as their members joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP). The defectors were mainly grassroot politicians, including six village heads from 10 wards.

They said their decision to defect to SDP was to enable them to work for the success of Dr. Olu Agunloye, who is aspiring to become the governor next year.

Mrs. Ibidun Balogun  from Ward 4  said they were forced to leave  because of the complacency of their former leaders.

She said  they  had neglected their plights.

Her words:”Many of us sold our goods and farm products particularly to support this PDP government,  but at the end of the day, it was neglect, backstabbing and victimisation while they also put on us heavy taxes and unfavorable policies.

“As at today, there are no meaningful developmental projects in Ode Irele and our people have been left to their  fate particularly on the total electricity blackout going to two years in the community and the Southern part of the state”.

The decampee expressed optimism that Agunloye, who was a former minister would be given the SDP ticket as its governorship candidate ahead of the November 26, poll in the state.

‘His holiness’ can’t die —Church members

    •Insist case was a frame-up

    •Neighbours: it’s a big relief

•Say we went through hell while he held sway

Members of the Rev King-led  Christian Pentecostal Assembly (CPA) woke up  yesterday in high hopes.

They were sure that after almost 10 years incarceration, their beloved church founder would finally breath an air of freedom with the Supreme Court expected to quash the death sentence received from the lower courts.

As early 7:00am, some female members were already in the church. They were wearing green T-shirts with black skirts and  green berets to match.

Another group wore white T-shirts and white berets.

They swept the floor, arranged the white plastic chairs in rows and generally tidied  up  the church, all in anticipation of holding a victory service.

However, the planned celebration was not to be: the apex court insisted that the man his followers call “His holiness” must end on the gallows.

By 3 pm, the church gate had been shut, the crowd thinned down, their hopes of ever seeing their G.O gone.

On adjoining streets, some residents gathered, discussing  the conviction in low tones.

Some were using their phones to browse through the net to confirm the authenticity of the news.

There was not a  single member of the church around.

But  even a  first timer would not miss the larger than life image of Rev King on the church signboard and the huge, gold colour  inscription of CPA on the black church gates.

Some of the residents spoke to The Nation still looking over their shoulders for King’s followers who are reputed for harassing people in the area.

The residents  described  King’s incarceration as a blessing to the street, recalling  their not too pleasant experience in the hands of the church members before his arrest and subsequent trial.

One of the residents said: “One day his members beat up my wife.

“I went into the church to ask them what happened. Immediately I went in, they rushed at me. They beat my wife so badly that she ran to the police station naked. At the police station, they told us to go and get a medical report from Isolo General Hospital. I went and got the report.

“I later asked my wife why the CPA members beat her up. She said some children threw  a banger inside the church. When the members came out, they did not ask who did it, but tried to take two of our children back into the church.

“She begged them not to take them away, but they refused. As a mother, she would not allow her children to be taken away. That was why they descended on her. I wanted to follow it up, but my uncle advised me not to go ahead with the case.He told me they were very dangerous. That was how I dropped the case.”

Residents said passers-by used to thread the street with trepidation when King still held sway, as his supporters were always suspicious of people and ever ready to vent their aggression at the slightest provocation.

People were routinely forced  to remove their  shoes to be allowed to walk  through the area.

Asked if that was till the situation now, the man replied: “No, it is much better now. People have peace in the street. The street is peaceful now. The CPA members don’t molest anybody anymore. ”

A landlord in the area said: “He who lives by the sword, will die by the sword” when told that the Supreme Court had upheld the death sentence given to King.

Relating  his own experience with the church members, the landlord said: “I know many of them because the buy things from me.

“I knew Ann very well before her death. Before the incident, it was harrowing for all of us staying in this area.

“At that time,  some of the houses you see here were under construction, so some of the bricklayers would sleep in the buildings. The members of the CPA would move from house to house on Sundays and forced people to attend service.

“They had no bathroom. It was just recently that they made provision for some.

“The church  members would come out and bath outside in broad daylight. To us, that was an abomination. Even up till now, some of them believe he would soon come back. I have heard them boast that when Rev King comes back, they  would deal with us.

“It is unfortunate that he has been convicted, but those who live by the sword will die by the sword. If he had been released,we would have abandoned our houses.”

King’s followers  are confident that he would not be hanged.

One of them who spoke with The Nation said: “His holiness cannot be killed even with the Supreme Court judgment. He said it long ago that no man is capable of touching a strand of hair on his head.

“The whole drama is a calculated plan by some people to bring his ministry down.  It started in June 2006 when His holiness asked cult members, herbalists and other people with shady character in the church to either declare for God or leave the church.

“After making the statement, some people who believed they were highly connected came to him and told him that they would blackmail him and make sure the ministry was brought down.

