  • Defection: Tambuwal has become object of pity – Wamakko

Immediate past Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto North, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko has described Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as a subject of pity over his decision to dump the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wamakko in an interview with BBC Hausa monitored in Kaduna on Thursday however said that, contrary to insinuations that, he would be decamping alongside his percieved godson, Tambuwal, he is in APC solidly.

The Senator said, he remains in APC, and nothing can pull him out of the party, adding that people of sokoto are still together with President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the former Governor, people of Sokoto are with APC and President Muhammadu Buhari, and therefore APC will remain in government in Sokoto and its people will vote for President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said, “Politics is always full of surprised, but it is pitiable for a young man like him (Tambuwal) to be make such decision in life.”

“It has been long that people of Sokoto stopped running politics because particular persons are in it. And as a result of that, if someone quits and says he is leaving Buhari, that will be surprising and unfortunate.” He said.

Wamakko maintained that, the APC will still remain in government in sokoto and President Muhammadu Buhari will win election in the state.

“If I have any issues regarding repairs of APC, leaving the party is not the ideal thing, and that won’t show one knows what he is doing.

“Issues should be ironed out, truth be identified and be worked with. The people am representing in Sokoto are in support of Buhari and their loyalty to APC is intact, and as result of that I won’t disappoint my people.” Said Wamakko.

  • To unseat Buhari not an easy task, says Galadima

    …As coalition inaugurates steering committee

The chairman of the reformed- All Progressives Congress (R-APC), Alhaji Buba Galadima has warned that the task of unseating President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 would not be an easy task.

Galadima spoke in Abuja on Thursday during the unveiling of the secretariat of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) and the inauguration of the steering committee for the coalition.

Addressing a coalition of the 39 parties, Galadima urged the group to brace up for tough times ahead, saying that taking over power from a retired army general isn’t not a small task.

The rAPC chairman told the coalition group, being led by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to be prepared for harassment, intimidation and name calling as well as several other divisive tendencies.

Galadima said, “Trying to take over power from a retired military general is not a small task. It is a herculean task. But we will try. Over 200 million Nigerians out there are waiting for us. The masses of this country have since shifted their support from the ruling All Progress Congress (APC)

“They will attempt to intimidate, harass as well as bribe and divide us. They have called our people all sorts of names. They will still call several people more names.

“But we are not afraid of being arrested, intimidated or harassed by the EFCC and the ICPC. General Buhari will not be the president to be sworn in come May 29th, 2019”.

He charged those currently sitting on the fence to quickly join the coalition and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a free, fair, credible and transparent election in 2019.

According to him, Nigerians will not accept the repeat of what happened during the Ekiti State governorship election, which he said was rigged by the APC.

Also speaking at the event, the national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, decried what he described as the harassment of the leadership of the Senate.

Secondus said it was time for the coalition to rescue Nigeria from the “misgovernance”, which h said is typified by senseless killing of innocent Nigerians and harassment of opposition elements.

This National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief Olu Falae advised the coalition members to be wary of those who might want to do everything possible to split their ranks.

“We must be wary of those who will come to scatter us by trying to sow seeds of discord, spread fake news and adopt divisible measures to achieve their sinister motive”, Falae added.

He enjoined members to always cross check any information they get before believing or acting on it, saying such information  might be fake, as the stakes are very high.

A former Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Tom Ikimi, who also spoke at the event, said the coalition was borne out of the peculiar circumstances the nation finds itself at this time

Ikimi said, “The coalition is in the quest for a return to a virile and durable democratic process that will assure respect for civil liberties and human rights and to maintain a culture of sustained adherence to the rule of law.

“I confirm that there has not been a single crack in the alliance since its formation, despite unsavory attempts by our main opponents, who have deliberately or mischievously attempted to initiate or present nonexistent cracks in the alliance to the public.

“We have never claimed that all the 68 registered political parties in the country are members of the alliance. There are 39 parties who indicated interest in the alliance and 35 of them were available to endorse the document on the Inauguration.

“Since then the Democratic People’s Party (DPP) has joined the alliance and has also signed the document. None of the parties that signed the MOU has departed from the grand alliance”.

