The placard-bearing lawyers from the three branches of the Nigerian Bar Association in the state comprising Calabar, Ikom and Ogoja, converged on the state judiciary headquarters at High Court complex on Mary Slessor Avenue before proceeding to the governor’s office on Diamond Hill to present a six-point demand to the governor for onward transmission to the president.

The Vice Chairman of NBA, Calabar Branch, Julius Idiege, read the communiqué before it was presented to the state Deputy Governor, Prof. Ivara Esu, who received it on behalf of the state Governor, Prof Ben Ayade.

The communiqué issued by the lawyers read in part, “We condemn in the strongest terms, and wholly reject the unconstitutional suspension of Honourable Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari, vide a black market ex parte order issued by the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

“We are horrified that the Hon Justice Tanko Mohammed submitted himself to be sworn in as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, thereby subscribing to this abuse of the constitution and we find the actions of the Code of Conduct Tribunal perfidious and fraudulent.”

“Unless this abuse of the constitution is redressed immediately, the rule of law will be in jeopardy and this will drive the country towards anarchy. The constitution of Nigeria must remain supreme and sacrosanct. We call on the president to immediately retrace his steps and reinstate Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen to his position as Justice of Nigeria, and preserve the constitution which he swore to uphold.”

They urged the National Executive Committee of the NBA to take all necessary steps in defence of the constitution and the rule of law.

Meanwhile, courts in the state were boycotted by lawyers throughout Tuesday. The boycott will continue on Wednesday as directed by the NBA at the national level.

  • Buhari promises more infrastructure for South East

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Aba, Abia State, pledged to provide more infrastructures to the South-East geopolitical zone of the federation.

This, he said, will give a further impetus to the spirit of industry, hard work and competitiveness for which the Igbo are known.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari said “They deserve more and more infrastructure to further excel,”

President Buhari, who kicked off a two-State campaign tour of Abia and Imo States Tuesday, was said to have got two critical endorsements for his second term bid.

“The first was from the Chairman of Aba Traditional Council, His Royal Majesty, Dr Isaac Ikonne, Enyi 1 of Aba, who called on all indigenes of Abia State to vote for the All Progressives Party, APC Presidential Candidate.

He said the Igbo people would remain loyal and committed to President Buhari for the payment of pensions to ex-Biafran security personnel; for the administration’s policy on ease of doing business which, the traditional ruler said, had benefited the Igbo more than any other ethnic group, and the massive infrastructural development going on throughout the southeast.

“You love Nigeria and you need to return to consolidate your fight against the monster of corruption and to take us to the Next Level. I want to assure you that Aba and Abians and indeed all Igbos will massively vote for you,” the royal father told the President as he raised his hand and proclaimed him winner of the coming presidential poll.

The statement said that the second endorsement was by the secretary-general of apex-Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo,  Uche Okwukwu, who had earlier expressed a dissenting view from that of his chairman in expressing support for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the imminent elections.

“Okwukwu announced the adoption of President Buhari as the true Ohanaeze candidate who will be formally recognized as such at a coming event at the Aso Rock Villa.

“On his part, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, welcomed the existing “synergy” between the federal government and his state which he said, had come with enormous gains that are cherished by the government and the people.” he said.

  • Women, youth stage rally for Buhari’s reelection in Kwara

Scores of All Progressives Congress (APC) women and youth recently staged a peaceful rally in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital in support of President Muhammadu Buhari’s reelection.

The rally started around 9.30 am around the popular Post Office Round about in the metropolis and ended at the campaign office of a former APC governorship aspirant Isiak Kawu Modibbo in Sango area.

The procession affected human and vehicular traffic on the popular Muritala Mohammed way, as vehicles were forced to move at snail pace.

The rally was organised by Making A Different (MAD) for Kwara and Kawu Modibbo Group.

In his remark at the event, the state APC Chairman Hon Bashir Bolarinwa urged aggrieved members of the party to forget their grievances and work for the success of the party at polls.

Represented by his vice chairman Abdullahi Samari said “don’t sell your permanent voters’ cards to them. Your PVC is your power. If they bring money collect the money. After all it is our money. But don’t vote them.”

