Afenifere, Mimiko reject grazing commission bill

A Pan Yoruba socio-political organisation  Afenifere has rejected the Grazing Commission Bill before the National Assembly.

Its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, who spoke in Akure , the Ondo State capital, yesterday said the bill was not in the best interest of the Yoruba.

He said the bill was meant to favour a section of the country.

Described the bill as obnoxious and unacceptable to the Yoruba, Fasoranti urged all the traditional rulers in Yorubaland to caution the National Assembly against passing the bill into law.

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko said the proposed law cannot work in Ondo State.

He said the proposed law rather than solving the problem would aggravate it in many parts of the country, especially Yorubaland.

Fasoranti maintained that the bill seeks to turn private cattle rearing into a national affair by setting up a federal body to take care of interest of herdsmen against the interest of other occupations.

He said the bill, if passed into law, would forcefully take land from state governments and individual owners in violation of the Land Use Act and all legal means of land holding for the purpose of grazing

    reserves.

The Afenifere leader noted that the bill will prescribe a fine of N500,000 or five years imprisonment or both for the owners of the land if they are found on such land taken over by the commission.

His said: “We reject any law that would rob a set of citizens of their possessions and award to another set of citizens as this offensive bill attempts to do. That is against the principle of natural justice.

“There is also the added danger of making national the indigene settler problem that has remained intractable in the Middle Belt area and create more centres of conflict.”

“It is against the federal principle for the government of the federation to violate the rights of other sections of the country to please a group from an ethnic unit over and above the interest of

    other over 400 ethnic groups.

“We therefore stand with the decision of the 2014 National Conference, which recommended the scrapping of grazing routes for the establishment of ranches. The world has become too civilised and far beyond roaming animals all over the country as if we are in medieval period.”

  • Mimiko to Fed Govt: stop farmers/herdsmen clashes

Mimiko to Fed Govt: stop farmers/herdsmen clashes

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko yesterday said the Federal Government must stop the incessant killings of people, particularly farmers, by Fulani herdsmen.

The governor added that if the government fails to act, the country may be heading toward a precipice.

He prevailed on members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) to shun their planned reprisal on herdsmen in the interest of peaceful and harmonious co-existence.

At a meeting with OPC members, Mimiko called on residents to live together peacefully, irrespective of their ethnic and tribal affiliation.

The OPC members threatened  a reprisal attack, following the killing of a security guard attached to the farm of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae, in Akure by Fulani herdsmen.

Ayodele Ige was the OPC coordinator in Akure North Local Government.

Mimiko also noted that urgent actions are not taken, people may resort to self help.

The governor, who picked holes in the proposed grazing reserves bill by the National Assembly, said it would aggravate the crisis between farmers and herdsmen.

His words: “We are moving towards the precipice and the earlier we pull back the better for us all. All major stakeholders must come together on how to resolve this issue.

“These herdsmen must be called to order. These wanton destructions, audacious incursions on other people’s territory cannot continue for too long.

“We must be concerned as a nation that this is a menace that poses a threat to us as nation.

“I am again appealing to Mr President and all the major stakeholders to let’s sort out this.

“For me, I see the grazing reserves aggravating the problem, though I’ve not read the law but I don’t see how that law can find comfort with the land use act. The control of land is vested in the governor, I can’t see any federal law that will compulsorily acquire any land from any state, in my state, for example, it cannot work.

“The owners of these cattle, according to the information at my disposal, are well to do people, they are elite. If cattle rearing is a commercial venture, why should they not contribute to set up the ranches? After all, they don’t sell these cattle for free.

“We have been talking about diversification and agriculture is the main focus but in my state there’s hardly any medium scale or large scale farmers that has not had any encounter or the other with the herdsmen.

“I think if we don’t do anything about the activities of these herdsmen, I can see a threat to the security of this country so it’s a major challenge and I think the President and all major stakeholders should take this as a very serious challenge.”

OPC State Coordinator Pius Ogunsanya said members would go ahead with their planned reprisal, if security operatives fail to apprehend the killers.

