  • Buhari to focus on three critical areas if re-elected – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday said that President Muhammadu Buhari would focus on job creation for youths, power supply as well as provision of loans for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises and market women if re-elected in the Feb. 16 election.

Osinbajo disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Olota of Ota, Oba Adeyemi Obalanlege, in his palace in Ota.

The vice president said the All Progressives Congress (APC) would also boost youth employment through the N-Power initiative.

He also said the administration would improve on the nation’s power supply by giving more licenses to companies to supply transformers.

“We observed that since the privatization of the power sector, most of the companies who bought into it do not have sufficient funds to provide transformers for Nigerians,” he said.

Osinbajo further said that government would intensify efforts at providing more infrastructures, including good roads and efficient railway system.

“The decay in infrastructural development can be traced to massive corruption of the past administration,” he said.

He said that the country needed an honest and trustworthy leader like the president that would help the nation to attain sustainable development.

In his response, Obalanlege thanked God for saving the life of the vice president in the helicopter crash on Saturday at Kabba, Kogi.

Obalanlege appealed to the Federal Government to repair the Idiroko and Agbara roads linking Nigeria to some West African countries.

“Some of the industries around Agbara axis where the Ogun government generates much of its revenue left because of the bad roads in the area,” he said.

He further appealed to the Federal Government to erect a fly-over at Sango-Ota toll-gate.

Obalanlege also urged the Federal Government to create an Awori Traditional Council to prevent marginalization of the Awori.

He further appealed for political appointments for the Awori, expressing the belief   that some of their yearnings would be addressed through this.

  • World Cancer Day: Obaseki lauds Buhari on care for patients

Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has commended the efforts of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government at prioritizing care for cancer patients.

Obaseki gave the commendation on Monday in Benin City, in commemoration of the World Cancer Day, a day set aside by the World Health Organisation to draw global attention to the disease, review progress on treatment and management options with global stakeholders.

Emphasising the need for people to go for regular checks  to detect the cells early, the governor said: “Under president Buhari, we now have the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (Establishment) Act, 2017.

“The Act provides the much-needed national direction in cancer research, control and treatment and guides scientific improvements to cancer prevention, treatment and care, coordinates and liaises between the wide range of groups and health care providers with an interest in cancer.”

He added that few weeks ago, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, inspected the ongoing installation of three new cancer machines at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Lagos, as part of efforts to bring cancer treatment closer to sufferers across the country.

The governor further said that he is “aware of plans by the federal government to establish similar centres in other geo-political zones in the country to bring the treatment facilities closer to the people and check capital flight occasioned by medical tourism.”

Obaseki explained that the Federal Government inaugurated a radiotherapy centre with new multilevel linear accelerator equipment for cancer treatment in 2017 at the National Hospital Abuja, and urged Nigerians to re-elect president Buhari so that all parts of the country can benefit from his initiatives in health and other sectors of the country.

According to the WHO in its 2018 publication, “cancer is now responsible for almost one in six deaths globally. On World Cancer Day (4 February) WHO highlights that cancer no longer needs to be a death sentence, as the capacity exists to reduce its burden and improve the survival and quality of life of people living with the disease.”

The global body added in “In May 2017, Member States came together around priority actions to ensure cancer care for all. World Health Assembly resolution WHA A70/A/CONF./9″Cancer prevention and control in the context of an integrated approach” lays out a clear road map to realise the potential for prevention, early diagnosis, prompt treatment and palliative care for people with cancer.

“Since adoption of the resolution, Member States are taking action on its recommendations. Governments are enacting evidence-based risk-reducing strategies such as imposing higher taxes on tobacco and alcohol, promoting healthy diets and physical activity, and advocating for access to HPV vaccination. Approximately 30-50% of cancers can be prevented if these policies are maximally implemented.”

  • Updated: Opposition plots to discredit 2019 poll, says FG

For the second time in two weeks, the Federal Government Monday accused the opposition of fresh plans to discredit the general election before, during and after it has been conducted.

