  • Buhari’s hat in the ring

It was a good development last week Monday that President Muhammadu Buhari decided to end the suspense that hung over Nigeria in the past few months. He chose the National Executive Committee meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held in Abuja that Monday to declare his intention to run for the 2019 presidential election.

That declaration has definitely kickstarted other underground and open activities by other interested parties who are aiming to also win the 2019 presidential election.

As a reason for declaring his intention last week Monday, the President said, ”I declared before leaving home because Nigerians were talking too much about whether I would run or not.

“So, I felt I should break the ice. We have many things to focus on, like security, agriculture, economy, anti-corruption, and many others. We needed to concentrate on them, and politics should not be a distraction.

“The majority of Nigerians appreciate what we are doing, and that is why I am re-contesting.” he said

The President decided to take  the bull by the horn and ignore the advice of some former leaders including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

They felt that Buhari should not seek reelection in order to allow younger Nigerians with fresher ideas to rule the country.

While these leaders and others Nigerians kicked against Buhari’s emergence in 2019, it was reported that Buhari’s declaration to seek reelection was welcomed by many Nigerians across the country, especially in the North.

Welcoming the President’s decision, Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, said, ”We are fully in support of his decision and its part of democratic culture, traditionally the president has the right of first refusal of the candidature of their party, so its not something that is unusual or unwarranted or unconstitutional he has done the right thing, he is going to contest and we are solidly behind him.

“He is not under any obligation to consult governors or anybody, he has been under tremendous pressure to make that pronouncement so we should heave a sigh of relief since he has finally announced his intention to contest.

“We will give him the kind of support we gave him in 2015,” the governor stated

Assuring that the declaration will not distract government, the governor said, “Certainly it is not distracting government, it will even calm down governance so that people will concentrate on the real act of governance and deliver the dividends of democracy.

“Certainly, he is the single kinetic president in Nigeria’s political life till date,” he said

Apart from youths in Kano State jubilating Buhari’s declaration, the state government has also welcomed the decision by President Buhari to re-contest election in 2019.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information, Youth and Culture in the state, Malam Muhammad Garba, had maintained that the second term tenure of President Buhari will ensure the consolidation of the achievements recorded in nearly three years of the administration in the area of economic growth, security, fight against corruption, transparency in government .

He also noted that Nigeria has gotten out of recession, higher level of transparency in government has ensured foreign investments, the administration’s zero tolerance for corruption coupled with its holistic approach to fighting insurgency has boosted the country’s image in the international community.

As the strongest support base of the President, he said that the good people and the administration of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in Kano state will ensure the success of Buhari at the polls to consolidate the gains so far made.

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, in a statement by his media aide Kingsley Fanwo, said, “I am a staunch supporter of Mr. President and I am proud to be associated with such a great leader and personality.

“We thank Mr. President for listening to the voices of Nigerians who are satisfied with his performance. Kogi people were the first to organise rallies in different towns and cities to call on Mr. President to seek re-election.

“As the leader of the state, I wish to assure Mr. President that my people are solidly behind his policies of economic recovery, security and the fight against corruption. Kogi will deliver to Mr President, more votes than the state gave in 2015.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has not lost his magic touch. He is a trusted leader who the masses want as their President beyond 2019. But it is also instructive for us to know that corruption will begin to fight back with renewed vigor to stop the march of the masses. We shall triumph.

“Today’s declaration of Mr President for second term has further reinvigorated our belief that he will continue to make sacrifices for the greatness of our nation.” he stated

Niger State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, in a statement by his Media/Publicity Coordinator, Jide Orintunsin, said “It is heart-warming that Mr. President today told members of the NEC of his intention to seek re-election. This is the brightest moment for our country. It’s a moment that has rekindled the hope of our people.

“A moment that has reaffirmed that all the good works, the good initiatives of the President that saw us out of economic recession the country was plunged into by mismanagement of past administration will now be sustained to take us to the desired enviable position among the comity of nations.

“The President has exhibited high sense of good leadership. He has shown that he listens to the yearnings of millions of Nigerians who called on him to continue the good work he started since 2015.

