  • Dickson to militants: Niger Delta survival, economy depend on peace

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson has urged militants and other criminal elements to stop scaring investors and visitors in the Niger Delta region.

Dickson insisted that the survival and economy of the region depended heavily on peace and stability of various communities in the Niger Delta.

The governor spoke at a state banquet he organised at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Hall, Government House, Yenagoa on Saturday as part of the activities to mark the 20th anniversary of the creation of Bayelsa.

The event was attended by founding fathers of the state, leaders and elders from various communities, cabinet members of the governor, members of the state House of Assembly, religious leaders, security heads and traditional rulers.

Two globally-celebrated achievers in their disciplines, foremost historian, Prof. Ebiegberi Joe Alagoa and a literary giant, Dr. Gabriel Okara, who hail from the state, were given distinguished icon awards by the governor.

Alagoa and Okara unveiled volumes of books containing collections of speeches titled, the Art of Delivery, the Power of Delivery, Unique Strides of Delivery, Restoration Unveiled and Ofurumapepe: the Return of the Great White Shark.

The books were collection of Dickson’s speeches compiled by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson.

Dickson lamented that the Niger Delta was bleeding because of the activities of some “misguided people from within and without”.

He said businesses including enterprises that had existed for a decade were relocating from the region because of the nefarious activities of criminal elements.

He said: “It is unfortunate that a few misguided people from within and without continue to engage in activities capable of scaring investors and visitors to this region.

“The region is bleeding. Businesses already established even for decades are relocating and meanwhile the irony of it is that our economic prosperity and survival depend on peace and stability in our communities, in our state and in our region”.

  •  Troops battle militants, kill seven in Niger Delta

Troops battle militants, kill seven in Niger Delta

Troops of Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe (ODS), Friday, killed seven militants during a gun battle in the creeks of Cross River State.

It was gathered that ODS’ troops of Sector 4 encountered the militants identified as members of the notorious Bakassi Strike Force (BSF), when they raided their hideouts at Ekpere Effiong creeks, in Akpabuyo area of the state.

The militants, who were dressed in military camouflage with charms and amulets, reportedly engaged the troops in a gunfire that lasted for about two hours.

On September 24, the militant group attacked a military location in Efut Isighi waterfront in Southern Cross River and reportedly killed two soldiers.

Confirming the development, the Deputy Media Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre (JMCC), Lt. Col. Thomas Otuji, said troops deployed in Efut Isighi encountered the militants again on September 30.

He said: “Troops of Sector 4 Operation DELTA SAFE deployed at Efut Isighi at about 1:00am on 30 September 2016 engaged the Bakassi Strike Force in gun battle that lasted for more than 2 hours.

“The militants who were in military camouflage uniforms carrying charms and amulets were spotted at Ekpere Effiong creek in Akpabuyo during a special operation by own troops.

“The operation led to the killing of 7 members of Bakassi Strike force militants and recovering of several arms and ammunition.

“Items recovered include, Grenade Launcher, 7.62mm NATO belted GPMG ammunition and non-disintegrating MG links.

“It should be noted that this latest reprisal attack on own troop position was sequel to ongoing operations and destruction of several militant camps, vehicles, power bike and other household items”.

Otuji the operation that led to the killing of the militants was in line with the mandate of ODS to protect oil and gas infrastructure, prevent and deter militancy, sea robbery, crude oil theft and other forms of criminality within the Niger Delta region.

In another development, he said the Sector 1 of ODS foiled an attempt by suspected vandals to breach a pipeline belonging to the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).

He identified the oil installation as the OML 30, a 16-inch trans-Forcado pipeline running from Ughelli pumping station to Focados terminal at Agbowhiame, community, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State.

He said two suspected vandals, Thomas Okoro and Maselk Boyi, were arrested for further investigations.

He said: “On interrogation, eight other suspects mentioned by the two arrested suspects are being trailed.

