  • Mercedes-Benz dominates premium segment

After the first six months of the year, Mercedes-Benz continues to be the leader among the premium car brands in a highly competitive environment worldwide, despite ongoing model changes.

From January to June, 1,134,729 cars were handed over to customers by Mercedes-Benz.

Unit sales decreased in the first half of the year primarily due to ongoing model changes for SUVs, the brand’s segment with the largest volume.

In the second quarter, Mercedes-Benz sold a total of 573,856 cars (-3.5 per cent). Sales momentum in those three months came primarily from the new compact-car models, including the new A-Class Saloon worldwide, and the new B-Class and new CLA Coupé in Europe.

In June, the Stuttgart-based company with the three-pointed star sold 196,230 vehicles (-3.7 per cent). Mercedes-Benz maintained its market leadership in the premium segment in the first half of the year in markets including Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Greece, South Korea, Japan, Australia and Canada.

“After a challenging first half of the year, Mercedes-Benz continues to be at the top of the premium segment. We are particularly pleased with the great popularity of the new compact models. In the third quarter, we anticipate sales momentum from the new SUVs with the star,” said Britta Seeger, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales.

“In July, two real customer favourites will be in our showrooms: the new GLC and the GLC Coupé. The GLC, which has been the highest-volume model in our SUV portfolio for several years, comes with the latest intelligent driver assistance systems just like the GLC Coupé and is equipped with MBUX as standard,” Seeger said.

  • Mercedes-Benz sells above 560,000 vehicles

Mercedes-Benz closed the first quarter of 2019 with 560,873 passenger cars sold worldwide (-5.6 per cent).

For the third year in a row, sales in the first quarter were therefore, well over 550,000 units.

In March, 227,644 vehicles with the three-pointed star were delivered to customers all over the world (-4.1 per cent). The first three months of the year featured important model changes in the highest-volume SUV and compact-car segments.

The company expects an increasing vehicle availability in the next months and therefore, global sales to increase slightly overall in 2019. Since the beginning of the year, Mercedes-Benz has maintained its market leadership in the premium segment in Germany, United Kingdom (UK), France, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Denmark, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Brazil and other markets.

Britta Seeger, member of the board of management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz cars marketing and sales said: “We are delighted with the best quarter ever for Mercedes-Benz in China and the successful market launch of the new B-Class in Europe. The first three months of the year were challenging worldwide due to the ongoing model changes for SUVs and compact cars.

“In the coming months, further highlights of our current model offensive at Mercedes-Benz will be launched. The CLA Coupé, for example, will be available in our showrooms in May. From the middle of the year, the ungraded generation of our very popular midsize SUVs GLC and GLC Coupé will then be available at our dealerships.”

  • Mercedes-Benz delivers 180,000 vehicles in January

Mercedes-Benz has delivered 180,539 vehicles to its customers all over the world in January. The second-best start to a year for sales was influenced by important model changes in the high-volume Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and compact-car segments. In particular, the model change of the B-Class, CLA and GLE, each with a double-digit sales decrease, had a negative impact on total unit sales worldwide despite the ongoing high demand for the cars with the star.

The company expects the model changes to affect deliveries in the first quarter. With a high degree of probability, the full year will be affected also by exogenous challenges and geo-political risks.

At the same time, Mercedes-Benz Cars assumes that the model offensive will lead to sales growth in the second half of the year. The company with the three-pointed star therefore expects to slightly increase its worldwide unit sales overall, and to achieve another record in 2019.

Last month, Mercedes-Benz defended its market leadership in the premium segment in markets including Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Portugal, Denmark, Finland, Czech Republic, South Korea, the United States, Canada and Brazil.

“With more than 180,000 vehicles delivered, Mercedes-Benz has started the year 2019 with the second-best January ever. Last month was below the strong figure for the previous year; this was in line with our expectations, however, due to important model changes. With the B-Class, the CLA and the GLE, we look forward in the coming months to the new generations of models very popular with our customers and expect the model offensive in our high-volume segments to provide significant sales impetus,” said Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales.

Seeger added: “2019 will be a challenging year for the entire industry. But we expect to inspire our customers with new models – especially in the second half of the year – and therefore aim to achieve a slight increase in unit sales and a new record in the full year.”

  • Mercedes-Benz enters last quarter with sales record

Mercedes-Benz  started the fourth quarter with a new record in unit sales.

Worldwide, the brand delivered 190,021 vehicles, surpassing the previous best October unit sales from last year by 3.9 per cent.

In the first 10 months of the year, deliveries of 1,905,108 units by Mercedes-Benz were slightly above the high prior-year level (+0.3 per cent).

As planned, progress was made last month with worldwide vehicle availability in order to meet the ongoing high demand for the cars with the star.

However, unit sales continued to be affected by model changes. In the past month, the brand has maintained its market leadership in the premium segment in the Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Canada and the USA markets.

“Thanks to the worldwide intensive efforts of the entire Mercedes-Benz cars team, we started the fourth quarter with a new sales record. We will continue to drive this positive development forward together until the end of the year. Our goal is clear: We want to delight our customers with their desired cars as quickly as possible,” said Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales.

“The new C-Class Coupé and Cabriolet are already having an impact: More than 12,500 dream cars delivered worldwide ensured a golden October for the Coupés, Cabriolets and Roadsters from Mercedes-Benz. In Germany alone, unit sales of those models posted a substantial increase of more than 25 per cent,” Seeger said.

