He also scored 32 goals in 55 league games for PSG, helping the side clinch the Ligue 1 title.

The 25-year-old Bonmati, on the other hand, won the Champions League and Spanish title with Barcelona last season plus the World Cup with Spain.

The night also belonged to another Argentine, the former Oxford United loanee Emiliano Martinez who helped his country to clinch the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 won the Yashin Trophy for the best keeper in the world.

But it was Norway’s international, Erling Haaland , that got the Gerd Muller Trophy for his prolific scoring form that saw him scored some 52 goals for Manchester City, who in the meantime was named the men’s club of the year after bagging the Treble last season.

Meanwhile, Victor Osimhen made history as the first Napoli player to make the top 10 of the Ballon d’Or rankings as the Super Eagles forward finished 8th overall.

The Nigeria international significantly contributed to Napoli’s first Serie A title in 33 years becoming the 2022-23 top-scorer in the league with 26 goals in 32 appearances. Napoli also reached the Champions League quarter-finals last season, the best result for the Partenopei in Europe’s elite competition.

Osimhen netted five times in six Champions League games last season and individual achievements, combined with Napoli’s results earned the 24-year-old a spot in the top 10 of this year’s Ballon d’Or.

His placement is reportedly the best result ever for a Napoli player according to journalist Giuseppe Pastore, given that the previous record belonged to Ruud Krol, who ended 15th in 1980.

The other players included in the top 10 are Julian Alvarez, Kevin de Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Lylian Mbappé, Leo Messi, Luka Modric, Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Vini Jr.

Messi tops list of most marketable athletes

Lionel Messi has topped a list of the world’s top 50 most marketable athletes for the second time, according to new data analysis.

The Inter Miami playmaker has had a riotous 2022-2023 after winning the World Cup in Qatar with Argentina in December.

The 36-year-old inked a lucrative move from Paris Saint-Germain to MLS over the summer and his first start in Florida has earned him even greater exposure to a global audience.

Messi is believed to be preparing to win a record-extending eighth Ballon d’Or at the end of October, which will burnish his star further.

As per Sports Pro Media, the former Barcelona icon’s on-pitch success has translated to his marketability, as he tops the list just three years after coming first in 2020.

Messi is one of just four footballers to round out the top ten, including USWNT star Megan Rapinoe, who retired in September.

Her team-mate Alex Morgan sits third in the rankings, two places higher than her position in last year’s list, and Kylian Mbappe, who moves up one place from 10th  to ninth.

Second to Messi is NBA superstar LeBron James, with seven-time NBA All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo in fourth.

US alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin is ranked sixth, followed by seven-time world champion Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton – the highest-ranked Briton – Simone Biles, and F1’s newly crowned world champion Max Verstappen rounding out the top 10.

Last year’s winner, Cristiano Ronaldo, was nowhere to be seen on the heels of his move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, slipping from the top spot to a suprising 27th  year-on-year.

British football receives its first nod in the form of Barcelona star and Lioness Lucy Bronze in 15th  – just two places ahead of her international captain Leah Williamson.

The first men’s team England star in the rankings is Harry Kane, sitting 22nd  in the rankings after his high-profile move to Bayern Munich during this summer’s transfer window.

Messi doubtful  against New York City FC

Lionel Messi trained  yesterday’s morning, but he will be a game-time decision once again for Inter Miami due to a nagging leg injury as they face a key home MLS matchup against New York City FC.

Assistant coach Javier Morales also said yesterday that veteran left back Jordi Alba will miss a second straight contest with a hamstring injury.

“Leo will train, day-to-day decision,” Morales said. “Jordi will have a longer recovery.”

Both former Barcelona teammates missed out on Wednesday evening’s 2-1 loss to the Houston Dynamo in the final of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as Miami failed to claim its second trophy of the season.

Miami conceded 18 shots on goal in the first half before making some adjustments at the break and coming close to forcing extra time with some late chances.

The South Florida club sits five points and five spots outside of the race to make the MLS Cup playoffs, with today’s opponents NYCFC occupying the ninth and final postseason berth in the Eastern Conference. A win on Saturday could jump Miami up from 14th to 11th and within two points of the playoff spots if it manages to claim three points and get some help elsewhere.

This  contest will be the first of three MLS games in eight days for Miami, a key stretch likely to play a heavy role in determining its postseason fate.

PSG raps Messi over World Cup claim

Lionel Messi has criticised Paris Saint-Germain once again, claiming the Parisian club did not recognise his triumph of winning the World Cup despite all his Argentina teammates being honoured by their respective clubs.

Speaking to ESPN in an interview, Messi revealed that PSG did not applaud his World Cup glory, which was executed after beating France in a dramatic penalty shootout.

“I was the only player of the 25 that didn’t get a [club] recognition,” the Inter Miami footballer said.

Messi later implied that he understood the reason since his team beat France in the final.

“It was understandable … because of us [Argentina], they [France] didn’t retain the World Cup,” the 36-year-old legend added.

In response to claims the club did nothing to celebrate Argentina’s World Cup success, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi refuted Messi’s statement.

“As everyone saw, because we even published a video, we celebrated Messi in training, and we also celebrated him in private,” he told RMC Sport.

“But with respect, we are a French club. It was of course sensitive to celebrate at the stadium. We must respect the country he defeated, his teammates on the France team, and our supporters too,” Al-Khelaifi added.

