IPMAN urges members to sell petrol at N87

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has urged its members to sell petrol at the official pump price of N87 per litre.

IPMAN also advised its members to stop patronising private depot owners selling above official rate of N77.66 per litre.

It urged the government to direct private depots to make the product available at the approved price.

Its Western Zone Chairman, Alhaji Debo Ahmed who spoke to reporters in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital yesterday on fuel scarcity, said his members should stop patronising depots that sell above regulated price.

Said he: “IPMAN should stop patronising depots that sell above the government approved price. Fuel to those depots is from the government and it is subsidized. They should sell it to us at government controlled price. If they don’t, that means we too cannot sell at controlled price. So our members should not buy from depots that sell above government price of N77.66.

“We really appreciate the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC)’s efforts in abating the fuel scarcity.

    Group laments injustice to members

A group, Ijaw Youth Leaders’ Forum Lagos (IYLF), has called for a focused and balanced leadership, urging President Muhammadu Buhari to look into the victimisation of some public office holders from Ijaw in federal agencies.

They made the appeal in a statement signed by its Chairman Ebimobowei Jeremiah and Public Relations Officer, Tuborke-ere Moni.

The group expressed worries over what it described as “selective victimisation” of public office holders from Ijaw, particularly in the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). It claimed that some of its leaders were being maligned with corruption charges, while other directors on whose table financial records passed through were being left out.

Listing the achievement of the former Director-General of NIMASA, the group urged the President to intervene in the matter.

He said: “The singling out of only Ijaw and South-South directors, such as the former NIMASA D-G, Mr. Patrick Akpobolokemi, for interrogation, detention and subjecting them to inhuman treatment is most regrettable in this administration of “change mantra”. The DSS and EFCC commando style of effecting arrest in this 21st Century only reminds one of the dark military days. Non Ijaw/South-South tribes were honourably invited and released after a few hours but Niger Deltans are denied access to their families and lawyers.

“While we are not against any effort to investigate or probe previous administrations and indeed take steps against the perceived scourge of corruption in NIMASA, we hereby state that the period covered by this probe is suspicious. Avoiding probes of all employments, appointments, promotions, pre-Akpobolokemi tenure clearly portrays the Ministry of Transport as having ulterior motive. We make bold to state that Akpobolokemi’s tenure witnessed unprecedented progress in the history of NIMASA as it recorded the highest output in income generation and other world best practice reforms that he brought to bear in the life of the maritime industry in Nigeria, including the global scholarship programme; the Nigeria Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP). The group noted that the reforms changed the lives of over 2,500 Nigerian youths across the country, as they received trainings at degree levels in Marine Engineering, Marine Surveying and Nautical Sciences, among otherS, in reputable universities around the world.”

The group also called for the opening of the Maritime University at Okerenkoko and NIMASA Science and Technical College, Okoloba which have remained closed for some time now, saying their continuous closure threatens their usefulness.

  • Association alleges gang up against members

The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has decried alleged gang-up against its members by the Committee of Chief Medical Directors, Medical Directors and Directors-General under the Federal Ministry of Health.

The National President of AMLSN, Alhaji Toyosi Raheem said it is quite unfortunate that “any time a privilege or right is given to others such as in the case of the recently approved entry point for our members and the need to adjust the levels for existing medical scientists to maintain seniority, some members of this committee would have one reason or the other not to comply with such circulars.”

Raheem spoke in Port Harcourt during the 51st Annual Scientific Conference and Workshop of the association which had the theme Combating Acute and Chronic Health Challenges: The Medical Laboratory as a Critical Tool.”

The AMLSN boss, who said that he had observed that “there are deliberate attempts to stagnate our members and even non-employment of fresh medical laboratory scientists needed to strengthen the laboratory services” further condemned a situation in which medical doctors set up laboratory facilities within their clinics and hospitals. He added that “this is a violation of the National Health Insurance Scheme.”

This practice, Raheem further said, denies AMSLN of its service fees, capitation and other entitlements. He, therefore, called on the Federal Ministry of Health to direct the committee made up of medical doctors “who are in the habit of using their positions to intimidate, oppress and suppress other health professional groups, especially medical lab scientists, to stop this practice.

