  • MTN commits $10b to Nigeria’s digital infrastructure

MTN commits $10b to Nigeria’s digital infrastructure

MTN has said since 2001, it has committed over $10 billion into deepening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, enhancing widespread connectivity and financial inclusion.

Despite economic headwinds, the Group said it remained committed to Nigeria’s long-term potential and the broader African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) vision.

The telecom giant said as Africa stands at the point of a profound transformation, the imperative for greater intra-continental cooperation has never been clearer. The path to shared prosperity depends not on the progress of individual nations but on the collective strength of our commitments.

Central to this vision is the relationship between South Africa and Nigeria, two of the continent’s largest economies, and the institutions that serve as bridges between them.

MTN Group said it hosted Minister Parks Tau (SA Minister of Trade Industry and Competition) and his delegation at its Johannesburg Headquarters. “At a time when global uncertainties are reshaping trade and technology, Africa must respond not in isolation, but in solidarity. As MTN, we see it as our duty to serve as an economic diplomatic bridge between Nigeria and South Africa — driving growth, fostering inclusion, and unlocking opportunity for the Africa’s shared prosperity,” the carrier said.

“MTN’s journey exemplifies what is possible when two great nations collaborate. As Nigeria’s largest South African investor, MTN has long viewed its presence not simply as a commercial venture but as a platform for inclusive development. Since commencing operations in Nigeria in 2001, we have invested more than $10 billion in the country’s digital infrastructure.

“Today, MTN Nigeria serves over 80 million subscribers, employs thousands directly, and supports hundreds of thousands of livelihoods across its extended value chain.

“Yet, while the economic footprint is significant, our greatest source of pride lies in the social and developmental outcomes accompanying this investment, expanded access to connectivity, enhanced financial inclusion, and the empowerment of individuals and enterprises through digital technologies.

“Still, the operating environment remains complex. Macroeconomic challenges in Nigeria, including currency depreciation, inflation, and constraints in accessing foreign exchange, have placed pressure on business continuity and investor confidence. Despite these difficulties, MTN remains firmly committed to its business case and its long-term presence in Nigeria, underpinned by a belief in the country’s enduring potential and strategic importance to the continent,” it added in an e-note at the weekend.

However, it said for South Africa and Nigeria to truly unlock their bilateral potential, a number of long-standing issues require resolution. The upcoming South Africa–Nigeria Trade and Investment Summit, to be held in Abuja later this year, will present a unique opportunity to address these concerns. The Summit serves not merely as a diplomatic engagement, but as a catalyst for policy reform, reciprocal market access, and institutional dialogue. Importantly, it should reinforce the private sector’s role in shaping practical, actionable solutions that support cross-border trade and investment.

The AfCFTA offers a historic platform to actualise these ambitions. Yet its success will depend as much on infrastructure and digital connectivity as it will on tariff liberalisation or regulatory harmonisation.

“As a pan-African operator, MTN is investing heavily in the digital foundations of AfCFTA, facilitating seamless mobile communication, enabling digital payments, and building platforms for cross-border entrepreneurship.

“We also believe that integration must extend beyond economic frameworks to include cultural exchange and people-to-people engagement. One such initiative is our MTN Media Innovation Programme, which brings emerging Nigerian media professionals to South Africa for immersive learning. Through programmes like these, we aim to cultivate not only knowledge and skills, but also enduring bonds between our nations’ future leaders,” the telco explained.

Football fans hail MTN for hosting watch party in Akwa Ibom

Football fans in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, have praised Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) for hosting a watch party during which Chelsea and Liverpool clashed in a thrilling encounter in the English Premier League on Sunday.

The event attracted hundreds of football enthusiasts especially supporters of both English clubs to Pyramid Lounge and Grill along Udo Udoma avenue who watched the match on a big branded MTN screen.

Officials of MTN said the watch party was brought to Uyo to strengthen brand affinity, deepen on-ground activities as well as a broaden football engagement.

The venue of the watch party beamed with pre-match activities as fans awaited the 4.30pm kick-off time fans for the showdown between the top teams in the EPL.

While some fans  said that it was going to be an interesting game to watch since Liverpool have already gathered enough points to win  the league, others said Chelsea would be pushing for a place in European top flight football competition next season, thus making it more interesting.

Before the match, fans  were given the opportunity to predict the outcome of the match both at the end of the first half and at full time which created more anxiety and ignited the passion among the fans.

Other engagement activities included asking fans to name the team list for both clubs and giving the opportunity to show their football skills in front of the fans.

Those who got the prediction correct smiled home with beautiful prizes like MTN branded gift items incuding umbrellas and fez caps.

The gathering on  a cold Sunday evening came alive when the match started with fans cheering their teams, and though the rain came intermittently, it did not take away the shine of the game as fans savoured the moment with glee.

And when Chelsea took the lead within the third minute of the first half, the arena erupted in jubilation.

“Though I am a Liverpool fan, I want Cheleas to win  the  match,’ an excited Liverpool fan who was donning their jersey said.

Asked why he wanted Chelsea to win, he said his club (Liverpool) were sure  to win the English Premier League this season   as they were currently topping the table with less than four matches to go.

“Though I want Chelsea to win, I also want Mo Salah, Liverpool’s top striker  to score today so that he would be in contention for the highest goal scorer award,,’  he said.

The  officials of the company  who were on hand to give the fans an impressive experience maintained that the watch party showed the company’s love for “supporting sports  and engaging with fans across the country, ”  as a way to show depend brand affinity.

