Salah slams fan ‘disrespect’ to ex-Liverpool forwards Nunez, Diaz

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah called out a popular fan account on Wednesday for “disrespecting” former teammates Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez after a social media post mocked their close-season departures.

Salah took exception to a post on X featuring images of the departed duo in black-and-white over new signings Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak with the caption: “Name a bigger upgrade in footballing history.”

“How about we celebrate the great signings without disrespecting the PL (Premier League) champions?” Salah fired back on X, defending his fellow strikers who helped Liverpool claim their 20th league title.

The Anfield Edition site, which has more than half a million followers, quickly apologised.

“It wasn’t the intention to disrespect, more to highlight the incredible transfers this summer. But we’re sorry,” it posted with a picture of Salah on a throne.

The social media spat came after a summer of big-money moves that saw Colombian winger Diaz head to Bayern Munich for 75 million euros ($87.80 million), while Nunez joined Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal for a reported 53 million euros.

Liverpool then splashed the cash on replacements, signing Wirtz for 116 million pounds ($156.70 million) with add-ons before smashing the British transfer record to bring in Isak for 125 million pounds.

While Diaz made a significant contribution to Liverpool’s title triumph with 13 goals and seven assists from 36 games, Nunez struggled to make his mark, netting only five times in 30 games.

Though he remained popular at Anfield for his work rate, Nunez faced harsh mockery on social media for missed chances.

Last month, Salah also took to social media to criticise UEFA’s tribute to the late Suleiman Al-Obeid, known as the “Palestinian Pele,” after European soccer’s governing body failed to reference the circumstances surrounding his death.

“Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?” Salah wrote.

“I would say I never had a season like this and winning big trophies so I would say this is my best chance to get it right now while I’m in the club because it’s been a crazy year, a crazy season with a trophy,” Salah told Sky Sports. “It’s given me a good chance.”

Salah reveals magic  behind iconic Liverpool’s  celebration selfie

Mohamed Salah‘s selfie celebration during Liverpool’s Premier League title-clinching win over Tottenham Hotspur has become an iconic moment.

The Egyptian scored the Reds’ fourth goal in Sunday’s 5-1 victory at Anfield and, after celebrating his strike, borrowed a phone from a staff member before taking a photograph of himself and the cheering Liverpool fans behind him.

But some have asked could it have been a marketing idea, because the phone Salah used is made by one of Liverpool’s sponsors.

“At the beginning of the season I always take selfies with players [who score], so for this one I said ‘OK, I have to think of something special because it’s a picture that’s going to be there forever’,” Salah told BBC Sport.

Salah, 32, has frequently posted selfies with Reds team-mates on social media, while his recent two-year contract extension announcement included a self-taken photograph.

Initially observers thought Salah had taken the phone off a fan in the crowd, but it was a Liverpool staff member located behind the advertising hoardings in front of the Kop.

The photograph, which Salah and Liverpool posted on their social media accounts, has millions of likes and views.

But it has courted some controversy with observers wondering if it was a natural celebration, or an advert for Google Pixel, an official partner of the club.

Salah breaks EPL scoring  record as Liverpool edge West Ham

Liverpool resumed their march to a second Premier League title with a 2-1 victory over West Ham United as Mohamed Salah broke the record for most goal involvements in a season and Virgil Van Dijk scored a late winner.

After West Ham had scored an equaliser in the 86th  minute, skipper Van Dijk grabbed the winner with a header three minutes later in front of the Kop to put Liverpool two wins away from the title.

The result gave Liverpool a 13-point lead over second-placed Arsenal in the standings with six games left, while West Ham are 17th with 35 points, 14 points from the relegation zone.

Prior to kick-off, a minute’s silence was held at Anfield to honour the 97 victims of the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster. But the fans were in full voice soon after, chanting Salah’s name to celebrate his two-year contract extension.

Following a bright start for the home side, Salah duly delivered the cross for the first goal – a sublime pass with the outside of his boot that curled past the last defender and gave Luis Diaz a simple tap-in at the edge of the six-yard box.

The opener gave Salah the record for the most goal involvements in a 38-game Premier League season – 45 consisting of 27 goals and 18 assists.

West Ham came close to an equaliser three minutes later when Mohammed Kudus found Alisson off his line and attempted a lob but the Brazilian keeper scrambled backward and tipped the shot onto the crossbar to give Liverpool a reprieve.

