Okpebholo inaugurates new appointees, promises to chase criminals out of Edo

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Monday, November 25, inaugurated new appointees at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin, while pledging to eradicate criminal activities and restore lasting peace in the state.

Speaking during the inauguration, Okpebholo emphasized his administration’s zero tolerance for crime, stating that criminals would not be allowed to disrupt the state’s peace or escape justice under his leadership.

Among the appointees were Emmanuel Okoebor, who assumes the role of Commissioner for Finance; Paddy Iyamu, appointed Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB); and retired Commissioner of Police, Friday Ibadin, who now serves as Coordinator of the Edo Security Network.

Governor Okpebholo urged the appointees to use their positions to uplift the state, improve education, strengthen security, and enhance financial management to foster Edo’s development. He commended their dedication and encouraged them to work towards making the state a better place for all.

He said: “You know why you are here, and the task ahead of you. You have to use your position to reposition Edo State. Edo should come first in all you do, before your personal goals.

“In terms of education, it was trust that enabled you to get to that position, and I believe in your ability and capacity to deliver, and with hard work, I believe you will rebuild our educational system.

“You have been doing this with your money, but now is the time to use the resources of the state to move the education sector forward. When we say a new Edo is rising, this is the time to show it.

“I believe retired CP Ibadin is not a pushover in terms of securing Edo people. It is time to pursue criminals and send them out of our land.”

For the finance commissioner, Edo governor stated that Okoebor was not a novice, but experienced in the banking sector, while urging him to use the experience to salvage Edo state’s treasury.

He said: “You have been in the banking sector and have the experience. You know the job, we did not pick you up from the street. You need to bring the experience to bear, to save our land and money, so we can use the money to develop Edo State.”

The new finance commissioner, Okoebor, who spoke on behalf of others, assured Okpebholo and the people of Edo state that they were committed to assisting him in realising his five-point development agenda.

The 24 members of the Edo House of Assembly, at last Monday’s plenary, cleared the appointees after the adoption of the report of its committee on rules and business.

Some guests at the inauguration included Edo Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa; Secretary to the Edo State Government, Musa Ikhilor; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Gani Audu; Edo State Head of Service, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa; and some permanent secretaries, among others.

    …as ex-gov kicks

Edo state governor, Monday Okpebholo, has constituted a 14-member committee to verify state assets under the immediate past administration of Godwin Obaseki.

The committee, which will be chaired by Dr. Ernest Umakhihe, is set to be inaugurated on Monday at 1 p.m. at the New Festival Hall of Government House in Benin, according to a statement by Okpebholo’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.

Anslem Ojezua will serve as the deputy chairman, with other members including Prince Kassim Afegbua, Patrick Ikhariale, Taiwo Akerele, Patrick Idiake, and Rasaq Bello-Osagie.

Other members are Fredrick Unopah, Mrs. Abdallah Eugenia, Patrick Obahiagbon, Kenny Okojie, Mrs. Lyndsey Tes-Sorae, Abass Braimoh, and Frank Edebor, who will serve as the committee’s Secretary.

Itua said: “In furtherance of Edo Governor’s initiative to set the dtate on the path of development and accountable leadership, the need to set up a state assets verification committee becomes very imperative.

“Despite repeated calls for a more holistic database of the assets and liabilities of the previous administration, the Godwin Obaseki-led government came up with very scanty and limited assets and liabilities of the state.

“In line with the governor’s campaign promise to ensure probity, accountability and transparency in government, and to deepen the governance process, a committee, made up of respected sons and daughters from Edo State, has to be constituted.”

Obaseki, through his media aide, Crusoe Osagie, however, stated that the barrage of empty probes by Okpebholo, was a smokescreen to mask his incompetence and unpreparedness for office.

He said: “Our attention has been drawn to a laughable and utterly ridiculous statement by the Monday Okpebholo’s administration, setting up a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to probe the administration of his predecessor, His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki, who is globally acclaimed to have run one of the most transparent, accountable and prudent governments in the history of Nigeria.