The opposition parties have targeted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Police for attack in order to prejudge the poll which will begin in the next 12 days.

It also said the opposition, led by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), had covertly raised a 10-man propaganda delegation to visit some Western capitals, including London, Brussels and Washington, DC.

It said the mandate of the team was to push the concocted line that President Muhammadu Buhari Administration has perfected the plan to rig the polls.

It alleged that the opposition had become desperate to seek victory by subterfuge.

It accused a presidential candidate of having suspicious meetings with some envoys.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed revealed the latest intelligence at the disposal of the government at a briefing attended by many local and international media.

Mohammed said the opposition was doing everything possible, including instigating widespread violence as well as relentless attacks on key institutions, to discredit the forthcoming election.

He said the opposition was already predicting carnage in the event of the President’s victory.

He said: “With just 12 days to the 2019 election, we have called this press conference to alert Nigerians to the evil machinations of the opposition, which is not campaigning to win the election – because they know they can’t win a free, fair and peaceful election – but are busy planning how to scuttle or discredit it

“Recall that on Monday, January 21st 2019, we alerted the nation, also via a press conference, to the plot by some opposition elements to scuttle the 2019 general elections by instigating widespread violence across the country. Of course we didn’t just make this up. It was based on credible intelligence

“We revealed that the plan to scuttle the polls is part of moves to push the nation into a constitutional crisis, with the plotters hoping they can leverage on that to push for an interim government.  When we raised the alarm, the opposition dismissed it. Of course they were shocked to have been found out, so we understand their panic reaction.

“To underscore the seriousness of our alert, a week after our press conference, the National Security Adviser (NSA) met with state governors to also inform them of this same plan to scuttle the polls via widespread violence. As I said at my last press conference, the alarm we raised is based on credible intelligence.

“Today, still based on credible intelligence, we can reveal that the opposition is moving a step further. They are working hard to discredit the forthcoming election before, during and after the polls.

“Specifically, they are sending a delegation to some Western capitals, including London, Brussels and Washington, DC, to push the concocted line that the Buhari Administration has perfected the plan to rig the polls. They are therefore pushing for a rejection of the results if the President wins re-election. They are also predicting carnage in the event of the President’s victory.”

Responding to a question, Mohammed said: “There is no where there is any insinuation that the Federal Government has lost confidence in the international community. I think, less we are misunderstood, we never say the opposition is hobnobbing with the international community.

“The opposition parties have decided to, instead of facing their campaigns, resort to international blackmail. We have seen a particular presidential candidate having some suspicious meetings with some envoys.

“When we have credible intelligence that the opposition is going to carry out some sinister actions, the best and most effective way is to go public”.

Asked of which of the 73 political parties contesting presidential race behind this plot, the Minister said: “There is PDP, CUPP and their allies.

Mohammed alleged that the opposition had been using a nebulous group, the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) to push its covert agenda.

He said CUPP nothing more than a reincarnated Association for Better Nigeria (ABN) which was employed to scuttle the Nigeria’s widely-acclaimed freest presidential election in 1993.

He added: “Already, they have started flying the rigging kite domestically. They have been engaging in incendiary rhetoric and in making outlandish claims using several fronts, including the nebulous Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) which, by the way, is nothing more than a reincarnated Association for Better Nigeria (ABN). Of course you all know the role that the ABN played in the failed 1993 political transition process.

“They have targeted, for attack, the two key institutions that are most critical to the success of the election: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Police. They have used every malleable and malicious personality to make wild allegations against INEC.

“Their strategy is simple: Discredit the election even before it is held, and continue during and after the polls with a view to convincing the West – which they believe they have won to their side using lobbyist-propelled propaganda – that the election is not credible.”

Mohammed attributed the desperation of the opposition to the emerging electoral reality that they might lose the presidential poll.

