We’ll move Nigeria forward as quickly as possible, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians in the diaspora of his administration’s determination to move the country forward as rapidly as possible.

He spoke at an audience on Saturday in Washington with a group of Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in various professions in the United States.

President Buhari said that the present administration is fully committed to correcting the errors that have hindered Nigeria’s progress as a nation.

Buhari, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said: “We are determined to get things done properly this time and God willing, we shall succeed.

“We are working diligently to correct our mistakes as a nation. We will rehabilitate and expand national infrastructure, and move forward as quickly as possible,” the President assured the group.

He also said that his administration will maintain contacts with Nigerian professionals in the diaspora and see how they can be best placed to contribute effectively to national development if they choose to come back home.

The President congratulated the five Nigerians he met with for their exceptional accomplishments, saying that he was very proud of them all.

The Nigerians received by President Buhari included Prof. Austin Esogbue, the only African to have served on the board of the United States’ National Aeronautical Space Agency.

Others were Jelani Aliyu, a leading car designer with General Motors, Prof. Nwadiuto Esiobu, a renowned Microbiologist and Biochemist, Dr. Yemi Badero, an Assistant Professor of Medicine and 13-year old Zuriel Oduwole who has interviewed 18 world leaders.

  • Fed Govt to reduce food importation, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the Federal Government is determined to significantly reduce the very high bill for importation of food products to Nigeria.

He made the remark at a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mr. Lars Rasmussen, in Washington DC.

A statement issued on Saturday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said that President Buhari also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the rapid diversification of Nigeria’s economy.

He said: “We developed a mono-product economy and lost opportunities to diversify in the past.

“We have great potentials for agriculture and solid minerals. We are now determined to exploit them to the fullest. Addressing the past neglect of these two sectors will help to reduce unemployment and make us a more productive country.

“We will welcome more investment in our agriculture and solid minerals sectors from countries with expertise in the two sectors. We abandoned them for petroleum. Now, we have to go back.

“Our bill for the importation of food and dairy products is very high. We want to cut it as much as possible by developing our local potentials,” the President told Mr. Rasmussen.

He assured the Danish Prime Minister that the Federal Government will continue to work in partnership with other countries to further improve maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.

Buhari said that his administration was determined to stop the huge loss of revenue from crude oil theft and has received assurances of international support to curb illegal shipments of Nigeria’s crude oil.

Stressing that his country is a major shipping nation, Mr. Rasmussen thanked President Buhari for Nigeria’s current efforts to enhance security in the Gulf of Guinea.

He assured the President that Danes will be very interested in investing in the development of Nigeria’s agricultural sector if the right policies and conditions are put in place.

“We are quite experienced in agriculture. It is an area in which we can cooperate. If you pave the way and remove the obstacles, we will like to come in,” the Prime Minister told President Buhari.

    Buhari mourns Braithwaite

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the immediate family, friends, professional colleagues and political allies of elder statesman and pro-democracy activist, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, who passed away on Monday.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President believed that the passing away of the lawyer, author and politician came at a time that his wisdom, intellectual depth, vast knowledge and experience were sorely needed by the country.

He recalled the immeasurable contributions of the late sage to the development of democracy, rule of law and human rights in Nigeria, assuring his family and friends that the political history of the country would be incomplete without capturing his roles.

The President urged political leaders to emulate the virtues of the founder of the Nigerian Advance Party (NAP) during the Second Republic, who perceived politics as a platform for honest service to the nation rather than an opportunity to make money.

President Buhari noted that the elder statesman was quintessentially selflessness, patriotic and committed to national development as his passion to serve the people never waned despite not winning in the presidential elections.

The President prayed that the Almighty God will grant his soul eternal rest, and comfort his loved ones.