Alexis Mac Allister nearly doubled their lead from a free kick two minutes after the restart but saw Alphonse Areola get a hand to it as the ball rattled the crossbar.

But as West Ham grew into the game, the Anfield crowd became restless while Salah also looked visibly disappointed when he was taken off as his mini goal drought extended to five games in all competitions.

A minute later, Liverpool gifted West Ham the equaliser when a breakdown in communication saw Andy Robertson score an own goal when he tried to deal with Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross.

But Liverpool restored their lead on a corner kick when Van Dijk’s towering header beat the keeper to spark wild celebrations at Anfield.

In-form Salah revels  in ‘best season’ with Liverpool

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah believes this season is his best-ever at Anfield as he continues to set the pace for goals and assists in the Premier League.

Salah’s goal and assist in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Manchester City saw him become the first player in Europe’s top five leagues to surpass 50 goal involvements, with 30 goals and 21 assists in all competitions so far this term.

The Egypt international’s impressive form has helped Liverpool open up an 11-point gap at the top of the Premier League table, as well as putting him in the frame to win this year’s Ballon d’Or.

“I think it’s my best season,” Salah told TNT Sports. “So far I think it’s my best season because I make the other players around me better — that’s what I feel.

“I know their games, all the numbers around all the players, it’s going to be higher than other seasons, plus my assists is higher which means I help them a lot. If you look in that direction, Cody [Gakpo], Lucho [Diaz], other players, their season is better than others and I think that’s it’s my best season because I make players around me better.”

Salah — alongside Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold — is out of contract at the end of the season. While there remains an expectation that he will agree a new deal at Anfield, the 32-year-old is remaining tight-lipped on the state of negotiations.

Asked if there are any contract updates, Salah said: “In a very polite way, no.”

Quizzed on what he would like his legacy to be like Liverpool, the forward added: “I want fans to remember that I gave it all to the fans, I gave it all to the city. I was here, I wasn’t lazy, I just enjoyed my football and gave it all.

“I think that’s what the city is about — they give you love and you have a connection with them because you give your all. I just want them to remember that I was here for eight years and I gave it all.”

Salah reaches 100th PL goal as Liverpool thump Ipswich

Mohamed Salah scored his 100th Premier League goal for Liverpool at Anfield but it was the 4-1 victory over Ipswich which was more significant as Arne Slot’s side maintained their stranglehold at the top of the table.

Salah’s 19th league goal of the season and 176th ever in the competition, which puts him just one behind sixth-placed Frank Lampard (177) on the list of its all-time scorers, came in between strikes from Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo as the visitors were clinically exposed in the first half.

Gakpo headed in a fourth just past the hour to afford Slot the luxury of resting the forward, fellow Dutchman Ryan Gravenberch, and Szoboszlai with 25 minutes remaining.

Ipswich, who have now lost eight of the last 11 league matches, did not manage a shot until the hour mark and got off lightly in some respects as had their hosts – for whom this was the first of six games in 18 days in four competitions – not eased off the intensity it could easily have been a repeat of last week’s humiliation at Manchester City.

  • ‘Star Boy’ Salah unsure over  Liverpool future

‘Star Boy’ Salah unsure over  Liverpool future

Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah says he is “more out than in” at the Premier League leaders with still no offer of a new contract on the table.

The Egypt striker, whose deal expires at the end of the season, scored twice as Liverpool came back to beat Southampton 3-2 away on Sunday to open up an eight-point gap at the top of the standings.

Not such good news, however, for the Liverpool fans who sang Salah’s name at St Mary’s were his post-match comments.

“Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay at the club. I’m probably more out than in,” Salah, who has scored 10 Premier League goals and made six assists this season, told reporters, opens new tab.

Salah, who stopped to address reporters before boarding the Liverpool team coach, said he was disappointed by the situation.

“I love the fans and the fans love me but it’s not in my hands. Let’s wait and see,” he said.

A soccer source said contact between Liverpool and Salah’s agent was ongoing and had been positive.

Salah joined Liverpool in 2017 and has become a cult hero at the Anfield club for whom he has scored 165 goals in 262 Premier League appearances.

The way he has begun this season suggests the 32-year-old is still very much at the peak of his powers.

“I’m very professional. Everybody can see my work ethic. I’m just trying to enjoy my football and I will play at the top level as long as possible,” Salah said. “I’m just doing my best because this is who I am and I try to give it all for myself and for the club. We will see what happens next.”
