  • #RevolutionNow: ‘Protest planned to destabilize Buhari’s government’

The leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has said the #RevolutionNow protest planned for tomorrow is a deliberate attempt by enemies of the country and unpatriotic individuals to destabilize the country and government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

NYCN President, Almustapha Abdullahi, said these in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Abdullahi described the planned protest as “ill-time and uncalled for,” adding that the organization “will not be part of any unlawful gathering in the name of revolution.”

He said the youth body will not take part in the march expected to take place simultaneously in twenty – one cities tomorrow.

Abdullahi said exercising one’s right to freedom of speech, association and assembly should be done with decorum.

The statement reads: “RevolutionNow Movement” call for mass action across the country against the Federal Government of Nigeria is ill-time and uncalled for and that Nigerian Youth will not be part of any unlawful gathering in the name of revolution.

“This can be best described as deliberate attempt to destabilize Nigeria and government of President Muhammadu Buhari. As such any group of persons collaborating the call for revolution protest is unpatriotic.

“At a time when Nigeria is battling with barrage of security challenges no sane or right thinking individual will be instigating the populace against the government and calling for total short down of Nigeria.

“The #RevolutionNow Protest and the convener are opposite in nature hence it became worrisome and explicitly pertinent for every concern Nigerians to ask several questions.

“We call all security agencies to take charge and not allow any dissidents and foreign agents to draw us back as a nation.”

He urged the youths in the country to be law abiding and not allow anybody or agents of the fourth columnist to use them as cannon fodder.

“This set of greedy and political jobbers who are perceived to be under sponsorship of the external enemies of our dear nation,” the statement added.

  • Presidency to Group: Revolution not appropriate for change of government

The Presidency on Sunday declared that revolution is not the best option of changing a government.

It however said that a more appropriate option is to go through elections.

The Presidency, through a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, was reacting to the scheduled “revolution” march on Monday 5th August, by the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria.

He said “Following calls circulating on social and digital media, an organisation that calls itself the “Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria” plans a “revolution” march tomorrow, Monday 5th August, with the aim of bringing “regime change” in Nigeria without recourse to a nationwide vote.

“The President of Nigeria and his administration respect and uphold the right of every Nigerian to peaceful protest and civil campaign– whether to raise awareness on issues, and even oppose the government. It is the inalienable right of all citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to do so.

“There is, however, a difference between peaceful call to protest and incitement for a revolution.

“The organization championing this planned action is not fronted by any serious public faces. We call on the sponsors and organizers to have the decency to come forward and make their identity known – out of respect to all Nigerians – so that Nigerians can be fully aware in whose name this “revolution” is being proposed and who the beneficiaries may be.”

He recalled that less than six months ago, Nigeria held simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, which were won resoundingly by President Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressives Congress party.

He added that the campaign was observed, while results were confirmed by international election monitoring groups and observers.

‘The result was even contested by the losing presidential candidate and his party in Court.” he said

He went on “The ballot box is the only constitutional means of changing government and a president in Nigeria. The days of coups and revolutions are over.

“Those making the “revolution’’ call hide behind the veil of social media modernity. But without revealing the identity of their sponsors this shadowy campaign is no better, and no more democratic, than the days of old.

“The President calls on all those who seek to use and hide behind everyday citizens to attain power through undemocratic and violent means, which has been alluded, to come out clearly and be identified.

“They should lead their march in person. Only then will they begin to have the right to call themselves leaders before the people of Nigeria.” he said

“Again, the issue of anti-corruption. l think the Ministers should also cue into the anti- corruption fight with the President.  Most importantly the first thing the administration should do in this second term is the creation of job opportunities for the teeming youths.

“You know most of these people you see that are demonstrating or joining Boko Haram or kidnapping are as a result of lack of jobs. With the creation of jobs l believe that President Muhammad Buhari would be able to tackle some of the issues. Let us support Mr. President and his team on what they are doing so that Nigerians can move forward.

“What Nigerians should know is that the President is in the position to know what is good for Nigeria now. So, for him to have appointed them as Ministerial nominees meant that he has gone through their records and see them qualified.

“We should not start criticizing them, let us give them time and let them perform. Any of them who refuses to perform, there is room for change. You can change them.”

  • Killing of Catholic priest: Buhari orders manhunt for killers

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday directed the security agencies to go all out to find the brains behind Thursday’s killing of Reverend Father Paul Offu in Enugu.

Buhari also sent condolences to the Catholic Church over the killing of the priest who, until his death, was in charge of St. James Greater Parish Catholic Church, Ugbawka, Enugu State.

Similar condolences came from the state branch of the  Miyetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

The group described the death of Offu as one too many and said the killers must be brought to book.

