Yassine Chueko: Meet Messi’s ubiquitous bodyguard

Lionel Messi’s fairy-tale start to life in MLS continued with Inter Miami’s 5-4 penalty shootout win in the semi-finals of the US Open Cup against Cincinnati on Wednesday night.

The 36-year-old assisted both goals in regular time as Inter Miami came back from 2-0 down before prevailing from the spot after the sides were locked at 3-3 after extra time.

In doing so, the recently-formed side booked their place in the final – the second since Messi’s arrival last month – of the country’s oldest and most prestigious knockout football competition, which dates back to 1913.

But in spite of their on-field success, it was the Argentina superstar’s bodyguard that grabbed the headlines.

Owing to his massive celebrity, Messi has been flanked by personal protection that even remains in close proximity when he is on the field of play.

On Wednesday, the bodyguard – who, according to La Nacion, is former US soldier Yassine Chueko – hurried down the sideline and even continued past the corner flag when Messi and his Miami team-mates celebrated Leonardo Campana’s equaliser deep into stoppage time.

It’s the latest in a series of sightings of Messi’s bodyguard, reportedly specifically brought on board by Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham.

Chueko is a former Navy Seal with combat experience in both Iraq and Afghanistan with expertise in martial arts, taekwondo, boxing and participated in several MMA fights.

The decision by Beckham to select the highly-skilled Chueko comes amid the rising number of pitch invaders in recent years.

And, considering the fanfare that has been generated by Messi’s unbelievable start to life in the US, the choice seems all the wiser.

Whether it be walking from the team bus to the changing rooms, or strolling along the touchline to follow Messi’s movements during a game, he is always within close distance of the Argentine.

One video that has drawn a lot of attention came ahead of the club’s League Cup semi-final win against Philadelphia, where Chueko can be seen waiting by the entrance of the club’s team bus, allowing several players to walk by before Messi appears, and he swiftly bursts into action.

Inter Miami’s commitment to Messi’s safety was outlined by co-owner Jorge Mas, who spearheaded the charm offensive to get him to the States, in June.

“Security will obviously be enhanced,” he told the Miami Herald. “Players will be bussed in, going through a tunnel. All of those security protocols are already prepared both for here and away. And it’s not only for our games.

“It’s going to be an everyday occurrence and something we witnessed and I thought handled very well when (Messi) was here with Argentina before the World Cup.

“As you may recall, Argentina trained in Miami before they flew over to Doha. We had an opportunity to see some of the Messi mania at our doors on an everyday basis during practice. So, we’re very prepared. We’ve been getting ready for this.”

  • Barcelona 3-0 Liverpool: Messi, Suarez do the damage

Luis Suarez struck against his former club, while Lionel Messi scored twice – including a stunning free-kick – as Barcelona beat Liverpool 3-0 at Camp Nou to seize the advantage in their Champions League semi-final tie.

Suarez struck in the 26th minute as he timed his run perfectly, darting between Liverpool defenders Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk to stab a Jordi Alba cross into the net.

While Liverpool frequently threatened in a breathless encounter, Barcelona doubled their advantage with 15 minutes to play when Suarez hit the crossbar, only for the ball to rebound to Messi six yards out, who chested the ball down and tapped it home.

Messi then added a simply superb third on 82 minutes, curling a trademark left-footed free-kick into the top corner.

Mohamed Salah hit the post late on for Liverpool, but it was Messi and Suarez who stole the show to hand their team a huge advantage heading to Anfield for the second leg next week.

  • Messi must be more involved – Valverde

Barcelona need to ensure Lionel Messi is more involved in Saturday’s La Liga ‘Clasico’ at Real Madrid than he was in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey semi-final second-leg victory over their arch-rivals, coach Ernesto Valverde said.

Messi, all-time top scorer in the ‘Clasico’, was unusually quiet in his side’s 3-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu, a game in which Real had many more chances but Barca were more clinical.

The Argentine has had fitness issues over the last month but bagged a hat-trick and notched an assist in the 4-2 win at Sevilla last weekend.

“I think he is in good shape, very good shape. You always expect a lot of your players, Messi included,” Valverde told a news conference on Friday.

