  • Why Mimiko must rule Ondo again

The Ondo State Commissioner for Works, Mr. Gboye Adegbenro yesterday said the present Labour Party [LP] administration has impacted positively on the citizenry.

He said Mimiko’s government has touched every sector of human endeavour, including health, education, agriculture, sports development, infrastructure and others.

The commissioner said political sentiments apart, Mimiko’scontribution to the rapid development of the state is unprecedented, stressing that his legacy would remain indelible in the history of the state.

Adegbenro spoke to reporters during the campaign rally held in various communities of Ifedore local government, including Ilara-Mokin, Ijare, Igbara-Oke and others The commissioner also said, “For us in Ilara-Mokin, we will ever be grateful to Governor Mimiko, he gave us a befitting public service Training Institute and appointed two of us as commissioners in Ifedore local government.

  • Stakeholders worry over electoral violence in Ondo

Stakeholders worry over electoral violence in Ondo

Political leaders in Ondo State are worried over the spate of violence that has characterised the governorship campaigns in the state.

They want the security agencies to rise to the occasion. Traditional rulers and community leaders have also been suing for peace, urging rival partisan politicians to desist from heating up the state ahead of the October 20 election.

Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) leader in Akure, the state capital, Chief Wumi Adegbonmire, attributed the violence to the desperation of the Labour Party (LP) Governor Olusegun Mimiko to remain in office beyond this year. He complained that thugs have been invading the ACN meeting venues to instill fear into the people. The foremost politician warned that the trick would fail because people were seriously pushing for power shift.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer, Olusola Oke, a lawyer, has also complained that suspected LP thugs have been disrupting campaigns. But he urged calm, saying that the will of the people will prevail.

The Director of Mimiko Campaign Organisation, Mr. Kola Olabisi, denied the allegations. He said PDP and ACN were giving the dog a bad name to hang it. “LP is a peaceful party. Ondo State was peaceful before some people invaded the state to disturb its peace. Our campaign in the Labour Party is peaceful”, he said.

ACN spokesman Gboyega Adedipe said Olabisi was pretending. He alleged that Governor Mimiko, who is seeking re-election, has been waging war against the opposition. He recalled that violence started on April 20, 2012, when the ACN organized a memorial lecture for former Governor Adebayo Adefarati at Oyemeku Road, Akure. Adedipe said LP members stormed the venue, singing and dancing provocatively to abusive songs against the opposition party.

“As the guests, mostly ACN members, began to arrive, the situation became rowdy as their supporters also stationed themselves outside the hall singing and dancing. The situation, however, turned violent when some invitees to the lecture, including former commissioners and special advisers who served under the late governor were prevented from entering the lecture hall by Labour Party members”, he lamented.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and police took the pre-emptive action by banning political gatherings. But it is always difficult to enforce ban on political activities in a volatile state.

On Saturday, July 28, the convoy of the ACN candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu, was attacked in Akure by thugs. The party blamed LP for the attack, which was denied by its Publicity Secretary, Kole Odogiyan. The media aide to Akeredolu, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, alleged that hoodlums hauled stones and pebbles at the convoy.

A day before this attack, there was a clash between PDP and LP members at Ode-Irele. According to the PDP Director of Publicity, Mr. Ayodele Fadake, the clash was sparked off by government’s decision to inaugurate a community-based project on the same day that the PDP had obtained a Police permit to hold a rally in the town. “Some LP members planned to defect to the PDP and this sent the ruling party leaders jittery”, he said.

Ajanaku said Mimiko resorted to violence because he has no concrete achievement. “This is a governor who has sought to convince the world that he has performed in all spheres, but the evidence cannot be found”, he said. Olabisi rejected this claim, saying that the governor has done much for the state, adding that people would reward him with votes next month.

Ajanaku said gone were the days when non-performers would continue to be in public office in the Southwest. “Can we perform Mimiko to Fashola in lagos, Adams Oshiohmole in Edo? The handwriting is bold on the wall”, he added.

Election observers warn that violence may discredit the poll in Ondo, if stakeholders fail to avert the scenario. “Politicians should engage the people with their manifesto and plans, instead of resorting to violence during electioneering,” said Tunde Imolehin, an activist, who added: ”Violence is an ill-wind that blows nobody no good.”