“Several items including; gas cylinder tubes with accessories, hacksaw, pipe wrench and personal effects were recovered at the scene.

“Operation Delta Safe wishes to assure the general public of its determination to degrade and flush out criminal elements in our communities.

“Members of the public are therefore requested to provide timely information to Operation Delta Safe detachments and other security agencies in order to apprehend these criminals from the hideouts”.

  • Militants lay down arms in Imo

Militants lay down arms in Imo

Peace returns to Imo State communities following militants’ surrender, OKODILI NDIDI reports

It was as dramatic as it was momentous. Immediately it was confirmed that militants had surrendered their weapons, pledging to be of good behaviour, the residents started celebrating. Economic and social activities began to pick up in the hitherto deserted oil-producing communities. Traditional rulers who fled their thrones in the height of the militancy came back. Ohaji-Egbema and Oguta Local Government Areas of Imo State had found peace again after two and a half years in the grips of militants.

The agitators and other cult groups in the state renounced militancy and surrendered their weapons to the state government and were pardoned.

No fewer than 300 were killed while properties millions of naira were destroyed during the crisis. At Awara, the epicentre of the militancy and cult activities in Ohaji-Egbema council, the scars of those years of horror are still fresh. Bullet-ridden and skeletal remains of razed buildings that were once the beauty of the serene community are still standing.

But thank God for the state governor Rochas Okorocha, who initiated the disarmament programme that saw the dreaded militants embracing peace and renouncing violence and all manner of criminalities.

It was an emotional moment as the residents returned in droves to start rebuilding their ruined homes.

The monarchs have written the state governor to convey their joy and gratitude that they were able to return to their kingdoms after wandering for more than two years.

Among those who surrendered their arms and ammunition and renounced militancy was the Niger Delta Red Squad, the major militant group that has been responsible for the bombing of pipelines and other oil facilities in the state. Also embracing the state government amnesty programme were over 9,000 militants belonging to other armed groups which also handed over their automatic weapons including AK 47 Riffles, Rocket Launchers, Pump Action Guns of different sizes and large quantity of explosives.

They were consequently granted pardon by the state Governor, Rochas Okorocha, who presided over the disarmament exercise under the watch of the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu and the Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade, Brigadier General KAY Isiyaku and other security Chiefs.

Presenting the militants to the governor at the Government House Chapel, the chairman of the State Disarmament Committee Mr. Kingsley Uju, an engineer, said that it took the committee over four months concerted efforts to get the agitators to renounce militancy and embrace

    the state government amnesty programme.

He noted that from their interactions with the militants at their various camps in the creeks, the major reasons they gave for taking up arms after the Federal Government Amnesty Programme of 2008 was their exclusion from the resultant empowerment programme and the

    underdevelopment of the region.

He said, “These people you see here gathered are from Oguta and Ohaji-Egbema Council Area of the state. Your Excellency, on assumption of duty, the committee met with the militants and in the course of our deliberations with them we were able to find out that the oil companies that have been operating in their land since 1953 have done nothing to develop the communities.

“It was on this note that we appealed to them to renounce militancy and embrace peace as the only way the development they are yearning for will come to them. Today these ones are yearning to be reintegrated back to the society. They have decided that they are tired of sleeping in the bush and carrying guns. This is why we are presenting these leagues of agitators today for state pardon, having lost a lot to militancy. We are appealing that the state will therefore extend pardon to these ones and save them and their families by recommending to the Federal Government to grant them full amnesty”.

While publicly renouncing their membership of all militant and cult groups, the armed militants said they were forced to resort to armed struggle as a result of marginalisation by oil companies operating in the communities.

They also expressed their anger over their exclusion from the training opportunities and empowerment offered to other militants from other Niger Delta States by the Federal Government, adding that they felt used and abandoned after they were lured to surrender their arms in 2011.

