Food security: Okpebholo allocates 3,000 hectares for farming

Edo State Government has allocated 3,000 hectares of farmland across the three senatorial districts in the state under the Back to Farm project of Governor Monday Okpebholo, to ensure food sufficiency.

It will be recalled that about 60 hectares (148 acres) had been cultivated in Iguoriakhi, Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo, to kick off the 2025 farming season.

Speaking during an inspection of the farm at Iguoriakhi, Okpebholo said the initiative was the first phase of his Back to Farm project.

He said the initiative aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for national food sufficiency.

Okpebholo, who was led on the tour of the farm settlement by Dr Osagie Peter, permanent secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, said his administration would replicate the initiative in Edo Central and  Edo North to ensure food sufficiency in the state.

The governor assured the farmers of continued support to ensure sufficient food production during the 2025 farming season.

“We are committed to embracing agriculture to grow and develop Edo economy.

Osagie said about 250 farmers would participate in the first phase of the project.

Governor declares state of emergency on Edo public schools

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has declared a state of emergency on public schools, ‘’because most of them are in bad condition.’’

Okpebholo, who was accompanied on inspection of some public schools in Ikpoba/Okha and Egor local governments in Edo South Senatorial District, lamented the sorry state of facilities at the schools located in urban areas.

He expressed displeasure about the conditions of the schools visited.

The governor said: “Edo children deserve a better schooling environment that will bring out the best in them.

“While campaigning for the votes of the electorate in Edo State, I promised to declare a state of emergency on public schools across Edo State that lack modern facilities and conducive environment for learning.

“Visiting Army Day Secondary School in Ikpoba/Okha Local Government and Evbareke Secondary School in Egor Council, I am not pleased with what I saw. I have no choice but to begin the action from the schools.

“I feel very bad about the situation of the schools that I inspected today. Look at the type of schools our children are attending. It is not acceptable at all.

“We stopped on the road on our way to one of the schools because erosion has cut off the road. This is not good for our children, as we want the best for them.

“From tomorrow, work will begin here, as the school visited has no fence, and the road leading to Army Day Secondary School has been washed off by erosion. We must give Edo children quality education to set them for the future.

“The road leading to Army Day Secondary School is known as Boundary Road, off Lucky Way. The road leads to Temboga.”

Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, said information got to the ministry on the harsh condition facing students of the school.

He said the governor was visiting schools to see things for himself, because he wanted to feel the plight of the students and ensure every Edo child had access to good structure and teachers in their schools.

Okpebholo excited as work on first flyover bridge in Edo state reaches advanced stage

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed joy over the pace of work at the construction site of the first flyover bridge in Edo State, located at Ramat Park, in Benin City.

The project expected to be completed in 18 months is being executed by the administration of Governor Okpebholo. The project was flagged off in November, 2024, barely one week after Okpebholo assumed office as governor of the state.

The contractor handling the project, Mr. Andy Duan of CCECC told Governor Okpebholo during an unscheduled visit to the site that 20 percent of the project had been done so far.

Duan noted that the construction, which started last year, has reached 20 percent of stage of completion, assuring the people that the company will work according to specifications.

“For this work which commenced in December 2024, we have done seven pillars, underground cross beams and other works are ongoing as we are doing our best to meet up with the construction period,” he stated.

Governor Okpebholo, on his part, said he is not sleeping, as he continues to monitor projects cross the State to ensure the jobs are done according to agreed specifications.

“For the Ramat Park flyover, the contractor is doing well, and I am impressed with the speed of the job done so far. If they continue with this kind of speed and pace, I believe they will complete the construction at the stipulated time. Edo Gov predicts landslide victory for Tinubu in 2027

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu will secure a landslide victory in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at the New Festival Hall of Government House, Benin, while welcoming 17 local government chairmen who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Okpebholo praised Tinubu’s leadership style.

He commended the president for making bold decisions that previous administrations hesitated to take, particularly the removal of the contentious fuel subsidy, which he said had set Nigeria on a path to growth and development.

The governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to fast-tracking Edo State’s development and improving the lives of its citizens. He noted that within just four months in office, his team had already begun transforming the state’s narrative.

He said: “I welcome you all, our chairmen, who have come to join us, and I praise you for the courage and bravery to leave your party to join the APC. It takes a grounded politician to take this step that you have taken today (March 19).

“Let me draw your minds back to where we are coming from as an administration. We practically met that Edo was not working when we came into office. What we met in Edo was insecurity, killings, looting Edo treasury using consultants to deceive Edo people, and other backward policies implemented by the Godwin Obaseki-led administration, but we came and changed the narrative.”