  • APC: Mimiko apostle of do-or-die politics

APC: Mimiko apostle of do-or-die politics

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State yesterday described a statement by Governor Olusegun Mimiko asking President Muhammadu Buhari to conduct free and credible elections as “ironic and laughable”.

Its Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Adesanya, alleged that the governor has never won a poll conducted credibly.

He said: “Mimiko has no moral right to talk about credible election when he is the leader of do-or-die politics.

“Buhari has always supported credible elections and championed the campaign for free and fair election in the country.

“Mimiko has no moral uprightness to demand free and credible election.

“He is an exponent of the opposite of what he has called for. Nigerians have not forgotten how Mimiko and his colleagues used undemocratic tactics to divide the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) under the leadership of Rotimi Ameachi.

“The governor led the team which claimed 16 is greater than 19. What has changed? That has damaged his democratic credentials beyond repair.”

  • ‘Mimiko’s eight-year rule has been a waste of resources’

‘Mimiko’s eight-year rule has been a waste of resources’

Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) is a chieftain of the All Progressives Party (APC). He was the governorship candidate of the then defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ondo State. Akeredolu plans to contest the November governorship election. In this interview with SEGUN AJIBOYE, the former President of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) speaks on his experience in the last election, the proposed primary and other issues.

    Why are you running again?

It is necessary to have a change in the leadership of Ondo State. Governance in the state has in the last seven years, which will now culminate into eight years before the election, been a waste of resources and one is convinced that the time has come for us to make meaningful in the lives of our people and for them to at least have the impact of meaningful governance. To give the people the benefit of good governance so that they can derive the most which you can get from any government.

The PDP has maintained that the APC is not on ground in the state. How confident are you that your party can displace the PDP in the election?

What we need to do is to look at statistics. You see, my confidence is based on and backed by statistics. In the last election, in which you had widespread manipulation, even if we take the figures declared as being right, the LP scored about 35 percent of the votes, we were given 30 percent plus and Olusola Oke was given 30 percent plus. now that Olusola Oke is now in APC, you would agree that the votes that the two of us can gather is enough sign we are not bragging. The defeat which we were able to wreak on the PDP in the presidential election, which of course we won fair and squarely, is fair enough to say that the APC is not bragging. We have members of the House of Representatives and two senators. Can you call that bragging? Sure, that cannot be bragging. We are on ground in Ondo State and we are sure of winning the governorship election.

How would the APC manage the crowd of aspirants that have shown interest in the ticket?

Our party, the ACN at the time, did not fall victim of the crowd of aspirants as you put it. The party adopted a method to pick its candidate. Well, a number of people reacted to it and raised objection, which I believe have been taken into consideration by the party to have a full-fledge primary. With this method now, I believe that there cannot be any form of trouble that the party cannot handle. We are all members of the same family, and by the time of getting the nomination form, we would begin to understand what to do. I am also sure that after the primary, every other person would come forward to support whoever wins. Don’t forget that I have always said that primary is an essential part of party politics. All of us submit ourselves to the process, and for me, if you submit yourself to a process, you have to abide with the outcome of that process.

You’ll agree that Governor Mimiko is one shrewd politician. How do you intend to beat him at his own game?

Mimiko believes he is strong, but he was bruised and battered in the last presidential election. He was there and he campaigned for Jonathan, but he lost woefully. Mimiko’s time has come and gone. There is nothing like Mimiko again in Ondo State. I think what he is trying to do now is to see if he can have a situation whereby he would set, maybe Akure people, against other people. He wants to set the people against one another.

What particular lesson did you take away from the experience of 2011?

The major lesson that I took away from the last election is that, on the last day, particularly on the day of election, you need a core of dedicated people to serve, whether as agents or representatives, or to do things for you. You cannot afford to leave that important aspect of electioneering in the hands of people who are not committed to your cause or the party. people are simply after money. When you have people who are more or less traders, then you are in trouble. So, we would try now to win the primary. After that, we would go ahead to get people who believe in our cause. Any dedicated party man would be will to sacrifice anything for the success of his party. That is one particular lesson that I have learnt, that you don’t go around with people who don’t believe in your cause.