He added: “Some may ask: Why would the opposition go to this length? The answer is simple: They know, and are convinced, that they cannot win free, fair, credible and peaceful polls. The handwriting is on the wall for all discerning people to see.

“While President Buhari has received warm and genuine reception and adulation from huge crowds everywhere he has gone to campaign, their candidate has been exposed to apathetic and thinning crowds! Their numbers just don’t add up!”

But he restated the commitment of the President to a free and fair poll.

“On our part, we as an Administration are undaunted by their antics, even though we believe it is necessary to expose their evil plans – as we have been doing – to the world. President Muhammadu Buhari has repeatedly stated his commitment to ensuring a free, fair and violence-free election.

“He has no doubt – based on testimonies of change from Nigerians – that the achievements of his Administration, in the three cardinal areas of fighting corruption, revamping the economy and fighting insecurity, will speak for him at the polls. He did not rig his way into office and has no need to rig now that he is in office.

The Minister urged Nigerians and the international community to beware of the antics of the opposition.

“We are therefore compelled to alert Nigerians and the global community to the following:

    • The desperate opposition is doing everything possible, including instigating widespread violence as well as relentless attacks on key institutions, to discredit the forthcoming election. They know they will lose the election, but they want victory by subterfuge.
    • To further their plan, the opposition is dispatching a 10-member delegation to some Western capitals, including London, Brussels and Washington, DC, to sell the idea that the Buhari Administration has perfected the plan to rig the election. They have no empirical basis for the idea they are pushing, beyond relying on exploiting the nation’s ‘fault lines’ of religion, ethnicity and regionalism.
    • The opposition is approaching the election with an incredible level of desperation. In this regard, they have activated their own version of the infamous Association for Better Nigeria (ABN), under the guise of CUPP, to engage in unrestrained rabble-rousing and frivolous court cases. Of course, the activities of CUPP in recent times are there for all to see, even though the coalition seems to be a very poor imitation of the original ABN.
    • The Buhari Administration is committed to free, fair, credible and peaceful polls. We are glad that local and international observers are already fully mobilized to monitor the election.

“We call on all Nigerians to be vigilant as we begin the final countdown to the election. Eternal vigilance, as the saying goes, is the price of liberty. We must not allow desperate politicians to crash our democracy on the altar of their personal – and sometimes inordinate – ambition!”

  • Buhari will emerge as president again – Ajimobi’s wife

Wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, on Sunday in Ibadan declared that President Muhammadu Buhari would win the Feb. 16 presidential election.

The governor’s wife declared this at the first edition of the 2019 Women Intercessory Network (WIN) with the theme “Mega Tehila.’’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that WIN is a quarterly prayer and fasting session organised by the governor’s wife.

The wife of the governor also said that victory was certain for her husband, Abiola Ajimobi, who is contesting for the Oyo South Senatorial District.

She also expressed optimism that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would record a landslide victory at the 2019 general elections.

She, however, called on women across the nation to prevail on their children to shun violence during and after the elections.

“Buhari is going to emerge as the president of Nigeria again and Ajimobi is going to emerge as a Senator of Oyo State.

“All the APC candidates are going to win and the will of God is going to prevail in this election and in our Nation.

“APC is the party of peace and the party that can move Nigeria forward unless we want to deceive ourselves.

“This election is going to be a peaceful one, we the women of the state have prayed and God has answered our prayers because we know we serve a living God.

“I implore all women not to let their children be used for violence to disrupt the peace in the country during and after the elections,” she said.

She further urged mothers to be strong and take the responsibility in ensuring their children’s safety before, during and after elections.

In a short exultation, renowned Ibadan-based prophet, Michael Olowere, declared that the forthcoming polls would be peaceful and urged Nigerians to sustain their faith in God.

He charged Nigerians to engage in glorifying God at all times and in all situations in order to see His deliverance.

NAN reports that the programme, which held at the Lekan Salami stadium, Ibadan witnessed a turnout of over 3,000 women.

