The Police in Ondo State said yesterday that the abducted Laragunsin of Ode-Iyasan community, Oba Abiodun Oyewunmi, has been rescued unhurt.

Its spokesman, Mr. Femi Joseph, said the royal father regained his freedom at Gbelegun village, a riverine community in Edo State early yesterday through a combined effort of the marine police, police anti-kidnapping squad and some military officers.

The monarch was abducted at his palace in Irele Local Government Area by some unknown kidnappers early last week.

The hoodlums demanded N40 million ransom, but it was not sure if his abductors were paid before he was rescued.

Buhari’s aides frustrating negotiations with militants, says monarch

Notable elders and traditional rulers from Bayelsa State, yesterday, told President Muhammadu Buhari that some of his aides were frustrating the proposed peace talks between his government and the militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).

The elders who eulogized the President for taking a decision to lead the dialogue, however, said discordant tunes among presidential aides created doubts in the process.

They said the Avengers became skeptical of the dialogue following signs of deceit, fraud and disharmony among the aides.

The elders under the auspices of Bayelsa Elders for Progress, Peace and Good Governance (BEPPGG) led by their Coordinator, Chief Ayibatonye Goodnews and ýSecretary, Chief Lucky Ebifaghe, wondered why attacks on pipelines had continued despite dialogue and ceasefire.

They alleged that the recent activities of key aides from the region including the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachichukwu and the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Brig. Gen. Paul Boroh, were frustrating the peace efforts of the Federal Government.

The concerned elders, in an open letter to the President said: “President Buhari should investigate the genuineness of purported meetings held between the Presidential Amnesty Boss, Paul Boroh and Dr. Ibe Kachichukwu.

“How can they claim to have met stakeholders and the militant attacks continues? They met some fake militants and stakeholders and wasted scarce resources of the Federal Government on jamboree.

“The Amnesty boss, who claimed to have relocated to the creeks of the region was only sighted in Tompolo’s community with clandestine meetings without solution to the continued bombing of the Oil and Gas facilities.

“Buhari should investigate the money expended on the jamboree without result. We insist that the Presidential Amnesty Office should be probed following the alleged failed sharing of resources to fake Avengers.

“The lack of knowledge on key issues of the region and wrong signals sent to militants ýalong the creeks are frustrating the needed peace process. Many of the purported stakeholders have made money from the self created jamboree in the region. Genuine Niger Delta Stakeholders should be consulted for sustained peace.”

Since then, no contact has been made with his family by his abductors on what ransom should be paid for his release.

A palace source said the hoodlums came into the village through Owena River which serves as boundary between Ondo and Edo state around 10.30pm and went straight to the palace where they demanded for the king.

Irele Council Chairman, Hon Sanmi Elumaro, who confirmed the incident said the kidnappers numbering about 10 came into the town through the waterways and headed to the palace.

He noted that the abdutors were fullly armed as no one in the community could challenge them until they finished their operations in the village.

Elumaro said he could not say whether or not the kidnapping has to do with the chieftaincy dispute in the town as the monarch was properly installed as the monarch despite the legal tussle over the throne.

The council boss said since the abduction, the Navy and the Police in the riverine area have been on the trail of the suspected kidnappers.

The Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Mr Femi Joseph also confirmed the abduction of the monarch.

The Aladeokun of Alade-Idanre in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Olusegun Akinbola, has urged the state government to be sensitive to the plights of workers.

Speaking with The Nation in his palace, Oba Akinbola, who is a former lecturer of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Osun State, said the strike embarked upon by the workers needed the intervention of traditional rulers and other key stakeholders to resolve.

  • Monarch petitions SSS over plans to install parallel ruler

The traditional ruler of Itoga in Badagry area of Lagos State, Chief Suru Hoteyin Amosu, has petitioned the Lagos State office of Department of State Security Service (DSS), following alleged attempt to install a parallel monarch in his community.

In a petition, dated May 11, 2016, Chief Amosu claimed that the Onibereko of Ibereko in Olorunda LCDA, Oba Israel Ade Okoya, has been making surreptitious attempts to impose another monarch on his domain shortly after his installation by the Akran of Badagry.

The petition, tagged,” Impending breach of peace”, reads: “The Baale in-Council in the Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State writes to draw your attention to an impending breach of public peace being orchestrated by Oba Israel Ade Okoya, the Onibereko of Ibereko, Badagry, to install yet another Baale of Toga community against the earlier approval order given by the Lagos State government through the Ministry of Local Government  and Chieftaincy , which instructed and directed both the Badagry Local Government Chieftaincy Committee and its chairman, His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi, the Akran of Badagry and both had performed the traditional and constitutional installation of Chief Suru Hoteyin Amosu as de facto Baale of Toga community on Wednesday April 13, 2016.

“The entire Toga community now lives in fear and apprehension as the news of a second Baale in same community is underway by the Onibereko of Ibereko, an Awori, who (is) poised to install an Egun Baale in a 100 per cent. This unconstitutional event was initially slated for Friday May 13, 2016 at the palace of Onibereko in Ibereko, Badagry. It took a court injunction to put him to a pause, and as usual he is likely to carry out this ‘unholy’ action… which may result in a serious public turmoil consequently leading to a breach of the peace.