What would be your main goal as governor?

You know that the major responsibility of government is to provide security for your people. And in the light of the problems that we have had, job creation is key to everything. And there is no way that we can continue like this without creating jobs. These would be my major goals. And when I say that Mimiko has failed, let him point to one thing or one major outfit that he established that has created jobs for a thousand people. He claimed he was doing something about agriculture, that he had Ore. But the place is now totally abandoned and has been overtaken by bush. The boys came to complain that they were not paid, and they left the place. H also claimed that he had a ranch, there is no single cow there now. He and I know that agriculture is key, because of all the value chain that it will bring and the employment that will follow it is very important for everybody. We made a lot of money. Aside from Lagos, Ondo State is about the only state that has received the largest allocation.  Why is that for eight years, he abandoned a state university, and just at the last hour rushed back there to say he is doing something. Meanwhile, he established a new university. You don’t have to abandon the university in Okitipupa because you want to have a university in Ondo. I am not against establishing anything in Ondo, but you don’t have to cripple the other one because of that. I expect him to build on whatever infrastructure that he met on ground. A number of us have thought that we should have a harbor today, but we don’t have it, despite the fact that we have the longest coastline. We have the Olokola Free Trade Zone project. We had Dangote who showed interest in it, and I think he should made sure that Dangote builds his factory there.

Looking at the financial status of the states, what is that thing that is motivating you to run?

When the going gets tough, only the tough gets going. I am somebody with absolute confidence in my capabilities and capacity. I am never afraid of anything. I often guided by a song by Fela Anikulapo Kuti that says ‘Na goat dey run. A man will stand’. I am a man and I am ready to face anything. That has been my approach. If you recollect my message when I was running for the presidency of the NBA, my campaign mantra was ‘prosecuting our conviction with courage’. So, for me, whatever the problem may be, it is one that a courageous person can tackle. A man who has a vision will see beyond today. And I can see beyond today, the economy of Nigeria will not remain like this forever. I am a man of faith, and in my time, I believe the economy will be good. Even if the economy nosedives, the best of a good leader is to manage the affairs of the state within the resources he has. There are many things that the governor can cut down on. All these we would take into consideration when we get to office. I tell you, the problem is that our people spend too much on frivolities, which they have refused to cut down.

What would you describe as your achievements as a technocrat?

You are asking me to blow my own trumpet. But, why not blow it? I have not been a technocrat all my life. I had been the attorney-general of my state, which means running a ministry. I was the Chairman of Legal Aid Council of Nigeria. And my records are there to show. As the attorney-general, we laid a foundation that other states are now trying to follow. The governor then, Onyeregbulem was riding a 504 car, but we made sure that the chief judge had a Mercedes car. It was after we did it in Ondo State that the Supreme Court judges were given Mercedes cars. I did all that because I believed that we needed to enhance the status of judges. All my life as bar activist, I have fought for improving the status and remuneration of judges.

How do you intend to resolve the quagmire in Owo and Akoko politics, particularly considering the number of aspirants from the senatorial zone?

We are where we are today because of our disconnect with history. You see, a number of us contesting do have a disconnect with history. I take the north senatorial district, comprising Akoko, Owo and Ose, and I try to trace the history of our political relationship. There has always been this relationship among us, so there is no need for any conflict. But, I know that we are going to resolve it at the end of the day. You see, our sense of equity will help us to resolve it. When you talk of a sense of history, we have had Baba Adekunle Ajasin from Owo/Ose, who had been governor. We had Baba Adebayo Adebafarati from Akoko. He too had been governor. When he was governor, we had the senator from Owo/Ose. But now, we have a second term senator from Akoko, so why do we have this problem. In the last eight years, we have had two deputy governors from Akoko, it has produced senators. So, with this, I know that the people will reason, even if the aspirants refuse to reason. The people’s sense of history and equity will prevail at the end of the day. We are all part of the same family, and we cannot afford to alienate a section of the family. We have had a governor form the south for six years. We have a governor from the cntral for eight years. So, naturally, our sense of fair play, equity and history would prevail.