    Buhari hails Tinubu at 64

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on his 64th birthday anniversary on Tuesday.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, on Monday, the President noted that Tinubu’s rise politically since he was elected as a Senator in 1992 was a testimony to his forthrightness, diligence and doggedness.
He said that the same qualities had endeared Tinubu to the electorate and given him all-round success as a private sector worker, a businessman and two-term Governor of Lagos State.
According to President Buhari, Tinubu’s disposition led to the formation of the APC which was able to oust the Peoples Democratic Party within a short period of its formation.
“As one of the pillars of the APC, President Buhari commends the visionary leadership style of the Asiwaju of Lagos, who is also the Jagaban of the Borgu Kingdom in Niger State, for creating a formidable opposition party in Nigeria that worked vigorously within a short period to oust a party that had been in power for 16 years.
“The President assures the national leader that his patriotism and commitment to democracy and good governance, and his generous spirit will always be remembered and appreciated by generations of Nigerians.
“He prays that the Almighty God will grant the Asiwaju long life, good health, wisdom and prosperity as he steadfastly supports efforts to promote the development of Nigeria.”

  • Rivers killings shameful – Buhari

    Rivers killings shameful – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday describe as shameful the recent political killings in Rivers state as a result of the rerun elections ordered by the Court of Appeal, adding that more Nigerians have been killed in Rivers than another state in the country.

The President who spoke at the National Executive Council meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) revealed that the government has saved over N3 trillion through its Treasury Single Account policy, while that the list of money recovered by government through the ongoing anti corruption crusade will soon be made public.

The President also said it was regrettable that the nation failed to save for the rainy days when oil sold for above 100 dollars, pointing out that at the moment, about 27 states in the country are not able to pay the salaries of their workers as and when due.

Buhari who expressed sadness over the violence that characterized elections in the country appealed to security agents in the country to try and give Nigerians the confidence to go out and perform their constitutional responsibility without molestation, adding that even though the leadership of INEC has been changed, he has shown that he has a lot of respect for them and the security agents.

He said: “Of course, the leadership of INEC has been changed, but I appeal to the leadership of the military, security agents and INEC that what I want Nigerians to remember me for, even if I have to leave the Presidency tomorrow is that I respect them.

“I want all Nigerians to believe and hold their PVC as personal entitlement as Nigerians and use it the way the like, and vote for whoever they like at which ever election. If they voluntarily sold it, it is part of their right and so, let them sell it and remain at home and not participate in any election.

“But let the law enforcement agencies give them the confidence that nobody will come out who has money to hire thugs, give them drugs and stop them from exercising their fundamental right.

“I am afraid I did not succeed in the election in Kogi, Bayelsa, Rivers. I think that more Nigerians are killed or killed themselves in Rivers than in any particular state. At this stage of our political development, to remain brutal is shameful and as a government, I promise we will do something by the next general election.”

Speaking on the economy, he said: “the fall of oil prices after Nigeria has made itself a mono economy is a disaster. I wonder why people could not believe that in Nigeria; about 27 out of 36 states have difficulty in paying basic salaries of their workers.

“If from 1999, oil sold above 100 dollars per barrel with an export of about 2 million barrel per day, how come Nigeria failed to make some arrangement to cushion the effect of a probably volatile oil market? Again, it shows failure of the last administration.

“But we are now to pick the pieces as an APC government and so, there is no need complaining, but let us concentrate and see how much we can do with whatever remains of the economy.

“However, we realized that agriculture and solid minerals are two areas that can quickly come to help us to recover economically, at least in terms of employment and feeding ourselves and more importantly, saving the hard currency to make sure that what is left our industries remain open, employing Nigerians and producing goods and services which is very important.

“The policy we are trying to implement is TSA. When we insist that we have to know what comes in and what goes out for us to make a comprehensive amendment to the economy.

“If you go and see the Central Bank Governor, he will tell you that in the TSA, we have more than N3 trillion. Where would this money have been if TSA was not in vogue? I was made to understand that vouchers would have quickly been raised towards the end of the financial year and checks made. Whether they are going into projects or private pockets, nobody can prove it to you.

“But that money is there, it is identified, if is quantified and when the budget comes back eventually, the Ministry of finance will see how to allocate it to the rest of the country.

“We have tried to make sure that NNPC is reorganized, so that we know how much of our crude is taken, how much it is sold and to which account the money is going.

“But I tell you that up to the time we came, if anybody told you that he knows how much of crude is exchanges hands either on the high sea or reaching their destination and the accounts the money goes into, that person is not telling you the truth.

“We are getting the cooperation of countries that has received this crude. But we have to be sure of the facts in our hands before we start prosecution so that Nigerians will believe what we have been telling them.”