It added: “Sir, this piece of information is offered to furnish your good offices for your immediate action so as to forestall breakdown of law and order. We are peace-loving people”.

However, in a telephone conversation with our correspondent, Oba Okoya denied knowledge of any plan to install a Baale in Itoga.

He explained that the matter has been taken to a state High Court in Badagry, adding that the affected community is not within the jurisdiction of Akran of Badagry, as a court judgment and a gazette by the state government had stripped him of such functions.

His words:” I am not planning to install anyone as Baale of the community; it is, however, important to say that their allegation that Akran of Badagry is the consenting authority over their community is not true.

“The truth is that there is a judgment against the Akran of Badagry, which prevents him from installing anyone as Baale of the community (Itoga).I have a copy of the judgment and it is even gazetted by the state government.

“Besides, is it possible for anyone to be installed as Baale of a community by a traditional ruler outside his immediate local government? Itoga is within the Olorunda Local Council Development Area, not Badagry Local Government. So, how can those who made these allegations justify their claim when their community is not in Badagry Local Government?”

Monarch threatens to banish herbalist over client’s death

The traditional ruler of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi, has threatened to banish a controversial herbalist from the town for his alleged complicity in the death of one of his clients, Miss Busayo Ojo.

The Nation exclusively reported on April 30, 2016, how the popular herbalist called Alado allegedly prompted the late Busayo to sleep with her father, Clement, when they came for treatment in his ‘clinic’.

Busayo, 35, believed to be under the spell of a “spirit husband” was taken to Alado by her father, Clement , sometime in May, 2015.

They left their home town in Ogbagi Akoko to see Alado for treatment during which Alado allegedly forced them into the abominable act.

Busayo was said to have mysteriously fallen ill afterwards, leading to her death on April 17, 2016.

She however revealed what transpired during the visit to the herbalist before she died.

Apparently embarrassed by the alleged excesses of the herbalist and the negative light it has painted the community, Oba Alabi, gave the witch doctor “the last warning”.

Alado reportedly drew the ire of the Ilawe traditional cabinet, the Alawe-in-Council, who took turns to lampoon him for allegedly extorting innocent people in the name of helping them to find solutions to their problems.

These were said to be some of the issues that transpired on Tuesday at a meeting held by the Alawe, his chiefs and a delegation of chiefs from Ogbagi Akoko in Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The death of Busayo had sparked tension in Ogbagi with the chiefs of the town spoiling for war with the Ekiti-based herbalist.

Leaders in Ogbagi community alleged that Alado, who runs a radio show to promote his business, ordered Busayo’s father to have sex with her after giving them some fetish objects.

The father of the deceased lady also allegedly confessed to Ogbagi chiefs that the herbalist ordered him to caress her daughter’s private part and suck her breasts to ward off the spirit husband.

The herbalist however denied knowing the late Busayo and her father.

But Clement had maintained that he is in possession of the herbalist’s consultation card issued during their visit.

Ogbagi chiefs have since thrown a challenge to Alado to come over to their community and swear to a traditional oath to prove his innocence.

In a telephone conversation with The Nation on Thursday, one of the senior chiefs in Ogbagi community, High Chief Oshodi, said concerned community leaders in the town paid a visit to the traditional ruler of Ilawe and his chiefs on the matter.

He explained that the Owa of Ogbagi, Oba Victor Olasehinde Adetona, could not make the trip.

Oshodi disclosed that another meeting, which the Owa of Ogbagi would attend, would be held soon.

Those in the delegation from Ogbagi to Ilawe include himself (High Chief Oshodi), High Chief Arua, Chief Eli, Chief Asoje, Chief Bobatolu and Busayo’s father.

He said: “We (Ogbagi chiefs) went to Ilawe on Tuesday where we met with the Alawe of Ilawe and the Alawe-in-Council and they all expressed concern with what Amusa Baba Alado has been doing.

“In fact, the chiefs lambasted him and dressed him down for all the alleged atrocities he has been committing by extorting money from people and asking them to do unseemly things.

“The Ilawe chiefs said many people had been reporting him on the sums he had allegedly collected from them; people he collected huge sums of money from all in the name of helping them find solutions to their problems.

“In fact, the Alawe of Ilawe told Alado pointblank that the latest incident involving Clement and his daughter, Busayo, should be the last time he (Alado) should be involved in such a scandal.

“Kabiyesi Alawe told Alado that if he is involved in another act again that could bring the name of the town into disrepute, he would be banished from the town.

“Now that we the chiefs from Ogbagi have gone to the Alawe, he (the Alawe) and our own king (the Owa) will now meet as soon as our Kabiyesi returns from his trip.”

Oshodi told our reporter that Alado initially denied knowing the victim and his father but later admitted knowing them when the herbalist was confronted with evidence.

He said: “Before Alado confessed, he first denied knowing the victim and his father. In fact, we heard when we got to Ekiti that he had been severally warned by his colleagues over some things people have been saying about him.

“When he initially denied, the CD of a broadcaster that exposed him on air, was played to him (Alado) and he knew the game was up.”

When asked what will happen if Alado refuses to come to Ogbagi as demanded by the chiefs of the town, Oshodi said: “There are traditional rituals to be carried out if he fails to come and the whole world will see the effect.”