Besides the PDP, other parties in the coalition include the Action Alliance (AA); Alliance for Democracy (AD); Africa Democratic Party (ADC); Action Democratic Party (ADP); All Grand Alliance Party (AGAP); Action People’s Party (APP); Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD); and Better Nigeria Progressive Party (BNPP).

Others are the Democratic Alternative (DA); Democratic People’s Party (DPC); Grand Democratic Party of Nigeria (GDPN); Green Party of Nigeria (GPN); KOWA Party; Labour Party (LP); Mass Action Joint Alliance (MAJA); and Masses Movement of Nigeria (MMN).

Also in the group are the National Conscience Party (NCP); New Generation Party (NGP); National Unity Party (NUP); Nigeria Intervention Movement (NIM); People’s Alliance for National Development and Liberty (PANDEL); Peoples Progressive Party (PPP); People for Democratic Change (PDC); Providence People’s Congress (PPC); and the Reformed All Progressive Congress (RAPC).

Others are the Restoration Party of Nigeria (RPN); Social Democratic Party (SDP); Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN); All Grassroots Alliance (AGA); National Interest Party (NIP); Nigeria Democratic Congress Party (NDCP); Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA); and Young Democratic Party (YDP) among others.

  • People who wrecked our economy desperate to govern again – Amosun

Governor Ibikunle Amosun on Thursday rued the absence of conscience among some politicians in the country, saying it is only in Nigeria that people who only “wrecked the economy” yesterday, could have the “effrontery” to aspire to govern the country again.

Amosun said when the present All Progressives Congress (APC) controlled government at the centre came on board; things met on ground were so bad on all fronts but expressed the joy that President Muhammadu Buhari had laid a solid foundation for Nigeria and her economy.

The Governor who made this known in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, while addressing the seventh Quarterly Meeting of the Secretaries to the governments of the All Progressives Congress (APC) – controlled states, said in no distance time, the foundation being laid by Buhari would yield positive results to make the  people rejoice.

According to him, the Federal Government is focusing on enhancing policy implementation of programmes across the states.

While declaring the meeting open, he noted that it was first held in March, 2017 and remained the  brain – child of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), and had since  became  a veritable platform for peer reviews among the APC-led states.

“Since the inaugural Quarterly Meeting that in Lagos State on 16th and 17th March, 2017, the focus has been on the critical objective of facilitating the adoption and implementation of policy initiatives across all APC states in line with the social democratic philosophy of our great party,” he said.

The meeting, according to Amosun, is expected to  focus on setting enabling framework for implementation of PGF’s policy briefs on education, security , Internally-Generated Revenue and health sectors.

He expressed hope that the meeting would provide an opportunity for cross-fertilisation of  ideas and create synergies for improved and  workable solutions to the challenges of the sectors.

“It is my sincere belief that you, our guests, will have a few tips to take home from our success story here in Ogun.

“As you continue in your deliberations at this Meeting, I urge all of you to avail yourselves of the opportunity to share with one another lessons, ideas, experiences and challenges from our respective states,” he said.

A former Secretary to Ogun government, Sarafa Ishola, who attended the opening ceremony, described the roles of the SSGs as “pivotal” to their respective governments.

Ishola recalled that there was no such platform during his tenure, and urged the SSGs to ensure sustenance of the platform for the benefits of the APC- controlled states.

  • ‘2019: Three PDP governors to defect to APC’

The National Vice Chairman, North Central, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Suleiman Ahmed Wambai, has stated that that in the next three days about three PDP governors from the south east will join APC.

Wambai stated this on Thursday at the government house Lafia, during a party stakeholders meeting  where party members reaffirmed their commitment to the party in the state to ensure the return of president Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura, in his remarks urged the supporters of the party in the state to remain focused, assuring that come 2019 general election the APC in the state will lead other states in the country to ensure victory for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Those in attendance include Senator Abdullahi Adamu and all the members of the National Assembly of APC from the state, all governorship aspirants under the APC, all members of the state assembly of APC and top government officials.

He appreciated members of the party in the state and at the national assembly for standing by President Buhari despite the many challenges.