Adegbonmire said an atmosphere of peace is critical to peaceful elections. “ACN is ready and we will not be intimidated. we want security agents and INEC to do a thorough job without fear or favour”, he added.

Last month, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, warned thugs to leave the state. He warned the members of the road transport unions, who are always tools in the hands of politicians, to shun violence. “I am coming to supervise the election in Ondo myself. So, the unions should stay away from trouble”, he said.

Resident Electoral Officer Akin Orebiyi, who spoke on phone, also assured the partied of a level playing field. “We will work with security agents to ensure an atmosphere of peace and transquility during the election”, he assured.

  • Lawyer: Mimiko on journey to nowhere

Lawyer: Mimiko on journey to nowhere

A London-based lawyer and chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Nathaniel Adojutelegan, yesterday said Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s second term ambition is a journey to nowhere.

The lawyer denied the rumour of his alleged romance with the ruling Labour Party (LP).

He said Mimiko would fail in the October 20 election.

Adojutelegan, who is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales, hails from Arigidi-Akoko, in Akoko North West.

The ACN chieftain said the rumour of his defection plan to the LP came from Mimiko, following his refusal to heed the governor’s plea to defect to the ruling party.

He said the governor, on September 11, sent a delegation, led by Deputy Governor Ali Olanusi and a monarch, from Akoko to meet with him in London onhis planned defection to LP.

The ACN chieftain said despite the pressure on him by the deputy governor, he refused to join the LP.

Adojutelegan said: “I told the state government delegation that I am a committed member of ACN and that only death can make me part with the progressive party.

“I am a committed member of ACN and only death can separate me from the party. I belong to the progressives and I believe so much in the programmes and leadership of the party.

“I have told Governor Mimiko’s emissaries that they should steer clear from me. I have told them the kind of person and politician I am. I am using this medium again to warn them to stop spreading rumours that may dent my reputation.”

The lawyer urged ACN members to remain committed and avoid jeopardising the interest of the party.

Suspected LP thugs attack ACN members in Ondo community

The weekly constituency meeting of Action Congress of the Nigeria (ACN) in Akoko Southwest Constituency 1 in Ondo State was yesterday disrupted by suspected Labour Party (LP) hoodlums.

The meeting, which held at Ward 7 in Iwaro, was reportedly halted when the thugs struck. The suspected thugs were said to have been led by a top government functionary from the local government. During the attack, the home of ACN State Assistant Treasurer, where the party leaders were being hosted, after the meeting, was vandalised and his shop destroyed.

Guns and other weapons were said to have been used to disperse ACN members. The Nation learnt that five ACN members, who were injured, are in critical condition at hospitals. Among them are the party’s Local Government Youth Leader and a chairmanship aspirant, Mr Dele Balogun (aka Best Time). His ribs were reportedly broken. So also was Gbenga Omole.

It was learnt that the incident was reported at the Oka Police Station. There had been a series of attacks on ACN members in the state by suspected LP thugs. The Akeredolu Campaign Organisation (ACO) of the Ondo ACN yesterday alerted the public and security agents to alleged acts of terror the ruling Labour Party (LP) has unleashed on the opposition, especially the ACN and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement in Akure, the state capital, its spokesman, Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, said yesterday’s attack on ACN members was at the party’s weekly constituency meeting in Iwaro Ward 7 in Akoko Southwest.
The attack was allegedly supervised by a top official of the LP.
Both officials are said to hail from Akoko. The attack was allegedly led by a notorious LP thug in the area.
The home of ACN Assistant Treasurer, where the meeting was held by the leaders and members, was vandalised, and the Treasurer’s shop destroyed. The statement said the Youth Leader in Akoko Southwest was injured and property worth thousands of naira belonging to Murphy Adamolekun, who was said to be the main target of the attack, was destroyed.
    It added:

“Guns, machetes and other weapons were freely used by the LP thugs to chase away the defenceless ACN members. Various degrees of injury were sustained by our teeming members who were holding a legitimate peaceful meeting. Many of them are in critical condition in various hospitals in the area. Dele Balogun, a chairmanship aspirant, had broken ribs.

“It is also a notorious fact that the LP thugs have also been unleashing a high level of fury on members of the PDP. Recently, the LP thugs attacked PDP members during their ward congresses. “ACO is using this opportunity to appeal to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to be alive to their responsibilities of protecting the residents, irrespective of their political ideology.