“He always performs, even though in some games he performs less than in others. We have to play well in order for him to perform.”

The coach gave an honest assessment of his side’s overall display in the Cup game, in which Barca had only four shots to Real’s 14.

“It’s true that the other day there were spells when we did not play well, they kept arriving in our area and looked dangerous and we only created two or three chances.

  • Suarez, Messi rekindling magic as favoured victims Celta await

It took Barcelona forwards Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez time to adjust to the loss of their third musketeer Neymar.

But they have since forged on as a fearsome double act more prolific than the combined efforts of most other teams in La Liga.

With Messi the top-scorer in Spain’s top flight with 14 goals and Suarez joint-second on 11, only Sevilla, Levante and next opponents Celta Vigo have managed to score more than the deadly South American duo.

Messi has come into his own in his last two outings, putting on an exhibition of free kick taking against Espanyol and ripping Levante apart in last week’s 5-0 thrashing, with a hat-trick and two assists.

Suarez, who endured a long goal drought last season since after the departure of Neymar, has rediscovered the sharpness which led to him scoring a remarkable 40 league goals in the 2015/16 campaign.

He broke the deadlock against Levante by volleying in a Messi cross and also struck against Espanyol, two of seven goals he has scored in his last six league outings, including a hat-trick against Real Madrid.

“Luis and Leo are the best strike partnership in the world right now,” said Barca’s Gerard Pique last week.

“Luis has goals in his veins and we’ve already said everything about Leo. We have a lot of firepower up front,” said Pique.

The strikers’ combined 25 goals, more than half of Barca’s haul this season, have helped lift the Catalans three points clear of Sevilla and Atletico Madrid at the top of the standings and five ahead of Real Madrid.

Ernesto Valverde’s side will expect to preserve that gap after Saturday’s game with Celta, typically tough opponents at their Balaidos stadium but, who usually bring the best out of Barca, and particularly Messi and Suarez, at the Nou Camp.

It was against Celta when Messi audaciously passed to Suarez to score from a penalty in a 6-1 thumping in 2016 in which the Uruguayan scored a hat-trick, while Messi struck twice in 5-0 thrashings of the Galicians in the league and Copa del Rey in the last two years.

Even when Celta managed to hold Barca to a 2-2 draw at the Nou Camp last December, Messi and Suarez both scored.

Celta sacked manager Antonio Mohamed earlier this season and have shown signs of improvement under Miguel Cardoso, rising to ninth in the standings.

Second-placed Sevilla visit Leganes on Sunday, while Atletico Madrid, rocked by reports that Bayern Munich have paid the release clause of their World Cup winning defender Lucas Hernandez, host Espanyol on Saturday.

Real Madrid could lose ground as they are playing Al Ain in the final of FIFA’s Club World Cup on Saturday.

  • Ronaldo fantastic, Messi better — Etebo

Super Eagles’ midfielder, Oghenekaro Etebo has weighed in on one of the biggest football arguments of the decade which is giving his opinion on whom he thinks is the better player between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speaking with footballlive.ng the Stoke City midfielder who was on loan to Spanish side Las Palmas last season said. “They are both top players but I must tell you the truth, you can imagine that in 10 years it’s been both of them staying consistent for that long. I don’t think it has ever happened before in football. These two rivals are so good and untouchable but I’m going to go for Lionel Messi as the better of the two.”

Etebo, last season in the La Liga had a standout performance against Lionel Messi’s Barcelona matching the Argentine toe-to-toe in the fixture and also stepping up to the five-time World Footballer of the Year at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Brazil in the colours of Nigeria where the Super Eagles fell 2-1 to the south American nation.

Although Etebo has never played against Cristiano Ronaldo he still has some very kind words for the former Real Madrid legend. “Ronaldo is a very hardworking player that shows you that with dedication to what you do you can reach the top of your craft. I honestly admire him as well but Messi is just magical.”

Etebo moved away from the La Liga to Stoke City in England after the Spanish team relegated from the top flight.

  • World Cup: I don’t know these Eagles – Messi

Both teams clash on June 26 in the last game of group D at the 2018 FIFA World Cup at Saint Petersburg, a result that Messi says won’t be as important as the Iceland and Croatia encounters which the South Americans are aiming to win before facing their Africa opponents.