Buhari, according to his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, expressed deep shock and dismay over the killing of the priest.

The President commiserated with government and people of Enugu State, family of Rev Fr. Offu and members of the parish and all Christians.

Describing the killing of the priest as “barbaric and unwarranted’’, President Buhari assured the Catholic Church and all Nigerians that the fight against “lawlessness and recklessness’’ will be intensified as security of lives and property continues to top his priorities.

“The entire nation is shaken by the horrible assassination of this priest. The administration will continue to guarantee the freedom of religion and protect places of worship as well as the lives of citizens wherever they live,” he added.

Directing law enforcement agencies to act swiftly in their investigations and bring the perpetrators of the “horrific crime’’ to book, the President called on all religious leaders to pray for peace, healing and security of the country.

Miyetti-Allah: Fulani herders not responsible for killing of Offu

In its reaction, the Miyetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Enugu State said that its members were not responsible for the killing of the Catholic priest.

It said it has been inundated with a barrage of accusations following the killing which it described as unfortunate.

The group said it was part of the security and peace committee in Enugu State, hence it was bound to control its members and ensure that criminals do not infiltrate its members conducting their business of cow rearing.

Chairman of MACBAN in South East, Alhaji Giddado Siddiki in a statement said: “Again our hearts bleed over the most bastardly murder of a Catholic priest, Reverend Father Paul Offu, of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu.

“This is one murder too many! It is most condemnable and heartily regretted.

“Again our society aches as a result of the activities of criminals who care less about the value of human life. It is painful that the security apparatuses of the government have not been able to contain the excesses of these men of the underworld who have continued to diminish the value of life in our society.

“We hereby most heartily console the members of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, and all the Christian faithful on this very painful and irreparable loss.

“We once more call on the government to rise to the occasion and provide adequate security for the citizens of Nigeria across the length and breadth of the country.

“We maintain that crime, in whatever form of its perpetration, is anti-society. Criminals of any guise cause pains to society and should therefore be properly identified and made to face the full wrath of the law.

“While we mourn the sudden departure of Father Offu, we are very hopeful that this occasion will agitate the government sufficiently to respond to the challenge of criminality amongst us.

“Please let all of us be duly consoled. May God receive the soul of His dutiful servant in Paradise.”

  • WAEC official, presidential aide confirm Buhari’s certificates

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari  continued on Wednesday his defence at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) by calling four witnesses, including a senior official of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and one of his (President’s) aides .

The senior WAEC official, Henry Adewunmi Oshindehinde, a Deputy Registrar in Charge of School Examination in Nigeria and the Senior Special Assistant to the President (Household and Social Events), Mohammed Sarki Abba, confirmed that Buhari possesses secondary school qualification certificates.

Oshindehinde confirmed that he certified the statement of results of the University of Cambridge WASC examination obtained by Buhari in 1961 as a student of the Provincial Secondary School, Katsina. Abba said the President possesses the qualifications to stand for election.

The other two witnesses, Mohammed Usman Kwatu and Usman Dagona, who said they each acted as ward and polling unit agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger and Nasarawa states during the last presidential election, said contrary to the petitioners’ claim, the election held peacefully and was free and fair.

The four witnesses testified at the resumed hearing on Wednesday in the petition by Atiku and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the outcome of the last presidential election.

Ohindehinde, who was the first witness on Wednesday, was led in evidence by Buhari’s lead lawyer, Wole Olanipekun (SAN). He adopted his written deposition as his evidence in the case and said he was at the court on subpoena and tendered a copy of the subpoena issued by the court.

He confirmed that he certified a copy of the confidential result sheet of the University of Cambridge West African School Certificate of 1961 for the Provincial Secondary School, Katsina (marked as Exhibit R21), which was shown to him.

The lead lawyer to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Yunus Usman (SAN), did not cross-examine the WAEC official.

But, under cross-examination by Lateff Fagbemi (SAN), lawyer to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Oshindehinde explained that Exhibit R21 is the result of the University of Cambridge moderated secondary school examination, which was conducted in conjunction with his organization.

The witness confirmed that by the information contained in Exhibit 21, 18 candidates sat for the examination. Buhari is listed as number two.

“Buhari sat for eight subjects and had credit in five. The subjects and scores are: Oral English: C5; History: A3;  Geography: C6; Hausa: C5; and Health Sciences; C6. He recorded an Aggregate of 32 and was awarded Grade 2,” the witness said.

Oshindehinde, who has worked with WAEC for the past 30 years, told the court that it would be wrong for anyone to claim that a person with such result did not have a secondary school certificate.