In their various remarks they all vowed to stand by President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure he is re-elected in 2019, adding that the APC will deliver Buhari in the north central Nigeria despite the exit of Benue and Kwara states from the party.

Also speaking, Senator Abdullahi Adamu said those who defected from the party have seen their failures in the party, adding that the APC is battle ready for them.

  • Groups stage rally in support of Buhari

    Rail against Saraki, Ahmed

Scores of people under the platforms of Kwara Liberation Group, Save Kwara group and former members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday marched some major roads in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital drumming support for President Muhammadu Buhari.

The groups also solicited for good governance and leadership in the state.

The peaceful rally, tagged a mega rally of 300,000 Kwarans in three Kilometres, three hours, three minutes and three seconds, was aimed at mobilizing people to effect what they described  as needed change from current situation in the state to a progressive change.

Members of the group took the rally from popular Gerin Alimi roundabout through major roads such as Lagos, Surulere/Oja Oba, Emir’s and terminated it at the Post Office area of the metropolis.

A former chieftain of the PDP, who said he has dumped the party for APC, Dr Abdulganiyu Abdulbeki said: “Today’s rally is intended to send message to all Kwarans that the time has come to make what is called real change. We belong to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP until Wednesday. You are all aware by the imposition of the PDP national that people should come and invade our residence and take over a percentage that is not normal. What we are saying is that we cannot stay in the same party with those they have sent to us.

“I am here representing all those you know in the former PDP. All other leaders are in Abuja meeting with the APC leadership. We are now fully in APC. 98 percent of the former PDP in Kwara have moved to APC. We are fully for President Muhammadu Buhari. Initially we were for Buhari but we could not say it openly because someday ‘invading’ us was there. We are informing the whole Kwarans to relax as they still have a platform to express their interest. PDP members have moved en masse to APC. We are going to do our Kwara agenda soon. Those you are expected to make changes in our lives are now in APC. We are for Buhari all along. We know his anti-corruption stance and we are for that. We will not condone corruption.”

Also speaking, chairman of the organization, Dr. Amuda Aluko, a member of the defunct National Reconciliation Committee (NARECO), said that the people had for long been deprived and denied basic benefits expected from a functional representative government who enjoyed goodwill of the people to get to power.

The elder statesman, who solicited support and cooperation of the people to the movement and others in the search for development of the state, said that, “we are closed to the promised land.

“We should collectively put a stop to the unholy use of both our capital and human resources to a more meaningful and masses oriented options”.

Secretary, Save Kwara Group, John Adegboye said that the essence of the rally is to let the whole world know that the state political landscape has changed

Said Adegboye: “We are now more enlightened. We are more exposed and sound in what we want. The political sphere of the state has been turned into hegemonic, dynastic kind of thing. That has been stunting the state’s progress and development. We want a complete overhaul of the political system of the state.

“Kwara is going to 52 years. Majority of the states that started 20, 30 years after the state are beginning to catch up with us. Some have even overtaken us.

“I was speechless when I happened to travel to Gigawa state based on the kind of development that has taken place there. These are the things that made us to come together to sensitise people on the way we can change governance to what we want.

“And that is for us to own the electoral process. We are now saying that people should go and get registered and get their permanent voters cards. They vote and also develop their votes.

“For the point of emphasis, we are saying that Kwara state does not belong to Bukola Saraki. We are saying enough is enough. We are saying it is unacceptable for only one person to negotiate the future of three million people. It is an offence. It is criminal.

“This rally is pro-good governance and if it means we are anti Bukola Saraki and Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed so be it.”

  • ‘Saraki’s Senate Presidency slowed down government’

…Says Saraki has been in opposition in the last three years

The Presidency on Wednesday blamed the slow pace of development in the country on the National Assembly led by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Briefing State House correspondents at the end of Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, said that he has operated as being part of the opposition party right from day one as Senate President.

He said that Saraki has been in the opposition in the past three years.

According to him, the series of Federal budget passage delays and delays in confirming appointments sent to the National Assembly have worked against development in the country.

