  • Mikel, Etebor shine as Middleborough hit Stoke 1-0

Super Eagles duo John Obi Mikel and Oghenekaro Etebo enjoyed full 90 minutes action as Middlesbrough hosted Stock City in the English Championship Friday. Although it was Boro what had the last laugh following their lone goal victory, Etebor and his teammates gave a good account of themselves and even dominated proceedings but the goals refused to come.

Boro had shot into the lead as early as the 2nd minute of the match thanks to Congo DR import Britt Assombalonga. Boro who had 42% possession in the match, managed to checkmate their visiting opponents who had greater possession control from converting any of the chances created.

The victory is considered a big achievement in the Boro’s camp as it is their first in the last four championship games.

The coach Tony Pulis tutored side prior to Friday’s victory had lost three games to Norwich City, Bristol City and Swansea City respectively. Stoke City on their part recorded their last victory against Blackburn Rovers weeks before a string of draw games against shepherd Wednesday and Reading.

Friday’s defeat thus marks the first defeat in four matches.  Middlesbrough are 6th on the log with 67 points in 43 matches. Stoke will however continue in their struggle to better their standing on the log as they are 16th on the log with 52 points in 43 matches. Boro will next face Nottingham Forest away on Monday while Stoke host Norwich City same day.

”Great team, great players, great lads too, so it is always nice, it is always positive. I am really honored to have captained the team in the last two games.

  • Mikel in full Acton as Boro records 6th defeat in a row

These certainly are not the best of times for super Eagles captain and his Middlesbrough teammates as they recorded their 6th defeat in a row on Saturday.

The Nigerian international and former Chelsea midfielder was in action for the entire duration of the match providing impressive passes that were however blocked by homers Swansea who began by converting a penalty goal in the 34th minute thanks to Matt Grimes.

The score line stood at 2-0 at half time after Wayne Routledge increased the tally for Swansea in the 38th minute. Boro came out more determined in the second half with intent to remedy the situation but that did not immediately materialise rather it was Connor Roberts who grabbed the 3rd goal for Swansea after enjoying an assist from Bersant Celina who  had also provided an assist for second goal hero Routledge.

What turned out to be the consolation goal for Boro came in the 81st minute through George Saville.  Despite the series of loses Mikel has told his teammates not to give up but fight on. Prior to Saturday’s defeat, Boro had lost Bristol City, Norwich City, Aston Villa Preston North End and Brentford, conceding 9 goals and scoring two. • Mikel plays for 90 minutes in Middlesbrough s 1-1 draw

Super Eagles Captain John Obi Mikel was in action for full 90 minutes Saturday as Middlesbrough were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Leeds united at the Riverside Stadium.

The former Chelsea star was not listed in Middlesbrough’s second FA Cup return leg that ended 2-0 in favour of Newport County.

Visiting Leeds could be said to have come prepared to rattle Boro at home, commanding 61% possession as against 39% maintained by Mikel and his teammates.

Lewis Wing shot the homers into the lead 47th minute and Boro looked as though they were going to run away with a win with three points up for grabs, but that was not to be as Leeds Kalvin Philips broke the hearts of Boro  in the 11th minute of added time.

A massive 11 minutes was added after regulation time of 90 minutes and this could be explained with centre referee Darren England having to reach out for his whistle 20 times as Boro committed 11 fouls while Leeds committed 9 fouls in the course of the game with two yellow cards going to Boro and one for Leeds.

In addition Leeds youngster Jack Clarke was treated by paramedics on the bench for feeling unwell and later taken to hospital as the game is delayed for seven minutes .

Boro currently in the 4th position on the log with 51 points in 30 matches will be hoping to earn maximum three points or at worst a point when they face Sheffield United away on Wednesday.

Mikel had previously attracted   interest from European sides Roma and Wolfsburg but was set on returning to England to be closer to his family.

The Nigeria international, who will be hoping to represent his country during this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, was also linked with a move to Crystal Palace.