They said, “We are happy to announce today that we will no longer destroy pipelines or kill anyone. We have embraced the amnesty programme of the state government. We want to be empowered and we will help to guide the pipelines. We are happy that we have been forgiven of our crimes and we want to be reintegrated back to the society”.

Speaking further on behalf of the militants, one of the Commanders, General Bobo Uzo Ndem, aka Cross and Die, and Commander Amonon Uzoma alias Motor-Boy, admitted that they had been responsible for all the killings, and blowing of oil pipelines in the Ohaji/Egbema and Oguta Oil producing areas of the state, stating that their areas have been abandoned by oil companies operating in the area and were not carried along in the Amnesty programme of the federal government.

They assured that they won’t fight again but would rather help to ensure peace in the areas, and also asked that attention should be given to their areas while the contract for the surveillance of the oil pipelines in the areas should be given to them, thanking the governor for his initiative which has brought them out from the bush where they had been fighting.

The State Governor, charged the repentant militants to go back as responsible members of the society and contribute to the development of their state.

He assured them that all their grievances will be articulated and forwarded to the appropriate quarters for prompt attention, “those of you who are involved with militancy or in agitation, or those of you who have killed many innocent souls, today, I speak as the governor of Imo State to grant you pardon, SIN NO MORE, come back to the society and be part of the society and contribute to the development of our state.  I hereby declare as the Governor of Imo state that you are hereby pardoned”.

Okorocha stated further that, “the state Government will take every necessary step to meet your needs and make life better for you. For that reason, I hereby request that the army from today henceforth, no more shooting in Oguta and Ohaji Egbema. Your presence there will be for peace.  I hereby declare as Governor of the state, no more shooting, no more firing, you will only be there to maintain peace and order and to you no more violence”.

“After all the killings, arson, blowing of pipelines, today peace has returned in Ohaji Egbema”. The amnesty programme will be declared by the President, I will convey all your request and concerns to President Muhammadu Buhari for immediate action, he is aware you are coming here today and has promised to do the needful.  He has sent the Chief of Naval Staff who will soon arrive to see for himself. “The Federal Government is aware of what you are doing, we know that our sons and daughters are not violent people, situation and circumstances must have led you to this.  From now henceforth I believe you will keep your promises of dropping arms and been peaceful people”.

“I assure you again that the government will meet your needs, all your issues of request we shall meet them, but please it will not be an issue of today or tomorrow, it will take a short time to meet your long agitations such as light, road and hospital, we shall call on all the oil companies immediately to meet the committee which will be set up by government to discuss about the welfare of the people of the Niger Delta”.

He also stressed that, “we are aware that some of the leaders are taking advantage of this situation, and taking the money from behind and making you kill yourselves, now that government is involved you shall never see that again. So a new committee known as the Amnesty Committee by the President comes in which will be headed by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Army and Police will be members and equally the Priests and Pastors from the areas”.

Militants kill six soldiers in Bakassi

    •’Only one killed’

Suspected militants led by the wanted kingpin, Benjamin Simplee (AKA G1), leader of the Bakassi Strike Force, reportedly killed six soldiers yesterday.

It was gathered the attack was on the troops deployed at Efut Esighi waterfront in Bakassi LGA of Cross River State.

Locals said the militants came in several speedboats to carry out the attack that also left two soldiers missing in action.

But the Nigerian Army, in a swift reaction, said only one soldier was killed.

A local source said: “Around 1am, the soldiers having their guards down, stormed where the soldiers were laying siege in his base in Isighi and shot five of them dead instantly.

“The sixth one ran off with gunshot wounds but died later.”

The development created panic in the area with residents expressing fears of reprisal attacks by the army.

The attackers, it was also learnt, burnt a buffalo pickup vehicle.  Troops, however, killed two of the attackers while others escaped with gunshot wounds.  But the reinforcement sent found the missing soldiers, army authorities said.

It was also gathered the troop’s location has been reinforced with more gunboats and air component.

The clearance and pursuit operation is reportedly ongoing.

Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman said: “We would like to assure the public that this singular act would not deter us from the discharge of our duties.

“Therefore, the perpetrators of this dastardly act would be found and brought to justice.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to send an unequivocal warning to all the criminal elements in the society that intent to attack any of its locations to have a rethink.”

Commander 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Calabar, Brigadier General Bulama Biu, in a statement, said: “In the early morning hours of today, troops were attacked at Efut Isighi in Bakassi LGA by militant groups led by the most wanted leader Benjamin Simply alias G1.

“In the gun battle one soldier was killed and a pickup van burnt. Two militants were killed while others fled with gunshot wounds.

“Troops have been fully mobilised and in pursuit of the militants.

“We want to assure law-abiding citizens to be calm and avail the military and security agencies with useful informing to help track these criminals.

“A coordinated joint military action is on going to hunt down these criminals no matter their hide outs.”

  • Niger Delta bombings: Looters recruited militants against us — Buhari

Niger Delta bombings: Looters recruited militants against us — Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday took a fresh dig at those who “stole Nigeria dry.”

The looters, he said,in New York instigated the recent spate of attacks on oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta by recruiting militants to  cripple the economy under his administration

“Those who stole Nigeria dry are not happy,” Buhari told US-based Nigerian professionals at a meeting.

“They recruited militants against us in the Niger Delta, and began to sabotage oil infrastructure.

“ We lose millions of barrels per day, at a time when every dollar we can earn counts.

“ I prayed so hard for God to make me President. I ran in 2003, 2007, 2011 and in 2015, He did.

“And see what I met on ground. But I can’t complain, since I prayed for the job.

“In the military, I rose from 2nd Lieutenant to Major-General. I was military governor in 1975 over a state that is now six states. I was head of state, got detained for three years, and headed the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) which had N53 billion of that time in Nigerian banks.

“God has been very good to me, so I can’t complain. If I feel hurt by anybody, I ask God to help me forgive. He has done so much for me.”

He said the economic situation in the country is so bad now that no fewer than 27 states of the federation are finding it difficult to pay their workers.

“It is a disgrace that a minimum of 27 states, out of 36 that we have in Nigeria, can’t pay salaries,” he said.

President Buhari offered to work with every Nigerian, including the best brains in the Diaspora, to return the country to prosperity.

“Wherever you go in the world, you find highly competent and outstanding Nigerians,” Buhari’s  Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, quoted him as saying.

“They not only make great impact on their host countries and communities, their financial remittances back home also help our economy, particularly at a time like this, when things are down”.

Tracing the origin of the current economic recession,he said:”We got into trouble as a country because we did not save for the rainy day.

“For example, between 1999 and 2015, when we produced an average of 2.1 million barrels of oil per day, and oil prices stood at an average of $100 per barrel, we did not save, neither did we develop infrastructure.

“Suddenly, when we came in 2015, oil prices fell to about 30 dollars per barrel.

“I asked: ‘Where are the savings? There were none. Where are the railways? The roads? Power? None’.

“ I further asked: ‘What did we do with the billions of dollars that we made over the years? They said we bought food. Food with billions of dollars?

“I did not believe, and still do not believe.

“ In most parts of Nigeria, we eat what we grow. People in the South eat tubers, those in the North eat grains, which they plant, and those constitute over 60 per cent of what we eat. So, where did the billions of dollars go?

“We did a lot of damage to ourselves by not developing infrastructure when we had the money.”

He also updated his audience on the war against Boko Haram in the Northeast.

His words:”Talking of our military, they earned respect serving in places like Burma, Zaire, Sudan, Liberia, Sierra-Leone, and then, suddenly, that same military could no longer secure 14 out of 774 local governments in the country.

“Insurgents had seized them, calling them some sort of caliphate, and planting their flags there, till we came, and scattered them.

“We raised the morale of our military, changed the leadership, re-equipped and retrained them.