On the fight against corruption, President Buhari said: “I was telling a British team that came to supervise the training team they sent that when I was in uniform, we took the perceived corrupt ones and put them in safe custody and quietly told them they were guilty until they can prove themselves innocent.

“But now under multiparty democratic system, I see some of them ride flashy cars, some of them have built estates here, but they are innocent until we can prove them guilty. This situation is true and you don’t need to stress your imagination to find out.

“If you can find out, you discover that a level eight officer has five houses, while you, as a Permanent Secretary or Commissioner still living in a rented house. That is the credible thing to do now.

“We have to get credible evidence to carry our successful prosecution and get judgment from the judiciary. But effort is being made to give a list of recoveries in whatever currencies so far so that Nigerians will know that it is not all about long stories”.

While assuring Nigerians that the government was winning on war against insurgency, he said “we have made progress. It was a very courageous decision that the party took and executed by the Executive by removing most of the military hierarchy and appointing those to take over from them, acquiring some new hard and soft ware and raising the moral of the military to go secure the rest of the country which was then 14 out of 774 local government.

“I have said it often that as far as I know and the service Chiefs who are on ground, they are not holding any local government. But the still have some capability especially on soft target by using technology.

“For Niger Delta, the militants are sending some conflicting messages. Some have said they are ready to drop their arms and join the rest of the nation to build it. But part of them is still sabotaging installations which are making investments in that lucrative area of Nigeria difficult because nobody will submit his riches to financial institutions; get money only to suffer huge loss.

“So, the environment for investment is being sabotaged by our own selves, Nigerians. We are doing our begs with the military by trying to persuade them to join the rest of the country because in unity lies our strength.

Turning to the party, President Buhari said: “I will like you to continue to make sacrifice. I know you are being harassed since the election that they haven’t seen anything on the ground. Well, if you have any explanation that could be accepted, is that you have three more years to go.

“When we came in after 16 years if PDP, each government had 42 ministries. We reduced them to 24, removed 21 Permanent Secretaries. We sat down and reflected seriously. We were all in the process of taking over at a time of national budget.

“So, imagine the volume of work and with what happened in the National Assembly, the padding, it would appear that below the Permanent Secretaries, there are still a lot of bureaucracies that are still with them. So, you have to appreciate the position we are in.

“Having cut 42 to 24, correspondingly, the parastatals will be cut down to some size and realigned and the boards reconstituted. We gave a blanket order which we had to rescind when we said all boards are suspended or dissolved.

“We had to go back and lick our vomit in terms of university boards because we found out that according to their laws, they cannot choose Vice Chancellors unless the Boards seat down, interview prospective candidates who wants to be VCs. So, there is nothing wrong in saying sorry and going back on your decision. So, we said sorry and allow all the universities to continue with their boards. But for the rest, eventually, we will make it. So, please, try to bear with us as we reflect on where we found ourselves.

“For globetrotting, sometimes, you need to present your case on personal basis to your economic colleagues and neighbors. Nothing is better than personal touch and I believe that we are learning a lot and eventually, the nation will realized so, I don’t envy you on the harassment you are going through from your constituencies. Take it with a lot of determination and we will be all right God willing”.

National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said naturally, this would have been the time to roll out the drums and celebrate loudly, adding that being a government and a party that is responsive, “we are very well aware of the hardships in the land and for that reason, it should be a period of introspection, a period for memories and a period for reminiscences.

“The problems we have are well known, of course originating from two well known factors, our squandered patrimony of course, the unfortunate coincidence of the collapse of the price of crude. Nevertheless, inspite of these hardships, our government has recorded strides that are worth mentioning, that are worth celebrating and that are worth noting.

“No question at all, that the vigorous and focused leadership provided in the fight against insurgency has yielded results that we all, as a nation, must be proud of. The insurgents have been deprived of the possibility of ever again, holding Nigerian territory and hoisting any of their dastardly flags.

“We have other issues like the TSA, and what it has done for our states even though temporarily and of course, Mr President’s shuttle diplomacy, which as we can see, is gradually beginning to stabilize. The oil market, the price of crude is gradually beginning to crawl persistently, slowly but upwards.

