  • Mimiko clamours for staggered elections

    •Gets INEC’s Certificate of Return

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko yesterday canvassed staggered elections to curb electoral malpractices.

He spoke when he received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) National Commissioner in charge of Southwest, Prof. Lai Olorode, in Akure.

His Deputy, Alhaji Ali Olanusi, was also given his certificate at the ceremony attended by Mimiko’s wife, Olukemi and Labour Party’s (LP’s) National Chairman, Dan Nwuanyanwu, among others.

Mimiko said: “One critical element of success is these staggered elections. I’m sure we did not deliberately craft it, but it has been crafted for us.

“It appears God has decided to intervene in our electoral affairs through this. I believe our electoral umpire, INEC, should go to that and create a regimen of staggered elections for the country.

“From my experience in the elections that took place in Edo and Ondo states on these staggered elections option, it will probably be one credible solution to the challenges of electoral malpractices in Nigeria.”

He said INEC should ensure that the logos of the political parties that are similar are not printed on the ballot papers close to each other, to avoid voided votes.

Governor Mimiko advocated continuous voter registration to include those who have attained the voting age.

He hailed INEC for its increased commitment to have a credible electoral system, and thanked President Goodluck Jonathan for fulfilling his promise to provide security.

Olorode said: “Though INEC is claiming to be perfect, there are bound to be challenges. The most important thing is to remove what remains of electoral malfeasance.”

He said INEC has zero tolerance for indiscipline among its workers, adding: “Only God knows the number of INEC officials that have been axed since 2011.”

Olorode, who noted that the over 40 per cent voters’ turnout is the highest so far in the country, described the jubilation that greeted the declaration of the result as an evidence of transparent conduct of the poll.

  • Mimiko’s victory is pyrrhic, says ACO

The Akeredolu Campaign Organisation (ACO) has described the victory of Governor Olusegun Mimiko in Saturday’s election as pyrrhic.

The Director of Media, Publicity and Strategy of ACO, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, said the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) recorded improvement in the poll compared with its previous performances in elections in Ondo State; while the fortune of the Labour Party (LP) dwindled as a result of the rejection of Mimiko by the majority of voters.

He said: “It is clear that in contrast with the performance of Mimiko in 2007 based on which he was declared winner in 2009 by the Court of Appeal, where he polled 198,261, which represented 55 per cent of the votes cast, his Saturday’s 260,199 votes represent only 41.7 per cent of the total 624,659 votes cast, reflecting a proportional decline; meaning the opposition got majority of the votes.

“When the election result was declared, Akure wore a mourning look until Mimiko’s supporters had to be forced out for celebration as against the spontaneous celebration of 2009 after Mimiko’s mandate was restored. This speaks volume of the authenticity of the victory.

“The ACN gave a good showing in all the local governments, despite the massive rigging, intimidation of supporters in the party’s strongholds and cancellation of results in Idanre, Ipele and Okitipupa, among others.

“We are poised to put the LP government on its toes from day one, pending the outcome of the meeting of the leadership of our great party, which will decide our next line of action.”

  • Youths lash PDP leaders for congratulating Mimiko

    Say election was scientifically-rigged

The Ondo State Youth Assembly (OYA) yesterday decried Saturday’s governorship election, which declared Governor Olusegun Mimiko as the winner. It said the poll was scientifically-rigged.

The group, which is one of those under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also condemned the national leadership of the party for congratulating Mimiko.

It noted that the party’s national leadership had failed to study the election results and listen to the people before congratulating Mimiko, adding that it rejected the result.

A statement by the group’s Chairman, Rasheed Elegbeleye, described the congratulatory messages as hasty and unacceptable.

OYA alleged that the election was marred by irregularities in many local governments, including Akure South, Akoko North East, Idanre, Ilaje and Ese-Odo.

It said: “The election was full of irregularities. In Ese-Odo Local Government Area, the leader of the ex-militants, who has been receiving N30 million every month from Mimiko for more than a year now, led a team of former militants from Balyesa State to disrupt the poll in three wards, the strongholds of the PDP in the area.

“In Idanre, the Labour Party (LP) thugs thumb-printed ballot papers in the rural areas. There were no security men in those places for reasons we don’t know.”

The group also alleged that while election materials were not brought to some parts of Ilaje, results of some wards where PDP won were cancelled.

According to OYA, “some ballot boxes were snatched in Akure South and ballot papers thumb-printed by LP thugs. There was over-voting in some units in Akoko North East and most of the observers were LP supporters, such as FOMWAN.”

  • Oshiomhole congratulates Mimiko

Edo State Governor Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has congratulated Governor Olusegun Mimiko on his victory in Saturday’s election.

In a statement issued in Benin City, Oshiomhole said: “I wish to congratulate Governor Olusegun Mimiko on emerging victorious in the titanic electoral contest in Ondo State on October 20.

“From the results, it is clear that the Labour Party’s candidate is the people’s choice, just as the standard bearers of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deserve praise for giving a good account of themselves. In the circumstance, it is only natural that one person will carry the day.

“So, I also like to congratulate the duo of Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, of ACN and Chief Olusola Oke of PDP on a gallant showing.”

