Injured Pogba to miss Middlesbrough clash

Paul Pogba will miss Manchester United’s Premier League match against Middlesbrough on Sunday and withdraw from the France squad due to the hamstring injury he suffered against Rostov.

United manager Jose Mourinho confirmed Pogba will be sidelined after having to be replaced two minutes into the second half of Thursday’s Europa League victory over the Russians.

Mourinho’s men won 1-0 on the night at Old Trafford to seal a 2-1 aggregate triumph in the last-16 tie, but saw the France midfielder limp off to be replaced by Marouane Fellaini.

The 24-year-old gestured to his leg and headed straight down the tunnel after sustaining the problem when pressing a Rostov player, applauding the home fans on his way off.

“Yes, hamstring,” Mourinho said of Pogba’s injury at his post-match media conference.

“I don’t know for sure how long, but no Middlesbrough and no national team.”

Pogba had been named in France’s squad to face Luxembourg in World Cup qualifying and Spain in a high-profile friendly for next week’s international break.

A goal from Juan Mata proved to be enough for United in a tense second leg, with Mourinho impressed by his side’s battling qualities.

“Our plan was to kill the game when we had energy for that,” he said.

“We tried to kill it in the first half, we hit the post, the keeper saved, we missed chances. Then they were trying, but my players fought hard.

“Rostov are a very difficult team to play against because they defend with a block of 10 players. It was difficult for everyone. Atletico Madrid, Bayern, Anderlecht, Ajax, Sparta Prague, Man United – everyone found it difficult to play against them.

“They are very organised, big discipline, and they can be dangerous on the counter-attack.”

Middlesbrough sign striker Gestede for £6m

Rudy Gestede has completed his move to Middlesbrough from Aston Villa.
The Benin international has signed a contract until 2020 on Teesside, after completing a medical, with the fee officially undisclosed but thought to be in the region of £6million.
Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka has acted quickly in a bid to cure his side’s problems in front of goal, with a deal done to beat off competition from both Crystal Palace and West Brom.
Gestede is expected to be available for Boro’s FA Cup third-round clash with Sheffield Wednesday next weekend and the Africa Cup of Nations is not an issue as his country didn’t qualify.
The 28-year-old becomes Karanka’s first signing of the January transfer window and could be a catalyst for the departures of both Jordan Rhodes and David Nugent.
Gestede, who is renowned for his aerial strength, scored 32 league goals in 50 starts for Blackburn but his move to Villa in 2015 hasn’t fully worked out.
The club were relegated from the Premier League last season and Gestede has spent more time on the bench than in the starting XI, making just eight starts.
A short message on Villa’s club website read: ‘Thanks for your contributions, Rudy – and good luck for the future.’ Gestede will wear the No 29 shirt at Boro.

Omeruo’s ‘Boro fail to break Leeds

    By Uchenna Ajah

Super Eagles defender, Kennedy Omeruo was in the thick of the action for Middlesbrough in their Championship barren draw with Leeds at their Riverside Stadium. A performance that saw ‘Boro’s goalless run stretch to six games and more than 10 hours after Leeds earned a point with the result at the Riverside.

In a game of few clear-cut chances, Omeruo and his ‘Boro pals had the upper hand, but couldn’t find a way past the visitors’ debutant keeper, Jack Butland.

The match started in lively fashion with both sides showing attacking promise, however, the game’s major talking point came in the 18th minute, when Leeds striker, Noel Hunt, tumbled in the area under pressure from Kenneth Omeruo, with referee, Anthony Taylor waving away his claims for a penalty.

From then on Boro were restricted to efforts from range, which Butland was able to deal with easily.

Leeds almost stole it at the death as Ross McCormack saw Shay Given turn his shot onto the post, however, the whistle had already gone for a foul on Jonathan Woodgate in the build-up.