“ACN is a peaceful political party. The parry won elections in all the states in the Southwest, including Edo, without violence. We intend to repeat such in Ondo State. But security agents must protect the people to avoid self-help, which could lead to chaos and the breakdown of law and order.”

  • Oke promises to complete abandoned projects

Oke promises to complete abandoned projects

the Ondo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Chief Olusola Oke, yesterday promised to complete major projects the past administration of the party started but were abandoned by the ruling Labour Party (LP) administration, if elected in the October 20 election.

The former Legal Adviser of the party said such projects include the Olokola Free Trade Zone, a deep seaport in the coastal area, an industrial park, sericulture and apiary farms, Adagbakuja town, Akure Modern Stadium and the reticulation of Owena Dam.

Oke explained that because the projects would solve unemployment challenges, it has becomes necessary for any government that desires the well-being of the people to complete them.

  • Youths back ACN candidate

    Youths back ACN candidate

Scores of Akoko youths, under the aegis of Akoko Youth Alliance (AYA), at Ikare Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko North East Local Government Area, have backed the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) governorship candidate, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

The youths were from the four local government areas in Akoko Division.
They unanimously promised to support Akeredolu with legitimate means to win next month’s election.
AYA Coordinator, Mr Banji Adewunmi, berated the ruling Labour Party (LP) administration for not providing jobs for youths.

He challenged Governor Olusegun Mimiko to announce the number of graduates he has employed in the last three and a half years.

Adewunmi said: “We are supporting Akeredolu because the youths will be the first major beneficiaries of an ACN administration. This is because we have keyed into his promise of providing 30,000 jobs in his first 100 days in office. We believe him and we know he will deliver on his promise because he is a man of integrity.”

The group’s Secretary, Mr Aleriwa Shina, said the Ondo North rally is held every fortnight.
The Deputy Director-General (North) of Akeredolu Campaign Organisation (ACO), Mr Stephen Olemija, hailed the youths for supporting ACN and its candidate.

He urged them not to deviate from the goal they have set, adding that they should ensure Akeredolu’s victory in the October 20 poll. The wife of the ACN standard bearer, Mrs Joy Akeredolu, attended the event.
The rally became a carnival of sort when campaign souvenirs, including branded T-shirt, fez caps, key holders and others were inaugurated.

Others at the event were ACN Northern Senatorial Chairman, Chief Idris Elemeje; the state’s Organising Secretary, Rahman Daudu; ACN Chairman in Akoko North-East, Deacon Ishola Moshood; Mr Omole Gbenga and Alhaji Bakare, who represented the former ACN governorship aspirant, Chief Segun Abraham.

  • Akeredolu urges Mimiko to allow ACN to transform Ondo

Akeredolu urges Mimiko to allow ACN to transform Ondo

Ondo State Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) governorship candidate, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), yesterday said it is time for the ruling Labour Party (LP) to vacate office for the progressive party to transform the state for the benefit of its poverty-stricken residents.

Akeredolu said the Sunshine State must join its counterparts in the Southwest to pursue the regional integration agenda to transform the region.

Addressing reporters in Akure, the state capital, the former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President said Mimiko and the LP were indifferent to the progressives’ vision.

He said: “As a progressive, I believe in regional integration. Anyone who is against it is selfish. We have always set the pace for others to follow. The late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, did it for the defunct Western Region and we are re-enacting it now.

“Other states in the Southwest need Ondo to provide gas, which will assist us in generating light. The Yoruba can find themselves in different political parties, but the issue of Regional Integration is non-negotiable. Any bona fide Yoruba man should support the idea.

“I am a professional in politics and not a professional politician. I am not like Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who is a medical doctor but abandoned the profession for politics. His clinic is already taken over by bush. Go to Ibadan, the Oyo State capital; my chamber is alive there. I have reached the peak of my profession as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

“I have a sound pedigree; I had a stint in Ondo State as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice. I handled many celebrated cases before I was elected the President of the prestigious NBA. Mimiko has not practised as a medical doctor for a day.”

The ACN standard bearer said regionalism is an impetus for growth and development, adding that the era of western, northern, and eastern regions brought remarkable feat to Nigeria.