“This is another in the list of the barrage of meaningless probes which the governor and his directionless government is embarking on since they got into Dennis Osadebey Avenue.”

The twenty-four-member Edo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Monday Okpebholo’s request to appoint 20 special advisers to enhance the effective administration of the state.

This approval followed a letter submitted by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Musa Ikhilor, seeking the House’s consent for these appointments.

The motion for approval was moved by the Assembly’s Majority Leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian, and seconded by the Minority Leader, Eric Okaka.

Aiguobarueghian cited Section 196 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which grants the governor the authority to appoint special advisers.

The motion received unanimous support during a voice vote, allowing the Chief Blessing Agbebaku-led Edo House of Assembly to clear the way for Okpebholo to proceed with the appointments.

Additionally, the Edo House of Assembly received a letter from the governor nominating Emmanuel Okoebor as Commissioner for Finance-designate, while requesting the lawmakers to confirm this appointment.

Okpebholo kicks off construction of first flyover in Edo, to decongest traffic

The Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, officially launched the construction of the first flyover bridge at the popular Ramat Park in Benin, the state capital, on Tuesday, November 19.

This project is part of the government’s efforts to reduce traffic congestion in the city.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Okpebholo announced plans to build two additional flyover bridges at Dawson Road Junction and the Sapele Road/Adesuwa Road Junction, both located in Benin.

He emphasised that the completion of the Ramat Park flyover, which connects the Benin-Agbor-Asaba-Onitsha and Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi-Abuja Expressways, would significantly enhance the economy and the social landscape of both the capital city and Edo State.

The governor referred to Ramat Park as a vital gateway to Benin and other regions of Nigeria, highlighting that the construction of the bridge would greatly improve the driving experience for motorists in Benin and commuters travelling along the expressways.

He said: “I warmly welcome you to the groundbreaking/kick-off of the construction of Ramat Park flyover in Benin City.

“We have gathered to witness the beginning of a very important project that will transform the economy and social fortunes of our capital city and indeed Edo state. Ramat Park is a gateway to Benin City and other parts of the country.

“Ramat Park flyover will provide a new lease of life for motorists in Benin City and communities along the two corridors.

“During our campaigns a few months ago, I specifically promised to construct flyovers, to ease transportation and reduce the traffic gridlock in our city. Today, one week into my administration, we are here to fulfil that promise, and deliver the dividends of democracy.”

Edo governor also described Benin as the first capital city of Africa, when Europeans first came to the continent in the 14th century.

He said: “So, we must give the city a befitting facelift, to also encourage the development of tourism.

“Let me use this opportunity to appreciate the Speaker and other honourable members of the Edo State House of Assembly for their cooperation. To the contractor, CCECC Nigeria Limited, we look forward to seeing you work day and night to meet the 18-month completion period.

“Let me assure Edo people that in the execution of this project, my administration will abide by all relevant laws.

“To our motorists here, please bear with us, as you also make some sacrifices by being patient with the contractors, in the next 18 -months.”

Amen Ogbemudia, the daughter of a former governor of Edo state, Samuel Ogbemudia, who resides in the area, hailed Okpebholo on his visionary leadership, which she said was fast bringing hope to Edo residents.

Ogbemudia’s daughter assured that the Edo governor would perform well, stressing that the steps he had taken so far had shown that he meant well for the Edo people.

A youth of the host Oregbeni community, Emmanuel Aigbogun, appreciated Okpebholo on the bold steps while stating that he had written his name in gold, through the construction of the bridge.

Aigbogun said: “You made a promise, and you are here to fulfil that promise today (November 19, 2024), by doing the groundbreaking of the Ramat Park flyover.

“We are behind you, and will continue to support your administration.”

Okpebholo signs revised N486b Appropriation Bill into law

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has signed the revised Appropriation Bill of N485.63 billion into law, thereby marking a significant move by the new administration to ensure rapid implementation of developmental projects.

The budget, as approved by the House of Assembly, is divided into N202.65 billion for recurrent expenditure and N282.99 billion for capital projects.