“It is true, these are hard times, but hard times create challenges. Challenges call for men and women to agree in leadership, united, focused, passionate in the policies that they stand for, which means that this party must rediscover itself, which means that this party must stand as one behind the success of our president and of the policies that we stand for and of the promises he has made to the Nigerian people.

“This also means that this is a time to stand together, which means that this is a time to rededicate ourselves and the party to the vision to which the people of this nation voted. We must leave this arena once more as a strong, united fighting force dedicated to delivering on the promises made by Mr. President to the Nigerian people.”

  • Buhari tasks APC states to build 250,000 housing units yearly

Buhari tasks APC states to build 250,000 housing units yearly

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday tasked the 22 states governed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to build 250,000 housing units per annum.

This, he said, is to meet up with the election campaign promise of providing one million houses for Nigerians yearly.

He spoke at the opening session of the two-day National Economic Council (NEC) Retreat on the economy at the old Banquet Hall, Abuja.

He also charged foreign investors and local construction companies to take part in the new effort to cover Nigeria’s housing deficit.

He said: “Some estimates put Nigeria’s housing deficit at about sixteen million units. In our successful campaign to win the general elections last year our party, the APC, promised to build a million housing units a year. This will turn out to be a very tall order unless:

“The Federal Government builds two hundred and fifty thousand units. The 22 APC States together manage another two hundred and fifty thousand units.

“We invite foreign investors together with local domiciled big construction companies to enter into commercial housing building to pick up the rest,” he added

Buhari listed the challenges in the housing sector to include severe shortage of housing, high rents, unaffordable prices for prospective buyers especially middle and low-income earners.

“In addition, red tape, corruption and plain public service inefficiency lead to long delays in obtaining ownership of title documents.

“Again, there are no long term funding sources for mortgage purposes.

“These hurdles are by no means easy to scale, but we must find solutions to the housing deficit. This Retreat might start by looking at the laws.” He added

On the poor power situation in the country, the President said that he observed that it has become the subject of jokes among Nigerians.

He gave a target of 10,000 megawatts to be achieved in the remaining three years of his administration.

He said: “Nigerians’ favourite talking point and butt of jokes is the power situation in our country. But, ladies and gentlemen, it is no longer a laughing matter.

“We must and by the grace of God we will put things right. In the three years left for this administration we have given ourselves the target of ten thousand megawatts distributable power. In 2016 alone, we intend to add two thousand megawatts to the national grid.” He stated

The President pointed out that despite the privatization of the power sector, not much has been achieved in terms of performance as the old problems have remained.

He said: “This sector has been privatized but has yet to show any improvement in the quality of service. Common public complaints are constant power cuts destroying economic activity and affecting quality of life, high electricity bills despite power cuts, low supply of gas to power plants due to vandalization by terrorists, obsolete power distribution equipment such as transformers, power fluctuations, which damage manufacturing equipment and household appliances, low voltage which cannot run industrial machinery.

“These are some of the problems, which defied successive governments. In our determination to change we must and will, insha Allah, put a stop to power shortages.” He promised

The President charged the retreat to consider the privatization exercise, adding: “We are facing the classic dilemma of privatization: Public interest Vs Profit Motive. Having started, we must complete the process.

“But National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the regulatory authority, has a vital job to ensure consumers get value for money and over-all public interest is safe-guarded.

“Government to fast-track completion of pipelines from Gas points to power stations and provide more security to protect gas and oil pipelines.

“Power companies should be encouraged to replace obsolete equipment and improve the quality of service and technicians.” He said

Speaking on agricultural sector; he said that as at today both the peasant and the mechanized farmers agree with the general public that food production and self-sufficiency require urgent government action.

According to him, government’s policies on agriculture have been half-hearted for too long due to inconsistencies and discontinuity.

The worries of the public, he said, included rising food prices, such as maize, corn, rice and garri; lack of visible impact of government presence on agriculture, lack of agricultural inputs at affordable prices.

He also said that the cost of fertilizers, pesticide and labour compounded the problems of farming while extension services are virtually absent in several states, among others factors.

On manufacturing, he regretted that lack of foreign exchange had hampered import of industrial raw materials and spare parts but gave assurance that the situation is temporary.

He said: “It grieves me that so many manufacturing industries in the country today are groaning and frustrated because of lack of foreign exchange to import raw materials and spare parts.

