  • Nigerians buy 100, 000 monthly insurance policies on MTN

Nigerians buy 100, 000 monthly insurance policies on MTN

Every month, over 100,000 Nigerians buy insurance products through   mobile telecoms service provider, MTN, the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has said.

Speaking yesterday at the ongoing African Insurance Organisation (AIO) Conference and General Assembly in Kigali, Rwanda, Commissioner for Insurance, Fola Daniel said other telecoms operators should emulate MTN and use their network to deepen insurance penetration in the country.

He spoke as other countries on the continent deliberate on how to join the rest of the world to market insurance through mobile telephony by partnering with telcos.

The insurance regulator said if insurance companies partner other service providers to sell as much as MTN currently sells, the sector can sell more than 250, 000 products in a month. He said it will also reduce operational cost of insurance companies which has remained a challenge for risk bearing sector.

He said: “We are beginning to see impact of MTN deployment towards selling insurance in our market and this will bring huge market for us. We are getting 100, 000 new sales, and if we have four other  service providers doing what MTN is doing now, then we can have rapid growth. So deploying IT and telephony to sell insurance is the wise thing to do now.”

“Apart from reaching people faster, the administrative cost on the companies too is very small. One of the issues among companies in (the) Nigerian market today is the cost of doing business which is very high and above average, one of the highest in Africa.

“So if we find a means of selling more of our products without incurring much cost it will be better for us.”

According to him,  micro insurance is another area telephony will work well because the premium paid is very small.

He said: ”If companies can deploy the same model to sell micro insurance, it will be a win-win situation for everybody   “We are not unaware of the challenges of using partnership to drive mobile telephony as highlighted in this conference, so we have taken our time to scrutinise any partner enlisted by the insurance companies before giving approvals.

“Whatever agreement any insurance company is having with anybody must be communicated to the Commission for vetting.

“What we are looking at is whether the interest of potential buyers is protected, if not, we won’t approve it. We kept one or two applications for over six months because we were not satisfied.

“Until we are satisfied that the agreement entered into by the service providers and the insurance company passes our test of protecting the policy holders, we won’t let go.”

He said beyond that, NAICOM also insists that companies must make quarterly returns and bring consumer complaints to its notice through dedicated phone lines.

According to him, aside  the compliant bureau, NAICOM has set up a contact centre managed by professionals.

He said: “If you buy a policy through telephone, you must have the same medium to contact NAICOM for complaints. So, we will phone the company to find out why they have refused to pay the claim, and unless we do this on time, Nigerians will be disappointed.”

Daniel said the Commission will continue to improve on its rating, looking at other authorities in Europe and America as standards. According to him, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) gave an evaluation on its regulatory capacity in 2012 and got an average which is okay. “But we are not satisfied because we should be above average, but at least an evaluation has been done and we know our weak points and our strength, so we are looking at the gaps and doing everything to block the gaps,” Daniel said.

  • 1.1m users more as MTN posts double digit revenue

1.1m users more as MTN posts double digit revenue

Mobile giant MTN  posted double-digit revenue growth in the first four months of this year as the number of subscribers in Nigeria— its biggest market— climbed.

The company added 1.1 million users in Africa’s most populous nation in April, following the removal of a ban on subscriber identity module (SIM)-card sales imposed in March, Chief Executive Officer Sifiso Dabengwa said at the company’s annual general meeting in Johannesburg yesterday. That contributed to a two per cent rise in total customers over the four-month period.

In South Africa, sales growth slowed as mobile operators cut prices to add customers in a saturated market. The amount MTN is allowed to charge smaller companies for use of its network was reduced by the communications regulator.

“This trend is expected to continue for at least the next two quarters reflecting the adjustments made to retail tariffs,” Dabengwa said. “Growing data services and mobile money are key areas of focus for the group as traditional voice revenue remains under pressure.”

Data revenue increased 43 per cent compared with a year earlier and now contributes 17 per cent to total sales, compared with 14 per cent a year earlier, he said. Iran, Ghana, Cameroon, Uganda, Syria and Sudan all posted “healthy revenue growth.”

MTN shares fell 0.3 per cent to 223.50 rand by the market close in Johannesburg. They have gained three per cent this year, compared with a 3.7 per cent decline at biggest South African competitor Vodacom Group Ltd.