Okpebholo, yesterday at the Executive Council Chamber of Government House, Benin, hailed the lawmakers for their swift action in passing the bill, which he believed would set the tone for transformative governance.

He said: “I want to thank you (lawmakers) for your cooperation and the speedy passage of this bill. With this momentum, Edo State is set to experience remarkable development.’’

Speaker Blessing Agbebaku and other 23 lawmakers attended the signing ceremony.

Governor Okpebholo says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not happy with the way Edo is, in view of lack of commensurate infrastructural development and absence of legacy projects.

He promised to kick off construction of flyovers.

He said his administration was already working, and President Tinubu would join him to fix Edo, which would surely be accomplished.

Okpebholo spoke in Benin yesterday while inspecting some ongoing road construction and repairs.

He visited Upper Mission Road Extension, by Aduwawa junction; Obadan Junction; and Benin-Auchi Expressway, to ascertain the level of work done since contractors were mobilised to sites.

  • Obaseki’s final, unreflective broadcast

    Obaseki’s final, unreflective broadcast

A day or so before Senator Monday Okpebholo was sworn in last Tuesday as Edo State governor, his predecessor Godwin Obaseki attempted image laundering through a vainglorious broadcast detailing his achievements. The broadcast exemplified his love for hyperbole. He didn’t end up speaking about many achievements, nor covered too many subjects, but he was at least intense and seemed absolutely but uncritically self-satisfied. It mattered little to him that the public thought little of his achievements, hence their repudiation of his candidate Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) whom he tried to foist on the state in the September governorship poll. Any other outgoing governor would have used the broadcast to reflect on what he did right and what he did wrong, but the self-assured Mr Obaseki sees himself as infallible, a virtuoso of political and social engineering who transcended the mediocrity of the Edo rabble. The outcome of the election and the resounding repudiation of his candidate should have presented him the opportunity to engage in deep reflections. But characteristically of him, he spurned all entreaties offered him by nature and politics.

In the very first paragraph of his address, Mr Obaseki spoke blithely about ‘achieving the monumental transformation of our dear state’, a feat he believed was made possible by the ‘vision, health and courage’ God gave him. It is unlikely he exaggerated. He didn’t seem to lack courage, at least going by the hundreds, if not thousands, of Edo political and traditional leaders he alienated. He also seemed to have enjoyed robust health; but if he was ever challenged in that region, it was nothing alarming or worth the public fretting over. As for vision, it is a word used flippantly by every tinhorn politician, a misunderstood concept that so many, including the highfalutin Obaseki himself, misconstrue and consistently misuse. Perhaps there was a scintilla of vision in the few daring changes he claimed to have midwifed in governance, but in the truest meaning of the word vision, there was little extraordinary or lasting about the changes. He appeared convinced the changes would last, but like many things about him and his ideas, he is always thoroughly mistaken. Overall, and still speaking about God in the idiosyncratic religiosity of Nigerians and their leaders, it is reassuring that his address was in a sense measured as he did not dare speak about wisdom. God gifted him courage, vision and health, he enthused; but he was silent on the most important virtue needed in leadership: wisdom, which he incontestably lacked.

Referring to particulars, he spoke about the dire need from the outset to do a ‘systems reset’ in Edo in order to ‘rebuild institutions’ and ‘return Edo to past glory’.  To this end, he boasted, “we needed to build strong institutions, not strong men or godfathers.” Of course, in the end, he also tried to transform into a godfather of some sort, but floundered in drawing a difference between his style and his predecessor’s, Adams Oshiomhole. To win re-election in 2020, he had accused Mr Oshiomhole of being a godfather when the latter denounced his highhandedness. Mr Obaseki, who is neither moderate nor modest, continued: “I’m very proud that Edo parades Nigeria’s most advanced public service…a civil service that is nimble, fast, responsive, future focused, private sector facing and technologically compliant.” Given his well-known tunnel vision and his appalling incompetence in drawing comparisons, how on earth could he tell that the Edo civil service he tinkered with had suddenly become the ‘most advanced’?