“USA, Britain and some other countries helped us, and today, the pride of our military is restored.

“Boko Haram ran riot, killing innocent people in churches, mosques, markets, schools, motor parks and so on.

“Now, we have dealt with that insurgency, and subverted their recruitment base.”

The Nigerians pledged to invest in Nigeria, if the government would provide an enabling environment that would make businesses thrive.

  • Three suspected militants arrested

    Three suspected militants arrested

Three men alleged to be members of a militant gang terrorising Iba and Igando areas of Lagos have been arrested.

Sylvester Ebi, Preye Munbo and Isaiah Ikechukwu were arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Sqaud (SARS), Ikeja, during a raid of Monkey Village.

Also arrested was a woman, said to be an informant and wife to a fleeing militant.

The woman was arrested with her baby.

It was gathered that the suspects were caught providing information on security operations in the area to to others in the creek, but upon interrogation, they confessed to be engaging in illegal bunkering.

The Nation gathered that last week’s murder of a SARS operative in the area, prompted a more aggressive search which led to their arrest.

The policemen at Ajangbadi also arrested four suspected vandals who stole 24 batteries from an MTN mast at Itire.

Contacted, the Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, said the stolen items were recovered from the vandals.

On the arrest of alleged militants, Owoseni said they were still investigating, adding that it has been established that the suspects were accomplices.

According to him, investigation revealed that the woman usually harboured militants, as well as keeps their weapons. He said that some of the criminals, it has been established, usually changed into military camouflage at her residence, and those of other suspects.

He said: “At the moment, we do not want to tag them militants. I can tell you that from preliminary investigations, they were accomplices. Some of the militants usually changed into military camouflages at the woman’s place. The information we got also indicated that she keeps weapons for them. We are investigating the case.”

  • PDP ‘imported’ 8, 000 militants for Edo polls —Oshiomhole

PDP ‘imported’ 8, 000 militants for Edo polls —Oshiomhole

Accuses opposition party of winning elections with bullets
Governor’s allegations are baseless —PDP chair
Wike admits supporting candidate with N2bn
Real reasons governorship election was postponed

GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State yesterday fired a broadside at his Delta and Rivers States counterparts for allegedly registering 8, 000 militants in  his state for the purpose of manipulating the September 28 governorship election.

He observed that Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers) and Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) were neck deep in plans to “make peaceful election impossible” when the people of Edo go to the polls to elect their next governor in two weeks time.

“Our opponent, unable to find local thugs to help them perpetrate violence which they have done between 1999 and 2007 when I took over, resorted to liaising with my brothers in the sub-region, Delta and Rivers, in particular, to export criminals and militants into Edo State in order to make peaceful election impossible,” Oshiomhole said when he received the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris during a courtesy visit at Government House, Benin City.

The PDP said the allegation was baseless.

Originally scheduled for today, the election was shifted at the instance of the Department of State security and the police who said that security reports at their disposal suggested that the terror sect, Boko Haram, had perfected its plan to unleash terror on the state if the election were to proceed today.

Oshiomhole, who also hosted a team of European observers yesterday, said the PDP has a reputation for rigging especially in the South-south. He said he first smashed the opposition’s rigging machine by eventually winning the much manipulated 2007 election. “I fought them through the legal process. Painstakingly established how I was rigged out, I got my mandate restored. It never happened before, and nobody appreciates the essence of free and fair election more than myself,” he said to the observers.

During his meeting with the IGP, Oshiomhole said: “In line with my tradition, I have always tried to speak out on any matter that I am worried about. I first raised this alarm on the eve of INEC Continuing Voters’ Registration exercise, an exercise that has been designed to register those who have become eighteen between the last registration and the current one.

“But these criminals who are determined to perpetrate violence and deny us the beauty of a peaceful election, unable to find local participants have chosen to import these militants with the support of two or so of my brothers. When I say brothers, I mean brother governors. It doesn’t matter if I disagree with them, they are my brothers.