Hon Bolarinwa urged other aspirants of the party to emulate the gesture of Isiak Kawu Modibbo.

Speaking on behalf of the groups, wife of Mallam Modibbo Saadat said: “We are here today to mobilise youth and women in support of President Muhammadu Buhari is doing. He has been doing a great job in the country and we need to show people what he has been doing.

“The crowd that accompanied us from Post Office to this place is amazing. It is an assurance that Kwarans are ready for the reelection of President Buhari.

“We are also using this medium to empower some of our members. Kwara State is different from other states. We have been suffering for so long. People need to be empowered, that is why we are giving out some items to some people today.

“We resolved to show our members a specimen of what a voter’s card looks like so that they know how. In other words, we are embarking on voters’ education, so that they know how to vote on election.

“Kwarans are ready. We don’t need any message for them and it has started. We will not stop until election days.”

A youth leader, Abdulkarim Popoola, said the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice Prof Yemi Osinbajo is guaranteed.

“We are here to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari for his walking over in the forthcoming presidential election; because we are very sure that in Kwara state we are going to deliver for the state for him,” Popoola said.

“We are also assuring the whole world that President Buhari is coming back again. Four plus for is equaled to eight. That is the reason we organised this rally.”

  • General vs General

President Muhammadu Buhari and former President Olusegun Obasanjo last Tuesday displayed part of the military trainings they underwent during their military days.

They showed to all in the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa that they didn’t simply pick the title ‘General’ on the streets or bought it with money, but worked hard for it.

Part of the military training they received was not to let the enemy or opponent know their true feelings, ideas and plans at all times.

So, like other soldiers, they were trained in the art of deception, concealment, and misinformation or disinformation.

While deception in warfare have dated back to early history with great emphasis on tactics, in modern times, military deception has developed as a fully fledged doctrine.

Misinformation and visual deception were also said to have been employed during World War I, which gained greater prominence during the World War II.

World history also showed that the Allies executed one of the largest deceptions in military history, Operation Bodyguard, which helped them to achieve full tactical surprise in the buildup to the 1944 invasion of Normandy.

So over the years, soldiers worldwide have been applying  military deceptions in attempts to mislead enemy forces.

They engaged methods including creating or amplifying an artificial fog of war via psychological operations, information warfare, visual deception among other methods.

Tactical deception is engaged when an individual is able to use an “honest” act from his normal repertoire in a different context to mislead familiar individuals.

Strategic deception is an attempt to deceive an adversary, including possible spill-over effects of misleading the public at home, and the populace of one’s allies and friends.

Any enemy that falls for the deception will lose confidence when it is revealed and may hesitate when confronted with the truth.

So to stay top of the game, any good soldier must be skillful in deception, concealment and misinformation.

Despite leaving the military few years back as Generals, Buhari and Obasanjo were still able to bury their emotions and feelings before the commencement of the National Council of State meeting last Tuesday.

Like the saying goes, ‘old soldier never dies’, they pushed aside their hostilities as if nothing was at stake.

Staring at one another in smiles, they shook hands and exchanged pleasantries before the meeting started.

Photographers and cameramen in the hall didn’t waste any time to capture the moment as they clicked away.

But many political watchers however believed that the smiles were just for the cameras as great hostilities were deeply buried behind the smiles.

Especially, when the meeting was just two days after Obasanjo released his second time-bomb letter criticising Buhari.

Obasanjo, in the 16-page letter, two days earlier, accused Buhari of plot to rig the February Presidential election and also claimed that Buhari was already behaving like the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha.

The letter had stated in parts “Today, another Abacha Era is here. The security institutions are being misused to fight all critics and opponents of Buhari and to derail our fledgling democracy.

“EFCC, Police, and Code of Conduct Tribunal are also being equally misused to deal with those Buhari sees as enemies for criticising him or as those who may not do his bidding in manipulating the election results.

”I  am concerned as a democrat who believes that with faithful and diligent practice of democracy, we can overcome most of our political problems and move steadfastly and surefootedly on the course of stability, unity of purpose, socio-economic growth and progress for all.