Under cross-examination with lawyer to Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Livy Uzoukwu, the WAEC official confirmed that while Buhari’s first name was spelt as Mohamed in a document marked as Exhibit R19, the same name was spelt as Muhammadu in another document, marked as Exhibit 21.

When asked to explain the deference in the spellings, the witness said he could not offer any comment because one of the documents in which the President’s first name was spelt as Mohamed, was not authored by him and that the document was not from his organisation.

When asked to confirm if R21 qualified as a certificate, the witness said it was not a certificate, but a preceding document for the issuance of a certificate to anyone who writes WAEC’s supervised examination. “The document  is not a certificate, but a primary document preceding the issuance of a certificate,” he said.

Under further cross-examination by Uzoukwu, the witness confirmed that while six subjects were entered against Buhari’s name in Exhibit 19, eight were recorded against his name in Exhibit 21.

The witness, who also confirmed that WAEC’s Registrar, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, gave Buhari an attestation certificate on November 2, 2018, argued that an attestation certificate was not only issued when somebody’s actual certificate was missing.

Abba, who was the second witness, was led by Olanipekun to adopt his written statement as his evidence in the case and also identified some documents tendered in court, which he referred to in his statement, one of which was Exhibit 26, which is the President’s curriculum vitae (CV).

Under cross-examination by Usman, the witness said he had been with Buhari for over 30 years and that Buhari has, since assuming office as the President, addressed the country in English language.

Under cross-examination by Fagbemi, Abba identified Buhari from the photograph of the 1961 graduating students of the Provincial Secondary School, Katsina, earlier admitted in evidence by the court and marked as Exhibit 22.

The witness explained the differentials in the spelling of Buhari’s first name, as identified by the petitioners in some documents, do not distract from the fact that the names refer to the same Buhari, who sat for and passed the examination.

Abba said variation exists in the spelling of Mohammed, depending on where the person comes from. “An English man will say Mohamed; an Hausa man will say Muhammadu; a Yoruba man will say Mohammed, So, it depends on the why the name is spelt in your part of the world.”

Under cross-examination by Uzoukwu, the witness said, although Buhari’s certificates were not mentioned in his curriculum vitae and FormCF001, which he submitted to INEC, he knew the President possesses the relevant certificates.

Abba said he was “61 plus” and has never served in the military, He said he was neither Buhari’s school or class mate, and that he got the information contained in his written statement from Buhari’s CV and other documents.

At the close of the testimony by Dagona, who described himself as a retired broadcaster and farmer, Olanipekun applied for adjournment to enable his client invite more witnesses and source more documents to be tendered in the case.

Justice Mohammed Garba, who is the court’s Presiding Justice, adjourned further proceedings till August 1.

  • Why Nigeria assisted Zimbabwe after cyclone devastation, by Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday explained the reason behind Nigeria’s assistance to Zimbabwe after cyclone devastation.

According to him, the devastation was so enormous that Nigeria could not afford to look the other way but to offer a helping hand.

Buhari, according to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, made the remark while receiving in farewell audience the Ambassador of Zimbabwe to Nigeria, His Excellency, Lovemore Mazemo.

“It was a major disaster, and it caused damage in billions of dollars. Nigeria, despite our own challenges, had to provide aid to ameliorate the situation,” the President said,

He said he was glad that the outgoing Ambassador and his country appreciated the hand of fellowship.

Cyclone Idai ravaged Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Malawi, and is believed to be the costliest natural disaster in South-West Indian Ocean basin. Goods and properties estimated at two billion dollars were lost.

President Buhari also recalled the role Nigeria played to secure the Independence of Zimbabwe from apartheid minority rule, noting: “We remain proud of what Nigeria did in those days.”

The Olu of Warri, Ogiamen Ikenwoli, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to revive the $20 billion Ogidigben Gas Revolution Industrial Park.

He spoke with State House correspondents on Wednesday after meeting with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The monarch also urged the Federal Government to open port facilities in the Southern and Eastern corridors to decongest the Lagos Ports which is adversely affecting economic activities in the state.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated the $20 billion Ogidigben Gas Revolution Industrial Park (GRIP) projected to generate 250,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The monarch said efforts by the former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, to attract developers to the project collapsed after a consortium pooled over $10 billion for the project

He said: “If the project and ports in the Southern parts of the country are revived, unemployment, kidnapping and insecurity will be a thing of the past. The over 2,700 hectares park is designed for fertilizer, methanol, petrochemicals, and aluminium plants.

“We are at the Presidential Villa to congratulate the President on his election victory as a sign of solidarity.”

On the idle ports in the south, the monarch said the ports, at Warri, Sapele, Burutu, Onitsha and Calabar, were a major source of job creation and social stabilisation.