“The onus is now on all good and well-meaning Nigerians to rally round our President and ensure that the reactionary forces of the opposition and agents of doom are not allowed to dash the much cherish hope we all have in the emerging Nigeria by doing the needful during the next general election.

“We cannot afford to go back to the dark days of extravagance and impunity. President Buhari has changed the game. He has brought sanity to governance. The war against insurgency is nearing logical conclusion and our economy is improving.

“Posterity will not forgive us as a people if we allow this golden opportunity to slip off our hands. Mr. President has declared. We have to do the needful as a people by supporting him.” he said

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, in a statement by his media aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, said “The declaration of the President to go for a second tenure would also go a long way to reduce the noise of the opposition and take care of the idiosyncrasies of certain elements in the system.

“Those who had wanted to blackmail him out of going for another term can now find other meaningful things to keep themselves busy.

“The President would largely garner more votes in 2019 than he had done in 2015 because most Nigerians, including people of the Southeast have seen that he meant well for the nation and the citizenry.

“The APC has no apology to make because it has done wonderfully well, considering the magnitude of the rot it met on ground in 2015.

“The antenna of the opposition in the country will finally be lowered when the campaigns begin and the party will be showing Nigerians its achievements in the states under its control and at the Federal level.

“When a political party had admitted that the government it ran was a huge failure and then apologised, such scenario goes with restitution and not with reward.” he added

Now that the momentum is gathering towards 2019 elections, it is really hoped that Nigerians will really get value for money for the remaining one year of the current administration.

The coming political campaigns, either by the ruling party or other interested parties, should not be hindrance to socio-economic development of the nation for the next twelve months.

It is the expectations of many well-meaning Nigerians that substantial part of the change promised by the current administration would have been achieved by middle of next year.

Saul has slain his thousands and David his tens of thousands –  1 Samuel  8: 7

This biblical quote (above) epitomizes the subversive praise of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, as he acted for ill President Muhammadu Buhari, in those testy times of the administration.

Tiny David had just slain Giant Goliath, the Philistinian.  Sensation-craving Israelites, like present-day Nigerians, just went berserk!

But that was subversive in King Saul’s troubled ears, and the resultant David-induced paranoia would prove fatal for the eventually ousted king; and near-fatal for the young man, David, himself.

Like the Jews of old, many aNigerian just yakked, with impressive innocence, at the great vice-presidential strides — no crime.

But with some spiteful lobbies, that praise was a deliberate ploy, to goad Prof. Osinbajo into new vanity, and put a wedge between him and the president.

That would have re-played the ugly Obasanjo-Atiku presidential feud, that all but crippled their second term (2003-2007).

Was Osinbajo taken in by all the razzmatazz, friendly or fiendish?  If he was, he didn’t show it.

Besides, watching President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo at the 10th Bola Tinubu colloquium in Lagos on March 29, the body language was clear: neither Saul nor David; absolutely no vanity or paranoia — just one seamless, self-reinforcing “kingdom”, primed for, in Jeremy Bentham-speak, the greatest happiness of the greatest number.

Indeed, the duo would appear the political equivalent of another famous scriptural quip: Paul planting, Apollo watering, grace sprouting!

At that colloquium, Osinbajo-in-Buhari established a clear nexus between fighting corruption and freeing hitherto stolen resources for human development — and gave logical reasons why folks must continue to talk about it.

Geez, could leadership be so simple and unobtrusive, when not poisoned by empty conceit and tragic ego; and when the thrust is the people’s welfare, not the crust of personal glory and solo riches?

Perhaps if President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice President Atiku Abubakar had struck such a working ethos and work chemistry; and if both were perceived non-venal and as clean as the whistle, the decayed polity wouldn’t have logically metastasized under President Goodluck Jonathan, which made the Buhari Presidency such an imperative.

That returns the subject to the nexus between corruption and crippling under-development, with its attendant mass poverty.

Prof. Osinbajo made a graphic and telling point, citing the Jonathan-era  ”strategic alliance” heist at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), from which Nigeria allegedly lost US $3 billion (about one trillion Naira).