“Democracy becomes a sham if elections are carried out by people who should be impartial and neutral umpires, but who show no integrity, acting with blatant partiality, duplicity and imbecility.

”For all Democrats and those carrying out the process of elections, there must be the red line that must not be crossed in tactics and practices of democracy.

”I personally have serious doubt about the present INEC’s integrity, impartiality and competence to conduct a fair, free and credible election. From what we saw and knew about Osun State gubernatorial election, what was conclusive was declared inconclusive despite all advice to the contrary.

”The unnecessary rerun, if viewed as a test-run for a larger general election, would lead people to expect incidences of deliberately contrived, broken or non-working voting machines or card readers, confusion of voters as to their voting stations, inadequate supply of voting materials to designated places, long line to discourage voters and turning blind eyes to favour the blue-eye political party of INEC because the Commission’s hands will be tied to enable hatchet men and women to perform their unwholesome assignment.

“The transmission and collation of results are subject to interference, manipulation and meddling.  If the INEC’s favourite political party wins with all the above infractions, the result will be conclusively declared and if not, there will be a ‘rerun’, the result of which is known before it is carried out”. He stated

Buhari’s media handlers also replied Obasanjo swiftly in a statement the same Sunday.

It stated “The sixteen-page letter the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari and released this afternoon is the last push by desperate politicians who can’t handle the President politically and have resorted to subterfuge.

“Our first message to the former President is that he needs a good doctor for good treatment and to say to him, “Get well soon.”

“As repeatedly said of him, since Chief Obasanjo left office in 1979, he never let every succeeding leader of the country function freely, and this included the one he personally handpicked against all known rules drawn up by the party that put him in the office of the President.

“But Chief Obasanjo is jealous because President Buhari has more esteem than him and the sooner he learns to respect him the better.

“It is a notorious fact that in dealing with any leader that he failed to control, he resorted to these puerile attacks. As the grand patron, more correctly the grandfather of corruption as described by the National Assembly, Chief Obasanjo released today’s letter purely for the reason of rescuing his thriving corruption establishment.

“The elections starting in February will be free and fair as promised the nation and the international community by President Buhari.

“What Chief Obasanjo and his co-travellers in the PDP should expect is that from the outcome, we will teach them a political lesson that they will never forget. This margin will be much bigger than we had in 2015.

“Claims that President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have embarked on the president’s “self- succession project, by recruiting collation officers who are already awarding results based on their projects to actualise the perpetuation agenda, in which the people will not matter and the votes will not count” is not only utterly false, but a copious note from the book on the failed third term agenda of President Obasanjo.

“A leader who took USD 16 billion “upfront” to supply electric power yet failed to add a single megawatt to the national grid and to date, there is no trace of the money is jittery that he will be called to account. He is a coward.

“Nigerians looked up to him as a role model and a ray of hope to ethical and clean leadership until President Yar’Adua called him out to explain what happened to the sixteen billion dollars of taxpayer’s money. It is clear that with him sitting on top of the heap of corruption, he is no different from the crowd he leads.

“This language of his 16-page letter, likening President Buhari to General Sani Abacha, a man he dreaded and the one who jailed him under military laws is most unfitting from a former President of Nigeria.

“We are unable to get the words to describe a 90-year old liar, except to say that by the publication of this tissue of lies against the President, he Obasanjo, not the President will fall from everyone’s esteem.” it stated

It is really hoped that the increasing political tension in the country will recede in the days ahead.

“President Buhari has listened when we made case for the dredging of Excravos river, today the contract for the dredging of Warri seaport and Koko port have been awarded and work gone far.

“The Koko Forshore contract awarded to someone in the state ruling PDP through NDDC was abandoned it until PMB came, now work have began, though in a slow pace.

  • Protest in Calabar over Onnoghen’s suspension

A group known as the “Concerned Cross Riverians on The Unconstitutional Suspension of the CJN” took to the streets to protest the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari, describing as unconstitutional.

