Mercedes-Benz dazzles in Frankfurt Motor Show

Mercedes-Benz has again put up a spectacular display at the famous International Motor show, popularly known as the IAA (International Automobile Ausstellung). The show, which usually holds in Frankfurt, Germany for passenger cars, is a tremendous success, writes TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO

While brands from all over the world were adequately represented, showcasing new and improved models, Mercedes-Benz took no prisoners in its impressive and innovative display of its “Dream Cars Collection” which were featured in no less than three world premiers, along with a number of motor show premiers.

The Mercedes-Benz’ theme was ‘Digitalisation’ and focused in particular on ‘Speed’. This is evident in the Mercedes-Benz show car “Concept IAA- Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile.”

According to Dr Dieter Zetsche, the Chairman, Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz cars, at the Mercedes-Benz and Smart press conference, the show car is the first transformer from Mercedes-Benz away from the movie screen. The Concept IAA is a four-door coupe which, not only embodies two cars in one, but also irresistible design elements which switches automatically to aerodynamic mode when the vehicle reaches a speed of 80km/h whilst numerous aerodynamic measures alter the shape of the vehicle. It offers new touch-based functions, the design of the S-Class and S-Class Coupe is maintained, and definitely predicts what the interior of the business saloon might look like in the not so far future.

There was also a double feature from Mercedes-Benz and AMG. After Ola Kallenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler, Mercedes-Benz Sales described them as ‘a representation of pure lust for life’, he explained that, evident in the two SUV coupes- the GLE Coupe and the forthcoming GLC coupe, Mercedes-Benz is delivering the perfect mix of power and elegance.

With the C-Class Coupe, the fascination begins with its revolutionary design. The C-Class Coupe boasts lightweight construction, excellent aerodynamics, and efficient engines thereby producing high performance.

The AMG C 63 Coupe, on the other hand, is the sportiest C-Class ever with far reaching technical modifications, while the driving performance is taken to new heights.

The beat of the production coupe is more “Drum and Bass,” while the look of the AMG is clearly “Rock ‘n’ Roll. However, both variants drive as amazingly as they look. There are also more convenient functions, and double performance is certain. This dream car is set to arrive at showrooms sometime in 2016, and the Mercedes-Benz version of the C-Class Coupe will arrive about four weeks earlier.

More cars on display were the new Mercedes-Benz GLC, the new generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC and the Mercedes-Benz V-Class AMG line.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLC has the outstanding characteristic safety high-tech assistance systems and energy efficiency and performs impressively in all operating conditions. Showing how its vehicles can be individualised to exceptionally high standards, products from Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH on GLC 250 d 4MATIC model were exhibited.

For the new generation Mercedes-Benz A- Class, the range of available engines has been increased, and the conflicting aims of sporty performance and enhanced comfort have been reconciled.

With revised gear ratios, aerodynamic fine-tuning and the new dynamic select driving modes which raise the overall performance to a higher level, the Mercedes AMG A 45 4MATIC entry-level model is the most powerful compact sports model in the world.

The line of Mercedes-Benz V-Class AMG was another awesome display. It has new additional comfort features e.g. the largest panoramic roof in the mid-size van category. It clearly expresses the unique and evolutionary design of the Mercedes-Benz MPV.

More interestingly, Dr Zetsche explained the expansion of the S-Class to six more models following the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet. The new Cabriolet is the first open-top luxury four-seater from Mercedes-Benz since 1971. Offering a sensual and exclusive design with the S-Class cutting-edge technology, it embodies a comprehensive warmth and wind protection concept which includes intelligent control for convertibles.

In addition, Mercedes-Benz introduced a first in its history, a luxury convertible in the Mercedes-Benz model range. The Mercedes-Benz-AMG S 63 features AMG performance 63 4MATIC all-wheel drive with rear-based torque split as standard, among others, making it the ultimate dream car.

The new Smart Fortwo and Smart Forfour were not left out in the presentation, as DR Annette Winkler, Head of Smart revealed more about the fresh features. These include; the new combination of turbo engine and dual-clutch transmission, and a “wonderfully” smooth gearshift. Also introduced was the new eye-catching and extremely spacious convertible. “… this new Smart is the most affordable convertible in the world,” Dr Winkler affirms.

