Afenifere hails DSS for checkmating Miyetti Allah’s vigilance group

Pan Yoruba socio-cultural and political organization, organisation, Afenifere, has commended the Department of State Security (DSS) for checkmating Miyetti Allah Hore plan to set up a 1,144-strong Nomad Vigilante militia in Nassarawa State.

It said the 1,144-strong Nomad Vigilante militia was ostensibly to provide security for Fulani herders.

Afenifere stated that Miyetti Allah, being a non-state actor, lacked powers to create such group.

This was contained in a communique issued at the end of Afenifere General meeting held at the residence of its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

It said the action of the DSS to checkmate Miyetti Allah was timely and in order.

Afenifere, in the communique, urged President Bola Tinubu to set the machinery in motion for the purpose of restructuring the country.

It expressed optimism that President Tinubu, being a democrat, would not hesitate to do things that would quicken the country’s quest for true federalism in which people would have self-determination within the context of one nation that is genuinely democratic and federal.

It said the Ibadan blast underscored the need to allow the federating units in the country to control mineral resources in their respective areas with particular reference to mining and exploration.

The group said President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda would make life easier for Nigerians by strengthening the value of the Naira, reduce costs of energy as well as regular supply of electricity.

According to the communique, “In view of the current high cost of living, Afenifere urged the Federal Government, through its various organs in charge of finance and fiscal policies, to accelerate actions that will strengthen the value of our currency, enhance productivity, reduce costs of items and services all geared towards reducing inflation and enhancing the welfare of the people.

“The meeting renewed its call on governments in Yoruba speaking states to further encourage the teaching and usage of Yoruba language in schools.”

Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, a Fulani socio-cultural association has inaugurated security outfits in Nasarawa state to work in synergy with security agencies at the grassroots level to tackle incessant security challenges confronting the state, especially kidnapping and terrorism.

He said that the primary objective of the Nomad vigilante Group is to help secure the livelihoods of farmers and herders, aid in information gathering and intelligence to the Nigerian security agencies of criminals and criminal activities within the local communities as well as encourage peace in rural communities.

He said: “We wish to assure all concerned that the Nomad vigilante group volunteers were carefully selected, screened, profiled and will operate within the arm bit of the law. It is not created to replace or undermine the efforts of our existing security agencies but rather to purely complement their work for the greater good of our country.

“The sole purpose of creating this outfit is to ensure peace, and harmony and to assist in addressing the serious levels of insecurity that have plagued our great nation which we condemned in totality

He stated: “This will emerge as a formidable force dedicated to establishing a sense of security that transcends the mere absence of conflict; rather about cultivating an environment where the vibrancy of our communities can flourish, and our people can pursue their livelihoods without fear or hindrance”

“As we navigate the complex terrain of security challenges, we confront head-on the menace of cattle rustling and banditry that has plagued our rural landscape, the Nomad vigilante group will serve as a proactive stance against these threats by facilitating our economic prosperity, shielding our farmers and herders and other communities in Nigeria from the shadows of insecurity.”

The police commissioner in the state, represented by the Assistant Commissioner Operations, Abdulaziz Aliyu, said they will operate with the group within the ambit of the law.

Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore Fulani socio-cultural association said it has resolved to establish nationwide vigilante to assist security agencies in curbing kidnapping and other crimes.

The association also called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take pro-active measures to protect Fulani pastoralists across the country from tribal hordes, ethnic militias and state sponsored vigilantes.

Miyetti Allah said this in a communiqué issued at the end of their Annual General Meeting, AGM, and conference held yesterday in Nasarawa State.

The communiqué, which was signed by the group’s National President, Abdullahi Badejo, National Secretary, Saleh Alhassan and the National deputy President, Mansur Abdulkarim, said delegates unanimously endorsed the establishment of Miyetti Allah Vigilante Nationwide to assist security agencies in curbing criminalities such as cattle rustling, kidnapping and rural banditry…

“Delegates view the continuous policies of segregation by some state governors seeking to criminalise the economic livelihoods of pastoralists through the enactment of obnoxious laws – ‘Anti-open Grazing Law’ as the most wicked act any government can do to the economic interest of Fulani pastoralists and unanimously condemned and totally reject the repressive and oppressive laws and called on the National Assembly to come to the rescue of the pastoralists.

“That the Inspector General Police to take pro-active measures to protect Fulani pastoralists across the country from tribal hordes, ethnic militias and states sponsored vigilantes.