He said that Saraki’s leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) was a welcome development.

  • Review Nigeria’s security, social structure, ex-envoys urge Buhari

The Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria (ARCAN) has tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently review the country’s social and security structure as a way to check rising insecurity.

ARCAN prescribed state police, redesigning of cattle routes, ranching, implementation of voluntary surrender of weapons programme and recruitment and equipping of military personnel, among others, as solutions to the problem.

The former envoys gave the advice in a July 15 memorandum titled ‘Current security situation in Nigeria, its implications for the country’s external relations and the way forward’, signed by ARCAN President, Dr Oladapo Fafowora

The memorandum, made available to The Nation, said the diplomats were “deeply concerned” about the security situation in the country and highlighted a connection between the domestic environment and Nigeria’s foreign policy.

ARCAN stated that it was convinced that a vibrant foreign policy that delivers on the mandate of protecting the country’s national interest in line with Section 19 of the l999 Constitution must be anchored on a sound, safe, secure and prosperous domestic policy.

It said: “It is against the foregoing background and consistent with its goals and objectives that ARCAN is deeply concerned about the current security situation in Nigeria, especially the spate of killings arising from the herders/farmers conflict, communal clashes as well as from other incidents of insecurity in various parts of the country.

“The proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW), made possible by Nigeria’s porous borders and weak customs control, especially at the land and sea borders, have also fuelled the deplorable situation.

“The ease and speed at which Nigerians are quick to take up arms against their neighbours and fellow citizens is saddening, thereby calling into question the country’s collective commitment to peaceful co-existence irrespective of ethnicity, tribe, religion and other differences.

“Similarly, the persistence of ethnic agitations and tensions in some parts of the country has been further accentuated by yellow, sensational journalism and the use of the social media to spread fake news.”

The association also noted that the attacks against farmers, including cattle-rustling in some parts of the country, portend great risks to the country’s food security.

ARCAN thanked the Federal Government for containing the Boko Haram insurgency among other security efforts, but it lamented that the measures had “not been effective in curtailing the spate of killings in different parts of the country.

“ARCAN therefore calls on the Federal Government to urgently bring to an end these killings in consonance with both its obligations under the Constitution and international law.”

It warned that the current security situation has serious implications for Nigeria’s external relations, and foreign policy, with negative impact on the country’s image abroad.

ARCAN said: “The perception that the country is unstable and seemingly at war with itself gives the impression to the outside world that the country is not in effective control of its internal affairs.

“This is capable of serving as a disincentive to foreign investors and Nigeria’s development partners. It is also capable of eroding Nigeria’s leadership role and aspirations, not just in the West African sub-region, but also in Africa and the world at large. Equally, the situation cannot earn Nigeria the respect of the international community which is likely to view the country and its citizens in their midst with scorn.”

The ex-envoys warned the President that the prevailing insecurity “depicts government as being unable or unwilling to protect its citizens, which may trigger the principle of Responsibility to Protect and unfavourable consideration by the United Nations Human Rights Council and the Security Council.

“For a country with a great reputation for peace-making and peace-keeping in various parts of the world, the thoughts of the international community contemplating enforcement or other actions against Nigeria are undesirable outcomes that must be avoided through adroit diplomacy and a greater commitment to effective actions by government.”

Nevertheless, it urged the government to stay focused while searching for solutions. It should, ARCAN added, eschew ethnic, religious and political influence and interference.

“Government should evolve a comprehensive programme and effective mechanisms to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians, and the resolution of communal conflicts, including equitable access to land, water, grazing and other resources, to mitigate the devastating impact of climate change as well as take into urgent consideration other factors considered as the immediate or remote causes of the killings.”

Furthermore, the association proposed immediate, short-term and long-term measures to salvage the situation.

The mechanisms, it noted, should include, “Arrest and diligent prosecution of suspected perpetrators of the killings and arsons, including their sponsors and supporters, no matter how highly-placed.

“Sustained dialogue and discussion between the Presidency and the National Assembly in the search for solutions and the implementation of agreed strategies to deal with conflicts.”

The association warned politicians, government officials and religious leaders against inciting tension and hatred among Nigerians.