  • Mimiko to Buhari: give credible polls

Mimiko to Buhari: give credible polls

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko yesterday said the greatest asset President Muhammadu Buhari can give to Nigeria is to promote free and credible elections.

He said credible election is the key to the greatness of Nigeria.

Mimiko spoke at the state Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akure , the state capital.

At the congress conducted by PDP national delegation led by Mohammed Iman, former Commissioner for Community Development and Cooperative Services Clement Faboyede was re-elected chairman.

Faboyode became chairman in 2014 when Mimiko joined the party from Labour Party (LP).

The governor, who is the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, assured that the PDP would continue to win elections in the state.

He said elections in the state, under the PDP government will continue to be exciting , violence free in line with the mantra of one man , one vote.

Mimiko noted that “PDP in Ondo state is now a united family. It is a sign of greater thing to come to the party.

“It is only PDP that can defeat PDP in Ondo State. Once we are united, it is evident that we will continue to rule this state.”

Fatai Adams was voted Deputy Chairman, Oyedele Ibine (Secretary), Banji Okunomo (Publicity Secretary), Femi Akinwehinmi (Treasurer) and Kunle Akintan (Organising Secretary),  among others.

Ondo APC slams Wabba for comment on Mimiko

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State yesterday criticised a comment credited to Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Ayuba Wabba on the tenure and performance of Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

The NLC President, in a letter of commendation, congratulated the governor on his seventh year anniversary and the state’s 40th anniversary for transforming Ondo to a modern and one of the leading states in the country.

But the APC in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Adesanya, said: “On completion of his uneventful eight years tenure, all indications have shown that Mimiko would be leaving the state worse than he met it.

“The seven years is characterised by pains, anti-masses policies and suffering. Where are the six-lane roads the governor promised the Akure people? Where is the small London he promised to turn the state capital into?

“Why did he abandon all the projects the Olusegun Agagu administration could not complete? Projects such as the Owena Water Dam which the Agagu administration spent billions of naira on; the Olokola Free-Trade Zone; the OK-LNG Plant; the uncompleted Akure Township Stadium at Araromi; the refinery he promised during his campaign for the second term, to mention but a few.”

    Mimiko warns oil palm vandals

ndo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko has warned illegal occupants on the Okitipupa Oil Palm Plc to leave the plantation.

Giving the warning at the weekend, Mimiko said with the inauguration of the 27.5KM Ajagba-Iyansan Road, sanity would be restored to the plantation.

Noting that the road passes through the plantation, the governor said the cost of transportation from the plantation, which was limited to the waterways, had been a major issue militating against the company’s smooth operation.

”One of the factors that has over the years affected the production cost of this company is the cost of transportation of harvested palm fruits through the waterways.

“The absence of this road over the years has resulted in the illegal occupation of the farm by unscrupulous persons.”

Mimiko warned the illegal occupants to steer clear of the plantation.

Handing over the quit notice, he said: “Let me sound it loud and clear to those occupying the plantation illegally that  the endgame has come and that it would no longer be business as usual.”.

Oshiomhole, Ajimobi, Mimiko, Lalong, others preach peace

GOVERNORS yesterday joined other eminent Nigerians to felicitate with the citizens on Easter celebration.

They urged Christian faithful to imbibe the virtues of peace, prayers, love, sacrifice and forgiveness, which they said are the lessons of Easter.

Edo State: In a statement issued by Peter Okhiria, his Chief Press Secretary, Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole said: “As we join Christians all over the world to celebrate this Easter, I urge the faithful in Edo State and Nigeria to imbibe the core values of Christianity and the lessons of the season, which are sacrifice, love, sharing and forgiveness of sins.

“We should remember that the progenitor of the Christian faith is also known as the ‘Prince of Peace’ and we should, therefore, embrace peace with all men and maintain the peace which we have enjoyed in the state in the past years.

“As we celebrate, we should not forget to extend a hand of fellowship to the less-privileged among us, as Christ taught us to ‘love our neighbours as our ourselves.’”