Continuing, he said that in line with the Federal Government’s directive to the Ministry of Labour on how to avert industrial actions in the health sector, his association forwarded a position paper in which it noted that major causes of strikes are “impunity, disregard to rule of law and disobedience to court judgment, government circulars, approved scheme of service, gross and outrageous disparities and discriminations in salaries and allowances of physicians and other health professionals.”

While calling for the establishment of health directorate in the Federal Ministry of Health, he also demanded the implementation of all court judgments in favour of AMLSN, especially the most recent where all the reliefs sought by his association were granted by the National Industrial Court, Abuja against pathologists.

In his speech, the Chairman of Rivers State chapter of AMLSN, Dr Easter Nwokah stressed the importance of medical laboratory science in health care delivery saying that “it is a common knowledge that every clinical decision is based on, at least, 70 per cent input from laboratory investigation.”

Nwokah, who commended the Rivers State government for the tremendous commitments it has made in health care delivery, also pointed out the need for the creation of a directorate of medical laboratory services in the state service.

He also pointed out that the “non-existence of this directorate has militated against the enhancement in the practice of the profession as well as hindered effective and quality diagnostic service delivery.”

Also speaking, the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Austin Opara commended members of AMSLN for what they are doing in the health sector, adding that it was their efforts that helped Nigeria to combat Ebola virus disease last year.

Opara, who was represented by the Head of Department of Management, Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Dr Henry Ejor-Orusa said: “Just like ideas rule the world, ideas in medical laboratory will help in medical field,” adding that medical lab science is one profession where there is a fusion of science and technology.

The Keynote speaker at the event, Prof. Olufemi Oguntibeju of Cape Peninsula University, South Africa spoke on the theme of the conference.

  • NYSC members save lives in Kwara

NYSC members save lives in Kwara

Possibly a sign of things to come, members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have put many residents of Igbonna and Ikotun communities of Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State out of their health challenges.

How? They provided free medical service to the residents.

A medical team of Corps members reached out to ailing members of the communities, giving their time and expertise free of charge.

The programme is under the NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers.

In his remarks during the launch of the weeklong initiative, Oyun local government chairman, Alao Adebayo, an engineer, hailed the ingenuity of the NYSC management for organising the programme and for choosing his council.

Adebayo urged community leaders to “mobilise our people to come and utilise this free medical offer to better and improve their health conditions reminding them that ‘health is wealth.’”

He added that: “On our part as a government, we shall within our available resources be ready to provide everything necessary or required to make your five days and operation comfortably worthwhile.

“The coming of this free medical initiative at a time the nation just celebrated its 55th independent anniversary is to me symbolically auspicious.

“How else will you describe the sacrifice and commitment of this generation of you medical doctors who could engage in this social service despite other profitable offers that could be opened to them; if these attitudes of sacrifice and commitment are imbibed and sustained by our young ones, our nation will be better for it?

“Indeed, the medical practice in its entirety by the virtue and sanctity of human life it deals with is seen as a noble profession and the practitioners considered next to God in the work of giving and saving lives.

“Little wonder then, that this initiative which allows you to go round villages offering free medical services, readily calls to mind the biblical Jesus who was going about healing the sick and delivering the oppressed.”

Declaring the initiative open, Director General NYSC, Brigadier- General Johnson Olawumi disclosed that the corps would collaborate with World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), federal and state ministries of health to address the health challenges of Nigerians.

Other specific health partners the NYSC plans to partner with , he added include National Primary Health Development Agency (NPHDA), Society for Family Health (SFH), Family Health International (FHI) as well as non-governmental and international organizations.

He added that NYSC would also partner with Royal Heritage Health Foundation, Ilorin, Grace Project International, MTN Communications and Guinness Nigeria Plc.

General Olawumi who was represented by the state Coordinator of NYSC, Mr. Enyinnaya Henry said that the “programme is to mobilize corps medical volunteers in the provision of health intervention through diagnosis, treatment, referrals and proper prevention mechanism, thereby enhancing the general well-being of rural dwellers.

“Volunteer corps medical personnel, who will form the core of the team, will work as health intervention agents driving the wheel of the health initiative. This one-week health outreach has been designed to address the health challenges of our people.

“Our confidence in the success of this programme also lies in the fact that we have been able to secure the support of some stakeholders, who are either assisting us with their personnel or providing other material supports in the areas of drugs and medical equipment.”