From the equivalent of that trove, allegedly pocketed by the thieving lobbies that cut the deal, the Buhari presidency is now proposing to fix the following ongoing crucial roads nationwide: Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road, 2nd Niger Bridge (which a NAN source says is now over 40 per cent completed), Enugu-Port Harcourt road, East-West road, Sagamu-Ore-Benin road (though in all fairness the Jonathan government fixed a stretch of that road), Kano-Maiduguri road, Abuja-Lafia-Akwanga-Keffi road, and the old Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, passing through Ota-Ifo-Wasimi, all in Ogun State.

But the occasion was not really for physical infrastructure, which stats nevertheless the vee-pee’s speech ran through.  It was rather to showcase the Buhari government’s comprehensive investment in social infrastructure, despite depleting resources.  That policy is driven by the Vice President.

The theme, “Investing in the people”,  was therefore a vivid feedback on the state of the Buhari social safety net programmes, to a select gathering, with the president himself in-situ.

Personal testimonies, which often pushed the house into a frenzy, underscored how those social infrastructural stats had positively impacted on citizens — the lowly, the vulnerable, the disinherited and the abandoned, for whom “government” had for too long been nothing but a loud abstraction.

The social investments are captured under a quad of programmes, being implemented concurrently: Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) with the street lingo of “market moni”, the N-Power Programme, split between graduate volunteers and trainees, all aimed at stemming high unemployment and the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP), which beneficiary testimonies sent the hall thundering with cheers.

CCT — of N5,000 monthly — is for the society’s poorest and most vulnerable.  It is a classic welfare state’s direct intervention in cash; and it is on in 21 states so far (with the remaining 16 waiting to follow, if you add the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja).

Thus far, 297, 973 households, harbouring 1, 033, 294 Nigerians are current beneficiaries, according to Dr. Temitope Sinkaye, the national coordinator of the programme.

GEEP is in the realm of entrepreneurship, driven by a hub of trade cooperatives.

Of GEEP, Mrs Toyin Adeniji, its coordinator quipped: “GEEP is the largest and most ambitious microcredit scheme in the history of Nigeria, providing interest-free loans of N50, 000 to N250, 000 to over 300, 000 Nigerian micro-enterprises (market women, traders, artisans, youths and farmers).  It is a direct effort of the Federal Government to break the multi-decade jinx of economic growth without shared prosperity at the base of the pyramid.”

A couple of “market moni” beneficiaries were also there to testify to its impact on their business bottom line.

The most graphic testimonial of the day came from the NHGSFP, the school feeding programme, with one of the beneficiary pupils, a girl from Akwa Ibom, cooing “O, my God! O, my God!”, to show her relish for the daily menu, again sending the house into a rapture.

As at February 2018, 7, 487, 441 pupils in 22 states have been beneficiaries, 75, 333 cooks have reportedly been empowered and 26 states “have completed food safety and hygiene training, as well as medical screening for cooks.”

But the most telling, in terms of tactics and strategy against joblessness, would appear the N-Power Programmes.  N-Power volunteers, with a stipend of N30, 000 a month, are an immediate counter to graduate unemployment.  N-Power volunteers are integrated, as quality manpower, into CCT, GEEP and NHGSFP.

N-Power training, code-named “N-Power Build”, is a strategic programme to train top-notch artisans, in seven key areas: automobile, carpentry and joinery, welding and fabrication, electrical installation, masonry, plumbing and pipe-fitting, and painting and decoration, vital areas where current skills levels are at best sloppy.

A corollary, N-Power Junior, is being grafted into the regular school system to target young Nigerians from ages 6 to 18 in skills like coding and computer programming, computer hardware repairs; and 2D and 3D animations, including scriptwriting for films.

As the Vice President proudly rendered his account, in front of his beaming and cheering principal, something was crystal clear.

If the Nigerian top two had always reinforced themselves, in integrity and brilliance, our country would never have been in this hole.

It’s all about value-laden leadership.  That is the sane path to tread.