    Amun, Adepoju salute Yakubu Aiyegbeni

Fanny Amun, a former Super Eagles Assistant Coach at the France `98 World Cup, has described Yakubu Aiyegbeni as a player who had paid his dues in domestic and international football.

Amun spoke against the backdrop of Aiyegbeni’s retirement on Wednesday in Lagos after he turned 35.

Shortly after he announced his retirement, the former Super Eagles striker thanked all who had played one role or the other in his career.

“I would like to officially announce my retirement from professional football today,’’ Yakubu told Sky Sports on Wednesday in London.

“Thank you for the memories,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Aiyegbeni played for Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers and Everton FC all of England and made 250 Premier League appearances as well as scored 96 goals in a career spanning 20 years.

He started his professional career in the Nigerian league in 1997/1998 season when he plied his trade with Julius Berger FC of Lagos (now defunct).

He also played in Israel with Macabi Haifa FC before moving to Europe in 2003.

The “Yak’’ as he was fondly called is the 3rd best all-time scorer of the senior national team 21 goals.

He featured three times for fourth-tier side Coventry City this year before being released by the club.

The former assistant coach of the Super Eagles added that Aiyegbeni would be remembered for his selfless performance for the national teams.

“Aiyegbeni is still young but the fact remains that he has paid his dues as a club player and a national team player who has represented Nigeria at the highest level of football.

“He was most times noted for his response to national duties and did so well.

“I think he must have prepared well for life after retirement because he is still young and not be in the ranks of those claiming that Nigeria has not done anything for them.

“Nigeria has done everything for them at least they have the opportunity of wearing the national jersey which others did not have, they need to prepare well for the future and not wait on Nigeria,’’ he said.

Similarly, a former international Mutiu Adepoju, said that Aiyegbeni would be remembered for his contributions to the national teams during his playing days, adding that he was dedicated.

“Most of us will remember him for his contributions to the national team as a striker who scored many goals.

“He is one of the few dedicated players around ready for call-up and wearing the national colours.

“He has done well, he is a good player and very well respected; I wish him well,’’ he said.

  • Spurs dent Arsenal champions league hope, City draw against Boro

Spurs dent Arsenal champions league hope, City draw against Boro

Totenham hotspur add to Arsene Wenger misery with a comfortable 2-0 derby win against Arsenal at white hart lane.

Goals from Dele Alli and a penalty converted by Harry kane sees off their north London rival, making it diffilcut for Arsenal to qualify for next season champions league

  • Sanchez, Ozil rescue lacklustre Arsenal at Middlesbrough

Sanchez, Ozil rescue lacklustre Arsenal at Middlesbrough

Two goals from Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil were enough to rescue a win for Arsenal away at Middlesbrough, keeping alive the Gunners’ hopes of finishing in the top four

Arsenal started the game 10 points adrift of fourth place, and Middlesbrough were six points away from climbing out of the relegation zone.

Arsene Wenger started the match with three at the back, giving Rob Holding a rare start. While neither side impressed in the first half, Sanchez curled in a fine free-kick past a static Brad Guzan.

In the second half, Alvaro Negredo equalised for the home side, and with 20 minutes of normal time left, Ozil won it with a low shot from close range.

With the victory, Arsenal move into sixth on goals scored, while ‘Boro now look doomed in their attempts to stay up. Arsenal’s post match celebrations betrayed their relief after a difficult period.

    TALKING POINT

Has Arsene Wenger tinkered too late? A drop to three at the back is hardly rocket science, but putting three central defenders helps to shore up a weak central defence, and gives more bodies in the middle of the park too. It certainly helped the side to play their three best attacking players, and gave Oxlade-Chamberlain and Nacho Monreal the chance to assist in attack and defence. It wasn’t a great performance, but it was far better than it has been.

    MAN OF THE MATCH

Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough): While he ended up on the losing side, Downing was ‘Boro’s most threatening player, and the most dangerous player on the pitch. His deft cross into the box for Negredo created a goal, and had he seen more of the ball he could have given Arsenal’s new-look defence a tougher time.