Okpebholo also used the occasion to thank a former governor of Edo state, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, the representative of Edo North Senatorial District; Edo Chairman of APC, Jarret Tenebe; and all members of the APC for their continued support and sacrifices.

He thanked the councilors who spoke for their various communities through the impeachment exercises in the councils and subsequent election of the new chairmen across the 17 local government areas of Edo.

Edo governor said: “2027 is a reality in Edo State, as President Bola Tinubu will continue in office. I charge the 17 of you today that the campaign for the election of President Bola Tinubu has started here. Go back to your various local governments and erect his billboards, to draw home the message of re-electing President Tinubu.

“There is no vacancy in 2027 in Abuja. Those forming a political party now cannot govern us. They ruled their states and the people suffered from kidnapping, but since they left offices, their states are now free. Such people cannot rule Nigeria.”

Okpebholo assured the President that Edo state was right behind him, predicting a landslide victory in the election, as the APC would continue to lead the country.

He said he and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, were both committed to the development of Edo, and his administration had come to rescue the state.

Edo governor expressed optimism that leaders of the opposition parties in the state would join the APC fold, following his infrastructural development strides in Edo.

Edo Secretary of APC, Lawrence Okah, who received the defectors, thanked the new members, urging them to unite with other members of the party, as the administration of Okpebholo had come to rescue the state from retrogression.

Okah said: “Edo governor desires to unite the state and ensure the people enjoy the dividends of democracy, through his developmental strides.”

Responding on behalf of the chairmen, Edo Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Kelvin Iyere, who is the Chairman of Esan Central Local Government Council of Edo, thanked Okpebholo and all APC faithful for accepting them into the fold.

Iyere noted that they decided to defect from PDP because of the crisis in their party and their love for the development that Okpebholo had brought to Edo state.

Group hails Okpebholo over strides in education

The Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa has commended Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo for achieving great milestones in education, particularly at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma.

A statement by the Country Director of the Coalition, Mr. John Mayaki, said:“We are pleased to hear the news that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) in Abuja has granted approval for the long-awaited induction of 810 nursing graduands of Ambrose Alli University, who had been unable to proceed in their careers due to years of stagnation.

“This is a monumental breakthrough for the students, their families, and the healthcare sector in Edo State.”

Besides, the Coalition commended Okpebholo for his decisive intervention, ensuring the approval of the indexing of all nursing students, which came with interim accreditation and the lifting of the ban on nursing admissions.

According to Mayaki: “This achievement alone will restore confidence in AAU’s nursing program and position the institution as a leading center for medical education in Nigeria.

“I wish to express our profound appreciation to His Excellency for his unwavering support and for creating an enabling environment for the progress, growth, and development of AAU. The Coalition also praised the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, for his relentless efforts in driving this process to a successful resolution.

“We call on all the stakeholders in the education and healthcare sectors to continue to support the governor because this induction of these nurses will not only improve the lives of the affected students but also strengthen Edo State’s healthcare workforce at a critical time.

“No doubt, this upcoming induction will equip these nurses with the necessary certifications to serve their communities and contribute significantly to the improvement of healthcare services across the state and beyond.

“We are glad that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration remains dedicated to driving meaningful reforms in education and healthcare, and also ensuring that Edo State becomes a model for progress and excellence in Nigeria,” he said.

It was learnt that the decision to resolve this issue was reached during a high-level meeting between Iyamu Ambrose Alli University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olowo and the leadership of the NMCN, led by Registrar Dr. Ndaji Alhassan.

  • Edo PDP on life support, struggling for relevance – Gov. Okpebholo

Edo PDP on life support, struggling for relevance – Gov. Okpebholo

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has criticized the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, describing it as a “sick” party on life support, with its leaders struggling for relevance.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo likened Edo PDP to a broken-down car abandoned by its driver after years of reckless leadership.

He further stated that the party had become a shadow of its former self, plagued by internal divisions and lacking direction.

He said: “Instead of seeking redemption, Edo PDP leaders have resorted to aimless wailing against a government that is steadily gaining the trust of the people.

“Much like a drowning man flailing in the waters of irrelevance, the PDP is desperately grasping at anything that gives the illusion of political survival.

“Their latest antics, rather than winning them public sympathy, only reinforce the obvious: Edo PDP is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), gasping for air, and rather than battling for survival, its leaders are wasting their dwindling oxygen on unproductive tantrums.

“The PDP is not just a sick party on life support, it is a party suffering from terminal political irrelevance. The faction-ridden, and scandal-infested remnants of what was once a ruling party has now been reduced to a collection of desperate voices clinging to lies, propaganda, and outright misinformation, in a last-ditch effort to remain in public discourse.”