“They are exporting militants to Edo State to register so that with the PVC in their hands, they will appear to have the lawful basis to be present at the designated polling units where they are expected to unleash violence on Election Day.

“When I raised this alarm, I should expect naturally that they are not as courageous as they seem. They denied that there was any such plan, but happily our ever vigilant, peace-loving electorate was able to apprehend some of these people from other states that came into Edo State for the purpose of this exercise.

“At least, 13 of them were handed over to the police. The IG may wish to establish what has happened to those people who were handed over. So, we handed them over to the police in line with what we were expected to do as civilised people.

“Having done that, we are clear that there are a lot of people, up to 8, 000 of them, who are non-resident in Edo State, who are not indigenes of Edo State, who are indigenes and residents of Delta and Rivers States and some other states in the South-south, some from Bayelsa State who have registered for the sole purpose not to swell the votes, but to be present in various locations on election day.

“Now, as part of the processes they put in place to effect this, they had conspirators in INEC that made available to them data capturing machine in the residences of various opposition leaders. We shared these experiences with the police and the DSS.”

The governor said that the people of Edo State are anxious to have a free and fair election “but the challenge is these people who are determined to import thuggery and violence, and they have an easier task, and we have a more difficult task to protect the electoral process.”

However, the Edo State chapter of the PDP dismissed Oshiomhole’s allegation against Wike and Okowa as a deceit. It warned the governor to show respect to his fellow governors.

State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, in a telephone chat said that the allegation was baseless and an indictment of the security agencies for 8000 persons to move into the state without detection.

On the N2 billion allegedly donated to the PDP campaign by some state by having regards to the very hard work and huge resources deployed towards the election by all concerned.

“On our part, we have traversed the nooks and crannies of the state in the course of our electioneering campaigns, and we have been able to effectively market our candidates and our manifesto.

“Our members have been fully sensitized and mobilized in readiness for the election, culminating in our final campaign at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Sept. 6, which recorded the highest level of mobilization ever witnessed in that facility.”

He added:  “Data capturing machines were found to have been given to unauthorized persons to carry out illegal registration. A case in point is that of Alhaji Nakowa, a known PDP chieftain in Etsako Central.

“He was arrested with some unscrupulous INEC staff while engaged in illegal registration in a private residence in the middle of the night.

“All these, with the reported threat by the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Nyesom Nwike, to the effect that the APC people should go and write their will, should be a source of concern to any right thinking person.

“You recall that the last time the same man issued the same threat in Port Harcourt, several people lost their lives including youth corps members who had been deployed to assist in the exercise in that State.

“The postponement, therefore, provides an opportunity for security agencies to address these concerns in addition to whatever other threats they may have discovered.”

Reacting to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s decision to postpone the election till September 26, the state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, dismissed the PDP as a party that has no credibility in the state and advocated that the postponement should not be longer than a week and “We have a big event in Edo on September 26 which is the Oba’s coronation. Before that day, there are other events that must be done. It will not be proper to hold election during that period, why not postpone the election for one week?

“It is false claim that the APC was afraid of defeat. We defeated the PDP in 16 local government in the last election held in the state. We are ready for the election and we will win. The PDP has no credibility in this state.”

But the state’s PDP chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, described the INEC decision as a postponement of doomsday for the APC.  He said: “For us in the PDP, they have only postponed doomsday for the APC and Adams Oshiomhole in Edo.

“What they have failed to tell Nigerians is that they have no sellable candidate.  What is playing out is alike a drama series. Anytime they decide to conduct the election, we are waiting to defeat the APC.”

Lending his support Orbih’s postion, Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose said the postponement is bad signal and beginning of the end for democracy in Nigeria.

“It is obvious that the All Progressives Congress (APC) feared that it can’t win the election and is ready to employ whatever crude means to subvert the wish of the people.”

In a separate chat with our correspondent, the Chairman of United Progressive Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie, said the postponement is not healthy for the development of democracy in the country.