If in eight years of governing Edo Mr Obaseki could not boast of anything worth anyone remembering, it would be a disaster for even a man so self-absorbed. No one can deny that he had a little impact on the state’s industrial sector, or on growing the state’s economy from N10bn to N25bn, assuming his statistics are not self-serving, or on growing the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to ‘peak at N85 billion by December…’ Despite Edolites thinking little of his achievements in the technological sector, it must be conceded that he was no pushover. The problem, however, is that he construes the insignificant much he has done as entitling him to some measure of greatness, or to an approximation of unexampled leadership, perhaps by global standard. He is mistaken. But as he plaintively put it in his address, perhaps equating his administration to the philosopher-king category: “Unfortunately, recent events and the conduct of certain elements in our democratic space have shown us that the light which democracy and good governance beams can be dimmed. However, it can only be for a while. I fervently believe that any attempt to foist illegality and injustice on a democratic system cannot endure, because the wish of the majority will always prevail.”

It is ironical that Mr Obaseki was oblivious to his self-incriminating statements. Did he not think that the wish of the majority he alluded to in his address prevailed in the last governorship election, and did that majority not fear that he was trying to foist illegality and injustice on them? He spoke of the fear of dimming the light democracy and good governance beamed, a dimming he derisively attributed to the conduct of certain elements in our democratic space. But he was unapologetic about deliberately and dictatorially barring over a dozen elected lawmakers from taking their seats in the Edo House of Assembly for years, or about getting his deputy, Philip Shaibu, impeached for expressing interest in succeeding him. Absolutely, Mr Obaseki was no democrat. To now speak of his fears that the light of democracy was dimming on account of the activities of certain unnamed elements is to thumb his nose at the public, feign ignorance at the degradations he brought upon the legislature, and demonstrate his recklessness and contempt for a liberal ethos.

In the concluding part of his address, it was time for salutations and applauses. He said, without a hint of compunction: “All these achievements which I have enumerated and the progress we have made in the last eight years will not have been possible without the support which I received from a wide range of patriotic sons and daughters of Edo State, both at home and in the diaspora. It would not have been possible without the support of our development partners, clerics and our religious leaders who prayed for us ceaselessly. It would not have been possible without the blessings of our traditional rulers.” Such infernal lies. When he presumed to recognise ‘patriotic sons and daughters of Edo’, it is understood that he drew a dichotomy between his sycophantic crowd and his hated critics. Other than that, it is hard to understand what he meant by ‘clerics and religious leaders who prayed for us…’, when in fact he and his wife exploited, for political reasons, a willing and ingratiating church that poured scorn on a ‘miserly’ APC candidate Okpebholo who was unable to match the generosity of the PDP candidate and his godfather. It is even harder to comprehend what he meant by the ‘blessings of our traditional leaders’, when everyone squirmed at the audacity with which he fought the Bini monarchy to a standstill over nondescripts.

For electoral advantage, Mr Obaseki punned Lagos, suggesting that Edo could not be made to conform to the mores of the former federal capital on whose financial milk he was suckled. He is back to Lagos whose ample bosom accommodates his anonymity as well as shields him from the menaces and scornful looks of Edolites. He should have chosen a different destination. In the opening paragraphs of his address, he acknowledged that the curtains were being drawn on his reign. Yet he governed the state as if the day of departure would never come. Clearly, given the temper of his address and the inelegant but blatant phrases he deployed to conceal his lack of contemplation, he will continue to miss the point about what it means for curtains to be drawn on a leader’s time in office. Have the lives of his people been changed forever in unmistakable, almost permanent way? Let him answer this poser honestly, if he is capable.

JUST IN: Okpebholo orders immediate freezing of Edo bank accounts

Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered the freezing of all State-owned bank accounts with immediate effect until further notice.

Okpebholo also warned commercial banks, heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to comply with the order immediately without any delay.

In a statement on Thursday by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, Okpebholo also warned that anyone, including heads of MDAs and civil servants who flout the order will be severely punished.

“All bank accounts in all the commercial banks have been frozen. Commercial banks must comply with the order and ensure that not a dime is taken out of the confers of Government until there is a further notice.

“Heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies must comply with this order and ensure that there is a full compliance without any further delays.

“After the necessary investigations and reconciliations, the Governor will do the needful and decide on the way forward. For now, this order stands,” the statement reads.

According to Itua, the Governor, in the meantime, has asked the relevant Government agencies to reverse the Ministry of Roads and Bridges to the Ministry of Works. The reversed infamous name was conceptualised during the administration of Godwin Obaseki.

Governor Okpebholo said since no bridge or good road was constructed by the administration of Obaseki, it is absurd to maintain such a name.

The Governor ordered relevant government agencies to implement the new order and immediately reflect the new name.

“It is funny how you can call a Government institution Ministry of Roads and Bridges. Ironically, no single bridge was built by the same administration. Not even a pedestrian bridge.

“In the coming days, we will look at more actions taken by the previous administration and more decisions will be taken that will be done in the best interest of the State,” the statement concluded.

Okpebholo: Bat died on my bed day after Edo Gov election but…

Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo has claimed a day after the keenly-contested September 21 governorship election, he found a dead bat on his bed.

He said this was while he was awaiting the results of the poll but God Almighty saved him.

He urged Edo residents and other lovers of democracy worldwide to always put their trust only in the Lord without seeking lesser gods.

Okpebholo, during a praise concert, as part of activities for his inauguration and Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, admonished Nigerians and other friends of the country to always hold onto God alone, irrespective of the challenges they face in life.

The praise concert was attended by top politicians, eminent clerics, many outstanding gospel musicians from across Nigeria and beyond and numerous worshippers, who celebrated with Okpebholo and Idahosa.

Edo Governor said: “I want to thank God. In this last election (on September 21, 2024 in Edo State), while I was praising God, they (the enemies of democracy) were busy operating from Arise. They (traducers) were busy operating from Facebook. They were busy operating from Channels.

“But I took the battle to God, because I knew the secret. Few days to the election (governorship, in Edo State), they said this guy (Okpebholo) was crazy.

“We gathered to praise God in this (Edo) state. They said what was he doing? They were there at Arise, but I was listening to the voice of God. I won the battle.

“After the (governorship) election (in Edo State), in the morning of Sunday, September 22, 2024, I came into my room. I met a bat that died on my bed, without me shooting any arrow, but the Spirit of God was there. The arrow of God settled it. The hand of God delivered me.

“I am also grateful to the men of God that stood in the gap for me. I am grateful to those that believed that with God all things are possible. I will give you one piece of advice: trust in God alone, because he will do it for you.”

Okpebholo also revealed that he did not consult any native doctor, prophet or visited any shrine to seek help throughout his senatorial  contests (in 2023) and governorship (in 2024).

Okpebholo inspects bad roads, orders contractors back to sites

Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo, less than 24 hours after his inauguration, inspected some bad roads in Edo and ordered contractors to return to sites to fix the failed portions in Benin metropolis.

Okpebholo gave the directive during his inspection of Upper Mission Extension Road by Aduwawa Junction and the Ramat Park axis, in Benin, the state capital.

He decried the bad state of the roads in Benin and its environs, while assuring the residents that work would commence immediately, declaring he was in a hurry to bring the dividends of democracy to the people.

Okpebholo noted that Edo residents deserved good and motorable roads.

He said: “During the governorship campaigns, I promised that I was going to hit the ground running. Today, I ordered contractors back to the sites. We have no time to waste.

“We promised our people that we would fix and construct the roads. There is only one dry season in a year. This is the time to immediately move to sites and fix the roads.

“So, Edo residents should expect good things to happen. We will fix our roads, and ensure that our people enjoy the dividends of democracy.”

Some of the areas where works are to commence immediately include the 7.5km Temboga Road, Lucky Way Junction Road by Aduwawa and Ramat Park – Ikpoba Slope Axis Road.

The other parts of Benin to experience immediate mobilisation of contractors to sites are Eyaen Road and Obadan Junction along the Benin–Auchi Expressway.