Edo governor also stated that it was ironic that the same PDP that spent the last eight years squandering the state’s resources and alienating its own members, now claimed to be the voice of reason.

He said: “The same party (PDP) that crushed its foundation members: the Legacy PDP, under the weight of impunity and godfatherism, is now pretending to be champions of the people.

“Their (Edo PDP leaders’) newfound role as self-appointed critics of Governor Monday Okpebholo is not driven by patriotism or concern for Edo’s progress, it is nothing more than the desperate growl of a wounded lion that has lost its territory.

“Former Governor Godwin Obaseki and his co-travellers are the architects of PDP’s downfall. They ran the party into the ground with their arrogance, side-lining loyal members, imposing candidates, and rewarding opportunists who saw governance as a personal business empire.

“Now that they have been rejected at the poll (Edo governorship of September 21, 2024) and abandoned by the people, their remaining foot soldiers have adopted an attack-dog strategy, barking at every single move of the Okpebholo-led Government.”

Edo governor, however, vgave example of a staunch PDP lawmaker, Sunday Ojiezele Ikpenomen, who willingly defected to the APC, not because of money, but in view of the fact that he saw the unprecedented developmental strides of the new administration in the Southsouth state.

He said: “Edo PDP leaders should stop assuming that every politician shares their old-fashioned, corruption-ridden mentality. Instead, they should focus on fixing their own internal disaster, before pointing fingers at a government that is already delivering results.

“Here is the part that baffles the people of Edo: how does a party that wasted eight years of golden opportunity suddenly find the moral audacity to question a government that is barely a few months old?

“Governor Okpebholo is not a man of empty words and flamboyant speeches, he is a leader of action. He does not waste time on grandiose promises. Instead, he gets to work on real, practical governance. One of his first major projects: the construction of the Ramat Park flyover, was welcomed by Edo residents as a long-overdue development, but, as expected, PDP leaders in the state, in their usual tone-deafness, raised a needless alarm, questioning the necessity of the project. The irony is not lost on anyone: this is the same party that promised industrial hubs and economic rejuvenation, only to leave behind white elephant projects that served no real purpose, other than enriching a few consultants.

“Edo PDP leaders should take a moment to reflect on their own failures, before attacking the new government. What became of all the so-called innovation hubs that Obaseki loudly inaugurated? Where are the jobs he promised Edo youths? What happened to the billions of Naira allocated for infrastructure that never materialised? Instead of addressing their abysmal record, PDP’s remnants prefer to sit on the side-lines and scream at a government that is busy fixing their mess.

“Their latest tactic: flooding the media space with baseless allegations, only proves one thing: they are still reeling from their disgraceful electoral defeat. Having failed to produce any credible argument at the Edo State Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja, their last resort is to cry foul at every policy of the Okpebholo’s administration.

“But here is where they missed the point: Edo people are not fooled. They have seen the difference between rhetoric and practical governance. They are witnessing first-hand, the commitment of a government that listens, engages, and acts. While PDP’s new poster boys are busy playing opposition for the sake of opposition, Governor Okpebholo is rolling up his sleeves and delivering results.”

Okpebholo also maintained that he was not just leading a government, but leading a rescue mission to recover Edo from the abyss PDP’s leaders pushed it into.

He said: “Under PDP, Edo was seen as a state trapped in the hands of political Pharaohs, and suffocating under bad governance, but Edo residents have now declared that they will never go back to Egypt. They have rejected the PDP’s culture of deceit, corruption, and stagnation.

“No amount of lies, misinformation, or media outbursts will change the reality: the PDP is politically dead in Edo State. If Chris Nehikhare and his cohorts are so desperate to stay relevant, they should consider writing fiction novels, instead of embarrassing themselves with propaganda that even their own party members do not believe.

Edo continues demolition of kidnappers’ property

Edo State Government on Friday continued the demolition of kidnappers’ property to serve as a deterrent to other criminals.

Governor Monday Okpebholo also intensified crackdown on individuals aiding kidnappers.

The latest demolition took place in Eshioriri-Erah, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo, targeting the home of a septuagenarian accused of acting as an informant for kidnappers operating in the Owan and Esan forests.

The suspect, Mr. Karimu Audu, was alleged to have provided critical information to suspected kidnappers, hosted them overnight, and supplied them with food.

The villagers, who spoke in confidence, claimed that the people who were opposed to Audu’s actions either mysteriously disappeared or faced violent attacks in their farms.

The Special Adviser to Edo Governor on Security Affairs, Mr. Akhere Paul, while addressing reporters at the scene, emphasised the government’s zero tolerance for complicity in kidnapping.