“Delegates call for the setting up of a National Truth and Reconciliation Commission to begin the process of total reconciliation and national healing in our rural communities

“Security agencies should commence the process of detailed documentation of the violence against pastoralists including the collection of exhibits and all relevant information to isolate the perpetrators of the violence, arrest and prosecute them to ensure justice

“Delegates condemn in totality all forms of violence, and support the peace loving people to embrace the spirit of brotherhood, peaceful and harmonious coexistence in our communities.

“Delegates expressed appreciation to the Executive Governor of Niger, Mohammed Baga for the creation of Ministry of Nomadic Affairs and called on other governors to emulate the positive gesture.

“Delegates totally condemn the continuous profiling of the Fulani race by some media organisations particularly the social media and urge the press to investigate the veracity of their stories before going to press or risk legal action.

“Delegates frown at the continuous extra-judicial killing of Fulani pastoralists by security agencies in the country and call on the National Human Rights Commission to investigate these  atrocities and ensure justice is served,” it said.

  • Fulani herdsmen don’t carry arms but sticks, says Miyetti Allah

THE President of Fulani socio-cultural association, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bello Abdullahi Bodejo, has condemned the labelling of the Fulani herdsmen as criminals.

He alleged that the name-calling was being instigated by some politicians and enemies of the Fulani to blackmail the ethnic nationality and cause unnecessary confusion.

Bodejo, who spoke at the weekend in Bauchi, said all forms of criminal activities, such as kidnapping, armed robbery shown on social media, were designed to paint the Fulani in bad light.

The association president noted that the incessant farmers and herders clashes were politicised, saying the misunderstandings between the two groups were age-longed.

According to him, they have the traditional ways of resolving the issues.

He said: “You will see someone taking pictures from accident scenes and before you know, he would post them on social media, claiming Fulani herdsmen are responsible for the killings. It’s unfortunate.”

Bodejo said herders do not bear arms of any kind except the traditional sticks they have been known for.

On Ruga settlement, the Miyetti Allah leader faulted northern governments for “being insensitive” to the plight of Fulani herdsmen.

He said: “The Nigerian government has been insensitive to the plight of Fulani herdsmen across the country, despite contributing immensely to the nation’s economy through their business.

“Let the Federal Government bring back the grazing reserves across the country. We have national and international cattle routes across the country, which have been taken away by modern roads. These are the rights of Fulani as citizens. I agree that cattle-rearing is a personal business, but governments must look for ways of easing business for these herders.

“If government can disburse billions of naira as loans to petty traders, who do personal businesses across the country, then they (governments) should also look at what they can do to help Fulani herders in their cattle-rearing business. It is a business that government at all levels must support them to do at ease.”

  • Call your violent members to order, CAN tells Miyetti-Allah

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Thursday urged the leadership of the Miyetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) to call their members who are violent to order.

The President, CAN, Dr Samson Ayokunle, who made the call at a news conference in Abuja, said until they were called to order they cannot regain the trust and respect of Nigerians.

The cleric explained that nobody hates the Fulani until some Fulani began to act violently and killing innocent people.

CAN said that if there was any enemy from any Fulani man, the Fulani man created the enemy for himself, they have been living peacefully for many years in our various communities, till the killing issues started.

”In those days, our children married them, they married our children, but when they became too violent and started carrying AK47, killing people, what type of play is that? that’s a dangerous play.

”We can no longer think we are friends with that type of play it’s too dangerous, so let them call their people to order and ensure that they remove the enmity they have created around an average Fulani person,” he said.

He challenged their leaders to call out the violent ones among them to order, that is the only way people will respect them and people can trust them again.

Ayokunle also charged the government to step up its security system across the country with a view to stopping the unending killings.

He further said that the association had taken it stands in the alleged rape case against the founder of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), Pastor Abiodun Fatoyinbo.

He noted that the allegation no matter how bad it may be, remains an allegation until proven otherwise, that is until it is properly investigated and we have a truth to hold onto.

”We have told you without mincing words that we will never support immorality in whatever form, it is alien to the culture of the church, to the teachings of Christ.

”And there is no pulpit that I know in Nigeria that the members are taught immorality, but we will not condemn until we have reasons to condemn, let the panel come out with the result let’s know what the truth is.

”I told you in the press release we issued that we have given the right to Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), because we don’t deal with individual churches, we deal with blocs.