“Thereafter, this ‘frame-up’ came up. For you to know that the case was a frame-up, did they bring the dead bodies of the seven people that were allegedly killed to the court to serve as evidence?

“It was all a ruse. Those seven people in question are roaming about the street and we do see them here in Ajao Estate.  It was only Ann that died and it was these seven people that killed her. It wasn’t  His holiness that killed her as alleged.

“She was going to put on the generator when they set fire on it. When she was eventually taken to the hospital, they went there and used pillow to choke her to death.  That was how those people who vowed to deal with His holiness started carrying out their plans. But the truth is that they cannot kill him.”

Another member,  who simply identified himself as Sunny,  said though the judgment was contrary to their expectations,  they remain confident that he would come out unscathed.

“His holiness cannot be killed. He is more than a mere human being and cannot be killed by any mortal.

“We were waiting with high expectations that the case would be struck out. We held a vigil yesterday and went ahead to clean the church premises waiting for his return.  We didn’t have to pray for the case to be struck out at the vigil because we were convinced  that he would be released.

“The Supreme Court judgment cannot dampen our morale because we are convinced that he would not be killed. He is not a mere mortal like the rest of us. He will come back home at the appointed time  and by then, the people behind this whole thing will bury their heads in shame.”

Another member of the church called Obi said: “The judgment which is a human decision is not the final. A judgment that will supercede this one will come. We have total confidence in our leader and this is why we have not relented in our efforts to hold service.

“In spite of the judgment, we are going to have service on Sunday and celebrate him.  For you to know how powerful he is, he has been providing solutions to numerous people’s problems right from the prison walls.

“He does this using online medium. Right there in the prison, the officials don’t go close to him because of the enormity of the power he wields. If they can’t go close to him in the prison, how would it be possible for them to kill him? It is impossible.  I personally received divine healing through him before his arrest. I was having a terminal ailment and when he mounted the pulpit and pointed at my direction, the sickness vanished. This was in 2006 and till date the sickness has not come back.”

ASUU tasks UNILAG on members’ welfare

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos Chapter, on Friday urged the institution’s authorities to improve on the welfare of its members.

The union’s Chairman, Dr Adelaja Odukoya, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, expressed satisfaction with the authorities’ attitude toward provision of an enabling environment for effective teaching and learning in the university.

He, however, said there were still concerns in the area of welfare of the union’s members.

“You know before now we had issues with the university authorities, which, to an extent, has been largely resolved.

“The major challenge we are facing today as a union is that of accommodation for our members.

“A situation whereby a lecturer will be coming from far distance every morning to carry out his or her mandate every day has its effects on quality service delivery.

“I know it could be better and that is why we are calling on the school authorities to look into the issue and seek ways of finding a lasting solution to it,’’ the don said.

Odukoya said that one must have enough rest and less stress for his body to function well, and for him to be at his best.

He said the conclusion of daily academic activities late at night could amount to a disservice, not only to the lecturers, but also to the students and the university at large.

Odukoya, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science, urged the university authorities to reconsider their stand on the issue of annual leave for the union’s members.

He said that a lot of the lecturers were unable to go for their annual leave because of the various programmes that were being run in the institution.

“I still want the authorities to expedite action too in this area because we need the leave once in a while to rest, and to also do some other personal things.’’

The don said that the lecturers were doing a lot in the area of self-development by way of attending workshops and other developmental programmes.

Odukoya said plans were underway to organise leadership training for ASUU members in the university.

“The training is expected to hold in the various chapters of our universities nationwide.

“We are yet to have any particular date for the training, but as soon as we get directive from the national body, we shall commence,’’ he said.

  • ARIAN plans black book for errant members

The Association of Registered Insurance Agents of Nigeria (ARIAN) is to launch a black book that will contain names of agents found guilty of sharp practices, the President, Olamerun Gbadebo, has said.

Gbadebo, who made this known to journalists in Lagos, said the initiative, tagged: ARIAN Black Book, would make its debut in the first quarter of the year, adding that the book is intended to stem the menace of unethical practices by some members.

He said when the initiative becomes active, names of agents found guilty, would be sent to underwriters and recruiting firms for them to be blacklisted.

He said: “In our quest to eradicate sharp practices embarked on by some unprofessional agents, the association will, by first quarter 2016, launch a new initiative tagged: ARIAN Black Book.

“This initiative is to reduce unethical practices by some insurance agents by creating a platform and a dossier of any agent found guilty of any sharp practices to all the underwriters and prospective recruiting houses.”

He called on the public to join the agency trade, noting that the association is working to raise its membership to 20,000 by 2020.

He stressed that the association would consolidate on the work already initiated in the year, which is poised at moving it to lofty heights.
