Messi and Martinez score twice in Argentina win

Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martinez both scored twice as Argentina beat Guatemala 4-1 in their final Copa America warm-up game in Maryland.

Argentina were given an early scare when an own goal after four minutes by Manchester United‘s Lisandro Martinez put Guatemala ahead – their first-ever goal against the reigning World Cup and Copa America champions.

But Messi equalised eight minutes later when keeper Nicholas Hagen cleared the ball straight into his path and the Argentina captain scored into an empty net.

Lautaro Martinez, who finished as Serie A’s top scorer last season, put Argentina ahead with a 39th-minute penalty and the Inter Milan star scored his second from a Messi pass after the break.

“We are aiming for the title, we are fighting for everything,” he told TyC Sports.

“We said it when the Copa America ended in 2021 and when the World Cup ended, we will try to prepare ourselves to start the Copa America in the best possible way and hopefully it will be all joy.”

Messi visit set to break New England’s 61K attendance record

The anticipated visit of Lionel Messi to Gillette Stadium next month is set to break the New England Revolution’s long-standing single-game attendance record with over 60,000 tickets already sold for the matchup with Inter Miami, New England has announced .

Less than 5,000 tickets remain for the April 27 MLS clash, the Revs said. The figure is well on track to surpass the club’s previous attendance record of 61,316 set for the 2002 MLS Cup, when New England hosted the LA Galaxy.

The previous regular-season attendance record for a Revolution home game dates back to 1997, when New England hosted the Tampa Bay Mutiny in a doubleheader with a World Cup qualifying match between Mexico and the United States.

Gillette Stadium, which also hosts six-time Super Bowl winners the New England Patriots, opened in 2002. The record for a Revolution regular-season match at the stadium was 42,947 in 2015.

Last season, the Patriots’ average home attendance in the NFL was 63,018.

Despite fans clamoring for tickets to see Messi in Foxborough, it remains to be seen whether the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will actually appear.

Messi, 36, has missed Inter Miami’s last two MLS matchups, as well as sitting out two recent Argentina friendlies in the U.S., because of a hamstring injury.

Miami manager Gerardo “Tata” Martino has said Messi is being evaluated week to week after being forced off in the club’s Concacaf Champions Cup second leg against Nashville SC on March 13. He has stated that the goal is to get Messi fit for Miami’s Champions Cup quarterfinal matchups with Mexico’s Monterrey on April 3 and April 10.

It would not be the first time that an MLS team has sold a huge quantity of tickets to fans expecting to watch the World Cup winner, only for him to be left off Miami’s team sheet.

Last season, with Messi looking set to miss out through injury, the Chicago Fire offered the more than 61,000 ticketed fans a $250 account credit “toward new memberships for the 2024 season — or a $50 account credit for anyone unable to use the new member credit — to all single-game ticket buyers” as an incentive to still show up to Soldier Field.

  • Messi wows Tokyo fans days after Hong Kong no-show

Messi wows Tokyo fans days after Hong Kong no-show

Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi played 30 minutes of a friendly match in Japan, days after his no-show in a similar match sparked fury in Hong Kong.

The Argentine superstar came in for the tail end of a goalless draw with Vissel Kobe in Tokyo yesterday , which his team lost 4-3 on penalties.

He started on the bench for the pre-season game against J-League side Kobe, worrying 28,614 spectators at the National Stadium, who chanted “Messi, Messi” in sporadic attempts to coax out the 36-year-old.

They began to sense their good fortune early in the second half, when the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and other substitutes began warming up.

The moment came around the hour mark, when the World Cup-winning captain replaced David Ruiz, sending the crowd into a moment of roaring frenzy that was followed by passionate cheers at his every touch.

In the 79th  minute, he dribbled solo into the Kobe box and fired a close-range shot that was saved by goalkeeper Shota Arai.

After the game, Miami coach Gerardo Martino said the decision to use Messi was made Tuesday afternoon.

“In the training yesterday afternoon, he said he was feeling good. We decided then that he would play for 30 minutes,” Martino said.

That was good enough to please many fans who braved winter cold to attend the night game.

“Absolutely extraordinary,” said Hiroto Hori, 45, of the star. “I witnessed the moment when a single player changed the direction of the game.”

    Others echoed the feeling.

“It (the game) was quiet at the beginning, but Messi changed it totally,” said Yuta Tanaka, 30.

Vissel had also showed promise, especially early in the match with former Japan international striker Yuya Osako hitting the post 15 minutes into the game.

A minute later, Osako struck the woodwork again. Messi did not take a kick in the shootout, which Kobe won.

The game stood in sharp contrast with Sunday when Messi and the team’s co-owner David Beckham were booed by tens of thousands of fans in Hong Kong after the star did not play in a friendly, citing injury.

During a press event in Tokyo on Tuesday, Messi said his leg injury was improving but refused to say whether he would play in the Tokyo game.

Tickets for the Japan leg of the US Major League Soccer (MLS) club’s globe-trotting pre-season tour cost between 10,000 yen ($68) and 200,000 yen ($1,346) with “special experience” packages priced even higher.

On Sunday in Hong Kong, a crowd of nearly 40,000 who paid for similarly expensive tickets were involved in angry scenes after Messi stayed rooted to the bench during his side’s 4-1 win against a Hong Kong select XI.

The Hong Kong government demanded an explanation from the match’s organisers, who had sought public funding for the event.

Miami have one more friendly, at home to Argentina’s Newell’s Old Boys next week, before the new MLS season starts on February 21.