The women programme featured praise worship, sermon, scripture reading and special prayer sessions.

  • Corruption: ‘Buhari is on the right track’

The Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Professor Femi Odekunle has declared that President Muhammadu Buhari is on the right track in his fight against corruption and in exposing corrupt leaders.

Speaking to newsmen in Minna over the weekend, Odekunle, who is a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, he wholeheartedly supports the President especially as corruption had eaten deep into the Nation.

“Corruption is more dangerous than terrorism. That is why any leader that is against corruption is my leader, I will support him. That is why I support President Buhari from head to toe. Although he has not been able to fight corruption the way I want but he is making progress.

“The fight against corruption is in the right step, the President is taking the right step in the right direction because If corruption is reduced to the barest minimum, it will save the Nation a great deal. I do not care what anybody says, I know President Buhari is right in his fight against corruption.”

Odekunle further noted that despite the outcry about due process and technicalities, sometimes, in the fight against corruption, some of these technicalities may be ignored.

He expressed optimism that the President, in his second term, will take the fight against corruption to the next level.

“The fight against corruption should be like a ‘rofo-rofo’ fight. All these legal and technical things people insist must be followed will not help in the right against corruption. However, I believe next level is using rofo-rofo fight to fight against corruption.”

The Pro-Chancellor lamented that the damage of corruption has mortally affected the conscience of the youths and make them loom up to the wrong people for mentorship calling for a stricter punishment for corruption.

“The punishment for corruption must be prompt and immediate. There is need for the government to increase the type of punishment being given to those caught in corrupt practices.”

He further said that those are corrupt and believe they are safe from the corruption war should stop living in delusion as, “a time will come that those who think they are under the cover of protection will be exposed of their corrupt practices.”

  • Afenifere, NEF, Ohaneze, PANDEF, others endorse Atiku

The Presidential ambition of the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar got a major boost on Sunday as leaders of major regional bodies across the country threw their weight behind his presidential candidacy.

Coming under the auspices of Nigeria Leaders and Elders, the leaders of Afenifere, Northern Elders Forum, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Middle Belt Forum and the Pan Niger Delta Forum said they were endorsing the Atiku Abubakar for the February 16 presidential election.

President of Ohaneze Ndibgo, John Nwodo said President Muhammadu Buhari has put the nation’s security in jeopardy and should not be allowed to come back as President, adding that under his leadership, Nigeria is undergoing constitutional deadlock.

Leader of the Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo make mockery of the President, saying a man who would endorse two governorship candidates for one state is not fit to continue as Nigerian President.

Adebanjo said the President has shown clearly that he was incapable of leading the country further as he has lost control of even his Party and speaks at cross purpose with his party chairman.

Former Minister of Information, Chief Edwin Clarke accused the Buhari government of working against the interest of the Niger Delta, replacing sons of the area in key appointments in the country.

  • South-East group drums Igbo support for Buhari

A pressure group, Zikist-Buharist Movement (ZBM), has called on the people of the South-East geo-political zone to vote massively for President Muhammadu Buhari in the Feb. 16 presidential election.

The Secretary of the movement, Mr Godwin Onwusi, made the call in a statement titled: “2023 President will Turn to Ndigbo,” and issued on Sunday in Enugu.

According to him, any voter from the zone who voted for any other candidate aside President Muhammadu Buhari was working against the general interest of the Igbos.

Onwusi said Igbos should return to the “mainstream” to benefit from the infrastructural development programmes of the Buhari-led administration.

“All we need, in Zik’s tradition, is to construct a broad-based coalition with the majority in the North, majority in the West and majority in the South-South by voting for Buhari in 2019 presidential election.

“For us the coalition begins today as we need the support of Buhari’s vote-bank of 10-12 million voters in 2023.

“The year 2023 is the turn of Ndigbo to produce Nigeria president of Igbo extraction and equity, natural justice and good conscience is on our side.