‘The new Mercedes-Benz GLC has the outstanding characteristic safety high-tech assistance systems and energy efficiency and performs impressively in all operating conditions’

Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Group Research and Mercedes-Benz cars Development, Dr Thomas Weber also spoke at the Press conference. According to him, “Every IAA motivates our sector to new superlatives… while others talk about new ideas for the luxury class, we have actually delivered. We want to offer our customers, not only the best car, but also the one that is the best match for him or her.” Talking on what the S-Class variants which are in the market have in common, he mentioned: first class comfort and safety, plus a stunning appearance. Noting that while the S-500 stands for exceptional efficiency, the AMG S 63 Coupe stands for a combination of luxury and performance, the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 embodies the classic S-Class attributes in their most exclusive form.

Rounding off his speech, Dr Zetsche said “…digitalisation does not just accelerate our processes for show cars; it does the same for our production vehicles too. We are digitalising our entire value chain- from R & D, through production to sales, and it is paying off.  Mercedes-Benz continues to break records… and we are growing profitably. The most important reason for that is; our line-up is more fascinating and more diverse than ever, and our product offensive continues.”

Hosting its various markets from around the globe, including Weststar Associates Ltd, the Authorised Distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Nigeria, Mercedes-Benz ensured the experience was an interesting and exciting one. The level of organisation and preparedness was remarkable, making the events memorable.

  • Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA: Frankfurt motor show concept previews future Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA: Frankfurt motor show concept previews future Mercedes

The Frankfurt motor show is also known as the ‘IAA’ (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, since you asked), so it was about time someone did a car with the same name.

That someone, perhaps inevitably, is Mercedes-Benz. And in the case of its latest concept, IAA stands for Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile.

It justifies both those elements to its name with a body that extends at higer speeds. Normally, it’s 5040mm  long – but above 50mph the rear body extends to a total length of 5430mm.

This helps it slip through the air with a Cd of just 0.19, aided by movable elements in the grille and front bumper which aid airflow around the arches and beneath the car.

Toss in a 275bhp plug-in hybrid powertrain and you’ve got a car which can surge past that 50mph mark with ease – as well as achieving up to 191.6mpg at the pumps.

But the IAA is not just a futuristic concept car. Its styling has more than a touch of the four-door coupe to it – and indeed it’s the broadest hint yet at what the next CLS will look like.

The IAA’s interior also previews the sort of cabin treatment you can expect when the CLS and next E-Class hit the streets. The concept has a 100mm longer wheelbase than the current version of those two, suggesting that Mercedes is working towards a major increase in passenger space.

“It shows, in a host of details, what our customers can look forward to in future production models,” confirmed Mercedes’ marketing boss Ola Källenius. All will be revealed as the Mark III CLS moves towards production in 2017.

  • Mercedes-Benz GLA shows class

    Mercedes-Benz GLA shows class

Mercedes-Benz rounds off the extensive Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) portfolio with the introduction of the new GLA, which is now available in the Nigerian auto market, courtesy of Weststar Associates Limited, the authorised general distributor of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Nigeria, writes TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO

The GLA-Class is the fourth of a total of five new compact models from Mercedes-Benz. It is progressive in design, serene in day-to-day motoring and has good off road capability, thereby interpreting the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment in convincing style.

Lovers of the distinguished brand will appreciate the rear seat backrests that can, not only be folded down completely, but are adjustable for angles if required. Due to the low loading sill and the wide tailgate, which open and close automatically as an option, making the interior flexible and variable, the large luggage compartment (421 – 1235 litres) is well laid-out and can be loaded without difficulty.

The low greenhouse, raised vehicle body and large wheel arches give the GLA great appeal. The prominent and self-assured upright front end with a central star lends a muscular and superior impression to the GLA. Powerdomes structure the bonnet as sporty features, and the twin-louvre grille accentuates the vehicle’s width. An impressive front aspect is ensured by the headlamps and LED daytime running lamps. This iconic Mercedes-Benz design feature has been developed further using tri-functional fibre-optics, and gives the vehicle its characteristic light signature. The front bumper features diamond-pattern grilles in front of the cooling air intakes. A simulated underguard at the front and contrasting dark-grey cladding all-round emphasise the SUV characteristics of the GLA. This cladding extends around the bottom edge of the vehicle like a frame and provides protection against stone impact.

