  • Sultan hails Makinde for building mosque

Sultan hails Makinde for building mosque

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, yesterday, inaugurated the Organisation of Tadhamunul Muslimeen Mosque, Adogba, Iwo Road, Ibadan, built by the Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde.

Governor Makinde had, on October 19, 2019, promised to rebuild the Adogba Central Mosque from his personal resources, following plans to pull down the former structure to allow for the development of the Iwo Road Bus Terminals.

The Sultan commended Governor Makinde for making a commitment to build the mosque and fulfilling it, saying: “When you see the way this mosque was before and it actually turned out to be this, you cannot but thank Allah for the life of Seyi Makinde for thinking this way and also doing it. A lot of people say something but implementing it is always a problem,” he said.

The NSCIA President-General, who conferred his name ‘Sa’ad’ on the governor for embarking on building a house for Allah in such a beautiful manner, said the new mosque, which also has an Islamic School, would help people to strive to be more educated for the world and thereafter.

He said: “I am the one called Sa’ad, but today I want to rename you Sa’ad. We thank Allah for bringing us to Ibadan for this very important programme.

“About three years ago when I spoke with the governor on phone, he told me he was building a mosque in a strategic place in Ibadan, and I told him I know where the place is. He told me I would commission the project and I assured that I would fulfill his request.

“I have moved around the whole area here and I can tell you that this is the most beautiful structure here. Whenever you pass along here, you won’t miss it and that is what we are supposed to be doing for the people. We should build houses of Allah in the most beautiful manner.

“The mosque is not just a place of worship but a school also. Now, having an Islamiya with a beautiful mosque, we cannot but strive more to be educated for the world and hereafter. So, let us use such facilities to educate ourselves, our brothers and sisters so that we live peacefully with one another as peaceful coexistence is important to us.

“Today, we are here by the will of Almighty Allah and this is a very good work, which we believe the governor has taken up. This is a good history we want to be replicated everywhere. So, we thank you, His Excellency.”

The Sultan charged that the edifice should be well-maintained.

Makinde commended the Muslim Community in Oyo State for its support during the March 18 governorship election, reiterating his promise to run an administration that is fair to all religions in the state.

The governor explained that when he decided to pull down the Adogba Central Mosque and a church, which both stood on the spot where the state government is building its mega Bus Terminal, there was insinuation from the Muslim Community, as some people had already begun to view the appointments made by his government as one-sided.

He said: “I went to the mosque and I worshipped with the Muslim Ummah. I told them that the mosque and the church around it will be demolished, because we already put forward a roadmap for accelerated development, which means we had to focus on the development of our infrastructure.

“I understood the fact that there was trust deficit between the government and the people. So, before we even said anything, some people were already insinuating.

“But when I spoke at the mosque that day; I saw that 90 per cent of the people believed me and every time I ran out of money building this mosque, because it was built with my personal money, I always remembered those 90 per cent who believed me that I would rebuild the mosque as I promised.

“We are here today and I am sure that everyone knows the story. We actually completed this project before the election. But some people said I should not be re-elected because I am a Christian. Today, I can tell the entire world that I got over 70 per cent of the votes from the Muslim community in Oyo State.

“So, I want to take this opportunity to appreciate the Muslim leaders and the community for believing in us and I want to make that solemn promise that in the next three years and some months, we would run an administration that will balance out any leaning and ensure that people get what they are entitled to.”

Explaining his reason for building the mosque, the governor stated it was imperative to also cater to people’s spiritual needs by building what he described as spiritual infrastructure, after his administration has embarked on a massive building of physical infrastructure by connecting all zones of the state with good roads.

He noted that his government has also been taking care of what is known as ‘stomach infrastructure’ through the infusion of billions of Naira into the economy of the state on a monthly basis by paying salaries and pensions as and when due and had also implemented policies in the education and health sectors, which have yielded positive results.

Also speaking, the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states, Alhaji Dawud Makanjuola Akinola, commended Governor Makinde, describing his act as something that will not be forgotten in the history of Oyo State.

“We gather here today to celebrate this mosque, which was personally built by our amiable governor with his personal money. How are we going to recognise a Muslim? If we confer on him the Amir’mumeen of Oyo State, I think he is worth it. When you see the worth of this mosque that an individual built from his pocket he deserves everything.”

The state’s Deputy Governor, Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, equally hailed the governor for fulfilling his commitment, even as he appreciated the Sultan of Sokoto, who he described as the unifier.

Also in attendance at the grand inauguration were the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero; a former Head of Service of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed; top Islamic clerics and government functionaries in the state.

Wike approves funds to maintain Abuja Nat’l Mosque, Christian Centre

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has approved funds for the maintenance of the National Mosque and the National Christian Centre.

The Minister made this known after routine inspections of the religious centres in Abuja on Thursday.

Wike said he was satisfied with work at the National Mosque and the Christian centre despite the initial stoppage of the work by contractors due to additional works to be done.

He said the Christian Centre had requested funds for Phase 2 of the renovation, noting however that if the FCT did not have the funds to complete the project, he will meet with President Bola Tinubu for more funds.

He said: “Jobs were awarded for the maintenance of the two National Monuments, which is the Mosque and the Church, and the jobs stopped because there were additional works that ought to be done.

“I’m satisfied with all I have seen today and I have given the approval that the money should be released to the contractors to complete the additional project.

“While the Christian Centre had requested for a phase II, which I said that I would look at the cost, if it is within what the Ministry of the FCT can build on its own, we would likely go ahead, but if it is what is above our threshold, we would have to go back to Mr. President for approval”.