Renounce Boko Haram sect membership, Army warns

The Nigerian Army has launched an appeal urging parents and family members to help convince members of the Boko Haram sect to renounce membership of the sect.

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, Army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman warned that now that the Army has identified all the hideouts being used by members of the sect, they only have the option of surrendering or facing the consequences of their activities.

“This is to warn all Boko Haram terrorists wherever they are, to desist from all acts of terrorism, surrender themselves and face the law now.

“We wish to inform them that we are aware of all their hideouts, camps and enclaves; they should follow their colleagues who have so far surrendered.

“Failure to surrender will result in serious consequences as our troops are fast closing up with them,“ Colonel Usman stated.

He further emphasized the need for citizens who have family or other personal ties to individual members of the Boko Haram sect to persuade such persons towards having a change of heart.

“We equally appeal to the parents, families and friends of all those involved in Boko Haram terrorists activities to kindly persuade them to desist and renounce their membership of the terrorist organization forthwith.

“We also wish to appeal to the good people of the North Eastern part of the country, in particular those of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States to prevail on these terrorists to renounce their evil ways immediately,” he added.

  • Scores of Kogi PDP members join APC

Scores of Kogi PDP members join APC

Scores of Kogi State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members and supporters have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the November 21 governorship election.

This is coming after the two  parties concluded their primaries last month.

During last Monday’s APC zonal rally at Ayingba, several PDP stalwarts, including the former House of Assembly Majority Leader Yakubu Yunusa, joined the APC.

APC’s governorship candidate, Prince Abubakar Audu promised them equal treatment and opportunity in the party.

The former governor urged the new members to work for the party’s victory in the election.

At Koton Karfe, Kogi Local Government Area, thousands of PDP members dumped the party.

The defection took place at Okparake Ward of Koton Karfe. The defectors were received by a former Commissioner and Deputy Director-General of Audu/Faleke Campaign Council, Saidu Akawu Salihu (aka SAS).

Salisu described the ceremony as the “final burial for the PDP” in the area.

The APC chieftain hailed the defectors for dumping the PDP, which he blamed for the state’s backwardness.

He advised them to vote  for Audu, who he added had been tested and trusted.

Salisu said: “Audu is the man we need now to come and clear the rubbish created by the PDP. He has all it takes to attract international investors to our dear state.

“Koto should not be left out of the change that is blowing across the country. “

  • Audu urges APC members to unite

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Kogi State , Prince Abubakar Audu, at the weekend, urged other aspirants to cooperate with him to enable the party win the November 21 election.

He said: “The victory is for all the aspirants.”

A statement by his media aide, Suleiman Abdulmalik, quoted Audu as saying the APC family was united and ready for the election.

The APC candidate said the party was posied to win the election.

He hailed the other aspirants for their efforts, adding that they projected the party in a good light.

Audu said: “I am reaching out to all my brothers and sisters. My emergence is indeed a victory for all the aspirants and our great party.

“The onerous task is how to win and rebuild our state, create jobs for our  youths and pay salary arrears. There are a lot to achieve.”

A chieftain of the APC, Alhaji Sanusi Omeiza Salami, congratulated Audu on his victory at the primary.

He said it was well deserved.

Salami urged the other aspirants to work with the winner to ensure the party’s victory in the election.

He said: “This victory is for all; hence, the need to build a united party, to uproot the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the league of the progressives.”

  • Oyo APC members await exco list

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State are “waiting anxiously” for the announcement of executive council members and local government caretaker committee members by Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

The names, it was gathered, will be announced “any moment from now”.

The announcement will follow payment of salary arrears, which is expected to be completed this week.

The government began payment of the four-month salary arrears last Wednesday.

May salary was paid on Wednesday; June on Thursday.

It is expected that the balance will be cleared this week in line with the agreement reached with labour leaders.

A source close to the governor said yesterday that Ajimobi had compiled the list of potential appointees with the party’s inputs.

But the governor has the final say on the portfolios.

The source explained that the appointees were drawn from the 33 local governments but that both the governor and the party agreed to stay action because of the outstanding salaries.

“Both the party and the governor thought that it would be better to delay the announcement till after salary arrears have been cleared to identify with the plight of the workers.

“But now that workers will be fully paid, the announcement will be made soon.”

The source added that the delay has helped Ajimobi save some funds that would have ordinarily gone into salaries and allowances for the appointees.