  • Jonathan congratulates Mimiko

President Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated Governor Olusegun Mimiko on his declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State.

In a statement by his spokesman, Dr Reuben Abati, President Jonathan also commended the electorate of Ondo State and INEC personnel and security agencies who ensured that the elections were peacefully and successfully conducted.

President Jonathan urged Governor Mimiko to be prepared to work even harder to justify his reelection.

He assured Mimiko that the Federal Government will continue to engage constructively and positively with the Ondo State Government in collaborative efforts to achieve faster socio-economic development and better living conditions for people in the state and all other parts of Nigeria.

  • Mimiko to Jega: INEC must make our votes count in Ondo

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko yesterday appealed to the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, to ensure that votes count in Saturday’s election.

He said the people would not allow the manipulation of the poll, to avert the scenario of the 1983 election when attempts were made to subvert the will of people.

Mimiko, who spoke at a rally in Akure, hailed President Goodluck Jonathan for assuring that there would be free and fair election.

He said: “We want to thank Mr. President for giving Nigeria a free and fair election in Edo State. He promised and delivered. We believe he is a man of his words. He has promised that there will be a free and fair poll in Ondo State and we also believe him.

“We appeal to INEC to, for the sake of our nation, for the sake of peace in our land, ensure that election on Saturday is not manipulated. I appeal to Prof. Jega that it is not enough for you to be a man of integrity; you must also ensure that all officers under you are not unduly influenced.”

  • Why Mimiko can’t win Ondo election

Why Mimiko can’t win Ondo election

As the clock ticks daily to the D-Day for the Ondo State gubernatorial election and the flurry of political activities and intrigues that accompany it, the question on the lips of observers is; can Mimiko win? The answer is hanging in the air but the reason for asking the question is not far-fetched. Olusegun Rahman Mimiko, Governor of Ondo State and until recently, the candidate to beat in the October 20, gubernatorial election in the state, is the candidate of the Labour Party. He is the only governor produced by Labour Party in Nigeria. His major contenders are Olusola Oke of the PDP and Rotimi Akeredolu of the ACN.

Watching the debate of the candidates on AIT last Thursday, Mimiko looked troubled, emaciated and forlorn. Olusola Oke of the PDP was in his best element while Rotimi Akeredolu did not do badly. Recently, a poll watch that gave victory to Akeredolu popularly called Aketi with 40.28 percent; Mimiko came a distant second with 24.84 while Olusole Oke came third with 22.84. This may be correct considering the turn of events in Ondo State in the last few weeks. What led to the turn of events for Mimiko who three months ago was sure to beat other candidates silly in a free and fair election?

Mimiko rode to power with a lot of goodwill arising from the 2009 landmark judgment of the Court of Appeal, Benin division which returned him as the duly elected governor of the state while stripping the then incumbent, Olusegun Agagu of the PDP the certificate of return already issued by INEC. Mimiko was so popular that his inauguration witnessed multitudes of supporters from within and outside the state. Overwhelmed with the crowd and level of support, he wept. He promised to work for them and they believed him. But shortly after he assumed the reins of power, the real Mimiko manifested. He reduced governance in Ondo State to a family affair by alienating leaders of his party and his close aides in major decisions of government.

The first sign of trouble was when a Senator from his party defected to the ACN. But when the state chairman of the party, Olaiya Oni resigned, it was a sign that all is not well with Mimiko. Recently, five of his closed aides resigned in a day while others followed in quick succession. His party members have left in droves. The trouble was however temporarily mitigated by the seeming performance of Mimiko especially the N5billon street lighting of Oba Adesida road and the water dispensing roundabout. This soon pale into insignificance when the scale fell off the eyes of Ondo people that Mimiko only did the grandiose project on Oba Adesida road and nowhere else in the state capital not to talk of other major towns like Ikare, Owo, Okitipupa and Ore. He ought to have taken a cue from neighbouring Ekiti and Osun states where construction work is going on in other local governments in the states.

The Mega school project of Mimiko is a colossal waste of money as a general renovation of schools as recently done in neighbouring Ekiti State would have been more cost effective and result oriented. He embarked on a dome project of N2.9 billion which is now abandoned. On health, his N4 billion Kaadi Igbeayo project has been abandoned. Agagu claimed he left a sum of N38 billion naira in the treasury but Mimiko claimed he met a debt of N117 billion. He was alleged to have thrown the state into huge indebtedness to the tune of about N100 billion naira by borrowing and yet he has received in three and a half years about 300 billion from the federation account. He owes many contractors without any hope of paying back if he does not secure a second term. The Sunshine Liberation Movement has exposed many shady deals of the Mimiko administration and they have provided documents to back this up which the government has not been able to debunk till date. The sharp practices include contract inflation, over invoicing and frivolous awards of non-existing contracts to family members and cronies.