On mega schools, Akeredolu said: “You don’t need N650million to establish a single school, when the same amount could build hundreds across the state, like it was done during the Olusegun Agagu administration.”

He decried Mimiko’s neglect of the rural communities.

The ACN candidate promised to improve infrastructure, particularly access roads in the rural areas, if he becomes governor, “while all abandoned road projects will be completed”.

Akeredolu listed ACN programmes, which he called AKETI, the acronym for Agriculture, Knowledge, Education, Technology and Infrastructure.

He said: “I will bring positive changes to the people of the state, if I’m elected, by identifying various potentials without hindrances.

“It is time for service. Ondo residents are yearning for development, which should not be a lip service.

“I am propelled to serve the state and its people, who are being short changed through Mimiko’s cosmetic governance.”

He noted that the present administration has received over N650 billion since its inception but nothing tangible to show for it except market stalls, bus stations and water fountain.

The frontline lawyer urged the electorate to vote for him and ACN in the October 20 election.

  • Lawyer urges Supreme Court to stop Mimiko from increasing court fees

Lawyer urges Supreme Court to stop Mimiko from increasing court fees

AN Akure lawyer, Titiloye Charles, has filed an application before the Supreme Court to stop Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko and the Chief Judge (CJ) of the state, Justice Sehinde Kumuyi, from further increasing court fees, pending the determination of the appeal before the apex court.

Titiloye averred that on February 9, last year, the governor increased the court fees through a circular letter written by the Chief Registrar of Ondo State.

He said despite the fact that the case was still pending before the Supreme Court, the governor and the CJ were attempting to again increase the fees under the guise of revenue generation.

Titiloye noted that the commercial affidavit, which the governor imposed on the Judiciary, is unknown to any law in Nigeria or legal practice in any state in the country.

The lawyer prayed the Supreme Court to order an accelerated hearing of the matter and intervene to prevent the litigation from becoming unaffordable to the indigent clients who daily approach his law office for help.

The appeal in the substantive suit bothers on the constitutionality of increment of court fees in Ondo State Judiciary by Mimiko, the head of the executive arm of government in the state.

As at press time, Mimiko and CJ had been served with the application.

But no date has been fixed for hearing in the matter.

  • Akeredolu to Mimiko: your achievements cosmetic

Akeredolu to Mimiko: your achievements cosmetic

The Akeredolu Campaign Organisation (ACO) of the Ondo State Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) yesterday dismissed Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s achievements in the last three and a half yearsas cosmetic.

It described as untrue the governor’s claim that the state’s tertiary institutions paid the least tuition fees in the Southwest and that its workers earned N22,000 minimum wage.

In a statement in Akure, the state capital, Akeredolu said: “For us at ACO, this is another cheap propaganda by the drowning Labour Party (LP) to hoodwink Ondo State to vote for its candidate.

“When ACN governors reclaimed their mandates in Ekiti, Osun and later won in Ogun and Oyo states from the reactionary Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), what they did was to slash the high tuition fees imposed on the students.

“For instance, Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi slashed tuition fees by 75 per cent, irrespective of the course being pursued by the students. This has been applauded across the state. It is equally on record that Governor Rauf Aregbesola did the same in Osun State when he assumed office, apart from the massive infrastructures provided in the institutions. Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) has promised not to increase tuition fees in Ondo State-owned tertiary institutions.

“Besides, it is a notorious fact that while Mimiko was locked up in a battle of wit with Ondo State workers, the governors of ACN-controlled states had started paying minimum wage. It is, therefore, curious that a government that failed to pay N14,000 relativity salary could wake up to pay N22,000 minimum wage.

“It is on record, based on the pay slips of workers in Ondo State, that after deducting taxes, an average worker goes home with less than N14,000. Therefore, where is the payment of the so-called N22,000 minimum wage?

“It will also be interesting to note that the Mimiko administration has shortchanged teachers when he cleverly claimed that he had paid them the 27 per cent increment agreed with them, whereas he only paid two per cent of it.

“How could Mimiko claim that his education sector is the best in the Southwest, with the collapse of primary and secondary schools, as a result of the poor condition of the structures of these schools?

“Mimiko’s government is yet to employ a single teacher in the last three and a half years. Infrastructure at the Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU), the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic in Owo (ROGIPO), among others, are begging for attention while the workers of both institutions have been protesting non-payment of their salaries and allowances in the last 28 months.