  • NCC’s ban on MTN, Airtel, Glo remains, says Commissioner

NCC’s ban on MTN, Airtel, Glo remains, says Commissioner

The Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC) has said the ban it imposed on three major telecoms firms for failing to meet key performance indicators (KPI) remains in force.

Speaking through its Executive Commissioner, Stakeholders Management, Okwchukwu Itanyi, in Lagos at the weekend, the regulator said it was irrevocably committed to using its regulatory powers to ensure that operators do the needful so that subscribers could enjoy the full value of their money.

In February, the regulator imposed a fine of N467million on Airtel, MTN and Globacom. It barred them from taking in new subscriber identity modules (SIMs) for one month so that they could put some measures in place. But the one month has since elapsed without any official statement from the regulator concerning whether it has been lifted or not.

Itanyi said the ban has been extended. “The ban on the sale of new SIM cards is on. We have not lifted the ban. (If the operators are still selling) it is something that we will investigate and if any of them is found to have fallen short of our regulation, it is something we can sanction them for.  It was for a month and we extended it. We have not lifted that sanction. It is still on,” he said on the sideline of CyberAfrica Awards night held at Lagos Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Ikeja where the regulator bagged two awards.

On the efficacy of fines, he said it is one way of allowing the operators to know that the regulator is dissatisfied with the standard of the services they render to Nigerians.

He said: “Basically, the fines are to put the operators on their toes. We are not happy with the standard of the services they are giving to Nigerians. There are KPIs and whenever they fall short, we have to sanction them by imposing fine. The fine is meant to put them on notice; we are also talking to the operators because part of the problem is that their network cannot carry the traffick of the customers available on their network. So, we are trying to ensure that they improve their network.”

The Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) said the sanction will make the affected operators to do more to meet the parameters set down by the regulator.

Its Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo said as responsible corporate citizens, the affected operators  have complied with the regulator’s directive.

He said: “As responsible operators, those affected complied with the directive of the NCC as it were. NCC gave some conditions precedent to lifting the ban and we are hoping that in their next review in terms of QoS and other parameters, the NCC will consider lifting the ban, they will find reason to lift the ban, by the time the next measurement is done, I am hopeful.

“In terms of its impact on business, I think for the affected players, it is an opportunity for them to go back in-house see what efficiency measures to put in place in order to comply with the directive of the regulator. So, the consideration is not in terms of income or loss of business but putting in efficiency in the interest of the subscribers.

“In essence, we are not counting losses on this account we are rather looking at the efficiency that can be put in place  So, we are not counting losses.”

I’ve not dumped music –Marvelous Odiete

DURING his stay in Project Fame, the MTN-sponsored talent hunt show, Marvelous Odiete was known for his charisma, courage and showmanship.

With his scintillating voice and captivating performance, he won many hearts and eventually emerged the first runner-up of the fifth edition of the music reality show.

However, he recently opened up on life after the competition and what he had been up to. He also debunked the insinuation in some quarters that he had abandoned music. “I never abandoned music. Let me correct this impression that after Project Fame, I abandoned music because I did not come first. After the show, I went into the studio and recorded a single. In fact, I am still recording more to be packaged in a way my fans will love. My fans will soon hear good music and nice lyrics in an album that will beat their imaginations,” he stated.

According to the singer, if he had emerged winner of the competition, he might not have had time to face his business. “I would have loved to win, but if you go back to my diary session, a day or two before the end of the session, they asked me a question if I was expecting to be a winner and I answered ‘No’. The truth is I was at that time thinking of other things.”

On Thursday, February 14, 2013, a few days after leaving the house, Marvelous got married to his heartthrob, Joy Ilibeno, the CEO of Blue Picture Limited, a movie distribution company.

  • MTN plans $1b Nigeria tower network’s sale

MTN plans $1b Nigeria tower network’s sale

Africa’s largest phone operator, MTN Group Ltd. (MTN) is planning to sell a stake in its Nigerian mobile tower network, which it values at more than $1 billion, this year.

Chief Financial Officer, MTN Nigeria, Andrew Bing who dropped this hint in Lagos yesterday said bidding process is already ongoing.

“There is a bidding process going on, so they’re busy doing a due diligence on us, on our towers, our processes and we’re doing due diligence on them, if they’re the right company. During this year that process will then come to a conclusion where there will be a financial bid and a transfer of towers,” Bing told Bloomberg in Lagos.