What observers regard as the greatest undoing of Mimiko is his treacherous nature. He was alleged to have betrayed Ajasin, Adefarati, Agagu, Obasanjo and Tinubu. He had a pact with Tinubu who bankrolled his bid to reclaim his mandate with the understanding that he would join ACN thereafter but reneged on the agreement and even castigated Tinubu his benefactor. Mimiko could not be trusted. He once shocked a colleague governor from a neighbouring state when he sponsored hoodlums to disrupt the venue of a lecture for late Adefarati after he has assured his colleague that there would be no problem.

Another problem confronting Mimiko is that he is in the midst of performing governors in the South-west from Lagos to Edo State. Like a bad dream, his popularity has drastically waned in the last one month when Ondo State people started comparing the state which earns an average of N6 billion from the federation account monthly as an oil producing state to Ekiti, a non-oil producing state with just N2.5 billion. The level of work in Ekiti’s 16 local government areas is stupendous and this made Mimiko’s supposed achievement juxtaposed with the resources available to him pale into insignificance.

Governor Raji Fashola recently took him to the cleaners when he gingered Ondo State people to wake up from their slumber and chase Mimiko out. He said it is shameful that Ondo had not fared better than when Mimiko took over more than three years ago despite the resources available to him. As if Ondo people have been waiting for Governor Fashola to show them the way, they turned the table against Mimiko. The first sign that Mimiko is no longer the candidate to beat was the Ikare rally that was well attended to the chagrin of Mimiko. The crowd at Ore rally of the ACN was more than that of Ikare. Ondo rally of the ACN was an embarrassment to Mimiko who hails from the town. It was a mammoth crowd. From that moment, it was clear that Mimiko is in trouble.

In Akure last week, 400 members of his Labour Party defected to the ACN saying Mimiko would lose the election this Saturday. We all know huge crowds at rallies don’t win elections but for ACN to record such a huge crowd, the signs are bad for the government of the day. Ondo State people also wanted to be part of development in the rest of the South-west states and would not want to be left out in the impending greater benefits that would come with the regional integration of the region which Mimiko has shunned.

The analysis of the election proper is also a cause of worry for Mimiko and his genuine supporters. In Ondo Central which has the largest number of voters and where Mimiko has the strongest support base, he is not sure of total victory except in Ondo town. Akure, Ile-Oluji and Iju Ita Ogbolu is likely to be won by the ACN. Ondo South comprising of Ore, Odigbo, the riverine areas of Ilaje, Ikale and the Mahin and Arogbo clans is for former Governor Agagu and by extension, the PDP but the ACN will have a good showing having made in-roads into the area recently.

Ondo North comprising of Akoko and Owo is Akeredolu’s base and he is sure of victory. Mimiko is in for a shocker as most of his trusted aides and friends are working for the opposition and are still the men he relies on to deliver votes for him on October 20. It is so for Mimiko because of his politics of exclusion. He does not trust his aides and his aides don’t trust him but are only waiting to collect whatever he has to offer before bolting. The Mimiko ship is already leaking and it is a matter of time before it sinks. Only the Nigerian factor can ensure victory for Mimiko on Saturday given the fact that it is near impossible for him to win in a free and fair election. With this scenario, the question comes up again, can Mimiko win?

    • Ibraheem writes from Ore.

  • PDP denies supporting Mimiko

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has denied that the party is canvassing support for the Labour Party candidate in Saturday’s poll, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

He said Mimiko is not a member of the party, wondering why PDP would ask people to vote for its opponent.

The PDP chieftain spoke at the weekend during a rally organised by the party in Akure for its standard bearer, Olusola Oke. President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice- President Namadi Sambo, Senate President David Mark and other PDP bigwigs were also at the event.

Tukur said: “Mimiko is not in PDP. We have our candidate in the person of Olusola Oke, a lawyer who is qualified to govern Ondo State. Our desire, as President Jonathan said, is to have Ondo State back in our fold. Oke is well-experienced in terms of governance, having been a member of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and a national legal adviser of the party.

“The high-powered delegation of the party that came to Ondo State, led by Mr. President, Vice-President, Senate President and my humble self is an indication that PDP is behind this tall, handsome man called Oke. We use this opportunity to dispel the rumour that PDP is backing Governor Mimiko.”

He warned members involved in anti-party activities to desist from the act, saying PDP would deal with anybody culpable of the offence.

President Jonathan urged Ondo indigenes to vote out Mimiko, saying the Labour Party should not be given a second term ticket.

He said PDP was ready to transform the state.

“Ondo State is endowed with human and natural resources. What is on ground is not commensurate with her potentials,” the President said.

While canvassing support for the PDP candidate, Jonathan warned political parties not to engage in hooliganism. He urged parents to warn their children not to be used as thugs by the parties.

  • Mimiko budgets N10b to buy votes, PDP alleges

THE Director-General of the Olusola Oke Campaign Organisation (OOCO), Dr. Dare Bada, yesterday alleged that Governor Olusegun Mimiko has set aside N10 billion to buy votes from the electorate during Saturday’s poll.

But Bada insisted that the PDP candidate, Olusola Oke, would defeat Mimiko in the election.

He said the PDP standard bearer would defeat Mimiko because he has not performed.

Bada said the party relies on the people who in the last two months have expressed their willingness to vote for the PDP candidate in the October 20 poll.