“It will be important to start strongly. Iceland did well in their last tournament so the first match
will not be comfortable. But these are the ones to win if you don’t want the next matches to be even
    more complicated.”

We don’t know so much about Nigeria but the African teams are normally compact, tough and strong. So it will be no walkover,” Messi told UK tabliod, Express.co.uk.

“We know it won’t be easy but I’m certain that Argentina has a squad capable of being a champion in
Russia. If the players all believe the same then we can be contenders.”

Argentina and Nigeria will be meeting for the fifth time at the World Cup with Nigeria yet to win the
    La Albiceleste in previous outings.

  • Messi announces desire to play for Newell’s Old Boys

Lionel Messi will like to play for Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina before he retires, having only played for FC Barcelona in his career so far.

The 30-year-old five-time Ballon d’Or winner will one day like to feature for the team he trained with as a boy in his native Rosario before moving to Barcelona at 13.

At FC Barcelona, he has a contract until 2021.

“I’m increasingly sure that in Europe, FC Barcelona will be my only club,” Messi told Argentine television station El Trece.

“I always said I wanted to play in Argentine football one day, I don’t know if it will happen but I have it in my mind.
“It will be at Newell’s, nowhere else. I would like to do that for at least six months, but you never know what will happen.”

Messi is preparing for the World Cup in Russia with Argentina and says winning it with his country will be a unique experience.

However, he does not wish he should have chosen to play for Spain, who lifted the trophy in 2010.

“The other day I was talking to a friend and he told me ‘if you had chosen Spain, you’d be a World Cup winner already’, but it wouldn’t have been the same,” added Messi.

“Obviously in no moment did I think about doing that. To win it with Argentina will be something unique.”

  • Messi unperturbed about Nigeria’s threat

Lionel Messi is not scared of being in the same group D with Nigeria’s Super Eagles just as the Argentine star looks forward to making it to the semi-final stage of Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Instead of concerning himself with Nigeria in the group match, the Barca maestro is focusing on threats from Brazil, Germany, Spain and France.

“A good World Cup would be to in the last four, to be one of the best four. The least Argentina deserves is to be there because of its history,” Messi explained to TyC Sports.

Messi’s desire to reach the semi-finals is a target echoed by Argentina Football Association (AFA) President Claudio Tapia but if Argentina can’t go one better than in 2014 who might be the other contenders?

“Brazil arrives in great shape collectively as they gave good players individually but as a group, they work very well. They defend well, they have strong players and then they counter with very fast players like Neymar or Coutinho.

“Spain, for the players that they have and their way of playing, more attractive than Brazil; Germany, because they are always there and France, because they too have very good players, though they have many young players.  It took a great deal for us just to reach this moment, but I think we have to be there again.”

“We don’t have an obligation to anyone. We want to win more than anyone after going to three finals and not winning any of them. This is a weight that we carry ourselves and want to overcome, a desire of all of us who have been in the national team this last decade. If we do not win the World Cup, I will continue in the national team,” Messi stated.

“After saying that [retiring after the Copa América] I thought it was not the right thing to do, it would be giving the wrong message to the youths and all the people who fight for their dreams. Keep trying and keep fighting for what you want.”

“I’m not interested in being the best of all-time. Every time I start a year I try to improve personally, win everything, leave everything on the pitch every time I go out, give it all for my teammates and for me. It does not change anything to be the best of all-time.”

  • So, Messi can be caged

IT was a nightmare for FC Barcelona’s fans in Italy after the most exciting side to watch squandered on Tuesday a three-goal margin secured in the first leg against Roma FC in one of the quarter-finals fixtures in the UEFA Champions League. For most Barca fans, their team is complete, with Lionel Messi playing. And the Argentine never fails for both club and country. Indeed, Messi has scored goals that have left spectators amazed.

Messi ranks close to Cristiano Ronaldo in no particular order because both make the game exciting. Messi passes the ball in the vintage Barcelona tiki taka playing style  until when he pops up to score a goal. But Ronaldo emerges from  Real Madrid’s superb decoy moves, which he may not initiate, to score goals which leave defenders dumbfounded. Both players are reliable. They carry their teams when things go wrong and have incredible passion for victory, which rubs off on the others.