He stated: “We are here because of conspiracy. Audu has been working with kidnappers in the forest. Let this serve as a warning to everyone—if you see something, say something. If you conspire with criminals, your day will come, just like today has come for him to face the law.”

The Commander of Edo Task Force, Michael Anetor, a Superintendent of Police (SP), reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to eradicating kidnapping.

Anetor said: “We are here to enforce the law. It is not my wish to see people’s property destroyed, but we must restore peace. Kidnapping must stop. With three property already demolished, let this be a lesson. Anyone considering aiding kidnappers should reconsider immediately.”

Eshioriri-Erah, a border community between Owan East and Esan West local government areas of Edo, is known for its vast forest connecting Edo North and Edo Central Senatorial Districts, a terrain often exploited by criminal elements.

Edo govt threatens to sack non-performing contractors

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has threatened to sack non-performing contractors handling projects across the state.

He asked them to work according to specifications and agreed timelines or risk termination of their contracts.

Okpebholo, who spoke yesterday when he inspected some roads and drainage projects, expressed displeasure about the execution rates.

He frowned at the slow pace of work on Orior-Ozolua Community Road, with residents complaining that the contractor was not always on site.

The governor and his entourage inspected road and drainage projects at Orior-Ozolua, Orior Uteh Palace Road, New Uteh Road, Ekiuwa Quarters and Upper Ekenhuan open drain by Nigeria Army Cantonment, among others.

The crowd that received Okpebholo and his entourage at the sites,  thanked him for remembering them, saying the last administration of Godwin Obaseki forgot about their existence. They prayed for the success of the Governor Okpebholo administration.

At Orior-Ozolua in Uhunmwonde Local Government, Mr. Sylvester Igbinovia complained about the slow pace of work by the contractor handling the road and drainage projects.

He said: “Mr. Governor, this contractor is just too slow on this job. They close before 2pm when they are on site, but most times, they are not on site.

“They are here today, Your Excellency, I am sure they know that you are coming, this is why they are here today.”

Okpebholo, who inspected the thickness of the drainage at Orior-Ozolua, said he was displeased that the contractor did not meet project specifications, and instructed him to do the right thing or have his contract revoked.

He said: “Why did you reduce the width of the drain? You reduced it on both sides. Look at my face, if you are not doing the right thing and not working according to specifications, I can revoke the contract any moment without fear or favour.”

The governor said he wanted the contractors working for the state government to do quality jobs, noting that the funds for the capital-intensive and people-oriented projects belonged to Edo people and must be utilised effectively and efficiently, to move the state forward.

  • Something big in the offing for Edo farmers

Something big in the offing for Edo farmers

    • By John Mayaki

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo state is planning something big for Edo farmers in the weeks ahead – he has invited anyone who wants to act as an Observer to indicate interest – he is set to get our people back to farm in a manner never seen before, it was learnt.

During a recent appearance on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout, Governor Okpebholo laid out his post-100-day agenda which includes tackling insecurity head-on and Back to Farm Initiative – both would take center stage in the coming weeks, the governor said.

According to governor Okpebholo, the coming weeks will mark a significant step in this direction, and we invite anyone interested to join as farm observers to witness our efforts in promoting farming and food security firsthand.

He said food production is a key component of his five-point agenda, and that we must take decisive action to ensure our people have access to sufficient food supplies.

His words, “Edo State is blessed with fertile land, which in some cases requires little to no fertilizer. However, due to climate change, we now need fertilizers to maintain productivity.

“We will engage with the President and the Minister of Agriculture to seek support and ensure that our farmers have the necessary resources to succeed”, the governor said.

Okpebholo’s leadership style is defined by his close engagement with key stakeholders, including the federal government. His relationship with President Tinubu is particularly noteworthy, as he proudly acknowledges the president’s consistent inquiries about the well-being of Edo people.

The governor narrated how Mr. President would always ask him about the well-being of Edo people whenever he sees him. “My friend, how is Edo State?” the president would often asks – an indication of his vested interest in the state’s development.

For Governor Okpebholo, this is more than just a casual question; it is a reminder of his responsibility to ensure security, improve infrastructure, and enhance the livelihoods of Edo citizens. His willingness to collaborate at all levels of governance tells of his commitment to securing the best for his people.

It also reassures us in Edo state that Mr. President cares about Edo people and about the leadership of Governor Okpebholo. According to the governor, “I am proud to align myself with him and honored to be considered his political son. To God be the glory.”

If our farmlands are secured, our farmers will certainly return to their farms. This strategic approach by the governor will lead to a significant increase in farmland cultivation, resulting in improved agricultural productivity. Our farmers should be able to cultivate about 95% of Edo State’s arable land, contributing significantly to the decline in food prices.