They further demanded the immediate reinstatement of the Chief Justice of Nigeria with all his rights and privilege as the CJN.

They also vowed to vote out the All Progressives  Congress (APC), at all levels especially President Mohammadu Buhari, as according to them, there were are so many burning issues that needed attention more than the “illegal suspension” of the CJN but have not been attended to.

Reading a communiqué on behalf of the group a constitutional lawyer, Leo Anyogo, said the people of Cross River were dismayed by the development.

“Whereas the peace loving people of Cross River have always contributed freely and enormously to the growth and development of the Nigerian state; we recalled with dismay the foot dragging in the swearing of Justice Walter Onnoghen by President Buhari after due recommendation by the NJC and confirmation by the senate which after pressure and outcry, was subsequently sworn-in by the then Acting President and current Vice President Prof Yomi Osibanjo.

“It is with total shock and disbelief that President Buhari in clear violation of S.292 of the constitution and that of the court of Appeal purportedly suspended the CJN without due process. This is clearly an assault on the Sacred Temple of Justice.

“While we are in no way absolving the Honuorable Chief Justice of blame for any possible error, we insist that constitutionality and due process must be followed before his suspension or removal. We commend all those who are standing up for the defense of our constitution as we practice constitutional democracy with clear cut separation of Powers within the three Arms of Government.

“It is more shocking to the sensibilities of the state, perhaps due to her peaceful nature, to play politics with the illustrious CJN, who has merited that position by the provision of our Supreme Law,” he said.

“We hereby demand the immediate reinstatement of the Chief Justice of Nigeria with all his rights and Privileges as CJN as well as apologize to the Nigerian state and in particular Cross River for the attempted extra-constitutional and extra judicial removal of the CJN. There must be observance of due process and respect for the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in suspending or removing the CJN,” he read.

  • Pro and anti- Onnoghen protesters rock Abuja

Both pro and anti- Onnoghen protesters on Monday clashed at the National Secretariat of the Nigeria Bar Association(NBA) disrupting the planned meeting of the association aimed at taking a position in the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Street Urchins apparently hires to disrupt the meeting stormed the venue of meeting located in the central business district of Abuja made it almost impossible for those against the suspension to air their view as they continuously shouted Ba maso, Ba maso, Onnoghen must go among others.

For about three hours vehicular activities was disrupted by the protesters making it impossible for lawyers who were supposed to be part of the meeting to come for the meeting, while those who came for the meeting were seen hanging around discussing in low tone.

The handful of Security men deployed to keep the peace had a hectic time trying to control the urchins and prevent them from attacking the lawyers present, while some of them accused the media of taking side with the lawyers and not reporting their activities.

National Coordinator of the Advocacy for Civil Service and Justice, one of the groups protesting at the NBA secretariat, Giwa Victor said they were not against the prosecution of Justice Onnoghen but insisting that due process must be followed in handling the issue.

He said: “We are not saying that Justice Onnoghen is not corrupt, we are not saying that he should not be removed or prosecuted. What we are.saying is that due process should be followed and the petition against him should be sent to the NJC for action. There is no law in the land that vest the President with the power to suspend the CJN. Due process has to be followed”

Co-Conveners of the National Interest defenders, Ikenga Imo Ugochiyere who condemned the action of the President said the say marks the beginning of civil action by Nigerians to reclaim theircountry from the grip of thise who have treated “the constitution with disdain, our principles of Constitutional governance with scorn and our democratic ethos with contempt and derision.

He said It is shameful that President Muhammadu Buhari relied on and used a forged and fictitious Tribunal Order to purport to suspend the Chief Justice of Nigeria and appoint a factional Chief Justice while knowing that the Order was forged and fictitious.

He said: “Nigerians will recall that the Petition served on the Code of Conduct Bureau against the Chief Justice of Nigeria was received by the Bureau on the 9th January, 2019. The Purported Tribunal Order on which the President claimed he relied upon is also dated the same 9th January, 2019.