When Messi and Ronaldo are off form, Barca and Real Madrid suffer. You won’t blame them because their mates know their worth and play to their potential. Who doesn’t want to win matches and trophies? Real Madrid are not as potent as they were last season because Ronaldo hasn’t recovered from his injury which arose from games that he played for Madrid and Portugal. He is getting better and Real Madrid are better for it.

But Juventus FC of Italy gave Ronaldo something to ponder over- he was effectively checked. But he rose to the occasion by stepping forward to convert what many thought was a controversial penalty kick. That goal earned Real Madrid the semi-final ticket on goals aggregate, having won the first leg in Turin 3-0, only to be beaten by Juventus 3-1. Only Ronaldo could have converted such a penalty kick, given the rift surrounding  English referee Oliver Michael’s decision, with most pundits asking if he could have made  such a decision, if it happened in the Madrid side’s 18-metre box. Sheer hypothesis. Michael’s decision was correct. I digress.

And so, on Tuesday night when the Italians had Messi inside the defensive web, Barca was rudderless, leading to their exit from the most prestigious European club competition. Italians are reputable man-markers. They sat back to fashion out how to mark Messi. They compelled Messi to abandon his ball distribution to look for the vital away goal from the centre forward position. The Italians kept the ball away from Messi’s playing area, making Barca vulnerable to the three goals which the team conceded. Had Barca registered Phillip Coutinho for the UEFA Champions League, Roma wouldn’t have succeeded in eliminating the Catalan side.

Barca needed a player used to taking charge of a team playing badly under pressure. Coutinho would have freed Messi from the trap by scoring the vital away goal from either a long range shot or one of the free kicks. Barca missed cup-tied Coutinho.

What the Italians showed the world, especially Super Eagles coaches and players, was that marking Messi starts with ensuring that the team doesn’t play in his favourite areas. They didn’t give any particular player to mark him. They chose to ensure that m he doesn’t go on his characteristic dribbling runs to wreak havoc.  Messi needs space but the Italians choked the place, forcing him to search for the ball, which isn’t his strongest asset.

Interestingly, Roma had to change their game plan to stop Messi and his rampaging teammates just like the Super Eagles will need to do against the Argentines – if the need arises at the World Cup.

Roma manager Eusebio Di Francesco’s eureka moment came at five o’clock on Sunday morning. Unable to sleep after Roma’s home defeat by Fiorentina, Di Francesco found himself jotting down various ways in which he could stop Barcelona.

‘I couldn’t sleep, plus I’m a bit insane, so I got out of bed and drew up possible schemes for the Barcelona game, different looks that would put them under pressure in different ways. And this came to me. Had it not worked, you would have killed me,’’ he said after Tuesday’s game.

Most impressive about Di Francesco is the way he coached a completely new game plan to his players in just two training sessions.

‘’We had a long way to go after the first leg but all credit to the coach because he invented this formation two days ago, he drilled it into our heads and it worked wonders,” said midfielder De Rossi. I have never seen Barcelona struggle so much. We pressed them throughout the game from the first minute. It was the first time we played with three at the back and we did great.’’

Nigeria are the Argentines’ last World Cup opponents, but they would be driven by vengeance to beat the Super Eagles, even if they beat Iceland and Croatia, which could spell doom for Nigeria at the Mundial. We need to learn how to handle special players. This starts with watching how they play to cage them like the Italians did to Messi.

However, Nwankwo Kanu’s profound submissions to Eagles stars ahead of the Mundial in Russia, if heeded, could be the fillip the Nigerians need to cause the biggest upset in the history of the competition.

“This team is very good. No need comparing them with any other set of Eagles’ players because those are different era. Right now we have to look at the present team and see what they are capable of doing. For me, it is a very good side. There are no stars in the team but they will excel as a unit,” Kanu added.

”This is the first time I am seeing a team and not stars coming together to play for the Eagles. Those on the reserve bench are as good as the ones on the pitch. They are also very young and energetic, while the few experienced players will provide the needed balance. What is important is to pick one or two lessons from the friendly games.