MTN is the largest operator in the country, with footprints in all the 36 states of the federation. The telco, along with two others, has been barred from adding new subscribers due to failure to meet the key performance indicators (KPIs) set by the regulatory body, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The telco last year raised N470 billion from 24 local and international lenders. The local facilitating banks include GTBank; Zenith Bank; Access Bank; UBA; Diamond Bank; Ecobank; First Bank Plc; FCMB; Diamond Bank; Union Bank; Stanbic IBTC Bank; Citibank; Keystone Bank; Mainstreet Bank; FSDH and Standard Chartered while the international banks include three from China (Industrial and Commercial Bank of China; China Development Bank and China Construction Bank); two from South Africa (Rand Merchant Bank and Export Development Bank).

The deal also saw the inclusion of KFW-IPEX Bank of Germany and Canada and NedBank Limited.

Carriers in Africa are offloading the assets, which cost more to run on much of the continent than in some other parts of the world because of the need for backup generators and batteries to guard against power failures. Towers and the infrastructure that accompanies them can account for more than 60 per cent of the expense to build a mobile network, according to data from IHS Holding Ltd., a telecommunications infrastructure company.

MTN, based in Johannesburg, hasn’t decided on the stake it will retain in its Nigerian tower network, which comprises about 11,000 towers, and that will depend on the company it sells them to, said Bing, 49, who will go on sabbatical leave from the company at the end of this month.

Bing said: “There is the need for more towers and there will be and therefore the towers do become a strategic business going forward, but having a tower to yourself is a costly business. The ability to share those costs is what helps drive profitability.”

He expressed gratitude to the teleco for selecting the state for the scheme, affirming that the mobile medical intervention would strengthen government efforts at enhancing quality primary health care delivery services, particularly at the grassroots.

“The project will involve skilled health workers going to rural communities using the fully equipped mobile clinic to deliver quality primary health care services to them and appropriate referral of complicated cases to secondary health facilities”, the governor said.

He affirmed that his government would continue to partner with private individuals and corporate organisations to move the health sector forward, while investments in human resources for health would be intensified.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka said the mobile clinic which is fully equipped with basic medical tools and drugs would be deployed to the rural areas of the state to provide services to those who do not have access to medical facilities and lauded the organisation for the gesture, assuring that the equipment would be put to proper use.

  • Artistes scout for their doubles

    Artistes scout for their doubles

Telecommunications Company, MTN, has begun a programme through which fans now seek striking resemblance with Nigerian music stars.

The project, while seeking to get artistes acquainted to their fans, is also meant to promote the MTN brand, which some of the stars represent.

Notable stars such as Don Jazzy, Iyanya, Tiwa Savage and KCee have launched the campaign through a social media initiative tagged MTNCelebdouble.

The youth-centric initiative, according to sources, is for the MTN ambassadors to keep their commitment to the brand active, by creating fun and excitement among the Nigerian youth.

It would be recalled that through a similar initiative, the MTN Songstar Karaoke, a mobile App was launched in September 2013, allowing customers on the MTN network to select, listen, sing and share a karaoke version of their favorite songs on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

The MTNCelebdouble is a digital-based engagement platform, that has other artistes such as Davido, Wizkid, Chidinma, Praiz, iMike, D’Prince and Harrysong.

According to Kcee, the essence of the project is to connect fans who cherish stardom with the country’s leading music artistes. “Music and entertainment are two strong passion points of young people; they (Nigerian youth) look for opportunities to associate with their favourite artistes online or offline, as they literally admire these artistes. The concept of the Celebdouble will be a lifetime experience for young persons who become the Celebdoubles, as they get to hobnob with their musical hero.”

Kcee who is trending for his song, Pull Over, explained that the platform is using the MTN Twitter handle, Facebook page and Instagram account, because “the company has the largest number of subscribers, followers and likes on these social media and better technology that will aid the selection process.”

He urged interested youths to tag their pictures with the name of the artiste they think they share resemblance with, hashtag their entries with “#MTNCelebdouble” and subscribe to a callertune of their look-alike artiste.

In a bid to generate more excitement, the artistes have decided that the top-two most look-alikes, will be selected for a VIP day,and treated to the full perks of stardom.

“Through this service and more in the pipeline, we hope to continue to support the Nigerian entertainment industry,” says Larry Annetts, Chief Marketing Officer at MTN.

According to Annetts, a key strategic focus for MTN is to connect the Nigerian youth with their passion for music and their favourite artistes, which the organisation constantly demonstrates via innovative marketing initiatives.