  • Mercedes-Benz records 1.5m sales

Mercedes-Benz said it delivered 1,512,268 vehicles to customers worldwide in the first eight months of this year, thus setting a new record of 1.1 per cent.

Never before in the company’s history were such sales made earlier in the year.

Mercedes-Benz sold 155,918 (-8.5 per cent) vehicles worldwide in August, the 30th consecutive month with global sales of more than 150,000 units due to the ongoing strong demand for cars with the three-pointed star.

As expected, there was an impact on unit sales in August from challenges relating to vehicle availability, including model changes and delays in vehicle certification in some markets. Nevertheless, Mercedes-Benz defended in the first eight months of the year its position as the best-selling premium brand worldwide.

“I am delighted that Mercedes-Benz reached the mark of 1.5 million cars delivered earlier than ever in the year. As a strong team, we will continue to work on meeting the ongoing high demand for our vehicles, also again in terms of delivery. And with the EQC model, we have presented the first fully-electric Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) of our EQ product and technology brand to the world public in Stockholm. We will set additional markers and impulses in the market with the EQC,”Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales, said.

In Europe, Mercedes-Benz sold 54,989 vehicles in August (-10.7 per cent). In the first eight months of the year, sales totalled 597,347 units (-3.9 per cent). In Germany, the domestic market, Mercedes-Benz delivered 21,442 vehicles with the three-pointed star in August (-14.8 per cent) and a total of 195,163 cars were handed over to customers in Germany in the first eight months of this year (-4.2 per cent). In France, Spain, Sweden, Poland and Denmark, more cars with the star were sold in the first eight months than ever before in that period.

In the Asia-Pacific region, demand for Mercedes-Benz models in the first eight months of the year led to a new record of 639,184 units sold (+9.8 per cent). Last month, the brand with the star delivered 72,342 vehicles in that region, which is just slightly below the prior-year level (-1.3 per cent). In China, the biggest market, a new high for an August was achieved with sales of 53,295 cars (+5.5 per cent). So far this year, 446,075 vehicles have been handed over to customers – more than ever before in the first eight months of a year (+13.9 per cent). Mercedes-Benz achieved additional sales records for the first eight months also in Japan, India, Thailand and Malaysia.

The E-Class Saloon and Estate set a new record with sales of 25,367 units last month (+0.4 per cent). Since the market launch of the current models, more than 700,000 customers worldwide have been delighted to receive their new E-Class Saloon or Estate.

Mercedes-Benz increased its sales of the S-Class Saloon in August by 30.3 per cent to 5,254 units. From January to August, more than 53,000 units of the S-Class Saloon were sold (+26.6 per cent).

  • Davido’s presence electrifies NYSC Camp

Soldiers, police and the officials of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had a Herculean time controlling corps members when popular musician, David Adeleke entered the Orientation camp in Iyana Ipaja on Thursday after the opening ceremony of the three week orientation programme for 2,152 2018 Batch B Stream II corps members.

The graduate of music from Babcock University was greeted by a crowd of cheering corps members who almost mobbed him as he came out of a white Mercedes Benz with a Police Force plate number PF 413-S.

The NYSC’s Coordinator, Prince Mohammed Momoh’s best effort to avoid commotion as a result of the star’s presence proved abortive as corps members surrounded his office screaming with excitement after soldiers and officials managed to get him in.

Davido dressed in the NYSC ceremonial uniform signed the NYSC oath for corps members admidst camp officials and soldiers.

The officials had to summon the corps members to the parade ground with the beagle to draw them away from the State Coordinator’s office.
Afterwards he was brought out to the corps members who had been made to sit on the parade ground. He refused to stand on a makeshift stage brought for him but preferred to stand if front of his peers instead.

He told them to stay motivated in serving their country.

“Stay motivated; I love you all,” he said before he was whisked away.

In an interview with journalists, Davido said he chose to serve three years after graduation because he was still young.
“I am still young and I want to spend my time as a youth to serve my country. I am corper like any other and I think I can withstand the pressure.

Corps members and even others who sell in the Mammy Market ran around as his car left the camp. In his characteristic way, he threw a wad of cash in the air which made some stop the pursuit to scramble for the money. But others still went on until the car left the premises.

Some corps members described the experience as exciting, while some others felt it was unnecessary.
“Today was like the bomb. Lagos is the best camp. The best thing Davido came to camp. It was amazing.

Being a celebrity doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go to school or serve. It is just to promote our country that no matter what you are go to school and serve your father’s land,” said Victor Adebiyi a graduate of Business administration
    from Ekiti State University.

Another corps member, said it was okay that the NYSC was cautious about Davido’s presence in camp because of the distraction
” This is the best they should have done.

Even if he is here in camp it would cause a lot of distraction because many people would want to mingle with him,” he said.
However, Tolani Tells, a Psychology graduate, felt the corps members should not have been kept on the parade ground because of the music star.

“It was embarrassing to me as a person. I see it as demeaning to me.

You won’t tell me to sit on the floor because someone is coming. He went to school like I did. I even spent six years for a four-year course; I spent more years in school than he did. I didn’t see him when he came to register and life did not end so if I didn’t see him today, it wouldn’t matter,” she said.