“The Motion on Notice seeking the same prayers as the Purported Motion Exparte is dated 10th January, 2019, the Charge filed was dated 10th January, 2019 while the statement of the Chief Justice of Nigeria in answer to the petition was on the 11th of January, 2011.

He accused the President of violating the constitution he swore to uphold, an action he said amounts to gross misconduct and it most certainly warrants his removal Of Office and asked the National Assembly to, as a matter of urgency, national importance and patriotism, commence without any delay the impeachment process of the President.

He called on the Nigerian Bar Association and the National Judicial Council NJC not to allow this impunity to stand, describing the swearing in of a factional CJN called Tanko Mohammed was an act of treason , the Tribunal order purportedly used was a forged document issued by Danladi Umar and backdated to even a date before the main charge was filed.

He said “the NJC and NBA must order the shutdown of the courts until the illegal suspension of the CJN is lifted and the impostor CJN justice Tanko Mohammed made to vacate the office. The NJC must expel Justice Tanko Mohammed from the bench for accepting an illegal appointment in violation of the constitution and the NJC rules of engagement, The NBA must direct lawyers to boycott the Code of Conduct Tribunal presided over by Danladi Umar until disciplinary action is served on Umar for issuing a fake order that paved the way for impunity.

“We however remind Justice Tanko Mohammed that he risks spending some time in jail as any attempt to parade himself as the factional CJN will be in contempt of a live and valid order of the Federal High Court and we shall not hesitate to proceed against him in contempt.

“The National Assembly should also immediately commence action for the removal from office of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Mr. Danladi Umar, who having criminal charges against him and still sits in office dumped Nigeria in a state of constitutional hiatus by criminally ordering the removal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“No provision in Sections 157 and 292 of the 1999 Constitution as amended supports the President in purporting to suspend the CJN or swearing in an acting CJN. The whole idea of a limited government is that the President’s powers is limited by law and it is ultra vires his powers to act in the absence of explicit legislative authorization. That is representative democracy at its best which our 1999 Constitution as amended guarantees.

  • Buhari storms South East again on Wednesday

President Muhammadu Buhari is returning to the South East on Wednesday, January 30 in furtherance of his presidential campaign in the zone.

Buhari is billed to storm Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital in what the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu said would be the most comprehensive of all the campaigns so far.

Buhari’s Wednesday visit to Ebonyi state would be the third since he became the Nigeria’s president.

Onu made the disclosures at the weekend when key officials of a pro-Buhari group, “True Nigerians For Buhari (TNFB)” paid him a solidarity visit in his country home at Uburu, Ohaozara Local council.

The minister enjoined all Ebonyi people, and indeed, the party supporters in the southeast zone to come out en mass and welcome President Muhammadu Buhari,  the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate as he flags off his campaign in Ebonyi State.

“Mr. President will be visiting Ebonyi State on Wednesday, January 30. I call on all Ebonyi to come out in very large number to receive Mr. President, and also come out en mass to vote for all APC candidates at all levels.

“We are happy that President Buhari is in love with our state. Mr. President insisted that the rail-line that links Port Harcourt to Maiduguri will not be complete without passing through Ebonyi State.“I call on the people of Ebonyi State, the southeast zone, and Nigerians to support President Buhari’s re-election,” Onu admonished.

Onu told the visiting members of the pro-Buhari grouo that although the problems which the Buhari-led administration inherited were enormous and would take a long time to solve, he expressed delight that within three years of being in office, the government had made tremendous progress in the areas of diversifying the economy from oil-dependent one to agro-based economy, creating jobs and consistent fight against corruption in the country.

He recalled that Buhari took over office “when all the indices of our national economy collapsed; when our economy depended mainly on crude oil; when the price of crude oil was very low and when the production of crude oil was very low in the country, not even up to half a million barrel per day; when what the country had was half of what she needed to have”

He expressed the hope that if given another four years, President Buhari would be able to consolidate on the gains made by the administration   so far. “We need to grow the economy and create enough jobs for our people,” Onu remarked.

He expressed happiness upon realizing that a group such as the TNFB members were currently working hard alongside other numerous organizations in the country for the re-election of Mr. President for him to continue with his good works.