“We should not get carried away by the results but use the games to build a strong side. A lot of countries are also watching us; so whatever we do in those games is what they will use against us. And I am sure the experienced coach will add value to the team.

“My advice is that the players should know that they are going to Russia to represent the biggest country in Africa, the giant of Africa, Nigeria. Putting on the green and white jersey should mean more to them than personal glory. They should know that playing for the country is bigger than playing for their respective clubs. So they should go to Russia and make Nigeria proud.”

Good talk Kanu at a sporting event in Lagos where Peter Rufai admonished the players thus: “I think the team is doing what it ought to do by playing friendly matches. The team has been preparing well and we will all agree that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has done well by organising friendly games for the team in different parts of the world that will enable the Eagles grab different experiences. The coach and his crew will also be able to design a tactical formation that will benefit the team.”

    Eight goals against Falcons

The deafening noise from football enthusiasts since France beat Super Falcons 8-0 wasn’t unexpected. As African champions, Falcons ought to have buckled their shoes to give the French a good fight. It wasn’t going to happen because the Falcons have been out of the game for over two years. What happened against France is the price for inactivity. I hope our soccer chieftains have learned the desired lessons.

Falcons players have cried since they became Africa champions two years ago that they needed to be kept busy with local competitions and quality friendly matches, such as the game against France. But NFF chose to first get the domestic league back by inaugurating a league board, which has Aisha Falode as its boss. Falode’s committee has done the needful by getting sponsors for the domestic game and bringing fresh ideas that led to the commencement of the domestic league last week.

The eight goals drubbing by France should inform the need to reengineer the squad, which should start with getting new players to replace those who can’t compete at the highest level. We need new players who can only be discovered from a good monitoring system with set rules of what to look for in the new-look squad.

Interestingly, the new coach saw it all. He must have taken note of the weak areas. I hope NFF can direct the new manager to watch the domestic league. Signs of what happened in France stare us in the face. We have overcome so many because we are talented and more experienced. If we don’t take radical steps to improve, we would soon lose our champions tag for the also-ran teams.

NFF chiefs should ensure that players who are retiring or cannot fit into the manager’s plans should be on coaching courses so that they can be drafted to the domestic league clubs. We must stop this idea of using and dumping our heroines, in this case after winning laurels for the country. Good experience for the Falcons. They now know how others felt when Falcons whacked them by the same score and even more.

Watch out France, the Falcons will be back to fight you till death.

  • RUSSIA 2018 WORLD CUP No special plan to stop Messi-Rohr

COACH Gernot Rohr has said that he will not put a man on Argentina superstar, Lionel Messi when both countries clash at the World Cup in Russia. Nigeria have lost on all four occasions they faced the twotime world champions at the World Cup with skipper Messi grabbing a brace when Argentina beat the Eagles 3-2 at the last World Cup in Brazil. Rohr has now said the Eagles will defend as a team so as to reduce the threat posed by one of the best players in the world. “At this stage, there is no special plan (to stop Messi). We don’t even know whether he will play. Of course, we all know him and we know of his quality,” the Nigeria coach said in an interview published by Soccer Laduma Wednesday.

“But we also played against some really good players in our qualification and we were able to deal with them. We had Riyad Mahrez in Algerian team, we played against Sadio Mane and Senegal in a friendly. We know how to organise our defence against top quality players. “What I can tell you now is that there will be no man-marking of Messi. We did this in the old days, even me, but it’s not used too often these days. We will deal with Messi or any big player as a unit. But often you won’t be able to keep top players quiet over the whole 90 minutes.”

Messi missed his team’s 4-2 loss to Nigeria in a friendly in November in Russia and Rohr said on that the result may now be a big disadvantage for the Eagles as the South Americans will take them a lot more seriously at the World Cup. He said: “We are very cautious and have to analyse this great result in context. Argentina had played another friendly against Russia before facing us. Perhaps, they were a bit tired – they also left Russia soon after our game. “I think no one should overrate the result. I definitely won’t overrate it. It was definitely not to our advantage because Argentina will take us more seriously now. “