“Equity, natural justice and good conscience is to our advantage and President Muhammadu Buhari we know is a man of due process.”

“Buhari’s victory is the surest and quickest route to Nigerian President of Igbo extraction.

“Therefore, we sincerely want Ndigbo to be part of Buhari’s imminent victory and its attendant critical infrastructure provision programme,’’ he said.

  • Fashola, FCT Minister lead campaign for Buhari re-election

The Minister of Power, Works, and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, along with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Musa Bello, led a campaign to further President Muhammadu Buhari’s reelection bid.

The campaign, themed FCT Next Level Task Force, took place in Abuja on Friday.

Fashola advised Nigerians to make an informed choice in the upcoming general elections in order to avoid regression in the economy and security of the country.

“We are putting our record on the line, and our government, our party, our President, Buhari, and our candidates deserve another term,” he said in an interview.

“We expect that this campaign will strengthen our bid, not only for the president but for all of our candidates.

“And whilst we have the nationwide rallies led by the president, we also have some other contact levels and campaigns led by the vice president, Senators, House candidates, and gubernatorial candidates reaching out to voters to continue to carry out our message of consolidation and the message of our achievements over the last three years compared to the last 16 years.

“We have done more with less, we have built a foundation, we have recovered the economy, the economy is back on the path of growth, we need to consolidate on what we have built.”

The former Governor of Lagos also listed Buhari’s advantages over his opponents, being “his integrity, his leadership qualities, and all his achievements especially in terms of security.

“There are places here where you couldn’t go out by 7pm just three years ago,” Fashola spoke. “We must reflect on the fact that, while there is a lot of work to do going forward, we must remember where we came from three years ago.

“A lot of stability has happened here in the past three years. People have returned from IDP camps back to their homes and it’s one thing to lose your home and be in an IDP camp, and to build up lives which have been truncated.”

FCT Minister Musa Bello also spoke in an interview, reiterating the important achievements the present administration has made, and asked citizens to make wise decisions at the polls so as to better their own future.

“Buhari has restored hope to this country, ” stated Bello, “and that is why everybody you see here man woman and child are full of hope and that is why we are encouraging them that for this to be sustained it is very important that Muhammad Buhari comes back for a second term.

“If we lose this traction it’ll be very difficult for us to rise out of the ashes.”

  • Group calls for Onnoghen’s re-instatement, resignation

The Youth Anti-Corruption Network Nigeria (YANET) has called on suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen to resign immediately considering the moral and ethical implications of his actions.

The group has also asked President Muhammadu Buhari to lift the suspension of the CJN, an action they call un-constitutional and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy against the principal of separation of powers.

Coordinator/President of the group, Ovo Otarigho said the group rejects in totality the excuse given by Justice Onnoghen as it concerns his failure to completely declare his assets and called on concerned agencies to investigate the facts behind his finances.

Speaking in Abuja at a press conference on the suspension of the CJN, Otarigho said if found guilty, the CJN should be subjected to the prosecutorial dictates of the law.

His words, “We reject in its totality the excuse given by Justice Onoghen as it concerns his failure to completely declare his assets as required by the law. A judge must not be corrupt, a judge must not be partial, even as innocent omission or ignorance remains inexcusable in the eyes of the law. We therefore call on all concerned agencies to investigate the facts behind Chief Justice Onoghen and his finances, and if found guilty, he should be subjected to the prosecutorial dictates of our laws; but until then, he is presumed innocent according to Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended until proven guilty and through proper procedure(s).

“We vehemently condemn and reject the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to suspend the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Onoghen on account of his failure to completely declare his assets, which is coming just days away from the general elections. Mr. President, your decision to interfere is contemptuous and questionable.

“We call on Mr. President to lift the un-constitutional suspension immediately and we demand the immediate resignation of the Chief Justice considering the moral and ethical implication of the case. Like I mentioned earlier, a judge must not be corrupt or partial otherwise Justice will elude the common man.”