Wike further emphasised that the maintenance of the religious centres were part of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda and the President was not against any religion but interested in inclusivity for persons of both faiths.

He said: “What this tells you is that, it is in line with the agenda of Mr. President which is the Renewed Hope agenda of running an inclusive government, not abandoning National Monuments like this, which is part of our pride. Look at what we saw at the mosque, see the landscaping, look at what we have seen here in the church and the landscaping.

“They are built for the city and that is why I have said that Mr. President is not anti any religion. He takes all religions as one because we are all one Nigeria. Of course, you should know that he gave me the approval to come and visit these places and take up what it requires to be done”.

  • Benue Acting Governor says no mosque was burnt

•As Groups raise alarm over plan to attack Makurdi

Benue State Acting Governor, Engineer Benson Abounu yesterday warned those creating panic with alarms of attacks on innocent people in Makurdi and other towns of the state to desist forthwith.

Abounu, who was reacting to a newspaper report about the purported killing of some members of the Hausa community in Makurdi and burning of mosques, dismissed the report as a fabrication.

However, he asked the security agencies to arrest and prosecute all the brains behind the recent attacks on innocent people in Gwer East and West, Guma, Okpokwu, Logo and other local government areas.

He called on the people to support security personnel with timely and useful information to enable them prevent further attacks on the state.

His warning came even as three groups in Benue State yesterday alleged a fresh plan by Fulani militia to unleash terror on Makurdi, the state capital.

Mdzough U Tiv (MUT), Idoma National Forum and Omi Ny’Igede claimed that heavily armed men were being mobilised for the execution of the alleged attack.

Chief Edward Ujege, Mr. Amali Amali and Chief Enyi Ode in a statement on behalf of the three groups said: “There are strong indications that these herdsmen militia have taken over villages around Makurdi metropolis, including the village after NASME Barracks, behind Makurdi Modern Market, University of Agriculture, Makurdi axis and Mbalom where two priests and 18 others were killed recently.”

They alleged that over 360 military assault rifles were acquired and distributed for the planned terror attack.

The three groups in a separate petition to the Speaker of the Nasarawa House of Assembly said Tiv in Nasarawa State are currently facing “ an existential threat’ following  “the wanton killing of Tiv people in Obi, Doma, Awe and Lafia East Local Government Area on Nassarawa South Senatorial District.”

They pleaded with the Speaker and members of the Assembly to “intervene and stop the killings’ immediately.

They added: “There is large scale destruction of property, food stuff and farm lands with homes taken over by the terrorists.

“Over 10,000 villages have been ransacked with about 100,000 of our people displaced and now taking refuge in various IDP camps within and outside the state.

“One hundred and twenty-two indigenes of Nasarawa State who are of Tiv extraction have lost their lives to the insurgency attacks between January and April, 2018.

“While we do not concede that the attacks will continue unabated, we are tempted to conclude based on the foregoing that if this is not checked, Nasarawa State would have lost 244 souls by the second quarter of this year.”

  • “Don’t block roads during prayers” – Lagos Govt. to religious bodies

The Lagos State Government on Monday urged religious bodies to desist from causing obstruction in public places or blocking roads during worship.

Dr Abdulhakeem Abdullateef, Commissioner for Home Affairs, said this at the 2018 Ministerial Press Briefing of the Ministry to mark the three years in office of Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, at Alausa, Lagos.

Abdullateef said that causing obstruction or blocking the public road to offer prayers was not proper, as it could endanger lives of worshipers.

“Let us face the fact; you know I am a chief Imam. There are places where your prayers will not be accepted by God, and this is serious.

“If you block the road while praying, that prayer is not acceptable to God. Worshiping in the middle of the road and denying other road users is unacceptable and should stop.

“It has happened before, where people claimed that they were having their prayer and an ambulance was taking a woman to hospital.

“We fought to disperse all of them, one of them even accused me that I am not a believer, I told him, yes I’m not a believer in obstruction,” he said.

Abdullateef said religious bodies had no right to block the road during prayers as they did not have survey plan of the road as part of their property.

“Nobody has survey plan of the road as part of his own C of O. When a Mosque or Church is approved for construction by the Ministry of Physical Planning, you will never see the road as part of your property. So, you have no right.

“All we need to do is that if you have population explosion, you can pray twice. A group can pray first, the second group can pray later.

“So, obstruction of public spaces during prayer is unacceptable; even religion does not allow it, and the same thing applies to both Muslim and Christian religion.

“Whatever we want to do, let us keep ourselves within the ambit of the law,” he said.

The commissioner urged residents to report Churches or Mosques who constitute nuisance or cause noise pollution during their religious activities.

“I need to explain the difference between trespassing and nuisance that trespassing is when you carry out what you want to do on a premises that is not yours while nuisance is when you are doing something within your premises and you now extend to somebody else’s premises.

“We will continue to engage religious leaders in the state because this issue is not about sentiment but the law.

“The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), Lagos chapter, is doing a good job in resolving issues like this at the local level to promote peaceful co-existence among religious bodies,” he said.

Buhari commiserates with Egypt over attacks on mosque

President Muhammadu Buhari has sent condolences to the government and people of Egypt over the heartless attacks on a mosque in North Sinai that left many dead after prayers on Friday.

President Buhari, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, condemned the dastardly act on innocent worshipers.

He said that the attacks has further reinforced the position that terrorism has no relationship or respect for any religion, and should be visited with the full wrath of the law.

The President reiterated that the workable panacea to such mindless and irresponsible attacks on citizens would be a global joint action that continually shares intelligence, simulates scenarios and regularly updates on both local and international threats.

He prayed that the almighty God will receive the souls of the departed, and comfort the families of those directly affected.