Oyo State: Governor Abiola Ajimobi called on Nigerians to emulate the spirit of forgiveness and sacrifice.

Ajimobi spoke while addressing reporters yesterday on his Easter message at the governor’s office, Agodi, Ibadan.

According to him, “Easter means forgiveness, it means Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins for us too to learn to forgive and sacrifice.

“You must sacrifice your time, enjoyment for this country to move forward. For Oyo State to be made better, it is not the job of the government alone. It is the collective responsibility of all of us to make sure this our state is better and progress.”

Ondo State: Governor Olusegun Mimiko called for sustained prayers, sacrifice, cooperation and understanding from the governed to enable government serve them better in the face of current economic reality.

Mimiko, in his message, said the occasion should not be seen as a period of winning and dinning alone, adding that it is a period for sober reflection.

He challenged the people to be more prayerful  than before and implored them  to assist the government by making more sacrifice.

Plateau State: Governor Simon Bako Lalong enjoined Christian faithful to use the period to reflect on Christ’s sacrificial work of redemption on the Cross of Calvary.

The governor, who said as Christians reflect on the passion of Christ on Good Friday and the victory of a righteous life over death at Easter, they should remember that these symbolised “the gracious and merciful atonement of the sins of mankind”.

The governor, who spoke through his Director of Press Samuel Nanle in Jos yesterday, said: “True Christian practice must correspond in showing love and sacrifice to make a difference in the lives of fellow human beings as exemplified by Jesus Christ.”

Abia State: Governor Okezie Ikpeazu called on the Christian community to use the period of the celebration of Easter to pray for the country’s unity.

Ikpeazu said the period should be used to reflect on the life and times of Christ, which the people should try to emulate for peace and unity to reign supreme in the country.

Kogi State: Governor Yahaya Bello urged Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of sacrifice, which, he said, is the hallmark of the Easter celebration, saying the season calls for sober reflection, sacrifice, tolerance and unity.

  • Fire at Mimiko’s office as Sheriff visits

Fire at Mimiko’s office as Sheriff visits

The visit of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff, to Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko was disrupted yesterday as the multi-billion naira executive chamber of the governor’s office was gutted by fire.

The PDP Chairman, who arrived in the state at 1.15pm, was expected to address party leaders and journalists in the chamber.

Sheriff was in a meeting with Mimiko in his main office when the incident occurred.

The fire was said to have been caused by power surge from the ante-room of the governor’s office.

Journalists and PDP leaders, who were waiting for Sheriff at the executive chamber office, discovered the fire but they could not put it out.

The governor left with his guest to the Government House, which is about two kilometers to his office.

Workers rushed out of their offices. Firemen and the Commissioner for Works, Gboye Adegbenro, arrived on the scene 20 minutes after the incident.

Commissioner for Information Kayode Akinmade said it was a minor incident.

According to him, “there was a power surge at the ante room that links to the executive chamber of the governor’s office.

“Our fire fighters responded promptly and put out the fire. Work is now back to normal at the governor’s office.”

Akinmade said he addressed reporters to set the record straight.

“It is a general thing. Of recent, I think the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office in Calabar was on fire.

“Thank God that our fire fighters were able to prevent it from spreading.”

The commissioner said he could not ascertain the level of damage.

At the Government House, Sheriff said he was in the state to consult with the PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman ahead of the party’s convention in May.

“I am in Ondo State to visit our governor general. I was in Rivers State on Tuesday to campaign for our two senatorial candidates and 21 State Assembly candidates ahead of Saturday’s re-run.

“I have a plan to visit all states. I called the governor general yesterday morning that I was in Rivers and that I want to come and visit him.

“My visit to Ondo is to discuss with the governor on how we will have a successful convention by the end of May, and all the preparations for the convention are on.

“All the re-run elections held recently show that the party is united because we won. It is a sign that all the aggrieved party members have buried their differences.”

Mimiko said since Sheriff came on board, PDP has won every election.

The governor said PDP needs a lot of coerciveness to move forward, adding that Sheriff’s political experience would bring the party together.