The video from January that Al-Khelaifi addresses shows Messi at a ceremony put on by PSG to celebrate his victory at the World Cup. The footballer is seen walking through a tunnel surrounded by his teammates and club staff members before being given a trophy with his name.

Messi scored twice in the final and later converted a penalty in the shootout to secure Argentina’s 4-2 win on penalties against France at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Messi snubbed a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia to join Inter Miami until December 2025 in June, leaving behind PSG.

Speaking on his time with the club, Messi said he did not regret his time despite facing endless booing from fans.

“It happened like that. It was not what I expected, but I always say things happen for a reason,” he said.

“Even if I wasn’t well there, it happened that I was world champion while I was there,” Messi added.

Reaching his late 30s, Messi has claimed that he is comfortable with his time in the United States and doesn’t expect to retire anytime soon.

“I love what I do, I enjoy playing, and now it’s a different way,” he said. “That is why I made the decision to come to Miami and not continue my career elsewhere, you experience it a different way.”

Although he confirmed he will play in the 2024 Copa America, Messi said he is unsure if he will represent his country at the 2026 World Cup.

“I do think about the Copa America [in 2024],” the superstar voiced.

“After the Copa America, we will see, it depends on how I feel. I will see how I feel day by day, there are three years to go. I don’t notice if my level of play is declining, I stop and play as always. But there is a reality: I’m older, I have a thousand games behind me, and time passes for everyone.”

Lionel Messi’s second-half goal gave Argentina a 1-0 home win over Ecuador on Thursday to get their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign off on the right foot in front of 83,000 fans at the nearly full Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.

World champions Argentina were dominant in possession, but frustrated in attack as they struggled to make the breakthrough.

Captain Messi, however, continued the fine form he is showing with club side Inter Miami of MLS by scoring from a free kick in the 77th minute.

“We played against a great team, with good players and physically strong,” Messi told reporters. “Everyone always wants to beat Argentina and even more so now that we are the world champions. We can’t relax, we have to improve on what we’ve been doing.

“The objective is to qualify for the World Cup again. We really enjoyed what we did but we have to look ahead.”

The result continues an impressive run for Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina side and his talisman Messi, who has now scored in his past eight matches played for Argentina and is tied with Luis Suarez on 29 for the most all time in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.

My rivalry with Messi is over after Ballon d’Or snub, says Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo said that his rivalry with Lionel Messi is ‘gone’ after the Portuguese superstar was snubbed for the 2023 Ballon d’Or award.

A total of 30 stars have been nominated for the prestigious trophy this year, which is handed annually to the best player in world football.

Messi and Ronaldo have been battling it out for the Ballon d’Or for well over a decade with the Argentine being awarded the trophy a record seven times.

Ronaldo has five Ballon d’Or trophies but the 38-year-old, who now plays for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, was not named among the 30 nominees for 2023.

Inter Miami star Messi made the list following his heroics in Qatar last year after the 36-year-old played a key role in Argentina winning the World Cup.

But Ronaldo claims his long rivalry with Messi – which peaked when the duo were playing for Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively – has officially come to an end.

“I don’t see things like that, the rivalry is gone,” Ronaldo said. “It was good, the spectators liked it.

“Those who like Cristiano Ronaldo don’t have to hate Messi and vice versa. We’ve done well, we have changed the history of football.

“We are respected all over the world, that’s the most important thing. He’s followed his path and I have followed mine, regardless of playing outside of Europe.

“From what I’ve seen, he’s been doing well and so have I. The legacy lives on, but I don’t see the rivalry like that. We shared the stage many times, it was 15 years. I’m not saying we’re friends, I’ve never had dinner with him, but we’re professional colleagues and we respect each other.”

Messi, Haaland, Bonmati lead Ballon d’Or nominees

Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland are among the leading contenders to win this year’s men’s Ballon d’Or, while Spain World Cup star Aitana Bonmati leads the nominees announced yesterday for the women’s prize.

Messi, who recently left Paris Saint-Germain for Inter Miami, is in with a chance of succeeding Karim Benzema and winning the Ballon d’Or for the eighth time in his remarkable career after leading Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar last year.

Haaland may be his main rival for the prize after scoring 52 goals in 53 games to help Manchester City win the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup last season.

The Norway striker last week won the UEFA player of the year award for last season.

PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and Haaland’s City teammate Kevin De Bruyne also feature among the 30 nominees for the prize, the winner of which will be announced at a ceremony in Paris on October 30.

Benzema, who ended a 14-year spell at Real Madrid in June when he moved to Saudi club Al-Ittihad, is also nominated.

Bonmati, winner of the UEFA women’s player award, appears the favourite to claim the Ballon d’Or after being the outstanding player as Spain lifted the World Cup in Sydney last month.

She also starred as Barcelona won the Champions League and will hope to succeed her club and international colleague Alexia Putellas, winner in the last two years.

Putellas is not nominated this time having hardly played for Barcelona last season after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate knee ligament in July 2022 which kept her out for nine months.

Bonmati is one of four members of Spain’s World Cup-winning team nominated, along with Olga Carmona, Salma Paralluelo and Alba Redondo.

Their compatriots Patricia Guijarro and Mapi Leon are also named.

Both of Barcelona, they did not go to the World Cup after being among a group of 15 players who said last year they no longer wanted to play for Spain in a protest against the Spanish federation and coach Jorge Vilda.

Others included in the 30 nominees are Chelsea and Australia striker Sam Kerr and England goalkeeper Mary Earps.