“This is the kind of experience that has been lacking here. We don’t  get to watch matches on the big screen, MTN has created an experience that we will cherish for a long time,’’ he said.

At the end of day, Chelsea fans were the ones who made “some noise” as they beat Liverpool 3-1 with goals from E. MTN Group confirms network breach by cybercrooks

MTN Group yesterday confirmed that it was targeted in a cyber attack but has moved to calm concerns, assuring customers, partners, and stakeholders that its key systems and customer data were not compromised.

The telecoms giant in a statement released on Thursday, April 24, revealed that it had detected unauthorized activity within its network, and had acted swiftly to isolate and neutralize the threat.

The development underscores the importance of cybersecurity on the telecom network that has become a critical national infrastructure.

“Our collective national web is anchored on secure and resilient telecommunications infrastructure. Hence, the need for an efficient CNIPP can not be overstated,” Association of Licensed Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ALTON) Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo said at a cybersecurity forum in Abuja.

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, said the attackers had sought to disrupt operation, but their attempts were unsuccessful.

He said the incident did not affect Nigeria specifically, and critical infrastructure, including customer information and core business functions, remained secure.

“We take cybersecurity very seriously and have robust systems in place to detect, isolate, and neutralize threats. Although this attack attempted to breach our defences, our security protocols worked as intended, and our core infrastructure remains secure,” Toriola stated.

MTN did not disclose the nature or origin of the cyberattack on its systems, Cybersecurity analysts have warned that telecom companies across Africa are becoming prime targets for cybercriminals. This growing threat is linked to the sector’s vast subscriber base and the continent’s rapidly expanding digital economy.

An internal source within MTN confirmed that the breach did not affect operations in Nigeria, reinforcing the company’s earlier statement that local infrastructure and services remain intact.

The attack comes at a time when Nigeria is accelerating its digital transformation agenda, an ambitious effort that places increased responsibility on service providers to strengthen their cybersecurity protocols.

MTN has pledged to work closely with cybersecurity experts and government authorities to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident. The company also affirmed its commitment to bolstering its systems and defences to prevent future breaches and safeguard customer trust.

Telecom networks are high-priority, high-impact targets for cyberattacks. According to the Microsoft Digital Defence Report, cyberattacks against critical telecom infrastructure have risen 40per cent in two years.

According to Censys, a security community’s trusted source for Internet visibility and intelligence, in 2023, Russian hackers were able to infiltrate Ukrainian telecom operator Kyivstar and knock out services for over 48 hours.

According to Reuters, over 24 million customers were left without mobile services for several days, with the service loss also effectively shutting down other critical services, including air raid sirens, some banking services, ATMs, and point-of-sale terminals. Attackers would also have had access to location services, allowing them to track device location.

Data is currency, and telecom providers have become custodians of humanity’s digital footprint.

Censys said telcos send and store data for billions of people and millions of organizations across the globe, and data exfiltration is table stakes for cyber criminals.

The data harvested in some telecom attacks goes further than just the sale of information on the dark web, though, as evidenced by a 2023 data breach at Mint Mobile.

The exposed data from this particular attack contained subscriber identity module (SIM) and International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers, which would allow a threat actor to conduct SIM swapping attacks, which is when an attacker ports a person’s number to their own device. Once they have access to the number, they can try to infiltrate user accounts with password resets and access to the multi-factor authentication OTP text codes. BleepingComputer notes that, “Threat actors commonly use this technique to breach accounts at cryptocurrency exchanges, stealing all assets stored in the online wallet.”

While the threat landscape is daunting, carriers are fighting back with innovative approaches to security.

Court orders MTN to pay N840m for trademark infringement

Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd. and the Registrar of Trademark, Patent & Designs to pay N770 million in damages for infringing on Citilink Accesscorp Limited’s registered trademark “WEBPLUS.”

The court found MTN guilty of unauthorised use of the “WEBPLUS” trademark, which was lawfully registered by Citilink under Class 9 of the Trademark Registry.

Justice Osiagor issued a perpetual injunction prohibiting MTN and the Registrar from registering or issuing any certificates for “WEBPLUS,” “WEB+,” “MTN WEBPLUS,” or any similar variations under Classes 9, 16, and 38.

In suit FHC/L/CS/1124/2014, Citilink Accesscorp, represented by its counsel Azubuike Obiekwe, sought “a declaration that it is the sole legal owner of the WEBPLUS trademark under Registration RTM No. 65162”.

It prayed the court to hold that MTN’s use of “MTN WEBPLUS” or “WEB+” constitutes trademark infringement.

The plaintiff sought a perpetual injunction preventing MTN and the Registrar from issuing or registering any similar marks.

MTN’s legal team, led by Fidelis Adewole, argued that the defence of honest concurrent use applied in this case.

He contended that even if the trademarks were similar, MTN had used the mark without deceptive intent and in good faith, urging the court to dismiss the claims.

Justice Osiagor rejected MTN’s defence and ruled in favour of Citilink, granting general damages of N840 million, calculated at N70 million per year from 2014 to 2025, for loss of business and brand dilution.

“An additional 15 per cent annual interest will be applied until the judgment is fully paid,” the judge held.

He also granted a perpetual injunction restraining MTN from using the ‘WEBPLUS’ trademark.

Justice Osiagor refused a request for special damages, including legal fees, due to insufficient proof.