It also called for the “immediate repeal of the Firearms Act of 1959 to bring it up to speed with the current realities regarding the proliferation of small and light weapons as well as the upgrading of the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons to a full-fledged Commission (NATCOM) in line with the provisions of the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) (2006), to serve as the institutional and legal framework for the disarmament programme.

“Embark on a comprehensive and sustained programme of disarmament and voluntary surrender of the illicit arms and their destruction to mop up the estimated over 300 million small arms and light weapons in the hands of non-state actors with which most of the killings have been perpetrated across Nigeria.”

The police, it recommended, should be expanded toward achieving the UN recommendations of one policeman to 400 citizens “as against Nigeria’s dismal current ratio of one policeman to over 800 people. The size of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps should also be similarly increased to complement the work of the Police and other security forces.”

According to the envoys, state police, with effective checks and balances to prevent abuse, is a necessity, while there should “continuous engagement with religious institutions and leaders, as has been done by other countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, US and the UK, among others, to dissuade them from the use of religion, inflammatory sermons and hate speeches to cause disunity and conflict in the country.”

ARCAN added: “To enhance the primary role of the Armed Forces, there is the need to increase the size of our military and equip them with sophisticated arms and modern equipment… The Nigerian military appears currently over-stretched with peace support operations in over 30 States of the Federation in duties that should ordinarily be carried out by the Police and Civil Defence Corps.

“The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) IN Kaduna should also be revitalised to produce most of the much-needed weapons so as to enhance self-reliance in armaments.”

  • N-Power: Bello commends FG for recruiting Kogi indigenes

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi  has commended the Federal Government for recruiting  7,425 unemployed graduates from the state into the second batch of  the N-Power programme.

Bello,  in a statement in Lokoja on Tuesday, said that the programme had  given hope to the beneficiaries who were selected on merit from the 21 local government councils  of the state.

According to him, the recruitment of the unemployed graduates into the scheme was timely and a relief to the beneficiaries as many of them had  been jobless   for years.

Those selected were mostly from indigent  background,  the governor said in the statement signed by Adoga Ibrahim, the Coordinator of the N-Power programme in the state.

Bello also commended President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for the introduction of the N-Power scheme under which beneficiaries are entitled to  a N30,000 stipend per month.

He re-affirmed the support of the people and government of Kogi State for the president.

“  We will work to strengthen the effort of the President Buhari led-administration by ensuring that the beneficiaries are deployed to critical areas that will impact on the development of the state,” Bello was quoted as saying.

He urged the beneficiaries to give their best services to the nation and refrain from any form of misconduct.

  • Buhari not behind moves to remove Ortom – Presidency

The Presidency on Tuesday denied the allegation that President Muhammadu Buhari is behind moves by some Benue State lawmakers towards unseating the state governor, Samuel Ortom.

A statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, said that President Buhari will never be part of any unconditionally act.

He said “Even while attending the ECOWAS/ECCAS Summit in Togo, strident attempts were being made to drag President Muhammadu Buhari into the unfolding drama between the executive and the legislature in Benue State.

“Statements have been issued by different interest groups, insinuating that the President may have a hand in the development in Benue.

“This is paranoia at its worst, coming from people who have wittingly positioned themselves against the clean-up of the country, and the way we do things. They prefer business as usual.

“President Buhari will never be part of any unconstitutional act, and any attempt to link him with the inglorious past, when minority number of lawmakers impeached governors, will not stick.

“It will simply be like water off the duck’s back. Those with open minds know this, but those who cavil would rather source everything untoward to the President. It is murky ground in which they are now marooned, as fallout of their resistance to change in the country.

According to him, they only preach separation of powers and true federalism whenever it suits them, while also calling on the President to interfere brazenly in affairs at state level.

President Buhari, he said, will always stand by all that is noble and fair, and will reject attempts to drag him into infamy.

“People who stoke fires by deliberate acts of omission or commission, and then summon the President to come and put it out will find that this President will be guided by the Constitution at all times, no matter the attempt to entangle him in unwarranted controversies.” he said
