My success a testament of not giving up – Mercy Aigbe

Actress and filmmaker Mercy Aigbe has spoken about her career journey, joys and responsibilities of motherhood, describing it as her greatest source of pride.

In a recent interview on The Morayo Show, Aigbe emphasised her reliance on faith to navigate the challenges of motherhood and life in general.

“Wherever I am today is a testament to me not giving up. Being a mother is actually what I am most proud of. I just love being a mother, and I think it is a huge blessing that God has placed the responsibility on me to nurture another human being, and I don’t want to fail at it,” Aigbe said.

Aigbe, who credits faith for guiding her, said she often asks God for strength and wisdom.

“Even though I ask God for strength most times, I also ask Him for wisdom. I just love being a mum,” she stated.

Speaking on the loss of her mother, Mercy Aigbe recalled struggling to accept her passing while abroad.

“Up until we laid her to rest, I was in denial. I wasn’t in the country when she passed, so my husband called me and said, ‘Babe, there is something I have to tell you,’ and then he said, ‘Your mum has passed,’” she recalled.

The actress also admitted that the reality of her mother’s death still feels surreal.

Aigbe noted that she shared a close bond with her mother and had hoped she would recover from her illness.

“I was very close to my mum. Even though she had been ill for a while, I was hoping she would get better. It is a pain that never goes away; you just learn to live with it,” she added.

She said the loss took a toll on her professional life, prompting her to pause filmmaking temporarily.

“I didn’t produce a movie last December because of the loss of my mum. I knew I wasn’t mentally ready,” Aigbe added.

Mercy Aigbe opens up on struggles of single motherhood

Filmmaker and actress Mercy Aigbe has shared her personal experiences and challenges as a single mother during a recent episode of ‘Real Talk with Kike.’

The ‘Ada Omo Daddy’ star, known for her firm parenting approach, spoke about the emotional and physical demands of raising children alone, noting the difficulty of playing both maternal and paternal roles.

Reflecting on her journey, Mercy described it as far from easy and praised single mothers as “heroes” for their strength and resilience.

She admitted the topic remains deeply personal and emotional for her.

The actress also revealed that she regularly prays for her daughter, Michelle, and other children under her care, hoping they enjoy stable and lasting relationships, something she said she missed out on.

“For me, raising a child as a single mum… shout out to all the single mums out there, you guys are heroes, it’s not easy playing the role of two people. I am very sensitive when I talk about my single mother moment because it wasn’t an easy journey. That’s why anytime I pray for Michelle, I pray for other kids around me that I nurture, who are not my biological kids, but they are still my kids. I say to them, especially the girls, that life happens. A lot of us didn’t set out to be like this in terms of our love life, but life happens, and we hope for the best for our kids. I always tell my children that your first time will be your forever. Because I don’t wish it on anybody, it’s draining.

“I think part of what made me very tough on my kids is that I just didn’t want to fail as a mother because I had failed at this, I didn’t want to fail as a mother. I didn’t even want them to make mistakes, not realising it was part of their life’s journey, I was pushing hard and not giving them a chance to be who they want to be and make errors to gain correction from their errors. I didn’t want people to laugh at me and say a single mum raised them, they can’t do anything good. It’s so draining that financially, emotionally, morally, and mentally, you still have to show up,” she said.

According to her, the experiences prompted Mercy to send an apology text to her daughter, acknowledging the tough upbringing she provided, but also proud of the strong individual Michelle has become.

“I’ve been a single mother before I got married again. For years, I was a single mom to Michelle. Three days ago, I had to send an apology text to her for the harsh upbringing I gave her. I said, ‘I am so sorry, you might think the upbringing I gave you was so hard.’ Yes, it was harsh, I can’t lie. But I raised a vessel for God.

“One day, when I was calling her, she didn’t pick up my call. I had to call her friend, who later called me to call her back. When I called, I said, ‘Michelle, I have been calling, but you didn’t pick up my call.’ She responded, ‘Mommy, I’m traumatised. I remember you hit a bucket on my head one day. We need to start having these conversations, there are so many damaged adults around who are not properly healed from their childhood trauma. People are still stuck, and African parents, we’re too proud”, she said.

The film “My Mother Is a Witch” explores themes of family trauma, buried secrets, and the pursuit of forgiveness, which resonates with Mercy’s real-life experience.