A number of measures have also been taken to reduce wind noise in the GLA. These include a multi-level door sealing concept, additional sealing of the joint between the tailgate and the roof and side seals on the tailgate. Particularly, rigid window frames prevent the airflow from pulling on the doors at higher speeds, and reduce vibrations. External noise has also been minimised by the low A-pillar step mentioned above and by exterior mirrors connected to the body by a stem.

The interior has a particularly high feel of quality that is achieved by the contours, and the choice and combinations of high-grade materials. The dashboard consists of an upper and lower section, allowing surface structures that are different in look and feel. Matt and glossy 3D geometries (graining) create an attractive light effect. The three-dimensional trim section of innovative membrane, aluminium, modern touch to the interior. The matt satin finish of the wood trim further underscores the modern character and makes the surfaces particularly pleasant to the touch.

The large, free-standing display has a high-gloss display facing in piano-black and a flush-fitting surround in silver-shadow. This gives the display a particularly high-quality look. A 3-spoke steering wheel with 12 function keys and a galvanised chrome clasp feature as standard. On request a sporty instrument cluster version with two tubes is available.

The wide choice of seat upholsteries in material (e.g. leather, fabric, fabric/leather) and colour combinations allows plenty of scope for individualisation. Sports seats with integrated head restraints are available as an optional extra.

Its robust body structure and the variable interior concept guarantee plenty of recreational enjoyment. Rough terrain, loose ground, unsurfaced gradients – all of these are no problem for the GLA.

The GLA is optionally available with the new generation of 4MATIC all-wheel drive, featuring fully variable torque distribution. This all-wheel drive system excels with high traction reserves and outstanding agility, combined with superlative driving safety and energy efficiency. The components of the new 4MATIC include the power take-off to the rear axle, which is integrated into the 7G-DCT automated dual clutch transmission, and the rear-axle gear unit with integrated, hydraulically actuated multi-disc clutch. Additional benefits of this design are a lower system weight than is available from the competition and high efficiency.

Models with 4MATIC are equipped with Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) and an off-road transmission mode as standard. DSR is activated by a control button in the centre console, and assists the driver on demanding downhill stretches by maintaining a slow, manually selected vehicle speed within the physical limits when negotiating downhill gradients. This is done with the help of the engine and transmission control systems, and by specific braking intervention.

With the GLA, yet another model series is set to become the leader in its segment with respect to aerodynamic efficiency. It has a Cd value of 0.29 with outstanding fuel consumption from around 60 km/h to 0.66 m2.

The GLA 180 features a four cyclinder engine with a 1.6 litre engine delivering 80kW and 260Nm of torque and is equipped with 7G-DCT. The GLA 45 AMG still holds the pole position in relations to driving dynamics: it accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250km/h. We sum up this approach in one word: blue efficiency, which means with the GLA, one is only burning fuel when necessary. In addition, every GLA is fitted standard with ECO start/stop function- it temporarily shuts down the engine when the vehicle is stationary.

The latest multimedia generation deployed in the GLA also boasts new functions and additional applications, which are optional. In combination with Audio 20 CD (standard) and Comand Online (optional extra) which has also been extended, the head unit can also be switched to an off-road display. The steering angle, the selected off-road transmission mode and a compass are displayed there. The roll angle in degrees, the gradient in percent and activation of Downhill Speed Regulation DSR are also indicated.

Numerous driving assistance systems offer support in the GLA and reduce the driver’s workload. Standard-fit features for the SUV include Attention Assist drowsiness detection and radar-based Collision Prevention Assist with adaptive Brake Assist, which now helps to avoid collisions from a speed as low as 7 km/h.

As an SUV, the new GLA combines the key design values of Progression and Tradition, and is the SUV of the future. It is an all-rounder with hallmark Mercedes-Benz SUV genes, but more youthful, sculptural and full of subtle drama.

  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class sales hit 2.4m

    Mercedes-Benz C-Class sales hit 2.4m

Sales of the preceding model of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class that was launched globally in 2007, have hit a total of over 2.4 million. It is, therefore, no news that the Mercedes-Benz C-Class delivers impressive driving dynamics and takes aesthetic motion to a new level, thereby setting standards for the medium size category on many fronts.