  • 2019: Nwosu will win, Okorocha assures APC supporters

    …I have retired all godfathers

Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, has assured the supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that his Chief of Staff, Uche Nwosu has what it takes to win the 2019 governorship election.

The Imo governor disclosed that his support for Nwosu’s governorship ambition is not for any personal gain but but the conviction that he will make a good governor, judging by his acceptability, which he said cuts across the three zones of the state.

Okorocha who spoke when political leaders, women and youth groups, as well as traditional rulers came to endorse Nwosu at the Government House, said that he would want to hand over to a governor that will discriminate against any zone but will see the entire state as one deserving of equal attention.

He assured that Nwosu will win the 2019 governorship election,  irrespective of the objections of the political ‘bigwigs’,  adding that the power to elect a governor resides with the people and not few political elites and godfathers, adding that,  “I have no doubt that Nwosu will win the governorship election considering his pedigree and humble background” .

According to the governor, “Nwosu has learnt the ropes and is better qualified than any other aspirant. Nwosu is the least of the political children I have trained but I don’t know any of them as much as I have known Nwosu, I took him up when he was just nobody and he  grew to the height he is now, his only sin is that he is my son-in-law, how about the Njemanze’s, the Bishops from Egbu, they occupy every position in Egbu without considering who and where they came from”

He continued that,  “Nwosu will win in 2019, don’t be afraid , I am there, I have retired the Arthur Nzeribes, the Udenwas, now I will retire the rest of them finally, I know them and they know me, their plan is to push me so that they can get the Senate, it’s a lie, i will run for the Senate as well”.

Speaking on President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration for a second term, Governor Okorocha assured that “he will win again, just like he did in 2015”.

He said,  “Buhari will win again and again, after Buhari, the turn will come to South East and it will be the turn of Okorocha”

  • Ogoni Clean-Up: FG commences free medical outreach

As part of process to clean-up of Ogoniland oil spill, the Federal Government has commenced phase two of its free medical outreach programme.

The implementing office, Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) stated that large number of residents, who had agonized for years under painful but treatable ailments, got medical attention during first phase of the project.

Speaking at the event flag-off, HYPREP Project Coordinator of, Dr. Marvin Dekil, stated that the success recorded during the first phase got attention of President Muhammadu Buhari, who then approved implementation of the second phase.

He noted that the residents lack good medical care while others were too impoverished to attend to their medical needs.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Environment, Sagir Mohammed, HYPREP will soon launch Livelihoods Intervention Programme to offer entrepreneurial skills to Ogoni women and youths, to enable them create wealth for themselves, families and the communities.

Dekil emphasized the importance of the second edition of the HYPREP health outreach programme, stressing that it precedes the remediation of impacted sites.

“Presently, the publication for invitation for pre-qualification of contractors for remediation of hydrocarbon impacted sites in Ogoniland is in some national and international dailies. The exercise will be the culmination of all the processes we have put in place right from the inception of the Project Coordination Office in March, 2017”, he stated.

He assured that, “the remediation of Ogoniland will be done only by experienced and best hands locally and internationally so as to achieve the desired results of restoring the environment back to an acceptable standard”.

Dekil noted that while medical outreach is on-going, plans were underway for the provision of potable water through the reconstruction of existing water facilities in the land and the construction of new ones to fill the supply gaps in the communities.

This he explained were part of deliberate efforts by the federal government to implement another key recommendation of the UNEP Report which is the restoration of livelihoods in impacted communities whose sources of living were affected by hydrocarbon pollution.

  • 2019: Igbos will benefit more under Buhari – APC

Chief Uche Ogar, a former governorship candidate under the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Abia State says that Igbos will benefit more under President Muhammadu Buhari if he emerges in 2019.

Ogar told our reporters in Enugu on Saturday in Enugu that the president had revived some projects abandoned by the immediate past administration in the South East zone.

According to him, President Buhari’s declaration for presidency in 2019 is good news especially for Igbos.

“What he has done in the South East zone is quite remarkable despite the fact that we did not support him in 2015.

“He gave us substantive ministers, Enugu-Onitsha and Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressways are all under construction including the 2nd Niger Bridge in Onitsha.