“Painful though this is, I believe it is a temporary phase which we shall try to overcome but there are deeper, more structural problems bedeviling local industries which this Retreat should identify short and long-term answers to.” He said

He listed the problems to include “Inadequate infrastructure: Power, Roads, Security leading to increase in costs of making Made-in Nigeria goods pricier than imports, high Cost of Borrowing Money.

Buhari said: “Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has been hammering on the fact that high lending rates make manufacturing unviable and unprofitable.

“Lack of Long Term Funding, the Nigerian Capital Market has not completely recovered from the 2008 worldwide crisis. Banks’ funding sources are short-term in nature due to sources of the liabilities.

“Under-developed Science and Technology Research: As with Agriculture, Nigeria’s industries are in the main outmoded and industrial practices far behind those in advanced countries.” He added

The president recommended that a fresh campaign to patronize Made-in-Nigeria goods should be launched saying: “Example: all uniforms in government-sponsored institutions should be sourced from local factories.”

On Labour, he said: “We need to protect our workers from exploitation, but unions must cooperate with entrepreneurs to substantially improve productivity and quality of products if we are to move forward.”

As for smuggling, he stated: “Smuggling: Need I say more?”

The two-day retreat is to generate immediate, medium and long-term viable policy solutions to the economic challenges facing us at both the Federal and State levels.

In his welcome address, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who is the chairman of NEC, said that the retreat is organized to address the problems created by over-reliance on oil.

At the retreat were state governors, ministers and other stakeholders.

  • We must produce what we eat -Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said that his administration will vigorously implement policies that will revive Nigeria’s  agricultural sector and reposition it as the mainstay of the national economy.

Speaking at an audience with the new Bulgarian Ambassador to Nigeria,  Mr. Vesselin Blagoer Delcher, President Buhari said that his administration will evolve and implement policies that will help Nigeria become self-sufficient in food production because continued importation of food could expose the country to more external shocks.

The President, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said that the unbridled importation of food also contributes to the depletion of  the country’s foreign reserves and  deprives citizens of job opportunities.

He said: ‘‘We must produce what we eat. We don’t have unlimited resources to continue the importation of  food items that can be produced locally.

“Fortunately, some Nigerians have shown foresight by building factories that process agricultural products within the country.

‘‘They have created a value chain that boosts employment, protects our foreign reserves and safeguards the economy from external shocks.

“We will do all that we can to encourage others to join in the effort to achieve national self-sufficiency in food production,” President Buhari said.

His administration, he said, will also help and encourage Nigerian farmers to adopt modern, technology-driven methods that guarantee higher production and returns on investment.

Buhari, who also received Mr. Paul Lehmann, the new High Commissioner of Australia, Hajiya Afsatu Olayinka Ebiso-Kabba, the new High Commissioner of Sierra-Leone and Thordur Aegir Oskarsson, the new Ambassador of Iceland, said that Nigeria will welcome the  further strengthening  of relations with their countries, especially in the areas of   agriculture, solid minerals and trade.

He wished the four envoys, who were at the Presidential Villa to present their letters of credence to him, very successful tenures in Nigeria.

Buhari receives highest honour in Equatorial Guinea

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday night received in Malabo Equatorial Guinea’s highest national honour, the Grand Collar of the Order of the Independence.

He has dedicated it to the people of Nigeria, who, he said, have worked tirelessly for peace in the country and Africa.

Buhari in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said: “I will like to express profound gratitude for the honour given to me and my people.

“There has never been a time for greater neighbourliness on our continent in the interest of peace, security and economic stability than now,” President Buhari said at the investiture ceremony.

As African countries faced common challenges, he said, they must strive to cooperate more to find workable solutions that will facilitate rapid socio-economic development on the continent.

Buhari pledged that under his leadership, Nigeria will continue to make significant contributions to peace, political stability and progress in Africa.

President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea said that the honour was conferred on President Buhari for his “personal integrity, exemplary leadership style and courage to fight terrorism in order to ensure peace and safety in Africa”.

“We deemed it fit and appropriate to honour this son of Africa for the great work he is doing, which includes tackling Boko Haram, a great menace to the continent,” President Mbasogo said.