Its great load capacity, sensuously clear design, sporty interior and high class appeal, represent a clear lifestyle of elegance and ultimate refinement. The C-Class has a breathtakingly beautiful face with an aerodynamic design for even more efficient motoring. It is also equipped with new suspension technology and many innovative system options.

The German brand continues to push for more fresh and youthful interior designs. The vehicle’s character has clear design and high quality interior. It has been designed on a cost-conscious fence with the Mercedes-Benz family, balancing enough luxury to justify the three pointed star with the affordability to make it the most popular model in the range. The front section defined by design and equipment line – including classic 3D radiator grille or sporty design with central star – features large air intakes and sharply defined headlamp contours (day and night) to present the self-assured classic face of the new C-Class Saloon.

The strong visual impact of the C-Class Saloon exterior is continued in the interior. High-quality finish and materials, cultured sports styling, a tasteful colour scheme and intelligent details, create an atmosphere of easy poise and assurance. The brand had used premium materials for the door panelling and the instrument panel, which add to the overall unmistakable feeling of modern luxury.

The efficient and high performance engineering incorporated in the car delivers a higher level of driving pleasure. In the petrol range, the output of the entry-level C 180 is 115 kW/156 hp with a maximum torque of 4.5 percent from 220 to 250 Newton metres, and an output of 135Kw/184 hp with a torque peak of 300 Newton metres from 28100 rpm for the C 200. The engines considerably improve the performance and fuel consumption of the four-cyclinder models. When accelerating from standstill to 100 km/h, the C 200 is 0.5 seconds faster than its predecessor.

The C- Class model incorporates a raft of further measures that help reduce the impact on the environment. The petrol engine measures such as the combination of exhaust gas turbo charging with direct injection and an enhanced combustion process reduce both fuel consumption and emissions.

The C-Class has Artico man-made leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, keyless Go starting function, 7G-tronic Plus Cruise Control, three-mode ambient interior lighting, Audio 20 CD with touch pad and a multi-function screen that incorporates satellite navigator, Bluetooth audio and phone connections and digital radio. As for safety, Mercedes-Benz has all C-Class models fitted with nine airbags, Agility Control with selective damping system, LED headlamps and, a first for the class, autonomous emergency braking as standard.

The model offers a clear design and a host of technical innovations, exemplary emission and fuel consumption values that set a new standard for affordability in the luxury market- thanks to the Eco Start/Stop function, as well as a comprehensive scope of standard equipment i.e. the Mirror Package with its electrical folding exterior mirrors, and interior and exterior automatic dimming mirrors.

The C-Class is available at any of Weststar Associates’ dealerships in the country.

  • Self-driving cars and accidents

    Self-driving cars and accidents

When the self-driving car was first introduced officially a couple of years back, the incidents of auto-crash were expected to become a thing of the past.

Meanwhile, the new innovation is not impeccable in its self as faults are beginning to emerge. These faults are either man-made or failure in the part of technology.

According to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), in less than thirty years self driving cars will make up 75% of all cars on the road.

And these would raise the question of how many human beings are ready to commit their lives to the care of a car driving itself through the use of radars.

The IEED also projected that the number of more autonomous cars by 2040 will provide world traffic lights; stop signals or any visible signals.

“Intersection equipped with sensors, cameras and radars that can monitor and control traffic flow to help eliminate drivers’ collision and promote a more efficient flow of traffic,” said Dr. Azim Eskandarian of the IEEE.

It was believed that the production of more self-driving cars will bring about decrease in accident rate, reduction of fuel consumption and decrease in traffic jams.

We also would not forget the lacuna of job unemployment that would be left open across the global.

But on the contrary, a couple of accidents have been recorded. Maybe not at the same rate as in the case of manned cars anyways.

It was recently reported that four out of the about 50 self-driving cars rolling in California were involved in accident since September when the state issued permits to companies to test them on public roads.

Two of the four cars involved were reportedly in self driving mode and Google, a major partner in the production of the cars, would not discuss the incidents in details.

In an October 2014 accident involving Delphi, the front of its 2014 Audi Sq5 was moderately damaged when hit from the side by another car while it was waiting to make a left turn.

In a statement, it claimed that since September, cars driving on streets near its headquarter in mountain view had a handful of minor fender benders, light damages and no injuries.

Google, who blamed the accidents on female drivers also added that the accidents were caused by human error and inattention.

According to reports, five other companies have testing permits and they all said no accident so far.