”We have directed PFN, an arm of a bloc, which is also large enough to investigate that matter. I am telling you under God that PFN has set up that panel and that panel had been given two weeks within which to submit its report,

”Not only that, the two individuals involved have been invited by the committee and we are assuring them that nothing will be covered,” he said.(NAN)

  • Soyinka, Ooni to Nigerians: defend your ancestral lands

NIGERIA cannot survive another civil war, Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka and frontline monarch Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, have warned.

They called on the authorities to arrest what they see as the prevailing drift into “a dysfunctional state on multiple levels of citizenship, community belonging, security and productive opportunities”.

In a communiqué they issued at the end of a meeting at the weekend, the duo counselled the government on ensuring co-existence amongst Nigerians.

The communique was issued after a visit by the royal father to Soyinka in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

They said that solutions must be found to the challenges threatening national cohesion and survival.

According to the literary icon and the royal father, efforts must be made to douse the tension over the suspended Ruga settlements. The government has suspended the project, saying the implementation was inconsistent with its plan.

The communique decried a situation where some groups consider themselves especially privileged and above the law.

It states: “We have in mind destructive forms of social transactions that characterize groups such as nomadic cattle herdsmen, and their umbrella groupings in the nature of Miyetti Allah.

“We confess ourselves increasingly distressed and appalled that the hitherto harmonious cohabitation, even routine collaboration, among the productive arms of society that Nigerians have taken for granted even from pre-colonial times, have deteriorated to unprecedented levels of barbarity, contempt for human lives and a defiant trampling on the civic entitlements of other productive vectors, such as farmers, the providers of both food and cash crops.

“This abhorrent, yet consistent pattern of sectarian, and homicidal arrogance is obviously not merely counter-productive but inhuman, criminal and divisive.”

Soyinka and Oba Ogunwusi said the recent ultimatum delivered by a sectarian order to President Muhammadu Buhari to set up the so-called Ruga cattle settlements across the entire nation within a stipulated time, despite national outcry, should be acknowledged as their entitlement under the law that grants them freedom of expression.

Given the current state of affairs, the eminent citizens called on Nigerians across the states to defend the sanctity of their ancestral lands, because such birthright has never been annulled, “not even under colonial occupation”.

They said those who indulge in what they described as “internal colonisation project are backward, primitive and underdeveloped minds that have failed to overcome delusions in the antiquated belief in sectarian dominion as the key to social existence”.

Soyinka and Oba Ogunwusi urged Nigerians to convoke a series of frank encounters, across various interests and concerns, to debate and determine the future structure of their nation, most especially with a view to attaining a genuine, decentralised functional governance arrangement.

They added: “We propose a structure that enables the constitutive parts to progress at their own pace, determine their own priorities, and encourage creative exploitation of their resources for the benefit of their peoples.  Such encounters will simultaneously address the numerous anomalies that plague the nation – from youth unemployment, infrastructural decay, insecurity and ethical collapse, to the untenable aspects of the protocols of the present constitution that supposedly bond the nation as one.

“We consider it a primary imperative of nation existence that the constitutive parts of the nation take steps to preserve and enhance their distinct cultural identities, including tested and relevant pre-colonial values, their spiritual apprehension of phenomena and worship, all without detriment to the principles and ideals of mutual co-existence.

“To this end, we undertake to create state-of-the-art Ethnic Museums for our people both at home and in the Diaspora, where present and future generations can access their histories and cultures vividly, as living expressions of their very humanity, not simply as relics of eras vanished forever or irrelevant to the present.

“We pledge ourselves to join hands with others in fashioning a realistic, functional, and sustainable charter of development for the welfare and progress of our peoples, culturally, economically, and spiritually, where every individual freely obtains access to the means of his or her chosen path of development, and the fulfilling knowledge of valuable contribution to the well-being and advance of the overall community, and of humanity.”

  • Ruga: Our deal with herdsmen, by South East Govs

As reactions continue to trail the federal government’s proposal for establishment of Ruga settlements in some states, the South East Governors Forum has disclosed its proposed deal with the members of the Miyetti Allah as panecea to achieving lasting peace among farmers and herdsmen.

Chairman of the South East Governors Forum and Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi, said though there is no plan for any Ruga settlement in any part of South East and South South, the zones can make a very good business with sale of grasses to the herdsmen in exchange for meat.

Umahi, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Uzor, said there will be no part of the South East that will be given out for establishment of Ruga.

He noted the zone is purely agrarian with limited landmass for farming and therefore cannot accommodate Ruga.