“I see it as an executive interference in the work of the electoral body. It is also an indictment on the security agency. I don’t know what they need to do again but I would expect that they should take Nigerians into confidence.”

  • We’re not criminals, militants tell military

We’re not criminals, militants tell military

The Co-ordinator of the Niger Delta People Volunteer Front (NDPVF), Mr  Asu Simeon Mbi, popularly known as General Simba, has told the Nigerian military to stop tagging them as criminals and economic saboteurs.

General Simba said that using derogatory words to describe them was provocative.

Speaking yesterday on the heels of the Defense Headquarters’ vow to sustain the military onslaught in the Niger Delta and purge the region of “criminals and economic saboteurs”, the militant leader also vowed that they would sustain their agitations.

The militant leader, who claimed to be speaking for other militant groups in his region, said Niger Delta militants were not criminals, describing themselves as freedom fighters, fighting the Federal Government’s unjust leadership.

He said:”We are freedom fighters and not criminals and nobody, no authority should call us criminals or economic saboteurs.  We are fighting a just cause and no amount of threat from any quarters would dampen our spirit.

“The Niger Delta struggle is a collective one, and there is no way we can be subdued. There is no going back and everybody should sustain the struggle.

“We are still very strong in this fight. We are up and doing and will not bow to any threat by the military.  We have long been totally neglected and enough is enough”.

  • ‘Stop militants threatening Utorogu Gas Plant’

The Environmental Health and Communications Initiative (EHCI), a Non-Governmental Organisation, has urged the Federal Government to stop militants terrorising a section of Delta State.

The NGO, with a mandate to monitor the communities hosting the multi-billionaire Utorogu Gas Plant in Ughelli South council of Delta State, said the activities of militants endanger the livelihood of residents.

A report by EHCI after a study of how agitation by the Niger Delta Peace Coalition (NPDC) against companies in Iwrekan, Otor-Udu and Otu-Jeremi communities, which host the Utorogu Gas plant Phase 2, showed that militancy endangers their economic lives and constitute grave security challenges in the Niger Delta.

It called on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the group ‘’because any attempt to jeopardise operations of the existing companies in the area, would further worsen the economic hardship of the people as these companies, such as Lee Engineering, are the ones building and maintaining the stability and economic wellbeing of the communities.”

The stakeholders, who spoke in the report include: Matthew Ediri Egbi, Okaboro of Ughievhen Kingdom, some of his palace chiefs,  and the past Chairman of the Iwrekan Community Development Committee (CDC), Chief George Djukpan.

A statement by Comrade Ogheneovo Otobrise and Egbanki Onovughe, said any attempt to breach the peace and security of the area through fraudulent propaganda would not be tolerated.

It urged security agencies to stop the militants, adding: “The organisation has lost touch with reality and is only trying to blackmail the locals and shut down the economic livewire of the people through reckless blackmail and baseless, untruthful and fake petitions aimed at cheap propaganda.”

  • Militants threaten to attack soldiers in Niger Delta

A group, Niger Delta Cleansers (NDC), has threatened to attack more soldiers in the region if the federal government does not withdraw them from the creeks in the next 14 days.

Its spokesman, Col Fikenibai Miesin, in a statement said the militants will launch ‘Operation Hurricane’ to face soldiers deployed in the region.

Miesin condemned the ‘Operation Crocodile Smile’ launched by the federal government even after most militants have embraced the ongoing dialogue process in the region.

The statement reads: “The Niger Delta cleansers is unhappy with  the federal government for deploying soldiers in some Niger Delta communities under the operational code “Operation Crocodile Smile at a time dialogue is seeing the light of day

“We call on the federal government to immediately withdraw all soldiers deployed in the Niger Delta communities.

“Because of this we have perfected plans to launch ‘Operation Hurricane’ to combat government forces. We are giving them two weeks to withdraw the soldiers or face attacks.”