“Mimiko claimed that ACN asked for his blueprint. Which one is he talking about? Is it the abandonment of N1.5 billion Doom-dome? Is it the inability to construct a single road, among others?

“Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) of Lagos State has been transforming the state, continuing where Asiwaju Bola Tinubu stopped. Even before he reclaimed his mandate, Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole was on the same path. Where did Mimiko develop the so-called blueprint that ACN governors are asking for?”

  • Mimiko hails Awolowo

    Mimiko hails Awolowo

Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko at the weekend hailed the late Premier of the defunct Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, for the “unprecedented development” to the region.

The governor said the late sage accomplished this through “innovative projects”. He urged up-and-coming politicians to emulate him so that they too could be remembered by future generations.  Mimiko spoke in Idanre, the headquarters of Idanre Local Government Area, during his re-election campaign tour of the local government.

The governor said in the last three and a half years, his administration had been developing Ondo State.  He listed some of the projects to include the health care system, urban development and human settlement, education as well as agriculture, among others.

Mimiko hailed the late Awolowo for his visionary and life-changing projects which he said made the defunct Western Region the best administrated region and the most advanced in the fledging nation. The governor noted that the legacy he left behind should remain a challenge for up-and-coming politicians who must always think of what legacy they would leave behind for posterity.

Mimiko made this observation at the Onisere-Ofosu Farm Settlement, a border community with Edo State, while commissioning a block of six classrooms at St. Peter’s Primary School in the community. He blamed past governments in the state for the neglect suffered by the community since it was founded in 1959 by the late Awolowo.

While commending the vision of late Premier of the Region for setting up the Farm Settlement for the promotion of farming and boosting of food production, the Governor, however regretted that past administrations in the state would have improved on the lives of the people if developmental projects had been executed in the community.

The Governor however assured that his administration decided to construct the classrooms to replace the over fifty years old dilapidated school accommodating over 250 pupils who used to sit on the floor to receive lessons.

According to the Governor who was welcome to the community with joy, the challenges of his administration was how to improve on the lives of the people adding that no fewer than six hundred communities all over the state have benefited from the transformational and developmental projects of his administration in the last three and a half years.

He also promised to use his second term in office to consolidate on the achievements recorded by the Labour Party administration in the state, adding that his administration would re-develop the Farm Settlement to meet the vision of its founder late Chief Obafemi Awolowo by providing it with social infrastructure.

The construction of the school, he said, was part of the demonstration of the Labour Party led administration to revive education and create conducive learning environment for over two hundred and fifty pupils from the community who had hitherto been using the over 50 years old dilapidating building.

Mimiko also promised to construct a health centre in the community to take care of the people who travelled several kilometres for medical attention.

Addressing a rally at Ofosu, Governor Mimiko promised that the electricity project of the town would receive prompt attention during his second term in office, while other social infrastructure would also be provided to make life meaningful to the people.

He, therefore, solicited for the votes of the people which he said should be used to bring continuity for the developmental programme of the Labour Party in the state.

The Governor and his entourage had earlier visited Erindo-Ofosu where he gave the people of the community a cheque of N10million to complete communal project embarked upon by the people, one of which is a health centre with a warning that the money should not be misused. He also promised that he would equip the health centre, provide it with staff and drugs when completed.

Mimiko who visited Ala-Elefosan where he commissioned series of projects including a Secondary school building built by his government, Ala, Ala Goke, Aponmu Lona, Owena, Atosin, Alade and Ipinle-rere where he also commissioned a Primary School, reiterated the resolved of the people not to serve any godfathers.

He warned those boasting that they would capture the State by hook or crook of heavy trouncing on October 20. According to him Ondo people are free born who take exceptions to the slur that that somebody wants to capture them and are determined to make a resounding statement for freedom as opposed to neo-colonialism, democracy as against oligarchy and rule of an emperor.

He said: “We assure them that they would meet their waterloo in Ondo State on October 20 as our people are resolved to remain free, they have chosen democracy as against oligarchy and the rule of an emperor.

On October 20, it will be one man, one vote; never will be railroad and stampeded by aliens, those who were never part of us but are mercantile in their posturing and out to fleece our God-given wealth”.