“Most importantly, his emergence will give the zone the opportunity to produce the President in 2023,” he said.

“We hear constantly about wars and rumours of war around the world. Our world is in trouble and the United Nations as a body is helpless in the face of it all.

“I believe it will require reconciliation between man and his maker to bring or enthrone peace on earth.

“For every child of God, peace is our vocation. Let us, therefore, do all in our power to live and make peace. Let us apply the dictum of `Live and let live,’’ he said.

  • Cleric chides Buhari over Gadaffi statement

The Bishop of Methodist Church of Nigeria, Lagos Mainland Diocese, Rt Rev. (Dr) Ayo Olawuyi, has berated President Muhammadu Buhari over his statement that links the late Libyan president Muammar Gadaffi with the rampaging killers herdsmen in some parts of Nigeria.

He spoke to press men in Lagos yesterday during the Diocese’s 24th Annual Synod.

The cleric said the statement of President Buhari that the gunmmen trained by late Gadaffi migrated to Nigeria after Gadaffi’s death, is not tenable.

President Buhari during the week while playing host to the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby in Abuja House London, linked the killer herdsmen with gunmen trained by Muammar Gadaffi.

Olawuyi said the president has implicated himself that he cannot provide security for his citizens as a Chief Security Officer by allowing senseless killings in his country.

Speaking on the theme of the synod, ‘Strive for Peace and Holiness’, the cleric urged Nigerians to embrace peace and tolerance with others which he described as excense of human existence that guarantees unity and progress.

The cleric said the self-defence call made by a former minister of Defence, Gen. T Y Danjuma, is not wrong provided such self-defence does not lead to taking another person’s life.

He tasked Nigerians to defend themselves with intelligence, constitution and through the court of law, the sanctity of which must not be compromised for selfish gain.

“I don’t understand what the president was saying, as a Chief Security Officer of Nigeria, why is this unnecessary killings happening in his country? Why should our borders be left porous, where are the immigration officials?”

“Looking at all sorts of evils happening in our land, the insurgence in the north east, the roving killer herdsmen, kidnapping and even corruption that has been a big monster in Nigeria, the theme for this synod has to be raised”.

“The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom, people  should begin to live the lives that pleased God. If we fear God, we will run away from all appearances of evil like corruption, shedding of innocent blood, self centredness and our leaders will not feel that Nigeria is in their possession”, he preached.

  • Chibok girls won’t be abandoned – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has reassured the parents of the school girls that were abducted from Government Girls Secondary School Chibok, Borno State, that “their daughters will never be forgotten or abandoned to their fate, despite four long years since they were taken away by terrorists.’’

President Buhari, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, joined the Borno State government, parents of the children and Nigerians in commemorating the fourth anniversary of the sad incident

He prayed that the event at the daughters’ school today will go well.

The President urged the parents to keep their hopes alive on the return of their daughters, noting that the recovery  of more than a 100 of the girls that were kidnapped through the Federal Government’s determined effort should give confidence that all “hope is not lost”.

He re-affirmed that the government remains focused and determined to see the girls return to their homes, urging the parents to be expectant of more good news in due course.

“We are concerned and aware that it is taking long to bring the rest of our daughters back home, but be assured that this administration is doing its very best to free the girls from their captors.

“Unfortunately, the negotiations between the government and Boko Haram suffered some unexpected setbacks, owing mainly to a lack of agreement among their abductors, whose internal differences have led to a divergence of voices regarding the outcome of the talks. We know that this is not the news parents want to hear after four whole years of waiting, but we want to be as honest as possible with you.

“However, this government is not relenting. We will continue to persist, and the parents should please not give up. Don’t give up hope of seeing our daughters back home again. Don’t lose faith in this government’s ability to fulfill our promise of reuniting you with our daughters.

“Don’t imagine for a moment that we have forgotten about our daughters or that we consider their freedom a lost course,’’ the President said.

President Buhari assured that as long as he remains the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces the Chibok girls will never be forgotten and all will be done to have them reunited with their families.