Umahi, according to the statement, said the zone actually proposed a deal with MACBAN to take their cattle to the Northern parts where grazing reserve was established long time ago and rely completely on the grasses grown in the South for feeding of their cattle.

Umahi, who was chairman Technical Committee on Farmers and Herdsmen clash carved from the federal Economic Council under the chairmanship of the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo made a recommendation for revamping of the already existing grazing reserve in various parts of the North to enable farmers have unhindered access to their farmlands while herdsmen rely solely on proceeds from the farmers.

Explaining how the deal will work, the governor said: “The way it works is that the herdsmen will bring down their cows to the South East and sell us as meat while they will load the grasses which are grown here in the same trailer with which they transported their cows to feed their cattle in those grazing reserve which should be made comfortable for them.“

The statement also quoted Umahi as saying that with this proposed deal, herdsmen are expected to embrace anti- open grazing by returning to the ranches in the north and do their business on the trade- by- barter basis of selling cows to the south and buying grass to feed their cows in the north.

  • Miyetti Allah and security in Southeast

SIR: Security is everybody’s business. No individual, group, institution or organisation is nugatory in matters of security.  All efforts are needed and all hands must be forged into one fist in the pursuit of peace. In fact, it imperils security if any stakeholder to the peace is “quarantined” and stereotyped.

Wednesday last week, I read a report on a security briefing by Audu Adamu Madaki, commissioner of police in Adamawa State. He revealed, essentially, the importance of working with critical stakeholders in retarding criminality. Madaki said three kidnappers, who surrendered their arms and divulged crucial information on the artifices and operations of their criminal genre, were led to his office by an official of Miyetti Allah (a show of resolve in helping to curb the menace).

Hear him: “Yesterday, we harvested three repentant kidnappers who voluntarily walked into my office, confessed to have been kidnappers; but have now repented and surrendered two AK-47s to the command.

“The herdsmen explained to me that they normally concealed the firearms in sacks of personal effects and strap them on the back of a cow and then immigrate to a chosen destination.

“They told me that they purchased them from the Republic of Cameroon and moved them into Nigeria through the bush path to beat immigration and other security agents along the border.”

I believe, there will be more gains in the effort to wrestle down banditry and kidnapping if the people, who can prevail on or sway these outlaws, are involved in the “sumo.” It is the reason I am strained by the sectional condemnation of the request by Miyetti Allah to help in fending off the brigands from the Southeast.

At the Southeast Security Summit in Enugu on Thursday, Alhaji Bala Usman Ngelzerma, national secretary of Miyetti Allah, said the association was willing to help in strengthening the security architecture of the region through its vigilantes.

Read Also: Ripples over Miyetti Allah’s offer to raise vigilance outfit in S’East

He said: “The Fulani Youth Vigilante body will be working with the security, the neighbourhood watch or vigilante to ensure security in all communities, as it was done in Enugu State.

“We will solicit for your support and cooperation in adopting dialogue where problems exist as a means of brokering peace and to report cases against our members to either the Fulani Youth Vigilante Group, state or local branch of the association.”

Ordinarily, I see no distress in this imploration. To me, the hue and cry over Miyetti Allah’s entreaty are emotionally charged and sentimentally invoked. It should be considered as a gesture of good faith because it is commonsensical to fight criminality of this ilk with those girded with information and knowledge about the culprits.

On the one hand, there is an outrage over killings by strayed herdsmen in some parts of the Southeast, and on the other hand, there is uproar over the entreaty by the monolithic association for herdsmen to help in checking this scourge. So, where do we go from here?

Although, I understand the concerns of those remonstrating, but is it not sagacious to involve some members of Miyetti Allah in the vigilante groups securing the southeast? I think the pickle is assuming that an entire group is a culprit in the crimes of a few.  This is the corollary of stereotyping and the concomitants of conspiracy theories of “Fulanisation and Islamisation”.

With the frightening level of insecurity across the country, no region should rebuff a gesture of help from any party of interest. The argument that the north is worse hit by insecurity, so, Miyetti Allah should centre its effort there is vacuous and irrational.  These people have been profiled because of the crimes of a few, and now they are taking the pedal in the purge of their own; yet stereotyped and rebuffed?

We must give no room for conspiracy theories – of domination, invasion or conquest. These are the by-product of distrust and fear. And instead of running wild with emotions, let us give space to rational thinking and disciplined conversations.
